Chairman’s Message
Ralph Arthur, Ruan Transportation Management Systems I have had the pleasure of working in the trucking industry for 30 years. Throughout that time, I have met a lot of different people and have had some really wonderful Ralph Arthur experiences. IMTA Chairman of the Board However, serving as the IMTA Chairman of the Board over the last year certainly ranks right up there as far as rewarding and memorable. For those that know me, I am not a real sentimental guy. I value my life experiences but also maintain the perspective that you live in the moment and need to make the most out of every experience and then move on. Some of that may be a result of my military background as well as my

upbringing, but it has served me well over the years and pretty much sums me up. But over the last 12 months, I will say that some of my experiences as the IMTA chairman have stayed with me much longer than I anticipated and it was a positive experience that I will carry with me for a very long time. Understandably there were many highlights throughout the course of this journey, but most notable was the numerous opportunities I had to meet IMTA members and become better acquainted with the people that collectively make up Iowa’s trucking industry. As is the case in any industry, the variety of personalities and business philosophies that prevail are fascinating to me and the commitment that so many of you have to your business, the industry and the association is admirable and heartwarming. I had the privilege of interacting with people that in many cases, had built their companies from the ground up and the pride and confidence
they displayed in their operations was always touching and admirable. Meeting the members at various events was a tremendous highlight and learning about the rich history of the association through the eyes of the members was fascinating and enjoyable. I am not a native of Iowa so I was also fortunate enough to get to travel throughout the state and equally enjoyed seeing the state and its variety of rolling landscapes and terrains. The hospitality and genuine pride displayed by everyone we met was a poignant example of why Iowa is certainly in a league of its own. I interacted with regulators and legislators on both the state and national level. I addressed the press from time to time and walked away from those experiences with an even greater appreciation of the value of our association’s constant and steady role as a voice and advocate for the industry.
The scope and breadth of the association involvement was far greater than I knew and the involvement by the membership and IMTA leaders was always compelling. Rarely will you find this kind of support especially in this day and age when everyone is consumed with simply trying to stay above water and ahead of the next challenge imposed by an out of touch federal agency. While I would like to say that my involvement as your Chairman made an impact with legislators and regulators …. we all know that would be very presumptuous statement. So instead, I am going to use this final column as a platform to encourage and prod you to stay involved with the association. One voice is not going to get the job done.
Like you, I wasn’t sure what kind of an impact I could make several years ago when I started to come to IMTA events and volunteered to serve on committees. As I moved on to the Board of Directors, I quickly realized that there is power in numbers and supporting the one organization that unifies and brings our industry together was essential. You too, must have that same commitment to the cause by staying involved, active and engaged with IMTA. While some will argue it doesn’t matter because the regulators and legislators will continue to pass unreasonable laws and rules, consider how much worse it could be if we weren’t fighting and defending the industry? As I have heard many times and agree wholeheartedly, it is better to be at

the table than on the table. I have had the honor over the last 12 months to serve the membership as the Chairman of the Board and in that time, I discovered very quickly that we have many, many members that believe in our mission and support our efforts. Because of that, I have no doubt in my mind that IMTA will continue to be the most effective and powerful advocate we have today and far into the future! Be a part of this successful team. Thank you for all the tremendous support you gave to me personally as well as to IMTA over the last year. I urge you to continue to show your support of IMTA and if you are involved STAY INVOLVED. Supporting IMTA is the best investment you can make for yourself, your company and your livelihood. I look forward to our continued work together and will always be grateful for the time I served as an IMTA officer.

