INTRODUCTION Summer is here and the team at ION has but together a helpful guide for things that we feel are worth checking out. This time asked some of the people that are putting Vancouver on the map what they like to do in our fine city as well, just to round it out. So once you have had your fill of sitting on the beach, get out there and visit some of these places. You can thank us later.

ProFILE: Blaine Thurier Blaine Thurier (second from the left) is a member of Vancouver supergroup The New Pornographers. He’s also a filmmaker and his most recent film, A Gun To The Head, premiered at The Toronto International Film Festival.
Favourite Things About Vancouver…Best takeout? It’s a tie between the Korean stand upstairs in Robson Public Market (best bibimbap of all time), and Rice n’ Spice in the Royal Centre food court. Favourite restaurant for a sit down meal? Gyoza King by far. It’s the place I miss the most when I’m on tour. None of the recently opened Japanese tapas places come close even though some are really good. Best bar? I haven’t found one. I miss the Marine Club. Somebody please tell me a good bar in Vancouver.
Best place for live music? The Starfish Room. Sigh. (note: it’s been closed for a over decade). What’s your favourite local band/musician? I couldn’t name just one and they’re mostly friends. I love what my bandmates are doing. Kathryn Calder’s upcoming solo album is fantastic. I also really like Todd Fancey’s stuff. Who’s your favourite local artist Jason MacLean. Is he still considered local? What are your summer plans? Tour tour tour tour. In other words, work work work.
Three things people should do when they visit Vancouver? Go to Stanely Park, eat sushi and help us pay the six billion dollar bill for the Olympics. Best free activity? Walking the seawall. What do you like most about the city? The mountains, the ocean, the great Asian food. On my days off I’m... Spending time with my wife and four year old son. www.thenewpornographers.com www.imdb.com/name/nm0862151

ProFILE: Trevor Risk If you run into Trevor early in the afternoon, he’ll be working hard on the next issue of ION Magazine where he’s the music editor. Dinnertime with Mister Risk will require earplugs as you’ll probably be in a rehearsal space listening to his pop band The Good News, who will bring heavenly verses and choruses down from the clouds for you. Late nights with our hero are spent at the finest nightclubs in Vancouver where he can been spotted DJing. Whether it’s his 50s/60s night, or his raging glitz-house evenings, you’ll enjoy yourself and tip a few bottles. Find Vancouver, find Trevor, and you’ve found yourself a pretty fab weekend.
5 Best Bands from Vancouver? The Modernettes Made probably the best hit of all Vancouver acts with “Barbara”. As legend has it lead singer Buck Cherry penned the song in five minutes on a drunken bet that he could write a better pop song than anything at the time. “Barbara” is spelled differently in the lyrics than in the title, which Buck couldn’t care less about. The Pointed Sticks The first Canadian band signed to Stiff Records. Perfect Youth the first album by the band never got released by the financially troubled label, but with reissues of it and a brand new album Three Lefts Make A Right the Pointed Sticks
have gone down in perfect harmony history. 54-40 Yeah, they wrote that song for some blowfish-y band, but before it was golfrocked out the song was an emotionally honest jam from the West coast of Canada. Pile on other songs like “Baby Ran”, “Blame Your Parents” and not being too ego bloated to release a track on the tribute (yes, tribute!) album to the fictional band in Bruce McDonald’s film Hard Core Logo and you’re left with an act that has no holes in it.
(and possibly the world’s) best metal act. The New Pornographers Not only does this supergroup have several records worth of hits, all the members’ solo albums are also devoid of filler. It’s rare nowadays to find a band that has the onions to skip fads and gimmicks and attempt to write the kind of songs that last forever instead… and with complete success.
3 Inches of Blood Two frontmen, four albums, two EPs, and a penchant for the new wave of British heavy metal is an excellent formula for the city’s
