Chairman’s Message Jackie Johnsrud, Johnsrud Transport As you all know by now, my top priority as the IMTA Chairman of the Board is to focus on the image and perception of the trucking industry. I am Jackie Johnsrud very proud to IMTA Chairman of the Board be a part of the trucking industry and I believe we all have a responsibility to tell the positive story that centers on trucking. The service we provide is vitally important to everyone and far too often our value is understated or more often, completely forgotten. It is up to us to remind people about the many positive aspects of the trucking industry. I urge you to take this responsibility seriously and help us in

our efforts to promote Iowa’s trucking industry. How many people in your company are serving as a positive representative to the industry? Do your employees appreciate and understand the value of trucking? I think one of the easiest things you can do is to arm everyone at your company with some of the important facts about Iowa’s trucking industry. In doing so, not only are you giving them the tools to be good advocates for the industry, but you are also instilling some tremendous pride in them as well.

Did you know?

*Iowa’s trucking industry provides almost 99,000 jobs in the state of Iowa. To put that another way, one out of every 13 people in this state gets a paycheck from the trucking industry. *Total trucking industry wages paid in Iowa exceed $4.5 billion

*Over 65% of all Iowa communities are served exclusively by TRUCKS, Iowans depend on trucks in a very big way. *Trucks transport 75% of total manufactured tonnage in the state of Iowa…which is 125 million tons per year or approximately 342,000 tons per day! *The trucking industry is committed to safety and the statistics prove that. In Iowa, the number of truck-involved fatalities decreased by 32% from 2008 to 2012. *Trucking pays its fair share too, Trucks represent only 12% of the vehicle miles traveled in Iowa, but we pay almost 49% of total highway user fees and taxes in Iowa. Those are just a few of the impressive statistics that tell a very powerful story about trucking. Please share this information with everyone in your

office and encourage them to share this information with anyone they meet. Given the number of people who are employed by the trucking industry, we have legions of people out there who can help us in our efforts to portray the industry in a positive manner. One of the greatest experiences I have had as your Chairman of the Board is the opportunity to promote the trucking industry to various groups, including regulators and elected leaders. It has

been very rewarding to have discussions with folks and see their perceptions change as a result of our conversation. I am confident you will have the same experiences, so review the statistics provided and make it a goal to share that information with people over the next week. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the reception you receive and the genuine interest there is in regard to trucking. It is our responsibility to promote this industry and if we all do it in a manner that truly exemplifies our

love and respect for the industry, I am certain we can make a lasting difference on the overall perception of trucking. I continue to enjoy my role as the IMTA Chairman of the Board and I personally invite you to attend the upcoming Management Conference in September. I promise you it will be time well spent, and I hope to see you there.

President’s Message

Brenda Neville, Iowa Motor Truck Association As you page through this magazine, you will see that we have had a number of important events. These events serve as valuable opportunities for IMTA Brenda Neville members to join together and IMTA President & CEO not only support IMTA, but also provide a forum for members to network and get better acquainted. Member involvement and activities are at the core of what an association is all about. The ability of IMTA to create events that foster dialogue and involvement between competitors and colleagues is the one unique benefit a trade association can offer. Are you taking advantage of this benefit? It is never lost on us, how valuable your time is and every consideration is given to that basic fundamental principle when we create our schedule of events and activities. Gone are the days where an association event or an annual conference would extend for 3 or 4 days often times over a weekend. Typically folks that are running a business are also leaders within their communities and time quickly becomes a priceless commodity. We recognize that and try to always make good use of your time. Family obligations outside of work will continue to be a priority as well so

we are constantly working on ways to complement that delicate balance and still offer opportunities that promote networking with others in the industry while preserving family life too. Many of our members continue to view “networking with colleagues” as one of the most important benefits of their membership so with the help of our volunteer leaders, we continue to work on the 2016 schedule of events and activities with all these important factors in mind. Please don’t hesitate to share any ideas or suggestions with us as to how to design and tailor events for the members. With that in mind, we are also continually evaluating our communications efforts with the members as well. We view this as a critically important piece of the membership puzzle and with technology changing at a dizzying pace; our goal is to always be as up to date as we possibly can with communication technology and using it to our advantage. However, having said all of that, I don’t think we have achieved that over the last couple of years. Our website was tired and ineffective in serving the members. Our electronic communications, while adequate, have slipped to the “subpar” category and while we continue to achieve some great results with our social media platforms, we want to do so much more in this area. For quite some time, we have been discussing these issues internally and recognized that something had to change. Through the dedication of the IMTA staff as well as some of our members, we have developed a strategic communications plan

Janelle Stevens named Director of Communications, Education & Events for the Iowa Motor Truck Association.

Janelle Stevens IMTA Director of Communications, Education & Events

As of June 1st, Janelle took over the communication responsibilities for the association. Janelle joined the IMTA staff in 2011 after working for the Iowa Cubs organization for over 7 years. Janelle received a degree in Sports Management from Iowa State University. Janelle has previously served as the education and events manager for IMTA and was responsible for setting up all of IMTA’s educational programs and major events such as the annual management conference and truck driving championships.

that will be a priority over the next several months as we make some noticeable improvements and changes to our overall communications effort. In addition, the most important piece of this plan going forward includes our new Director of Communications, Janelle Stevens. Janelle has been with the Iowa Motor Truck Association now for over 4 years and brings tremendous enthusiasm, expertise and creativity to the position. As the manager of education and events, Janelle was involved in some of the communications relative to these activities but like us, had higher expectations for our overall communications activities. As of June 1st, she added communications to her job title and enthusiastically developed a plan of action to upgrade and overhaul our communications efforts. Obviously, we won’t see results overnight but I promise you that some of the new ideas and concepts that are being rolled out will be valued and appreciated by all the members. Please join me in congratulating Janelle on this big promotion and don’t hesitate to share your ideas or suggestions with her as we strive to continually serve the membership and give you the kind of return on their investment that you expect from the Iowa Motor Truck Association. As always, your ongoing support is appreciated and we hope to see you at some of our upcoming events in August and September.