President’s Message
Brenda Neville, Iowa Motor Truck Association Now that we know who the players will be in DC come January, we have an obligation to help them get an understanding and appreciation of Brenda Neville our issues and IMTA President & CEO our industry. Far too often, people think their work is done once they cast their votes, and in reality, our work has just begun. During the campaign season, IMTA staff and leaders do a number of things to familiarize the candidates with the association and its priorities. However, during the campaign season, the candidates are inundated with a lot of people doing the same thing we are doing. And frankly, the candidates are focused on other things such as securing votes and raising money. I am not suggesting that our efforts during the campaign season are not important, but some of our most important work begins now as we continue to build a positive working relationship with these newly elected leaders. Our new Senator, Joni Ernst met with the executive committee and she certainly has an understanding of the trucking industry and even knows the difference between a Freightliner and Peterbilt. But now we will provide her with the tools to have an even greater understanding of some of the regulatory barriers we are facing and some of the tremendous obstacles that are hampering the trucking industry. David Young also met with the executive committee and served a Chief of Staff for Senator Chuck Grassley. Congressman Young has some tremendous insight on
working in DC but what does he know about the trucking industry? We can help him gain an understanding of what the industry is all about and its impact to our state and nation. Congressman Rod Blum is a business owner and has valuable expertise from that vantage point but what is his experience when it comes to the trucking industry? Fortunately his business background will be pivotal as he applies that common sense approach to his efforts in congress. But to add to his expertise, we want to share information about the trucking industry. One of the most effective ways to help a lawmaker learn about the industry is to get them into a trucking company. Giving them that visual experience is a powerful and effective opportunity to gain an ally for life. Putting a face and a name on the industry is compelling and humanizes an industry that far too often is unfairly characterized by images of big trucks and grisly accident scenes. Once you get them into your company, show them the lengths you go to be safe. Show them the technology and manpower you use to ensure that every truck that leaves your company also returns. Let them see the efforts you put into rewarding your good drivers and introduce them to the legions of people in your company that dedicate every day to ensuring that they get the products they rely on. Explain to them the financial risks you take to provide for a good job for all your employees and tell them about the many sleepless nights you have as an owner of a trucking company for more reasons than they can even imagine. Let them see the reality of trying to stay in compliance and the toll it takes on everyone as well as your bottom line. Have a frank and honest conversation with them
and introduce them to all facets of your operation and the many challenges that are part of your daily life. Then as a final and added bonus to their visit, put them in a truck. Let them really experience the view from the driver’s seat. If time would allow, take them for a ride and let them experience firsthand the realities of sharing the road with other drivers. Let them see what it is like to be sharing the road with drivers that seem to find texting and talking on their phones more important than safety and courtesy. This whole experience could take 30 minutes or 3 hours, but the benefits of this effort will last a lifetime for that elected official and will do more to advance our message than any number of expensive public relations activities. This kind of a grassroots approach is too often overlooked and we intend to get back to basics in 2015 and utilize our membership base to help us get out the message about trucking. One of our first projects will be to identify members to reach out to our newly elected US Senator and Congressmen between now and when they head to DC in January and set up a company tour. Are you interested? These elected leaders are the voice we have chosen and now it is our obligation to ensure that they can be an effective and informed voice when it comes to our issues in DC. Thank you for all your support throughout the long campaign and election season. I was extremely proud of IMTA members for stepping up and getting involved and in the end, for being part of voting for some much needed change in DC.

New Chairman for IMTA Jackie Johnsrud Steps into IMTA’s Highest Leadership Role
Jackie has been around trucks her entire life. As a child she fondly remembers her father as a trucker Jackie and Robert Meyer in front of one of Johnsrud’s and then as an owner patriotic trucks. of a trucking company located in her home town of Cresco, Iowa. Her father, Leon, started in the business as a young man picking up milk cans in Northeast Iowa and transporting them to her grandfather’s cheese factory. When Leon made the transition from driver to owner, he started with a fleet of refrigerated trucks but in the early 1980s, he moved into the food grade business and the BIG J, as Johnsrud Transport is commonly referred to by its employees, has been synonymous with the shiny tankers ever since.

in the maintenance department where she threw herself into learning about tractor specs and purchasing equipment, Jackie was committed to learning everything she could. “The one thing about Jackie is that she isn’t content just getting an answer, she wants to know what is behind that answer and wants a thorough understanding of whatever she is dealing with. She wants to understand it to the point that she can make an educated decision and be an active participant in the process,” said Dave Nelson, a salesman with Freightliner of Des Moines and longtime colleague and friend to Jackie. In 2002, Jackie was named President and CEO of Johnsrud Transport and has been a positive and valued leader for the company. She credits her own success to the many lessons her father taught her and has great respect for his leadership in the company. In addition, her mother’s continued guidance & support is of equal importance and something she leans on yet today as well. “My dad taught me everything I know about trucking and I want to be a responsible steward of his legacy. My mom taught me the value of staying true to myself. I’ve always had a great deal of support,” said Jackie. She credits the company’s ongoing success to the management team and employees of the company and considers it an honor to work with the people of Johnsrud Transport.
Now headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, Johnsrud Transport operates 140 trucks serving customers throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. The company has been a committed and active IMTA member for over three decades and is recognized throughout the food grade industry for its customer service, commitment to quality, reliability and dependability. As is often the case with a successful trucking company, Johnsrud Transport has a legion of loyal and dedicated employees with many of them being there for several decades. Since 1989, Jackie has been on the payroll. Starting at the company shortly after graduating from college with a degree in finance, Jackie decided to pursue a career in trucking. “When I approached my dad about working in the company, he was happy to bring me on board but he very quickly pointed out that it would not be easy and I was not above being fired,” said Jackie. In her early years at Johnsrud, she worked in a variety of departments in an effort to get an understanding and appreciation of the business. From receptionist to operations to even a stint

the Iowa Truck Driving Championships and is challenging every board member to send at least one driver to this important event. “The truck driving championships is one of the greatest things we can do to show our appreciation to our drivers. I cannot understand why companies do not get involved and as I have always done, I will be putting the pressure on my fellow IMTA members to participate and back up their convictions to their drivers,” said Jackie.

