THE UNTOLD OPPORTUNITY OF GIRLS SOCCER BY Liam Monahan’20
THE WORK
with Kelsey Wong ’20 enterback Kelsey Wong ’20 plays defense for the Varsity Girls Soccer team and has been offered to play for Loyola Marymount University. Getting to this opportunity was not easy. It took self-determination, hard work, and support from loved ones. Wong started her soccer career at four years old and has played with the same group of girls for over a decade. With these teammates, she has developed into an aggressive player with an incredibly positive personality. Wong’s team became a family, and it was this love of her teammates that indirectly led her to commit her life to soccer. At age 10, her mother posed a simple, yet life-changing question. “She asked me, ‘Do you want to keep playing soccer?’â€? said Wong. “I wasn’t too serious, but playing with teammates was something that helped me create a love for the game.â€? As the training became harder and the practices longer, the games became more intense for Wong. Low points made LW GLIÂżFXOW DW WLPHV IRU KHU WR SHUIRUP DW D KLJK OHYHO LQ VXFK D demanding sport, but whenever she found herself in a slump, Wong recalled her family’s words. “My parents and my brother are my biggest motivators. Even when I play bad‌ they remind me, ‘You love the game,’ or , ‘Don’t get down on yourself.’â€? Wong had not seriously considered playing beyond club soccer until she watched the United States defeat Japan in the Women’s World Cup. These women became role models for Wong as she established a new goal for her soccer career: to play for a collegiate women’s soccer team. “I know I’m not on a national team level – that’s kinda crazy – but this made me realize that I should start pursuing a bigger goal than just high school soccer.â€? With the coaches helping her reach out to different colleges, Wong played with her team in national tournaments to hopefully get noticed. Her hard work paid off as she received an offer to play for LMU, taking another step toward her goal of becoming a collegiate soccer player. With a verbal commitment in place, Wong’s high school journey is quickly coming to an end. As she continues to hold herself to a high standard as both an athlete and student, Wong looks forward to a future career playing for the Lions.

THE REWARD

It is through soccer that Venenciano hopes to further her academic journey, realizing that the sport has opened doors for her college career. “Without soccer, my chances of getting into Pomona would be insane, said Venenciano. “With this commitment, though, the coach emailed me to say, ‘We have a letter of recommendation.’ So that’s almost a ‘You’re in!’ thing. With her time at ‘Iolani almost over and a trip to Claremont, California nearly set in stone, Venenciano looks forward to new opportunities that lie ahead. With state-ofthe-art athletic facilities on the Pomona campus, Venenciano plans to enhance her strength and conditioning. More importantly though, she hopes to create strong bonds with new teammates and has already contacted many current players and coaches. the Nintendo Switch, and I think it’s really fun to play on. I would like to try to play Minecraft or Fortnite on [the PS4]. It looks really cool, and some of my friends have one, so I would like to get one so that I can play with them. Man, a PS4 would be a cool present!