Janelle brings great vision and creativity to the position and is excited to be a part of the communications activities for IMTA. “We couldn’t be happier to have Janelle in this position. She brings a lot of good things to the table and I am confident that we will all benefit from her involvement with our communications,” said IMTA President Brenda Neville. “Our members demand and expect us to be communicating with them on a regular basis in a way that gives them valuable and reliable information. With today’s technology, there is an unlimited number of ways we can be communicating with our members so we hope to continue to look at different ways to reach the variety of segments within our membership,” said Janelle.

Members in the News Wooster Named Carrier Transicold Parts Manager of the Year MHC Buys Kenworth of Mid-Iowa

Keizer Refrigeration’s Mike Wooster was recently awarded the Parts Manager of the Year for the complete Carrier Transicold dealer network.

The addition of the five dealerships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Des Moines, Iowa; Lincoln, Neb.; Omaha, Neb.; and Rock Island, Ill., gives MHC a footprint that spans 16 states. In total, MHC now has more than 100 locations overall to support its customer base, including 66 heavy- and medium-duty truck dealerships and 35 leasing locations.

Wooster, who was nominated for the award by company president Shane Keizer, represented Keizer Refrigeration of Sioux City, Iowa, and Sioux Falls-based Mike Wooster Transport Refrigeration of Keizer Refrigeration South Dakota at the recent Carrier Transicold National Dealer Meeting in San Diego. It was at this event that Wooster was recognized for exceptional performance and support of both his dealership and the Carrier Transicold brand.

Murphy-Hoffman Company (MHC) bought the ownership rights to Kenworth Mid-Iowa and officially acquired its five truck dealerships on June 2 from Rod French, who announced his retirement days prior.

MHC originated from Ozark Kenworth, which was founded in Springfield, Mo., in January 1975. The company is currently headquartered in Leawood, Kansas. The acquisition brought an end to the career of Rod French, who was highly revered within Iowa’s trucking industry since founding his first dealership in 1972. A long-time supporter of the IMTA, French believes he has left the company he built and all 200 his former employees in good hands with the leadership group of MHC.

J. Pettiecord Finalist for Equipment World Contractor of the Year

An employee at Keizer Refrigeration and Mid-States Utility Trailer Sales since 2001, Wooster has been the parts manager since 2007. His wife, Melissa, and their children, Paige; Ava; and Brynnan; reside in Mapleton, Iowa. Selection criteria included sales performance; customer satisfaction and training; and sales/marketing activities. The national recognition goes to the top performing manager of aftermarket components from the Carrier Transicold dealer network.

J. Pettiecord was recently honored by Equipment World as 1-of-12 finalists for the magazine’s annual Contractor of the Year program.

The awards presentation was held in Las Vegas back in March with all finalists being profiled in the May issue of Equipment World. While the Des Moines, Iowa-based company did not walk away with the overall prize --- Genesee Construction out of Dansville, N.Y. received top honors --- J. Pettiecord was recognized with a Safety Award for their many achievements. Owner Jeff Pettiecord and executive vice president Nick Wylie were both in attendance at the Contractor of the Year Banquet to accept the safety award.

Central Trailer Announces Changes with Addition of New Trailer Line

Central Trailer Service announced in April that it has become a full line dealer for Vanguard dry van trailers, as well as CIMC refrigerated trailers, while promoting Bradley Bailey to sell them. This new relationship immediately made Vanguard and CIMC trailers available to the Iowa market, allowing Central Trailer to put a high quality product on the road for carriers that will complement its existing lines of Merritt hoppers, Strick, Wilson flatbeds, Transcraft, Benson and Morgan van bodies. “This is a great addition to the Iowa market and we are confident that the Vanguard name will be a staple in Iowa transportation in the years to come” said Mike Bagg, president of Central Trailer Service. Bailey, who has been with the company for more than 10 years and has worked in all facets of Central Trailer, will be the lead sales representative for trailers. Bailey began in the service department in 2004 before moving to the parts department in 2005. He has been a key contributor to the Altoona, Iowa-based company and has been servicing customers both inside and outside of the Des Moines area.

Rod French Makes Donations for Police Body Cameras During Retirement Celebration Kenworth of Mid-Iowa founder Rod French recently made a donation to the police departments of Des Moines and Waukee. Each were made as part of French’s retirement celebration held on May 29 at the dealership’s headquarters in Des Moines.

French presented Des Moines Police Department Chief Dana Wingert with a check for $125,000 to help aid the purchase of 250 body cameras. It was one-fifth the total estimated amount of the $500,000 needed by the DMPD to cover the cost of cameras and data-storing servers. Each camera, which officers will likely wear at the center of their chest, costs $1,000. The contribution French made to the Waukee Police Department totaled $14,000, which is enough to equip its entire force of officers with 18 cameras. The Waukee City Council had previously budgeted for the purchase of the cameras, and Waukee Mayor William Peard said the generosity of French will now allow that money to go towards other public safety needs for the city.

Special Olympics Iowa for many years, Johnsrud Transport was recognized for its many contributions prior to the Opening Ceremonies of the 2015 Summer Games. Jackie Johnsrud serves on the Convoy Planning Committee and helps recruit trucking companies to participate in the annual event that is a partnership between the trucking industry and Iowa law enforcement.

Capital City Fruit Hosts Hillary Clinton IMTA member Capital City Fruit’s had a rare opportunity to host former U.S. Secretary of State and 2016 presidential candidate hopeful Hillary Clinton when she was in Iowa recently.

An individual stopped and asked if a tourist group could go through the business the next week. Brendan Comito, chief operating officer of Capital City Fruit, said no because of federal regulations that could result in food code violations and anti-terrorist concerns. Later in the day, though, he got a call that shed more light on the “tour” request and when it was all said and done, Hillary Clinton was going to be making a speech there. Hillary’s visit included a warehouse tour, handshakes with employees and a small business roundtable with Comito and four other randomly chosen local companies. Topics such as taxes, the rising costs of healthcare reform, immigration and job vacancies due to a labor talent shortage were all part of the one-hour roundtable. The driver shortage was discussed extensively. Comito noted, though, that Clinton’s attention remained squarely on the businesses asked to participate in the roundtable and that the former first lady heard the messages that were being voiced to her. “We’ll bring anybody in who will hear about our business and the industry challenges we’re facing,” Comito said about the unique experience to meet Hillary Clinton.