The Big J culture is one of mutual respect and courtesy. Drivers and managers alike will easily give accolades to the company and the prevailing atmosphere that encourages long term employment.
“I believe that everyone comes to the job to do the best they can and if there is a problem, our emphasis is on the process and refining the process rather than focusing on the employee and viewing it as their mistake,” said Jackie. The Johnsrud Transport culture was cultivated by Leon when he first started the company. From the very beginning, Leon emphasized the importance of the drivers and illustrated his commitment to that unwavering philosophy in countless ways.
Jackie’s sincere passion for the industry is demonstrated in her actions and commitment at every level. Trucking is her life and she is proud to be a part of the industry. Over the years she has actively served on the IMTA board and various association committees. In addition, she is a tireless advocate and volunteer for other worthwhile causes most notably Special Olympics and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Just weeks before being named Chairman of the Board, Jackie’s brother Stuart lost his lifetime battle with Type 1 Diabetes. Like Jackie, Stuart too had been involved with trucking his entire life and had been an active member of the Johnsrud Transport management team right up to his death. “He was my rock, my best friend and an amazing individual that led by example every day. Despite his many health challenges, he always remained positive and true to his core values. He continues to influence everything I do and Iowa’s trucking industry and Johnsrud Transport is better because of his contributions,” said Jackie. As she kicks off her year as IMTA’s newest leader, she looks forward to working with other IMTA leaders and getting acquainted with more members. She easily cites three major issues that are currently plaguing the industry and impacting IMTA members across the state; regulatory overload, driver shortage and deteriorating image. And believes aggressive and effective work on the image of the industry will go a long way in improving the other two big challenges, regulatory overload and driver shortage. “We have a compelling story to tell and we have not done a good job of telling our story. We can no longer kick that can down the road; we have to invest the time, energy and resources into telling the story of the trucking industry and commit ourselves to collectively working on our image. We all have a responsibility in this campaign and we need to act now,” said Jackie.
“The drivers are the most important part of a trucking company, if you don’t have drivers, you don’t have a company and too often the drivers are overlooked,” said Leon Johnsrud, who continues to have a daily presence at the company. That same philosophy was easily passed on to Jackie and remains her number one priority yet today. Jackie is a strong and relentless advocate for truck drivers and makes it a point to always highlight and recognize the drivers for the important role they play. “There are so many things that we need to do to place the emphasis back on the drivers. Something as easy as the manner in which we talk about drivers,” said Jackie. As the Chairman of IMTA, she hopes to change that over the course of the next year and is excited about kicking off several image campaigns and efforts that will help highlight the value of the truck driver. Additionally, Jackie will continue to be a leader in promoting

Impacting the Trucking Industry Strong Economy according to 3Q Earnings by Fleets Nationwide Third-quarter earnings at nearly all publicly traded trucking businesses are predicted to show solid year-over-year growth. This surge in earnings is due to higher rates and an improving economy according to industry analysts.
On average, LTL earnings are expected to rise nearly 40% faster than truckload or logistics operations with help from the manufacturing growth according to Bloomburg News average estimates. It is predicted that 27 or the 29 publicly traded companies are expected to top last year’s third-quarter results, based on analysts’ forecasts. In general however, analysts believe that LTL operations will be the real winner in the third quarter.
More States Need Road Money, Renewed Interest in Mileage Tax
As the road funding debate continues across the nation, more and more states are looking at other creative solutions to securing funding for road and bridge construction and improvements. Membership in a group created last year to explore the mileage tax alternative – the Western Road Usage Charge Consortium – has 11 states in its membership as of late this summer. The group insists that the increase in interest is not because Congress has failed to do anything on the national level but rather

that fact that projected gas tax programs are simply not going to be able to bring in the revenue needed for the long term, according to the group’s director, Reema Griffith. As states continue to look at trend data that shows gas-powered cars are now reaching 30, 40 and 50 miles to the gallon and then you through in electric and hybrid cars, there is a real concern about having enough revenue to accommodate the increasing needs for infrastructure on a state by state basis. Oregon will begin it second mileagetax pilot program next summer as well California. Washington is also authorizing a pilot program although no launch date has been set. Several other states have looked at this option as well and it is predicted that the mileage tax will continue to get some interest as more and more states grapple with road funding priorities. Iowa lawmakers developed legislation last year which offered an excise tax on the wholesale price gas and diesel fuel and it is expected that the same type of “hybrid” legislation will be introduced again this year.
September Truck Tonnage at AllTime High Truck tonnage in September hit an all-time high, rising 3.7% from a year earlier and capping the highest quarter on record as reported by the American
Trucking Associations (ATA). Tonnage in the July to September period jumped 2.4% from the second quarter and 4% from the third quarter in 2013. September data was a mixed bag however, according to ATA economist Bob Costello. On a month to month basis, retail sales were down more than expected, factory output was up and tonnage split in the middle. One trucking analyst however, reports that while less-than-truckload volumes were strong through the third quarter, levels may have flattened slightly in the first few weeks of October.
FMCSA Proposing Dropping Requirement that Drivers with Diabetes Seek Exemption – The
FMCSA is scheduled to publish a proposed rule in April 2015 that would drop a current requirement that insulintreated interstate truck drivers with diabetes apply for a special exemption to be issued a medical certificate card. From 1979 to 2003, there had been a ban prohibiting any driver using insulin was banned from driving commercial vehicles. However, in 2004, FMCSA began accepting applications for a diabetes exemption which would allow drivers to be given medical certificates on a case by case basis every two years.

