National Junior Membership Drive

The National Junior Membership Drive has been a great success. The contest is continuing and we encourage everyone to sign up new national junior members. There are two categories: the state with the highest percentage of increase and the state with the highest increase in individual members. Membership increase will be determined by an initial count on January 1, 2022 and a final count on June 1, 2022. Membership applications can be downloaded at www.holsteinusa.com/juniors/content/membership.html. The fee for National Junior Membership is $20 and is a one-time fee for juniors from birth to age 21. Junior Holstein Spring Meeting & Lunch Stand

Mark your calendars now to attend the next Iowa Junior Holstein meeting scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. March 19 in the Stephen’s Building at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in West Union. This is the same day as the State Holstein Sale. The Iowa Juniors will be helping serve the complimentary meal. Please bring wrapped bars or cookies for the complimentary meal.

Public Speaking Contest

For those of you who are interested in the Public Speaking Contest, please let Jeff Hammerand know by March 19. There are three age divisions: Junior (9-13), Intermediate (14-17), and Senior (18-21) all as of January 1, 2020. National Cow Awards

In an effort to recognize more youth, Holstein Association USA Production/Breeder awards are automatically calculated. Juniors are no longer required to submit entries for these awards. Information regarding the various cow awards can be found at www. holsteinusa.com/juniors/content/jr_award.html.

2022 National Convention Delegates

The 2021 Iowa Junior Holstein Convention was held December 27-28 at the Comfort Inn, Dyersville. Approximately 40 juniors attended the convention.

The convention was kicked off with a knowledge test to see who would compete on the quiz bowl teams and in the jeopardy contest for the 2022 National Holstein Convention. The convention will be held in Sioux Falls, SD, with the theme being “Progress on the Plains”.

The meeting was held and new officers were elected as follows: President - Regan Demmer, Vice President - Trenton Hammerand, Secretary – Raegan Kime, Treasurer - Brynlee Volker, Reporter – Lane Domeyer, the afternoon was filled with fun ice breaker activities, games and pool time. We danced the night away as well as had a hula-hoop contest and played musical chairs. After working up an appetite at the dance, we finished off the night with card games.

The juniors would like to thank the parents and adults that assisted with the convention! We look forward to next year’s Iowa Junior Holstein Convention. The next Iowa Junior Holstein meeting will be held at the State Sale on March 19 at 10:00 am at the West Union Fairgrounds. Hope to see you there!

Raegan Kime, daughter of Dann and Annette kime, is currently a freshman at Iowa State University. Raegan is currently serving as the Iowa Junior Holstein Secretary and has represented Iowa at National Holstein Conventions in both Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Quiz Bowl. She is also the 2021/2022 Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate.

While in high school, Raegan was active in 4-H and FFA where she received various awards. She also received the Hixon Opportunity Award, Lawler Lions Volunteerism Award, American Legion Oratorical Regional Winner, Eric O Hoiberg Scholarship in Public Service and Andrew Teiskotter Agricultural Award. She was also the 2021 Guernsey Princess, student body Vice President and a American Red Cross Volunteer.

At Iowa State University Raegan is involved in the Dairy Science Club, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, CALS Council, and National Agri-Marketers Association where she holds various leadership positions. She plans to study within the National Student Exchange Program and travel to different universities within the US to further her studies about agricultural policy.

Her future plans are to work within the USDA and advocate American agriculture internationally by working with overseas trading. She would also like to explore different career options within the US Dairy Exports Council and advocate and market for the dairy industry internationally.

Amber Engelken, daughter of Tom and Cherrie Engelken grew up on their family 220-cow dairy farm. She helps with chores such as milking cows, diagnosing and treating sick animals, cleaning the barn, and co-managing the breeding program focusing mostly on the small herd of her own.

She is currently a sophomore at Iowa State University majoring in Dairy Science with minors in Agronomy and Environmental Studies. Amber served as the 2020 Iowa Holstein Princess where she was able to assist at different district and state shows by handing out awards and pulling card. I served as the 2020-2021 Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate. Her duties included communicating about dairy products with consumers, advocating for all types of agriculture at various events, and taking advantage of different social media platforms to share information. Amber has attended Junior Holstein Conventions in the past. She has also competed in the speech contest at National Convention in 2019.

At Iowa State University Amber stays busy by serving as the Vice-President in addition to being a co-chair to the Youth Dairy Coalition and in the past the Historian. She is also involved in Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority and serves as an AnCy Guide for Iowa State University. Amber also stays involved in the Ames Community by helping out at Food at First and cleaning up trash from ditches on a local highway. Congratulations Amber!