Government Regulated Trailer Efficiency Efficiency Goals Set for Tractors, Engines & Trailers The federal government has issued its long-awaited proposal to further tighten greenhouse-gas emissions from heavy and medium-duty trucks. The government has also for the first time moved toward regulating trailer efficiency.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a joint proposal on June 19th that would phase in increasingly stringent standards for new trucks in 2021, 2024 and 2027. The proposal calls for incremental improvements in fuel economy. The new rule also outlined standards on carbon dioxide, GHGs and separate standards for engines during the same time period. In addition, initial trailer regulations would kick in January 2018 and continue to tighten up.

For trailer manufacturers, the government listed aerodynamic devices, automatic tire inflation systems and weight reduction as suggested strategies to boost fuel economy. The agencies also pointed to low-rolling resistance tires as an option to truck and trailer compliance. Advanced technologies, such as hybrids and waste-heat recovery systems, are also being considered as a pathway to compliance. However, waste-heat recovery systems are still a long ways off according to industry experts. Overall the proposal largely calls for more of the same technologies offered now and would retain EPA’s program that allows credits to be averaged, banked or traded. Source: Transport Topics

Decker Truck Line Hosts Rubio Event

Presidential candidate Marco Rubio made a stop in Fort Dodge during a recent campaign trip and held a support rally at Decker Truck Don Decker, Brenda Neville, Marco Rubio and Dale Decker Line. Don and Dale Decker hosted the event in an effort to introduce Fort Dodge residents to the Presidential hopeful. Senator Jack Whitver (R-Ankeny) serves as Rubio’s Iowa campaign chairman and was grateful for the hospitality extended by Decker Truck Line. “Marco Rubio is the one candidate that is the voice of business in this presidential race and who better than a trucking company for a platform to talk about key business issues and concerns. Trucking is critically important to everyone and Marco Rubio understands the importance of creating an environment that supports business and wants to eliminate the barriers that hamper business on a daily basis,” said Jack. Over 100 people were in attendance for the rally that was held in the Decker shop with an American flag draped stage between two new Decker Trucks. Senator Rubio addressed the audience then opened it up for questions. He also took the time to shake hands and take photos despite fighting the flu. “I am extremely grateful to the Decker family for hosting this event and appreciate the hard work, commitment and dedication demonstrated by the entire trucking industry to deliver the goods and products we all depend upon. We all owe the trucking industry a great deal of gratitude and appreciation,” said Rubio in his opening comments.

gaining support by the trucking industry. The concept is suggesting a program that would give motor carriers extra credit for instituting safety measures ahead of regulatory mandates. The FMCSA has suggested that carriers who install safety technologies or implement safety programs be rewarded with some sort of adjustment to their Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scores. Despite supporting the “concept”, ATA has also urged the agency to address several other important issues outside of this proposal that should take precedence including some badly needed improvements to CSA. The National Transportation Safety Board however does have some concerns and made comments on what they believe the incentive should be. The NTSB is concerned that this approach would limit the FMCSA in its ability to oversee the safety of the carriers and usefulness of the scores in evaluating the benefits of the programs and technology. Congressman Blum Tours Cedar Rapids Truck Center

Congressman Blum and George Grask

Congressman Rod Blum spent time at Cedar Rapids Truck Center, getting a firsthand look at the operation and discussing issues of importance with President George Grask and the staff at the Peterbilt dealership.

Grask had invited to Blum to the facility located in Cedar Rapids after working closely with Blum on favorable legislation specific to the excise tax. Blum, a freshman Republican legislator from Dubuque, earned a seat in the 2015 Congress after handily beating Pat Murphy, a former Speaker of the Iowa House. Since heading to DC, Blum, a successful business owner, has been a staunch supporter of pro-business legislation and a formidable advocate for anything relative to creating a better business environment. “I think it is extremely beneficial to get lawmakers into the business environment and allow them the opportunity to get an up close and personal look at what we do on a day to day basis. Congressman Blum is very interested in learning more about the trucking industry and continues to be a tremendous supporter, not only to the industry but to business in general. We need more of his common sense approach in Congress,” said Grask, a longtime member of the Iowa Motor Truck Association as well as a longtime officer with the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association representing the truck dealers.

Finance Update Outsourcing Advantages Is Outsourcing Right for You?

Our firm has the great opportunity to work with our clients on a variety of projects. There are some obvious ones like tax preparation and financial Dan Schwarz statement McGowen, Hurst, Clark & Smith, PC assistance. However, more and more we are being asked to work directly and frequently in assisting the client’s accounting personnel or filling the role of a CFO, either in the short term or permanently on a part time basis. Companies are always fighting the personnel battle - recruiting, hiring and retaining good, quality personnel. This is the case across all industries, whether it is the competition for top level accounting personnel, like our firm deals with, or the need of a transportation company for key people at all levels. We are all aware of the driver issue the industry faces. While this area is of critical importance to a company’s success, the issue itself is nothing new, and well managed fleets are prepared to deal with it. One area that is often more challenging to an organization is a change in the accounting and finance area, particularly CFOs and controllers. We typically see this occur under a couple of situations – 1) a CFO or controller unexpectedly departs, leaving a void in the management team or 2) growth of a company creates a need for a higher level of accounting and finance skill set, but not on a full time basis.

Often, companies turn to firms like ours to fill this need by outsourcing the job duties to us. This option eliminates several of the ongoing challenges in hiring and retaining a CFO with one simple decision.

Outsourcing offers several advantages -

Cost efficiency - Companies typically find the overall cost to be lower than hiring and retaining an employee.

Outside perspective – Often times, companies gain access to a wider range of experience by using those who work in the industry for multiple companies.

A deeper bench – We typically have multiple people from our firm involved to support the CFO/ controller function. This provides more depth and helps mitigate reliance on one person.

Use as needed – Several of our engagements have been with companies that have a need for CFO level skills but only on an intermittent basis.

Synergies – Having an accounting firm act as a CFO can provide certain synergies and cost savings when combined with other typical needs such as annual tax preparation or audits.

Freedom – Management has additional time available as the third party CFO becomes responsible for meeting financial deadlines.

