History The History Departmentis proud of the success that its former students have attained. As in years prior, the academic year 2013/2014 has produced its share of student ‘success-stories’. Most notably, James Hurley, class of 2012 [History and Political Science Major], garnered a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Queen’s University (Belfast, Northern Ireland). Cristobal [CJ] Orrantia, class of 2013 (History Major), was recently accepted by and will attend the Law School of Notre Dame University. In the summer and fall of 2014, another graduate from the class of 2013, Jonathan Grady, obtained valuable experience toward a future career. Mr. Grady taught English (and qualifying for TEFL) in Prague and has followed up this experience with time as a paid intern at a local museum in New Jersey. The accomplishments of two more recent graduates (class of 2014), Pieter Maddens, a Belgian international student, and Andrew Jordan, also deserve mention. Mr. Maddens has been hired to teach history in Leuven, Belgium and Mr. Jordan garnered a Teach for America placement to teach in Omaha. The department faculty have continued to be active scholars in their academic fields through conference presentations, publications and membership in professional organizations. Michael Hughes, Ph.D., read and provided commentary on a manuscript book chapter for John A. Lynn titled, “Chapter 6: The Rare Resort to Revolutionary Terrorism before 1848.” Lynn is one of the leading military historians in the United States and this chapter is part of his new book project on the history of terrorism. Furthermore, Dr. Hughes served as the commentator for the conference panel, “Misfits and Misfires: the Other Wars of the French Revolution.” This panel was part of the Society for French Historical Studies annual conference, which tool place on April 26, 2014 at the University of Québec in Montréal, Canada. Yasuhiro Makimura, Ph.D., submitted his book manuscript for review. The book is titled: “Shipping Silk: Yokohama and eastern Japan’s first steps towards economic development, 1853-1883.” He has submitted the manuscript to the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University. Dr. Makimura also crafted a paper, “From Atlantic Triangle Trade to Asian Triangle Trade: An economic history of the world from 1500 to 1900.”, which he presented at the 43rd Mid-Atlantic Region Association of Asian Studies (MAR AAS) conference which took place September 18-20, 2014. George Bournoutian, Ph.D., authored two texts. He published From Tabriz to St. Petersburg: Iran’s Mission of Apology to Russia in 1829 (Book) 335 pages. Feb. 2014. He also published Kratkaia istoriia armianskogo naroda (in Russian) which is currently in press. Moreover, Dr. Bournoutian presented lectures and participated in conferences at UC Irvine, UCLA (2), Toronto, MESA (New Orleans), and Yale University. He also applied for grants from the Zohrab Fellowship, Sevazlian fund and Nazarian Fund and, most notably, from the Fulbright Scholarship Program. Daniel Thiery, Ph.D., presented, “The Reformation of the Parishes. Creating ‘Soft Targets’?” at the Northeast Conference of British Studies (University of Connecticut, Oct. 2013) and he also crafted an article, “Henry V, Religion and the Rouen Ditch” which was published by History Today in the November 2014 issue. Brother Joseph Morgan, Ph.D., presented a conference paper “Controversy in Southern Illinois: Wesley Fishel and the Center for Vietnamese Studies” at the 62nd Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs at Michigan State University. He was also a conference participant at Vietnam, 1963: A Conference Examining the Watershed Events of a Monumental Year. This conference was jointly sponsored by the Vietnam Center, Texas Tech University, and the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, DC. Lastly, in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, Brother Morgan created special topics undergraduate and graduate courses on the First and Second World Wars.

Mock Trial Team: Anastasia Nitis (Sr. co-captain) Mary Ann Gallucci (Sr. co-captain) Amy Wert (Jr.) Joshua Myree (Jr.) Ariel May (Jr.) Stephanie Stein (So.) Kayla Kosack (Fr.) Valery Gabriel (Fr.)