Faith Palmer, daughter of John and Meghan Palmer of Waukon is currently attending Iowa State University where she is majoring in Dairy Science and minoring in General Business. School has always been very important to Faith. Regardless of her schedule, she is dedicated to my school work and believes that education is important. She chose to further her education with a college degree to further her knowledge and contribute to the advancement of agriculture and her family farming operation. She has looked forward to focusing her education on agriculture and having the opportunities to intern and possibly even study abroad.

She is stays involved at Iowa State being a Dairy Science club officer, co-chair to the Education Committee, helps with Food at First and Youth Dairy Coalition. Faith also serves as the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Representative and is on the dairy judging team.

While in high school, Faith was active in 4-H and FFA, Allamakee County Dairy Promotion Board and Zion United Church of Christ Youth Member, Choir and Basketball.

Faith has received various awards throughout her time as an Iowa Junior Holstein Member. She was a member of the 2017 Junior Quiz Bowl Team, 2018 Intermediate Jeopardy, the 2019 Senior Quiz Bowl Team where they received 5th overall and was a part of the 2022 Scrapbook. Faith has actively shown cattle, served as the Treasurer in 2018 and helped with several years in the concessions stand at the State Sale.

“The dairy industry is still at the forefront of my goals and career aspirations. Because of my upbringing on my family’s dairy farm, I have developed a passion for dairy cattle and dairy science and would like to pursue a career in a dairy-related field after graduating Iowa State University in May of 2023,” said Faith.

Regan Demmer is the 20 year old son of Rick & Kathy Demmer, youngest of seven children. He is actively involved in Junior Holstein and is currently serving as the association President. Regan has held various other officer positions in Junior Holstein, helped plan State Junior Conventions and represented Iowa at several National Junior Conventions in Dairy Jeopardy, Dairy Bowl, and Public Speaking. At Iowa Junior Holstein Conventions he is a consistent winner in hula-hoop and limbo contests. His early involvement and success culminated in him being named Young Distinguished Junior Member at the 2017 National Convention.

Regan has tremendous passion for his family and their registered Holstein operation. Their diverse operation has taught him to be reliable and responsible. He has carried these traits forward into his preparations for dairy quiz bowl and judging contests. His eagerness to learn has inspired his teammates. Through hours of hard work, Regan has led his team to national competitions in both FFA and 4-H. His resume attests to his accomplishments in these organizations, with a highlight of earning All-American honors in the 2019 4-H Dairy Judging contest at World Dairy Expo.

Regan’s passion for the Holstein cow is evident, as he has garnered many showring successes. Along with numerous Junior AllIowa awards he has shown Ooh-La-La and Pretty In-Red to outstanding results on a National level. His latest accomplishment was leading home-bred Le-O-La Artist Always to a win in the Milking Yearling Class at 2021 World Dairy Expo Junior Show.

Congratulations to Regan, on being selected an Iowa Distinguished Junior Member. He embodies all things an Iowa Junior Holstein member should be.

Welcome to the world, Millie Kathryn Buddenberg! Millie was born on January 26, 2022 weighing 8 pounds, 14 ounces and 20 3/4 inches long. Mille is the daughter to members Chanse and Michelle Buddenberg of Decroah. It’s been mentioned that brother Gage is prertty proud of his new sister. Millie’s grandparents are Bruce and Julie Buddenberg and Greg and Kathy Vonachen. Congratulations to Chanse and Michelle!

Mildred Lucille (Miller) Lyons, 96, of rural Ossian, was born on April 21, 1925 to Christian and Gertrude (Hill) Miller in Alexander, IA. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at the Methodist Church in Clarion, IA. Mildred graduated from Clarion High School in 1944.

On July 22, 1944, she married Lester Lyons at the Methodist Parsonage in Clarion. They became parents of eleven children. Together they farmed in various communities and moved to their home in Ossian in 1993 before moving to the Ossian Senior Hospice in May of 2021. Mildred had worked at Montgomery Ward, was a bookkeeper for Pioneer Seed, Sweeney’s Village Farm and Home and the Ossian Senior Hospice.

Mildred was known as mom to many youths around the state. She was a 4-H Leader for 22 years and was a youth advisor for local and state Jr. Holstein Association. She was one of the founders of the Holstein Cookbook, spending many hours making it a huge success. She enjoyed attending many cattle shows, fairs and watching her grandkids at their sporting events. Mildred was known at the Iowa State Fair for soaping the “Old Mill” and joining kids “young and old” going down the giant slide.

Lester and Mildred enjoyed ballroom dancing. Her cookie jar was always full of chocolate chip cookies for any visitor and a candy drawer for the grandkids. Any family gathering had her cranberry and lemon/lime salads, with the day ending with goulash (made with home grown tomatoes) and chips. She always had a large garden.