Once the decision is made to outsource, a few additional steps need to be taken for it to be successful. First, identify sources that can provide what your

company needs. There are a variety of consultants that offer CFO type experience but may lack experience with the transportation industry. Industry experience is key. Without industry experience the outsourcing provider is going to be limited in what it can provide to your company’s management team. Also, you need to ensure the person and/ or company is a good cultural fit. The outsourcing company’s people have to be able to work with your personnel for it to be effective. A clash of cultures and approaches does no one good. Finally, be clear about expectations. There are several areas to discuss and decide upon before services begin. Will you require a physical presence on site, if so how often? What level of access to computer software is needed? What are the duties and responsibilities? What level of decision making authority are you comfortable with? Once answers to these questions are determined, it is typically in the best interest of both parties to sign an engagement letter that details duties, level of authority, fees and payment requirements and termination options. A well thought-out and agreed upon agreement is the first step to a successful relationship. For many companies, outsourcing their CFO duties is a great option but perhaps not one seriously considered in the past. There are many challenges in today’s business environment of finding, hiring and retaining key personnel. Unexpected events only add to the pressure of the situation. Finding an outsourcing company with the necessary experience and depth can help relieve many, if not all, of these challenges and bring additional expertise to your organization. Could now be the time for your company to consider this option?

Marketing Update

IMTA, J.J. Keller Establish New Online Training Resource for Members

Phillip Nicolino IMTA Marketing Manager

Online training is becoming common practice in the trucking industry and, in recently polling the IMTA membership to gauge the climate for it, there is a strong acceptance if adequately structured and priced.

The survey results also bared a 97% response rate that any training the association created or promoted through a partnership would be supported. The combination of these factors effectively led the IMTA into a plan of action to address this growing need with a trusted ally. As of August, IMTA members and approved non-members were provided access to a joint online training resource the association developed in partnership with J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc. It features a library of more than 300 training courses with recordkeeping and reporting capabilities that are essential to maintaining a suitable company training program.

What is Training On Demand?

The important thing to recognize about the IMTA’s newly formed training program with J.J. Keller is that it’s entirely “On Demand,” meaning your employees complete it on their time. No longer do you need to coordinate a date and time that an entire group of drivers can be present. Our Training On Demand system can be accessed at anytime from anywhere with an Internet connection (even by tablet device). And because the sessions are self-paced, all training videos can be stopped and resumed in the exact spot they were paused.

How Extensive is the Curriculum? The training courses that will be at your disposal are one of the most in-depth curriculums you’ll currently find within the industry. Everything from driver training and

regulatory compliance to hazmat protocols and OSHA requirements are available. Construction and human resources are thoroughly covered as well.

• Construction • Driver • DOT Regulations • Hazcom/GHS • Hazmat • Hazwoper • Human Resources & Legal Compliance • Lab Safety • Oil & Gas • Workplace Safety Most of the training sessions within these categories range from 15 minutes to 60 minutes. Given the ability to stop and restart without having to go back to the beginning, multiple blocks of time can be used to finish the courses if necessary.

What Oversight Would Administrators Have?

The controls and training requisites are robust. Every course an employee takes can be monitored and tracked to ensure successful completion. In-session and postsession quizzes are used to verify critical information is being absorbed and retained with certificates produced at the conclusion. Adding and editing employee information is effortless, and you can even keep track of live, classroom-based training programs employees take outside the system. An additional bonus is the ability to create and manage a customized series of courses for individual employees or groups of employees such as new hires or drivers. This enables you to implement a focused training effort on topics that are fundamental to your success or perhaps even concerning due recent changes in safety initiatives or the regulatory climate.

aggressive you want to be with training your employees. One is a point-based model in which you buy training points to utilize as a company. The other is a subscription plan that provides you unlimited access to the courses for an annual fee. When it comes to the point-based system, there are tiers in place to give price breaks to companies that want or need to purchase a higher volume of credits. So, the more points you buy, the lower the price per point you’ll pay (see examples below): Example 1 --- Company A buys 200 points @ $1.00 per point for a total cost of $200 Example 2 --- Company B buys 2,000 points @ $0.80 per point for a total cost of $1,600 Example 3 --- Company C buys 20,000 points @ $0.50 per point for a total cost of $10,000 It is important to break down the overall cost by the number of employees that will be trained throughout the year. In most cases, the total cost per employee will not exceed $100 if conducting quarterly training at a minimum. All points are good for one year from the date of purchase and most training sessions require 25 points. Electing for the subscription plan is only an option by contacting the IMTA office to gain a quote that will be based upon your specific needs. More details will be released in the months to come about our online training resource. But take this opportunity now to visit www.jjkellertraining.com/IMTA and register an account for immediate use. Give me a call or send an e-mail if you have any questions or needs about this new program the IMTA is confident this will thoroughly support its members.

What is the Price Tag?

There are two options depending upon how large a company you oversee or how

Phillip Nicolino serves as IMTA’s Marketing Manager and in that capacity, he is responsible for working with all of IMTA’s non-dues revenue programs. When IMTA looks at a product or service to offer to the membership, a carrier committee is appointed to help with the process. This group of carriers play an instrumental role in providing insight, feedback and expertise in determining if the product or service should become a part of IMTA’s platform of benefits. Getting that “seal of approval” from the carriers, potential customers, is essential in ensuring that IMTA is truly meeting the needs of its members.

Call on Washington IMTA Members Head to DC

A group of IMTA leaders headed to Washington to participate in the annual advocacy trip directed at DC lawmakers. The group comprised of carriers and allied members had face to face meetings with all members of Iowa’s congressional delegation. The group had meetings and discussions with Congressmen Blum, King, Loebsack and Young as well as with Senators Grassley and Ernst. The main message to lawmakers was to take care of highway funding on a federal level as well as continued plea for regulatory reform with a specific focus on hours of service.

The impact the Call on Washington efforts have on our lobbying activities here in DC is priceless.

“Since we had just voted for a gas tax in Iowa, our message was simple, do the same in DC. We reminded everyone that roads and bridges are essential not only our industry but the economy in general and we simply cannot keep kicking the can down the road on this,” said IMTA Chairman of the Board Jackie Johnsrud. In addition to meeting with lawmakers, the group also spent time with the American Trucking Association staff and received briefings in several key areas. ATA Vice President of Government Relations, Christopher Spear joined the Iowa group on some of their calls and was once again impressed with the number of IMTA members that continue to participate on the annual Call on Washington trip.