Joni Ernst Becomes First Woman to Represent Iowa in US Senate
A jubilant Joni Ernst thanked Iowans for their tremendous support on election night and vowed to do her best to not only represent her supporters but also work for those that did not support her. In addition to being the first woman to represent Iowa in DC, Joni is also the first military veteran to serve in the US Senate. Based on her military background, it comes as no surprise that she will focus her work in DC on veteran’s affairs as well as agriculture. She also has promised to work on minimizing the regulatory overreach that is plaguing many businesses including trucking and supports efforts to create a more probusiness environment. In a historic move, IMTA leaders made the decision to endorse Joni as the US Senate candidate and IMTA backed up that support by getting involved with her campaign efforts on all levels. It was one of the most expensive campaigns in the history of Iowa politics as Joni took on Congressman Bruce Braley. Braley gave up his house seat to run for the US Senate seat vacated by Tom Harkin. At the onset of the race, Braley was considered a shoe in especially when five Republicans came forward campaigning for the seat. Joni however, prevailed in the primaries and went on to defeat Braley by 7 points. Joni personally called supporters following the election and in a phone call with IMTA President Brenda Neville, Joni thanked IMTA members for their support and said she looks forward to working with the trucking industry on their issues of concern and also looks forward to meeting with the IMTA delegation when they come to DC.

The Surprise of the 2014 Iowa Elections – Rod Blum Elected to Represent Iowa’s First Congressional District
Blum won with just more than 51 percent of the vote in the closest of Iowa’s five federal races on the ballot.
Blum, 59, a Dubuque native, will succeed U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Waterloo, who vacated his seat to run for U.S. Senate. The district is a gain for U.S. House Republicans.
Restoring the American dream is the goal, he said.
Republican Rod Blum, a businessman who painted himself as a political outsider, defeated Democrat Pat Murphy in a tight race for Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.
The 1st District spans northeast Iowa and includes Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Dubuque. Though it tends to vote Democratic, the district has a sizable share of independent and noparty voters. Registered voters include 33 percent Democrats, 28 percent Republicans and 40 percent no party or other.
In his victory speech, Blum said the win was not about him, but “about the future direction of the United States of America. It’s about what kind of a country do we want our children and grandchildren to inherit?”
Murphy had begun the race with momentum from a win in a five-way Democratic primary and the advantage of name recognition over Blum. Murphy is well known in the district, having spent 25 years in the Iowa Legislature. But Blum prevailed and looks forward to working with IMTA members on issues of concern.

Are Higher Insurance Minimums Necessary?

