The security situation in Iraq remains dire, as continuing violence in the north and restriction of movement in the central and southern governorates hamper humanitarian response to the more than 1.7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country. In Anbar governorate, IDPs are only counted in Iraqi government-controlled areas due to the security situation. Despite these challenges, IOM Iraq has continued to distribute aid and assess the IDP situation via rapid assessment and response teams (RART) on the ground. Between 11-13 September, IOM distributed 640 family non-food item kits to an estimated 3,840 beneficiaries across Iraq. In the northern governorates, IOM Iraq is providing aid to IDPs who have been displaced to schools, mosques and unfinished buildings. In the central and southern governorates, IOM is distributing aid in addition to assisting in camp management. In central Iraq, IOM delivered 500 non-food relief (NFI) kits to

Also in the south, IOM is constructing 15 pre-fabricated bathrooms, cooking facilities and toilets, delivering air coolers, ceiling fans, gas tubes, water coolers, water tanks, and trash bins, in addition to reverse osmosis units to respond to the urgent need for potable water in Missan governorate. IOM Iraq also delivered 150 tents to assist in camp construction there on 9th September. The Governorate Displacement Snapshots aim to inform IOM Iraq and all other IOM stakeholders on the dynamics of displacement, security developments and basic needs and vulnerabilities of the displaced population within the profiled governorate. The information is collected by the IOM Iraq Rapid Assessment and Response Team (RART) through IOM’s Displacement Tracking and Monitoring (DTM) programme. The DTM endeavors to release regular updates detailing displacement on a biweekly basis. IOM DTM continues to monitor and track the situation in order to verify the numbers of the displaced population. Human Interest Story: The Abdullah Family more than once during the current crisis. IOM Iraq staff spoke to IDPs at a recent distribution in Baghdad on 10 September and were told stories of hardship, as many IDPs had left their homes with very little money or personal belongings. Raad Hadi Abdullah fled with his wife and two daughters from Baghdad in 2006 when his shop was burned down by armed groups. His family then attempted to settle in Qaraqosh because of the relative safety there. In August, they were once again displaced when armed groups invaded Mosul. Hearing stories of how these armed groups threatened the safety of many, including religious minorities, the family fled to Erbil. Because of the high cost of living, Raad sent his wife and daughters to stay with her family in Baghdad. The stress that comes with this subsequent displacement has resulted in significant psychological strain for the family, as Raad’s wife seeks financial assistance to avoid becoming a burden to her family in Baghdad.
The members of the Abdullah family are among many of the 1.7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iraq who have been displaced
IOM Iraq delivers non-food items such as mattresses, cooking supplies, hygiene materials, and other items that contribute to a feeling of normalcy for IDPs. IDPs repeatedly express gratitude to IOM for receiving such aid. Lives that have been disrupted by a conflict that leaves them without basic necessities such as places to sleep or cook are positively impacted by such items.
IOM is responding to life-threatening needs in a rapidly changing environment, in addition to monitoring movements on the ground.