Call on Washington “I know it is a big investment of time and money for members to come out to DC, but the impact the Call on Washington efforts have on our lobbying activities here in DC is priceless. We are grateful to see so many folks from Iowa that participate year after year,” said Christopher Spear.

“I think this is one of the most valuable things we can do as IMTA members. We need to remind our lawmakers in DC that we are engaged and involved in legislative efforts at both the state and national level. I am always happy to see so many IMTA members, both trucking and allied willing to step up and participate,” said Steve Schuster, Schuster Company.

Membership Update Adding Value to Your Membership Our number one goal is to help make your life easier as a member of IMTA. We recognize the many challenges that a typical member Jon Dill faces on a IMTA Membership Manager daily basis. A vast majority of our members not only own the trucking company but actively work in the operation. Some of our members wear many hats in the company from accountant, to safety director, to maintenance manager and even driver from time to time. The demands placed on our your time as a company owner are tremendous and while you are trying to keep the doors open, your ability to stay on top of everything that is changing in the industry is difficult. That is where we come into the picture and we are always looking for additional ways we can help our members. If you don’t walk away from an IMTA event, meeting or educational session with at least ONE GOOD IDEA then we have not done our job. We have the same objective for our communications as well, if you don’t learn something new after reading the Lifeliner or the weekly InfoFlash then we are failing. With that philosophy in mind, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our service to the membership and we are pleased to announce that we are launching a new service that will add even more value to your membership. Our new service is a regular schedule of informative and educational webinars for the membership. We held our first “test” webinar in July and we had 67 registered participants. Shirley McGuire, FMCSA was the

featured guest and the 60 minute session was a big success. Over 90% of the participants gave the webinar a rating of a 4 or 5 with 5 being the highest grade you can give the session. Most importantly, there is no charge to members to participate in the webinar and no limit to the number of people we can include on the webinar. If you have access to a computer and the internet, you have access to these valuable webinars. Given the success of the first “test” webinar, we will continue to offer this valuable member service in the future. Below is a list of the upcoming webinars. All we ask is that you register in advance and registration is a very easy process as well. In today’s constantly changing environment, we intend to use these webinars as a way to keep you informed and on top of the changes. Even more important, we will offer you the assistance and guidance to deal with these changes. Knowing how to deal with these changes is the greatest value in our opinion and we will help you through the process of implementing these changes in your operation. We believe the webinar programs we have created will be one of the most beneficial services we can offer our membership. Time is everyone’s most valued asset and while we will continue to offer educational sessions from time to time, we have discovered that people have a limited amount of time to drive to Des Moines for a seminar so the alternative is to bring the information to you via a webinar. Given the success of our first webinar, we are excited to continue to bring you the most up to date information on the issues that are keeping you up at night. Look over the list below and share this information with everyone in your office. Hop on the next webinar and I promise you will get something out of it. The webinars are also very interactive so

you can ask questions as well and really tailor the webinar to fit your unique and specific needs. I would also encourage you to send us ideas on topics that you would like to see covered in a future webinar. I hope that you take advantage of this great NEW service. This is an opportunity for you to really get some added value to your membership and I know you will be very pleased with the quality of information that is provided on these webinars. Your membership in IMTA is extremely important and my personal commitment to every member is that we do everything we can to make your life and job easier. Your membership in the association is also tremendously appreciated so THANK YOU for helping making IMTA such a great organization!

Safety Update

Let Iowa Truck Services Help You With Your Regulatory Issues Several years ago the Iowa Motor Truck Association launched a new arm of IMTA called Iowa Truck Services. The thought behind Iowa Truck Services (ITS) Don Egli, CDS IMTA Director of Safety was that the regulatory environment is getting more and more complex, causing more and more headaches for our members. Proactive carriers had often request that we come to their offices and perform a mock audit, to help them ensure that they were in compliance, so our initial service offerings were mock audits, compliance review follow-ups, and administrative upgrade assistance. When performing a mock audit, we come in to a carrier’s location and review their regulatory processes and files. We check to make sure that they are properly completing driver qualification files, driver logs, maintenance files, etc. We also review their processes, such as hiring, drug and alcohol testing, driver log auditing, maintenance schedules and inspections, how they monitor expirations of documents, etc., and make suggestions for process improvement. Mock audits are a great way to ensure that you are in compliance, should the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) ever come knocking on your door.

We also help carriers after they have been subject to a compliance review. FMCSA often requires a carrier to write a response, or corrective action plan, as a follow-up to a compliance review. Putting into words some of the things that a carrier is doing to correct deficiencies is often not easy for them. Our ITS staff is very familiar with this process. We have completed many of these follow-up plans and have helped many members through this time of stress and concern. That’s why we’re here. Often the results of a FMCSA compliance review are less-than favorable. Sometimes FMCSA finds enough deficiencies that they downgrade a carrier’s rating, or place them out of service. ITS staff are knowledgeable in this area as well. We can help the carrier with putting a corrective action plan into place, monitoring the progress, and then submitting a request for a rating upgrade in accordance with Part 385.17 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. We have been successful in all but one of the submissions for upgrade that we have completed. Over the years we have completed many of these services for carriers, but we continue to look for new ways that we can be of assistance to our members. Along that thought process, ITS is now offering two new services for our members and non-members. These services add just another benefit of IMTA membership. The first new service is CSA Monitoring. We have begun a monthly review of CSA scores and profiles and will be giving customers who utilize this service a monthly update of their CSA scores.

Mock audits are a great way to ensure that you are in compliance

Along with this report will be a summary of trends, such as “are any of your scores going higher?” A part of that summary will be our idea of what is raising your score(s). This service has been met with great anticipation from some of our members, and we hope to expand the number of users in the near future. The second new service is a DataQ service. How many times has one of your drivers gone through a roadside inspection, received a violation, and you question the legitimacy of that violation? FMCSA has a process in place to appeal (or “DataQ”) that violation. For some carriers this process is confusing, stressful, and almost not worth the time. Plus, most carriers do not use the DataQ process enough to be familiar with it. This is what we do day-in and day-out, so we are familiar with the process. The most successful DataQ’s are those that are submitted properly and have good supporting documentation to support your argument.

