Iona Preparatory School is a Catholic community inspired by the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice as expressed in the Essential Elements of a Christian Brothers Education. TheAcademicProgram Characteristics
All students are required to take 29 credits including four years of English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Theology and Science plus three years of a foreign language (unless exempt through accommodations). Half-year courses are required in Music, Studio Art, Health, Speech Communication, MS Office and Expository Writing. Elective courses in Broadcast Journalism, Concert Band and Philosophy can also be taken. Two credits of Physical Education over four yearsmustalsobecompleted.29creditsexceedtheNewYorkStatestandardof22credits.
SuperiorTalentEnrichmentProgram(STEP/HighHonors)andAPPlacement
Fifteen percent of each entering class are invited into theSTEPorHighHonorsProgram.These students scored in the first decile on theentranceexam.Therearetwopathswithintheprogram: Humanities based in English and History, and STEM based in accelerated Math and Science. This accelerated path includes access to an Advanced Placementcourseinfreshmanyear.These studentshaveconsistentlyscoredabove1300ontheSATcompositeofMathandReading.
Access to AP courses is contingent upon a grade of 95 in a previous honors subject class or continuingthelevelofcoursestudywithan88.
