Good coaches instill fun and respect
When my 6-year-old grandson Lucas plays ball with Granddad, more often than not he connects with the ball. He dives for the bases. Throws with all his might. And he’s all smiles.
That’s the advantage of playing by his “rules.”
In the confines of our backyard, Lucas is allowed to swing until he hits the ball. And when he connects, rather than sticking to running from base to base it often becomes a game of tag.
Probably much to the chagrin of Lucas’s Junior Bitty Ball coaches, Brian doesn’t care. He likes tag just as well as baseball when it comes to interacting with his grandson.
The swimming pool, of course, can’t come with the same abandon, and we’re eagerly awaiting for Lucas to begin swimming lessons.
Susan Lynn Register editorMy kids grew up with the advantage of their school district having an indoor pool. Throughout elementary school, all students were taught how to swim as part of their PE curriculum.
While Lucas is a proficient dog-paddler, it can’t compare to becoming an adept swimmer.
I give all the coaches credit for keeping sports fun for our legions of youth.
Yes, to avoid utter pandemonium there must be rules. But it’s the joy that keeps the kids coming back.
The trick, I suppose, is to develop both a love of the sport and a respect for rules.
Thankfully, the thrill of winning a game or mastering a stroke comes naturally enough.
I suspect in no time Lucas will go from a sulking little boy when he whiffs the ball to a strongwilled teenager determined to hone his skills.
I’m a little embarrassed to admit Brian and I are just now watching “Ted Lasso,” the series about a Kansas coach recruited to manage an English soccer team.
Like Lasso, I believe sports incorporate a lot of life lessons. Don’t hog the ball. A team win is more rewarding than a solo performance. And to make lemonade, it takes responsible adults showing kids how to be good sports.