Why not let ITS complete that process for you? We are highly

experienced with the DataQ process, and have a good success rate in getting violations overturned or reduced. We have relationships with enforcement personnel and FMCSA, which can be used for your advantage. We can file the DataQ for you, include relevant supporting documentation, and use our experience to make the argument. Our main mission is to meet the needs of the trucking companies in the state of Iowa. We would be glad to help you meet your needs by assisting you with any of these services. For more information, call our office at 515-244-5193.

Don Egli has over 25 years experience in the trucking industry. He has served as IMTA’s Director of Safety and Compliance for the past 9 years. Don started in the industry as a driver and worked his way through various management positions related to safety. He proudly holds the CDS (Certified Director of Safety) certification and in addition to serving IMTA’s membership by assisting with safety, regulatory and compliance oversight, he also sits on several state and national boards dedicated to safety. www.IowaMotorTruck.com

KEYNOTE ADDRESS 2015 IOWA TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jackie Johnsrud IMTA Chairman of the Board

IMTA Chairman of the Board Jackie Johnsrud gave the keynote address at the opening breakfast of the 2015 Iowa Truck Driving Championships. The speech got the attention of everyone in the audience and was extremely well received. On the suggestion of many in the audience - we thought we would share with entire members.

Good Morning, It is my honor to be here with you today and to also serve as your IMTA Chairman of the Board. I want to personally thank you for participating in this great event and extend my thanks to the staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts in putting on another great truck driving championship. Those of you that know me know two things for sure; that I love trucking AND that I love the Truck Driving Championships I have been around the trucking industry my entire life and you don’t stay in this business unless you love it and have a passion for it. Trucking is just too difficult and too demanding, unless you are all in. The trucking industry has some of the most dedicated, courageous and talented folks I have ever met and I have the utmost of respect for the “profession” of driving and for the dedication and sacrifices you make every day to move America. AND you make it look so easy

that is displayed by every participant. I see the desire to make your family and your company proud of you and I think I can speak for both, we ARE very proud of you! You are already Champions to us. I hope that you have enjoyed yourself so far and I want you to know what a special group of professional drivers you are. Here are some important facts I want to share with you. There are approximately 4 million drivers in the US. If we approximate 1 TDC per state and let’s say 100 folks per state compete in their state TDC, that comes to 5,000 or so that compete nationwide. So think of it this way, of those 4 million drivers, only 5,000 drivers are in the same category that you are today. That’s .125 percent of total drivers in America. You are an elite group of professional drivers and you should be very proud of your accomplishments. While today is important, the interactions you have every day on the road are of even greater importance. Those are life and death decisions. And those daily decisions and choices are what brought you here today. You have earned the right to compete and I also commend you for having the courage to compete. Not everyone can drive a truck nor is everyone willing to put their skills on the line and challenge themselves against their peers. Just being here means that you are a professional and that you take your career seriously. I know many of you are nervous today and that’s ok. You are nervous because you care and you want to do a great job and represent your company well, which is another example of why you are a true professional and true winner already.

As a driver, hard work is just who you are and you don’t dwell on the sacrifices and decisions you are called upon to make on a daily basis, life or death decisions, instead you just do it, you handle it, you get it done. You not only do it without fanfare, but you do it amidst a public that is quick to throw daggers at our industry at every opportunity and for that you deserve the utmost respect. So thank you for all you do. I love the Truck Driving Championships because it is a wonderful celebration of the profession of driving and a chance to recognize the best of the best. Every year, I come away inspired and full of admiration for what you do every day. I see the love of driving and the pride you have in the industry. I see the Team spirit, the camradarie and the sportsmanship

IMTA Chairman of the Board Jackie Johnsrud proudly addresses the 2015 TDC participants.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS While the TDC is a competition, at it’s roots it is a CELEBRATION of THE BEST PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS IN THE STATE OF IOWA. YOU ARE THE BEST OF THE BEST. If there was any question in terms of your career achievement, I am here to tell you, YOU HAVE ARRIVED. YOU HAVE MADE IT! You are role models and you are the best spokesmen for our industry. You are the face and voice of trucking. And I want you to start talking. My platform as Chairman of the IMTA has been industry image. We have long suffered a poor image and I think it’s time we all say ENOUGH is ENOUGH. It’s time we take back our industry. It’s time to be proactive and to start telling our story. We have a great story to tell and a great mission. Our message is filled with far more positive than negative. As an industry we have been poor at telling our story and the role we play in the daily lives of all Americans. We are not doomed to a life of misunderstanding and a poor image. We are if we don’t do anything AND if we stay silent. If we don’t do anything, that’s our fault as an industry, NOT the media or the American public. We need to begin to educate the public on what we do and why it’s important. Improving our image can come in the simplest of forms and it’s not as difficult as we like to make it…we just have to start. So what do we do and where do we start? I have a few ideas for starting to improve our image AND I am going to need the help and commitment from everyone in this room. Some ideas cost money, but most don’t. Maybe you have seen the Johnsrud trailer on display outside. We did this as a small step to begin to challenge the publics’ perception of trucking and to showcase the important role the driver plays in America. The trailer is inspired by the American Trucking Associations “Trucking Moves America Forward” campaign. One side of the trailer says... “I keep my schedule - so Americans keep theirs”. The other side says... “I keep moving so America can keep moving”. The rear head says simply, “We Move America Forward”. Simple, but important messages. I would venture to say most of the American public has never given the importance of the industry a thought. The goal of the trailer wrap is to encourage the public to think. travels the US and Canada. It is also my hope that every driver that sees it will also feel proud and realize that each load makes a difference in someone’s life. The lives of those who need the products you are delivering and all the people you encountered in getting your load to its destination. Many people that see the trailer have the same comments and the same questions. “That’s so cool and that’s so true.” Then come the other two questions. Are those really your drivers? Yes they are. And the final question. How much does it cost? My answer is, not as much as you’d think. Then I ask, do you get the message? Oh yes, is usually the response, it’s what you do for us. In addition, we need to be mindful of how we talk about our industry to others and in the media which includes social media like Facebook. We have a way of insulting ourselves and not thinking anything of it! We need to change the tone of our conversation and to always be on the lookout for opportunities to leave folks with a positive impression of the trucking industry. Don’t join in industry bashing, even in the simplest of conversations or conversations with peers. Be part of the solution. Be the force of change and the agent of understanding. Here’s how simple it can be. A few years ago, a friend was complaining about a $10 shipping charge for something she had ordered on line. After she ranted for a bit, I said “trucking’s not free you know” lighthearted, but with a clear message. She looked at me kind of funny. I could tell she had never thought of it that way. She has brought up that conversation many times over the years. And on more than one occasion I have seen a light bulb go off in the folks she is telling the story to. Something so simple and so basic. That in and of itself, is one small step toward understanding.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS We as leaders also need to do a better job of educating you on industry facts. It is the basic facts about our industry that we need to share. We have them, we just need to learn them and then start talking about them. Rather than talk about what we don’t like. Let’s talk about what we do like. We need to always be on the lookout for opportunities to change the tone of discussion about our industry to something positive and to make education our mission. Now let’s talk some money. Jackie and the 2015 Johnsrud Team L-R: Ron Bloom, Bret Smith, Brad Martsching and Robert Meyer Jr.