According to a regulatory update at a recent ATA Safety Management Council Conference in Orlando, higher insurance minimums are coming.
A proposal that could eventually require higher insurance minimum levels for trucking companies is close to publication. The release of the proposal is expected to be published in the Federal Register sometime before the end of the year, but sources say that the agency is a long way from making any changes. The present standards of $750,000 for general freight, $1 million for hazardous materials, and $5 million for the most dangerous hazardous materials goods were set way back in 1985, so maybe it’s time to at least review the data used to set these standards. In the 2012 MAP-21 highway bill, congress ordered a study of the issue in response to the increasing costs of crashes. As it drafted the law, Congress considered raising the insurance minimums from $750,000 to $1 million, but eventually decided that the proper path would be for FMCSA to prepare an analysis that could become the basis for any necessary changes in the standard. Congress also ordered that FMCSA future-forward, conduct a review every four years. FMCSA found that catastrophic crashes where costs exceed the current minimum standards are very rare, with just 1% of crashes going over the minimum levels. They also found, however, that when they do go over the minimums, the costs easily exceed $1 million.
The reason for a small percentage of crashes to exceed $1 million is generally increased medical costs. This is due to the fact that the medical consumer price index has exceeded the pace of inflation in 28 of the past 29 years. The study focused mainly on freight carriers, but is also applicable to uses and hazmat carriers. The motorcoach industry has seen an increase of attention by the National Transportation Safety Board. In the bus industry, post-crash investigations suggest that contributing factors include the driver, the mechanical condition of the bus, and the carrier’s operations. Many of the recent bus incidents were rollover crashes with multiple-fatalities, or multiple-victims. While the cost of insurance is not a set standard, but it is set on a carrierby-carrier basis, it is believed that if insurance minimums were pegged to the medical consumer price index most companies could not afford the insurance premiums. One 2013 study recommended a minimum of $10 million, to be indexed to inflation and productivity growth. A recent American Trucking Associations review supported different findings than the FMCSA study. The ATA review looked at the risk of a carrier who experienced a crash with costs that exceeded the minimums. It found that the chance of a claim exceeding $500,000 was 1.4%, the chance of going over $1 million was 0.73%, and the chance of going over $2 million is just 0.31%. ATA found that the average cost of claims between 2006 and 2011 was $11,229.
FMCSA has seemingly ignored the details of this study, and seem to be continuing on their mission to raise the minimum limits. The Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee met recently in Alexandria, Virginia, and determined that the agency needs more information about the costs of insurance and claims, more information on the impact of insurance costs on carriers, and more information on the frequency of catastrophic claims. A bill has been proposed in Congress that would force FMCSA to cease any effort on raising the insurance minimums, but it has not gained any speed or support at this time. This is a strong indicator, however, that there is significant opposition to any changes in the insurance minimums. Whatever the outcome of these studies and information gathering activities, a proposal would still have to go through the same notice and comment process before a final rule can be published by FMCSA. It seems like common sense that if less than 1% of claims within the industry currently exceed the established minimums, why change the requirements? We don’t manage our businesses based on a less than 1% chance, so why base the insurance minimums on the same percentage of chance?
A Volpe study has also been conducted, and it shows that there is no reason to raise the minimum limits.

Members in the News Weinrich Drivers Named Finalists for America’s Road Team
Randall Luschen and Terry Rankins of Weinrich Truck Line
Weinrich Drivers Randall Luschen and Terry Rankins are two of the 32 finalists for the 2015 America’s Road Team. The two drivers will travel to DC in January and compete with 30 other professional drivers for a spot on the team. A panel of industry officials and trucking news media will judge the contestants on their knowledge of trucking, safety, and their ability to communicate. Each driver’s safety record is reviewed as well.
To be nominated to serve as America’s Road Team captain, a professional truck driver must be employed or leased to an ATA member company. Each nominee should have an excellent safety record and should demonstrate an ability to communicate his or her commitment to safety and passion for the industry. Nominees must also portray a positive image of the industry and profession of truck driving. Congratulations to Randall and Terry on this great honor.
Julie Hanifen Inducted into International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame
Julie Hanifen Hanifen Company
Julie Hanifen, the third-generation owner of Hanifen Company in Des Moines, was one of six leaders from the towing industry worldwide to get inducted into the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame in September.
Hanifen was nominated by members of the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum for her many contributions to the towing and recovery industry, as well as personal contributions to her community. She was recognized at an induction ceremony in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A member of both the Towing and Recovery Professionals of Iowa and Iowa Motor Truck Association, Hanifen Company was founded in 1923 by Julie’s grandfather, James E. Hanifen. The business would later be passed down to Julie’s father James E. Hanifen Jr., who moved the operation to its current location on NW 2nd Avenue in 1959.

Julie Hanifen, owner of Hanifen Company in Des Moines, was inducted into the International Towing & Recovery Professionals Hall of Fame on September 20 at a ceremony held during the Tennessee Tow Show in Chattanooga, Tenn. Hanifen was 1-of-6 individuals honored as part of the Hall of Fame’s 29th induction class.
Iowa’s Trucking Again Shows Support for Special Olympics Iowa Truck Convoy
IMTA members participated in the Iowa Special Olympics Truck Convoy. IMTA was once again a member of the Convoy committee. The Special Olympics Truck Convoy is promoted as “The World’s Largest Truck Convoy” and is an event held in an effort to raise money for the Special Olympics.
Jackie Johnsrud, Johnsrud Transport has served on the committee many years.
The support from Iowa’s trucking industry this year was impressive, with 90 trucks participating in the Convoy. Donations from the Iowa event reached over $40,000, with 100 percent of that going to the Special Olympics. IMTA Chairman Jackie Johnsrud was on the planning committee and thanked IMTA members for their support. A special thanks to Gatr Truck Center for supplying the tractor that pulled IMTA’s show trailer.
Barr-Nunn Acquired by Knight Transportation
Barr-Nunn Transportation, a trucking company founded 32 years ago in Granger, Iowa, announced October 1 that it had been sold to Arizona-based Knight Transportation.
Members in the News Jane Sturgeon, Barr-Nunn’s CEO, said nothing will change for the company’s employees or management team. BarrNunn has about 600 employees, most of whom operate outside of Iowa. Sturgeon will stay on as Barr-Nunn’s CEO for about another year. Knight plans to maintain Barr-Nunn’s name and structure in the Des Moines area, and operate the company as a “semiautonomous business unit.”

