91% of migrants recorded are men. Field reports state women travelling alone or with companions are promised work in Algeria or Europe but can end up finding themselves in forced abuse or exploitation situations. The security and climatic challenges in the area mean migrants are dependent on smugglers and the general migrant network for further travel and shelter, which can render individuals susceptible to trafficking or exploitation.

NIGER Flow Monitoring Points (FMP)

04 April 2016

Flow monitoring points are placed at known migrant passing points along the Niger migratory route. Data is collected daily at FMPs to inform migrant movements and profiles. The data collected provides a snapshot of migrant movements through the region. The numbers are collected from primary sources and do not claim to reflect all migrants passing through the flow monitoring points. TOTAL N° OF MIGRANTS REGISTERED AT FMP SINCE 01/02/2016

NIGER Flow Monitoring Points (FMP)

04 April 2016

SEGUEDINE - FLOW MONITORING POINT 1 Séguédine is one of the northernmost towns in Niger, over 600 km from Agadez and 300km from Libya. Due to increased insecurity in the region, government authorities have regulated migrant convoy departures. The outgoing migrant convoys leave Agadez on Mondays, to pass through Séguédine between Tuesday and Thursday and they then arrive in Libya on Fridays. The following week, the same vehicles drive the same route in reverse and reach Agadez on Fridays on their way back. This regular route is operated on a weekly basis by a fleet of pick-up, 4 wheel drive vehicles and large 10 wheel trucks.

ARLIT - FLOW MONITORING POINT 2 Arlit is located 230 km north of Agadez, on the main road between Agadez and the Algerian city of Tamanrasset. The town grew around the uranium mining industry and serves as a rest point for movements between Algeria and Niger. Nigerian migrants that are convoyed from Algeria back to Niger also travel through Arlit before reaching the IOM transit center in Agadez. As such many of the migrants returning to Niger from Algeria do so in a repatriated rather than voluntary fashion.

*METHODOLOGY: Sources include authorities, civil society and direct observation/interviews with passing migrants. As such nationality numbers are not independently verifiable and are not included. Nationality numbers are gathered through estimation based on information given by migrants themselves and the drivers of the vehicles. The numbers used here refer to the proportions of nationalities in the inflows and outflows with 1 referring to the highest proportion of migrants from that nationality.