I think another great example is when about a dozen IMTA leaders went out to Washington DC this past April to talk to our Iowa Congressman and Senators about trucking and how trucking impacts the state. We met with Senators Grassley and Ernst and all four representatives from Iowa. Every lawmaker was given a toy truck, which by the way they all LOVED. Which says to me, there’s fascination with trucks in all of us. We just need to tap into that. While in DC, all of these legislators were given some basic facts, one of which was that 1 in 13 people work in the trucking industry in the state of Iowa. One of our representatives, Congressman Rod Blum who represents Dubuque and the 1st Congressional District was fascinated with the 1 in 13 statistic and brought it up on more than one occasion during the meeting. We also happened to run into him that evening at a DC restaurant and he came over to our table and said “1 in 13, that is so fascinating and so amazing.” I would predict the next time he is asked if trucking is important to Iowa, I am pretty sure he is going to say YES. All because of one simple and effective conversation we took the time to have with him. Furthermore, any decisions that he makes affecting our industry he now knows will have great impact on the state of Iowa.

Let’s say a neighbor complains about the recent fuel tax increase in Iowa. This is the perfect opportunity for you to explain that truckers pay a lot toward the roads that they drive on every day. You can explain that we pay fuel tax - whether we buy fuel in the state or not. You can explain that we pay the state of Iowa based on what we SHOULD have bought and it’s based on the miles driven in the state and the MPG of the fleet. For example, if your company drove 50,000 miles in Iowa in April and the fleet averages 6.50 miles per gallon, then the state of Iowa says, you should have bought 7,692 gallons in Iowa and; if you bought less, you still need to pay the tax on the gallons you shorted us. Car owners don’t have to do that. You could also offer that the roads are one of the tools of our trade and that we drive 12% of the miles in the state, but pay 49% of fuel taxes and user fees. We clearly pay our fair share and more. AND Roads, like trucking aren’t FREE My challenge to you as professionals is to be positive and educational in every conversation you have with your family, your friends, your neighbors, and the public. We as an industry need to be the biggest advocate for ourselves. 1 in 13 people work in the trucking industry in Iowa and at the bare minimum 1 in 13 people should be informed, excited and spreading the message about the importance of trucking. No one knows our story better than we do and it is our obligation and our duty to speak up and to be heard so that we can be understood.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS I am not saying that people need to love us, what I am saying is that at a minimum they need to have a BASIC UNDERSTANDING of what we do and how we impact their daily lives. With understanding we get an informed ear when listening to conversation about our industry. Another way to improve our image is for you to engage and be active in your local communities. If you get the opportunity at your child or grandkids school to talk about the industry, please go and do so. Be an advocate. The IMTA can help and is more than happy to help you. IMTA can give you information that would be interesting and appropriate for your audience. Maybe there is an opportunity to take your truck (with the approval of your employer) to school to let kids see it and touch it and be fascinated by it. If your community has a parade or an event, ask your employer if you can represent the company by participating or by driving your truck in the parade or proudly displaying it at an event. If a child is fascinated with your truck at a truck stop, ask the family if they want a photo of their child in front of your truck.

To change our image we need to all care. We need to believe in ourselves and in our industry and to always conduct ourselves as professionals. We have kicked the can down the road far too long and now is the time to tell our story. If our legislators have at least basic and real facts, they can be better informed in making decisions that affect us. I urge you to become a vocal advocate for our industry starting today. I want you to go out there today and do your best and most importantly ENJOY the competition. I want you to do what you do every day and I want you to do it with pride. I look forward to seeing you later tonight at the banquet and wish you the best. Thank You and Have a Great Day!

In a snowstorm, the media seems to find poorest representative of the industry to talk about the weather’s impact and the condition of the roads. As professionals, don’t be shy, speak up and volunteer to give the interview to the media. It’s an opportunity to promote safety and the industry and we need you - the true professionals to represent us and be the face and voice that the public sees. If you make image your mission you will begin to see opportunities every day where you can Make a Difference And YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. We need to always be prepared to show the best side of our industry. AND THAT BEST SIDE is YOU! The best side of our industry is our people. We are known for all the metal and chrome, and we have plenty of that BUT we need to be known for how the people of the industry make America tick every day. For an industry to have such a far reaching impact and be so intertwined in the daily lives of Americans and to be so misunderstood….. is a shame. One of the BIGGEST impressions we have on the public is HOW WE DRESS. Dressing for success applies in our business too. If a motorist sees a well-dressed driver or driver in a uniform - they see a professional. If you took 10 random people off the street and took them to a truck stop and asked them to pick out the professionals, I would venture to say nearly 100% of them would pick out the well-dressed drivers and NOT the ones with fancy trucks. That’s image. Those of you that are veteran drivers, consider taking a new driver under your wing at your company and teach him what being a professional means. We all need guidance in our career and mentors have a place in our business just as any other business.

