MYSTYLE Nicholas Daley
The Scottish-Jamaican designer on musical inspiration, working with Mulberry and his lifelong love of hats
SIGNATURE LOOK I always start with accessories first when putting an outfit together. A good selection of hats is very important for me personally and the brand. Every season we always have a great selection from hand knitted beanies, Scottish machine knitted berets and oversized baker boy’s in a variety of tartan and checks. SARTORIAL INSPIRATION I try to constantly explore and unpick different strands of my heritage and identity in a way that feels authentic. I have a Scottish mother and Jamaican father, and often refer to my dual heritage when designing. It was a privilege to hold my first exhibition at the V&A Dundee back in 2019. I hope to continue to do more activations in Scotland in the future as it’s important to inspire the next generation of creative thinkers within the Scottish diaspora. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Whether it is developing tartan wools in Selkirk, knitwear in Hawick or wax cottons from Dundee, it’s always important to support Scottish craftsmanship and manufacturing within my collections.
Spiral beret, £165, Nicholas Daley STYLE ICONS Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. Musicians are a huge inspiration for me, both sonically and stylistically. I created my new range for Mulberry with the musicians and talents that I’ve worked with in mind. It’s almost like I was creating an accessories wardrobe for them to wear on stage. The team were so open and supportive about bringing new ideas to life – for example, it was the first time they’d created a guitar or saxophone strap.