She was a diehard Chicago Cub fan along with her son Scott and many other family members. She always loved cuddling babies and kitties. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. Mildred was one of the founders and secretary for the Iowa Holstein Futurity, was on the board at Spectrum Industries and ARC in Decorah, Iowa State Holstein Auxiliary and on the first NICC Dairy Foundation Board. She was recipient of the Holstein Hall of Fame and 4-H Alumni for Winneshiek County. Mildred was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2015.

Max LeRoy Hall, age 83, a lifetime resident of Poweshiek County, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Brooklyn Community Estate, Brooklyn, Iowa.

Max was born May 6, 1938 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the son of Richard J. Hall and Jean M. (Miller) Hall. He attended Bear Creek #4 (Sigafoose) and Brooklyn Elementary schools and graduated with the Brooklyn High School Class of 1956. Max and Dorothy “Dotty” Rayl were married on December 27, 1958 at Madison Church of Christ, rural Brooklyn. Max was a dairy farmer for over 40 years. He then worked for Kent Feed in Brooklyn until his retirement. Later he worked part-time for Monsanto, Rohrer Brothers of Victor, and the Brooklyn Elevator.

Max was an active member of the Brooklyn community. He was a member of the Mid-American Dairymen’s Association, National and Iowa Holstein Associations, the Brooklyn -Victor Country Club, the Madison Church of Christ, and served on the Brooklyn Mutual Telephone board. In his earlier years, Max played softball in the summer, bowled in men’s and mixed bowling leagues, and golfed with his family and friends. Closer to retirement the couple enjoyed motorcycle riding on their trike with local friends, attending rallies, camping, and meeting new friends.

Luella Rose Hammerand, 85, of Sherrill, passed away Monday, December 13, 2021, at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque. Luella was born November 9, 1936, in Dubuque, the daughter of Frank and Mary Schmitt. On August 28, 1962, she married Virgil Hammerand in Church of the Nativity, Dubuque. Luella was a long-time attendee of the Sherrill United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed helping Virgil farm and providing for her family, even through the toughest times. Luella was an assistant 4H leader. She volunteered her time with the Dubuque County Fair Association for over 20 years.

Luella enjoyed playing Euchre, Rummy, watching Westerns. She enjoyed country music and loved to dance. Luella was a fabulous cake decorator and an amazing cook! Her family would always enjoy her homemade pies and strawberry jelly. She was liked and loved by everyone who knew her.

Harold Eggink, age 90 of Sibley, IA passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at Osceola Regional Hospital in Sibley, IA. Harold John Eggink was born on December 6, 1931 to Herman and Nettie (VanHeuvelen) at his parents’ home 2 ½ miles south east of Melvin. He attended country grade school at Baker Twp and Cloverdale#1. He went to Melvin High school and graduated in 1949. That summer he took a course in Ames to become a DHIA supervisor in Pocahontas and Sioux counties.

In December of 1952 his friends and neighbors volunteered him to serve in the Army, that’s what he would tell about being drafted. He spent his 21st birthday on the train to basic training at Ft. Knox, KY. He was sent overseas to Korea, in the infantry combat unit in North Korea for two months. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge.When the armistice was signed his unit had to move south to the 38th parallel, which was the dividing line between North and South Korea. He was a border guard until he was rotated back to the states to Fort Carson, CO. He earned the rank of Sgt. then spent a few months as an instructor at N.C.O. school.

In 1965 he married Luella Vandervoort, whom he met at the Arkota dance hall in Sioux Falls. We were blessed with three children and so proud they all graduated from college.

Harold returned to Iowa and rented some farmland and he helped his father farm along with dairying with Registered Holsteins.He began building a herd of Registered Holstein cattle which was his specialty. He loved breeding and showing Holsteins. He spent 10 years in 4-H with dairy projects. He exhibited at the Osceola Co. Fair, Clay Co. Fair for 50+ years, South Dakota state fair, Iowa State Fair, All Iowa Fair, National Dairy Cattle Congress and World Dairy Expo. He judged dairy shows in Iowa, SD, and Minn. He became active in the District Holstein Assn, and the Iowa State Holstein Assn. He was president of the Iowa Holstein Assn and President of the Iowa P.D.C.A. He was a delegate to the National Holstein Convention for nine years. He served on the Iowa-Nebraska Dairy Council and the district board of AMPI. He was actively involved with the REC. He served 30 years on the Osceola Co. REC, many years as president. He served on the L&O Power Co-op for 20 years and two years as a director on the State REC board. He was a member of the Melvin Reformed church where he served as a Deacon, and later became a member of the First Reformed church in Sibley. He loved to travel and somehow made it work with the dairy operation with help from his nephew, Leroy and his sons. He has been to 79 of the 99 Iowa counties, 42 of the 50 states, and to 6 foreign countries. His trip with his 94 year old dad to the Netherlands was very memorable.