IMTA Members Assist With Combat Hunger
Once again members of the Iowa Motor Truck Association stepped up and assisted with Star 102.5’s Combat Hunger Drive. Every year, Star 102.5 supports the Food Bank of Iowa by organizing the Combat Hunger Food Drive. This event provides food products for the less-fortunate in Central Iowa, those who may not have enough to eat. In advance of the drive, donation bins are placed around the Des Moines area in grocery stores, convenience stores, and schools. During the Combat Hunger Drive the trucks, drivers, and volunteers go to these drop-off locations to pick up the donated items and deliver them to the Food Bank of Iowa.
The Freedom Bell had been in Iowa for display at the Iowa State Fair and needed to be moved to DC and Heartland Express was happy to make the trip.
This year we put out requests to our members to help with this worthwhile project and like the trucking industry always does, they responded to Iowa’s needs with generous donations of trucks and drivers.
The bell was picked up in Des Moines and transported to DC. A special thank-you goes out to the employees and drivers of Heartland Express for their willingness to take on this special project.

Membership Update Membership Benefit: Advocacy As I close in on my one year anniversary at the Iowa Motor Truck Association, I’ve started to reflect on what I’ve learned over the last year. The most amazing part Jon Dill to me has IMTA Membership Manager been to see the loyalty of the member base. Seeing members volunteer their time at different events and showing their enthusiasm while doing it, whether it be the Truck Driving Championships or the Management Conference, is something very powerful and effective. After thinking about that, it also made me think, what are some of the reasons that members don’t really get involved? It could be time, it could be distance, it could be a number of reasons. Either way I would encourage every single member to pick out one aspect of the Association and give it a try. It could be volunteering your time, it could be just attending an event, or seminar or it could simply be calling the Association and giving your two cents on a certain regulatory issue or a new idea for a topic of discussion. Regardless, I encourage you all to get involved. Once you get involved I believe you will see exactly what the association does on your behalf! After all that’s why the Association exists. For Almost 75 years the Association has been the voice of the Iowa Trucking Industry.

NEW INCENTIVES AND TAX CREDITS FOR IMTA MEMBERS CONTRIBUTING TO THE IOWA MOTOR CARRIERS FOUNDATION
The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation is pleased to announce that donors can now take advantage of an exciting program that offers a 25 % Iowa tax credit in addition to the normal federal charitable income tax deductions for charitable gifts through ENDOW IOWA. The Endow Iowa Fund model was created by the Iowa Legislature in 2004 to encourage and leverage philanthropy throughout the State of Iowa. Only qualified community foundations have access to the Endow Iowa Tax Credits which is why the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation partnered with the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines to offer this program to IMTA members and potential donors to the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation. “The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation Endow Iowa will be the fundraising vehicle to complement important programs that support the mission of the Iowa Motor Truck Association,” said Foundation Chairman, Murry Fitzer. “IMTA members will have even more incentive to contribute to the Foundation because not only do they get the federal tax deduction but a 25% Iowa tax credit as well which makes it very attractive for folks to consider a donation to the Foundation,” continued Murry.