The Iona College Mock Trial team had one of the most successful seasons in team history during 2013-2014. Adam Detsky, Isaac Gilwit, and Michael Gelfand served as coaches. A summary of results is below: •

First tournament of the year was the Columbia University Big Apple Invitational Tournament (CUBAIT) on October 26 and 27, 2013. Against a tough, even elite, field, Iona finished with a record of two wins, four losses, and two ties. This was the only tournament during the season in which Iona finished with a losing record. All four rounds were against teams ranked in the top 50 in the entire country, and all were very close and competitive. Senior Kimberleigh Constanzo won an individual attorney award on the defense side of the case, with 19 out of a possible 20 ranks.

Second tournament of the year was the WONK Invitational Tournament at American University on November 16th and 17, 2013. Against another tough field, Iona finished with a record of 6-2, and won the strength of schedule tiebreaker for second place. Kimberleigh Costanzo won her second individual award for being one of the top attorneys in the competition, finishing with 19 individual points out of a possible 20. Anastasia Nitis also won an attorney award with 18 individual points.

Iona’s regional tournament took place at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., on February 8 and 9, 2014. Iona finished in seventh place with a record of five wins, two losses, and one tie, which enabled Iona to qualify for the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCS) the following month. This was the sixth straight year in which Iona advanced past regionals. Three Iona students won individual awards: Anastasia Nitis won her second attorney award with 18 ranks, Mary Ann Gallucci won an attorney award with 17 ranks, and Amy Wert won a witness award with 18 ranks.

Iona’s ORCS tournament took place at the E. Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse on March 22 and 23, 2014. Against the toughest field of teams that Iona has ever faced, Iona finished in eight place out of 24 teams with a record of four wins, three looses, and one tie. Iona barely missed qualifying for the National Championship Tournament. Notably, this was the second year in a row (and the second time in Iona’s history) that Iona finished with a winning record at ORCS.

2013-2014 rankings have not yet been released, but it is likely that Iona’s ORCS finish will raise Iona’s national ranking from 70th to 65th in the country. This means that Iona will most likely be the highest ranked mock trial program in the country that fields only one team.

Faculty Achievements Mary Hagerty, Ph.D. Manuscript solicitation from Palgrave Macmillan editor to submit book proposal. “Women Who Win: Case Studies of New York State Assembly Women’s First Electoral Victory” Service in state legislatures is often a gateway to candidacy for higher national office, where women in particular are underrepresented relative to their numbers in the overall electorate. Dr. Hagerty’s research explores, via interviews and a survey questionnaire, a woman’s process in deciding to be a candidate in a New York State legislative election. Current research suggests that women, in common with many underrepresented groups, need to be encouraged to run for office, that there is a “gender gap in political ambition”, and that the reason there are not more women in elective office is that not enough women have been candidates. Conferences And Presentations Faculty-Student Research Project Iona College is participating in a cross-disciplinary and inter-collegiate Think Tank in partnership with the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) and the Westchester Alliance of Academic Institutions for Aging Related Studies (http://westchesterpartnership.org/wpll). Eight Iona College undergraduate students have been recruited to participate in the inter-collegiate Think Tank. The research design combines public policy, and state and local government literature and theory review; data collection via qualitative case studies of Westchester County and selected comparable counties. Questions for research include: New York state-local fiscal relations; local school and property taxes. What are fiscal challenges facing local governments? What are the possibilities of reducing taxes by way of local government consolidation and service-sharing? What are consequences of property taxes on older adults? Younger adults? What are current demographic trends? Students presented preliminary findings at Iona Scholars’ Day, April 8, 2014; and presented at the “Successful Aging” Conference sponsored by the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services on June 27, 2014. The student research findings will be part of the 2015 White House Conference on Aging recommendations from the Westchester County DSPS.

Book project, The Rise of Global Health: The Evolution of Effective Collective Action, was formally accepted by SUNYPress. The single-authored book is currently in production, and is scheduled for release March 2015. This project revisits prevailing notions in international relations scholarship that see greater multilateral involvement toward an issue area as inevitably leading to bureaucratic sclerosis, arguing instead that public health can be produced widely as a public good.
