WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM. ARTFORUM.

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? According to Le Corbusier, pictorial space is the space that cannot be entered or circulated through‘. It is a flat space without depth and it can only be viewed from one side. Moreover, a pictorial space can be viewed from a distance and that distance gives it a nature of ‘frontality‘ which means it only have one side of front.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against? One of the attributes is the image flatness is ‘frontality’ which has one side of front and it all that exists. His painting only uses 2d shapes to convey his message in his painting. It is opposite to ‘rotational’ which means it can be navigated through. The second attribute is that using colour and texture to alter the apperance of obejcts rather than represent the space or depth between and behind them. However, Le Corbusier also uses this idea of frontalitly of forms to counter himself.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES AND OLD ORIGINS

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection?

Perspectival space limits the space with a finite distance. Perspective uses fixed vanishing points to make a 3D space. This also records the things which are already existed and makes it more inflexible. On the other hand, projection is more flexible, because it isn’t fixed to a single vanishing point, which shortens the distance in a drawing. There are no limits in a projection drawing but rather in a perspective drawing.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? Axonometric projection was for milltary purposes initially. Because its substantial property of providing exact measurements and dimensions, three axis can be easily measured to the same scale. Also, it was used successfully to calculate and predict trajectories of artillery projectiles.

The idea of shrine on the top of the mountain is gernally from the game ‘Monument Valley’ and the game ‘Tengami‘. The shape of moon and stairs in the game are used for reference to my work.

Two Mario statues are created to emphasize the Mario story for viewers, as to mention the nostalgic atmosphere of the whole world.

The theme I created for the whole world is partial to the ancient Japanese style. As the temple (on the right side) I referred to is a typical Japanese building, all the colors and styles are set for the viewers to immerse into the world created.

The bottom part of Mario World is inspired by one of the cakes I’ve tasted which the module of the protuberance is quite similar to the land, and other part is like river.
