May 25 to 3 June have been one of the deadliest periods in the Mediterranean Sea this year. 1,457 migrants have died or are missing, presumed drowned in ten separate incidents. 2,205 have been rescued, according latest data. The worst tragedy occurred on May 26, about 35 nautical miles north of Zuwara, Libya, in which an estimated 500 migrants disappeared, including 40 children.