Each year, 5% of the total of the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation Endow Iowa fund is distributed back to the Foundation which will be used to support programs in the Foundation’s four areas of emphasis; scholarships, research and education, image and IMTA’s headquarters building. “We are extremely excited and pleased with our alignment with Endow Iowa and believe that we now have the tools in place to secure a bright and strong future for the Iowa Motor Truck Association. The top priority in all of our discussions regarding the goals of the Foundation was to secure a mechanism that would compliment the association far into the future,” said Foundation Board member Steve Schuster, Schuster Company. Each year the Iowa Legislature has increased the funding for Endow Iowa and as a result philanthropic giving has continued to increase as well throughout the state of Iowa. Approximately $6 million in Endow Iowa Tax credits will be awarded in 2014.
How it Works
Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation Endow Iowa accepts a variety of gifts; cash, real estate, marketable securities, closely held corporations, personal property, grain, retirement accounts, life insurance,
charitable gift annuities, planned gifts designated in a will or estate plan and charitable trusts. All of these gifts qualify for Endow Iowa Tax Credits. Tax credits of 25% of the gifted amount are limited to $300,000 in tax credits per individual for a gift of $1.2 million or $600,000 in tax credits per couple for a gift of $2.4 million if both are Iowa taxpayers. All eligible gifts will qualify for credits on a first-come/first-serve basis until the yearly amount appropriated by the Iowa legislature is reached. However, if the current available Endow Iowa Tax Credits have been awarded, qualified donors will be eligible for the next year’s Endow Iowa Tax Credits. All qualified donors have five years to use their Endow Iowa Tax Credits. “When we first started looking into this program, we thought it sounded too good to be true. However, after extensive research and discussion with folks that are very familiar with Endow Iowa, we realized that we needed to have an affiliation with this program so that our members could take advantage of all it had to offer,” said Ralph Arthur, Ruan Transportation and member of the Foundation board.
Endow IOWA The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation Legacy
Since the Iowa Motor Carriers foundation was formed in the mid-1980s, IMTA leaders had a vision of broadening the scope of the foundation. However, the first priority was to set up a scholarship program and that has been the cornerstone of the Foundation’s activities Two years ago, after the Foundation took over the ownership of the IMTA building, foundation leaders determined it was a good time to start focusing on the original vision and broaden the scope and footprint of the foundation. The original bylaws stated that the foundation would engage in a number of supporting activities to the trucking industry in addition to the scholarship program and a dedicated team of volunteer leaders came together and started making that vision a reality. “We are excited to be able to offer such a valuable tool to our IMTA members as they consider a possible contribution to the Foundation. Now that we can offer the Endow Iowa tax credit, all members, of all sizes can take advantage of this tax credit and provide some added support to the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation,” said Steve Schuster. And in an effort to show his visible support of the program, he made the first donation of $25,000 into the Endow Iowa program. “I have been actively involved with the restructuring of the Foundation and once we learned about the Endow Iowa program and its many benefits, it was a nobrainer as far as the Foundation moving forward with Endow Iowa. Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation ENDOW IOWA The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation (IMCF) has partnered with the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines to provide contributors with the opportunity to take advantage of tax credits offered through Endow Iowa. The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines is a qualified community foundation that provides access to the Endow Iowa Tax Credits.

Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation Creates New Logo The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation is excited about the new direction the Foundation is taking and in their efforts, they felt it was important that a new logo was created as well. After gathering ideas and feedback from the membership, Foundation leaders worked with professional designers to create a new logo. The Foundation board and a randomly selected group of IMTA members made the final selection and as of November 1, 2014, the foundation will be synonymous with a new logo. The new logo illustrates the four different directions and priorities the foundation will be focusing on. In addition, it was important that the new logo was something completely different than the IMTA since the Foundation is considered a separate entity and they also wanted it to reflect a more updated and modern feel. Foundation leaders are pleased with the results and over the next several months, various activities will be held to help build familiarity to the new logo.
Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation 2014 and Beyond About the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation (IMCF) was formed in 1986 to complement the efforts of the Iowa Motor Truck Association. The mission of the foundation is to engage in charitable, educational and scientific efforts to support Iowa’s trucking industry. In addition, the Foundation was established to develop public relations and community outreach efforts to further enhance the image of the trucking industry. The early leaders of the IMCF believed that the foundation could provide an ongoing mechanism to foster and promote Iowa’s trucking industry and today, that vision continues to be the driving force in widening the scope of the Foundation’s activities and priorities.

The trucking industry always has and always will have an image problem, which is even more reason that a consistent, ongoing and pro-active image program is needed. The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation will invest in an ongoing image campaign favorable to the trucking industry. Through a broad based, multi-dimensional and multi-faceted program, Iowans will constantly and consistently be reminded of the importance of trucking. A constant and consistent message is needed if opinion and perceptions are going to be changed. Isn’t it time we start implementing an “offensive model of action” versus a “defensive model of action”? An image program can and will be impactful in…. ~ attracting potential employees to the industry - yes, we need to develop a program targeted at elementary students all the way up to college in an effort to create some interest and pride in obtaining a job in the trucking industry! ~ gaining support and understanding from regulators and legislators – yes, an image program can and will impact the thinking of these decision makers. Too often, regulators and legislators really don’t understand our industry so it is easy for them to make laws and rules that have a detrimental impact on the industry. ~driving public policy – yes, an image program can and will enhance our ability as an industry to drive public policy that would favor the industry and our efforts to serve the people of Iowa and the nation. ~ creating safer highways and roadways – yes, an image program is needed to help quiet the fears of the general motoring public and to educate drivers of all ages on sharing the road with trucks and the dangers of distracted driving.

Preservation and Maintenance of IMTA Headquarters Building
Iowa’s trucking industry made a bold and positive statement in 1997 when it constructed its headquarters building at the foot of the Iowa State Capitol. Today, the IMTA headquarters is located in one of the most enviable and prime locations in the Capitol city. The IMTA headquarters building is a testament to the strength and the confidence of Iowa’s trucking industry. This 10,000 square building has been a long time hub of activity by the association, its members, legislators, regulators and others city and state leaders because of its proximity to the State Capitol. Foundation leaders are committed to continual investment and revitalization in its headquarters building because it is a symbol of pride and unity for Iowa’s trucking industry and a poignant reminder of the leadership role that trucking will continue to play in the state of Iowa.

The Scholarship program is the cornerstone of the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation. Investing in the future leaders of the state through a strong scholarship program was the impetus for creating the Foundation in 1986. Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation Annual Auction Generous IMTA members once again made the Foundation Auction a tremendous success. The annual fundraising event is held in conjunction with the Tuesday evening welcome reception at the Management Conference. This year the event was held at the home of Dyan and John Smith and auctioneer Matt McWhirter did an excellent job working the crowd. The twelve, identically wrapped packages contained an array of different prizes but bidders didn’t know what prize they had purchased until the packages were unwrapped. Once again, the competitive nature of truckers came through and the bidding wars prevailed. At the end of the night, 12 lucky winners left with prizes such as concert tickets, weekend getaways and other prizes, and more importantly, the Foundation netted almost $48,000 in new contributions.

2014 Management Conference - Another Success! A record number of folks signed on for the 2014 IMTA Management Conference with over 400 registrants. A number that continued to grow right up until the day before the event was scheduled to start. Organizers contribute a number of factors for the tremendous support but committee members deserve much of the credit for putting an outstanding program of speakers, seminars and social activities that attracted IMTA members to the event. “Each year, we spend a lot of time reviewing the evaluations and reaching out to IMTA members to get a feel for what the top issues and priorities are. With that data, we develop breakout sessions and speakers that appeal to a large majority of the members,” said Bill Roth, 2014 Conference Chairman. As always, the goal is to make the event as valuable as it possibly can be to as many people as possible, both carriers and vendors as well as doing everything in a short amount of time.

“We recognize that nobody has the time or the interest in coming to a multi-day event, so we cram as much as we possibly can into a short amount of time. But the schedule continues to get high marks from the attendees and repeatedly we hear positive feedback about keeping this conference at about a day and half,” said Ralph Arthur, 2014 IMTA Chairman of the Board. Securing quality speakers covering timely and interesting topics is always a key priority. This year the focus was on the driver’s shortage and retention issue as well as an emphasis on the IMTA benchmarking program. There is always a session that focuses on the economy and once again all three breakout sessions were standing room only.
John and Dyan Smith opened their home up for the Tuesday evening event, which was an extraordinary experience.
“I always want every single attendee to leave with at least one new idea or thought that they can instantly apply to their operation; that is the only way that this conference offers value to the participants. There is a tremendous amount of competition out there for the time of the members and this simply has to be an event that they want to attend,” said IMTA President Brenda Neville. In addition to the educational sessions, organizers and IMTA leaders have long found value in providing networking and socializing opportunities as well as taking time to recognize and highlight folks through the awards program. The traditional golf outing and opening receptions were once again well attended. Over 140 people played golf and over 300 people attended the welcome reception at the home of John and Dyan Smith. The largest attended meal function of the conference was the Wednesday awards luncheon with over 400 people in the crowd.

“Like our diverse membership, we always try to make the management conference appeal to a diverse group of people too. We have to have something for everyone from the drivers, to the spouses to the CEOs and that is not as easy as it seems. A special thanks to the committee members, all the folks that attended, the sponsors and IMTA officers for making the 2014 conference such a tremendous success. Next year, the management conference will be back in Des Moines on Tuesday, September 22nd and Wednesday, September 23rd at the downtown Marriott hotel.

Rock Stars of IMTA
One of the main attractions of the IMTA conference was the rock star environment that prevailed at the annual awards luncheon. A classic rock bank provided a mini-concert prior to the event and the 2014 Leadership class kicked off the “ROCK STAR” awards ceremony complete with sunglasses and inflatable guitars. A few of the leadership class participants even showed off some of their dancing moves before the ceremonies officially started. All of the 2014 award winners are considered the official rock stars of Iowa’s trucking industry. As Ralph Arthur shared when he opened the awards ceremony, “When you look up the word Rock Star in the dictionary there are a number of definitions but the first one is “A person who is renowned or revered in his or her field of accomplishment. That pretty much sums up the people that we will be recognizing at this awards luncheon.” Over 400 people were in attendance as IMTA’s very own rock stars were honored and recognized.

2014 Conference Images Verne Simpson Memorial Golf Outing
The weather and the course could not have been any more phenomenal than it was for the 2014 Verne Simpson Memorial Golf Outing at the premier Cedar Rapids Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This annual tradition brought together over 140 IMTA members and guests for a fun-filled day out on the links. Congratulations to the 2014 championship team of Don and Dale Decker from Decker Truck Line and Darv and Mark Habben from Crossroads Trailer Sales & Service. A special thank you to Truck Country of Iowa for being the official host and sponsor of the golf outing. This event is made possible due to their support and the time spent organizing the details that go into a successful golf outing.