Board of Director’s Meeting IMTA Leaders Gather for Board Meeting IMTA leaders gathered for their spring board meeting and discussed a number of topics of interest to the trucking industry. Iowa Speaker of the House, Kraig Paulsen and IMTA lobbyist Dave Scott gave legislative updates with the passage of the gas tax in March being a highlight of the legislative session for IMTA. In addition, Christopher Spears, Vice President of Government Relations for ATA also gave an update via skype to the group. Special guest and speaker, Cedar Rapids Mayor, Ron Corbett told the group about an organization he has formed called “Engage Iowa”. This organization is a Think Tank that will focus on issues of importance to Iowans of all ages. Ron is currently the Mayor of Cedar Rapids but has always maintained close ties to the trucking industry since his days in the Iowa legislature. Over the noon hour, five recipients of the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation scholarship program were presented their scholarship checks. The young students and their families were present and a reception following the awards ceremony allowed all the board members to get better acquainted with the scholarship winners.

The afternoon session was dedicated to roundtable discussions. Board members broke into small groups and discussed a variety of topics ranging from the Federal legislative proposal to allow 33’ twin trailers to driver retention to autonomous trucks. Each board member was assigned to a different group and each group had a different topic to discuss. After the discussion, a spokesperson for each group summarized their discussion to the entire board which fostered additional discussion. “Interaction between the board members is important and we are happy to be implementing roundtable discussions into our board format. Not only does this give board members a great opportunity to get more familiar with one another but it also forces us as IMTA leaders to sit down and discuss an array of topics that are impacting our industry,” said IMTA Chairman of the Board Jackie Johnsrud. The IMTA Board of Directors meet twice a year in addition to their annual meeting that is held in conjunction with the IMTA Management Conference in September.

IMCF Scholarships

Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation Awards 2015 Scholarships Since 1989, the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation has been proudly investing in Iowa students. Since that first awards ceremony, Iowa’s trucking industry has impacted over 200 students with almost $160,000 in scholarship dollars. The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation was formed in 1986 by long-time supporter Vern Simpson with Mid-Seven Transportation. Vern’s dream was to establish a scholarship program that would assist students pursuing educational opportunities beyond high school. Vern started to pursue that dream with fundraising as the first step. Through the generous contributions by Cummins and Caterpillar, the scholarship program became a reality. The first scholarships were established for diesel mechanics and remain in place yet today. Over the years, other IMTA members stepped up and endowed scholarships in the name of a loved one or a company and today 11 scholarships are given annually. Through the continued efforts of the Foundation board, additional fundraising efforts are currently underway as is an effort to expand the scholarship program in a way that will even more positively impact Iowa’s trucking industry. A task force of Foundation Board members is looking at scholarship models that are being used by other associations in an effort to further develop and expand the scope of the scholarship to make it even more valuable to the trucking industry. For example, a model that includes scholarship dollars as well as an internship opportunity has some real interest to the Foundation board.

Recipient of the Bob Bannister Memorial Scholarship was Katie Twedt who will study elementary education at Iowa State University.

In the meantime, however, the current scholarship program will continue to be a focus of attention and given the number of people that apply each year, the Foundation board is very pleased with the current program as well. Once again over 60 applications came into the IMTA office and the selection committee once again, had a very difficult time selecting the winners.

The Cummins Central Power Scholarship was presented to Trevor Grubb by IMTA member Scott Jones of Cummins Central Power on May 14, 2015.

“I always am honored to be a part of the selection process. It is an honor because all the individuals that submit scholarship applications put a great deal of effort and energy into their application and I enjoy being a part of the selection process. I always wish we could give every applicant a scholarship because they are all deserving, so it is much more difficult than you would think to narrow it down to final winner,” said Kevin Gass, PDI There are a number of steps that are implemented throughout the selection process with several different judges looking at the scholarship applications at the various steps throughout the process. The deadline for applications is March 15th and the 2016 applications will be available via IMTA’s website by January 5th. A special thanks to everyone that supports the scholarship program through their financial contributions as well as through their time and energy serving on a committee, helping us with a check presentation or simply telling their local school about the scholarship program.

Golf Outing

2015 Annual Spring Golf Outing - $25,000 raised at the Event! The annual Truck PAC Iowa golf outing was held once again in late May and over 140 golfers participated. A new record of $25,000 was raised at the outing with all the proceeds going to IMTA’s political action committee. This long standing tradition continues to attract long time members as well as many new participants. Carriers and vendors come together for a day of golf and networking all for a good cause. This annual event has been in existence since the late 1970s and is one of the largest fundraiser that is held for IMTA’s political action committee. IMTA leaders and officers get involved with the effort by having a special fundraising event on hole 10. This year IMTA Chairman of the Board Jackie Johnsrud once again maintained the tradition and had 100% participation in raising additional dollars at the Officers hole. Jackie provided refreshments and snacks at the hole as well personally thanking each golfer for their support.

“Raising money for our PAC is always a top priority and we are fortunate that this outing continues to be an event that the members support and participate in. It was really fun to meet all the golfers as well as get better acquainted with folks. These fundraisers not only raise money but more importantly, they allow another opportunity for IMTA members to get better acquainted with each other as well as IMTA and its many activities,” said IMTA Chairman of the Board, Jackie Johnsrud. 2015 Iowa Truck Driving Championships The 2015 Iowa Truck Driving Championships was again another tremendous success with 119 drivers registered to compete and over a 100 volunteers on hand to help with the event. Legions of professional drivers and their families ascended to Prairie Meadows for the 2-day competition which included a written exam, personal interview, driving skills test and a pre-trip inspection testing. In addition, there were several special events planned for the drivers that included a walk on the red carpet, champagne toast and numerous opportunities for every driver to walk up on stage and receive the recognition they deserve for the job they do each and every day. A record number of over 400 people participated in the final banquet where the awards and championship teams were named. It was another spectacular success all due to the commitment by the planning committee volunteers, dedicated drivers and their families, IMTA staff and of course, the many member companies that continue to send drivers and volunteers year after year. “The Iowa Truck Driving Championships is such a wonderful tradition that wouldn’t be possible without the help and support by many, many people. We are extremely grateful for everyone that gets involved and supports this outstanding event. The personal commitment by the committee members, the volunteers and most importantly the drivers is what truly makes the Iowa TDC such a tremendous success year after year,” said TDC Chairman Lisa Gonnerman. The drivers also participated in the annual team building activity that kicks off the entire event. Once again the drivers were put into small groups and each group was given a different scenario. The group of drivers where then asked to come up with a solution or idea for the scenario and present their idea to the rest of the group. Some groups put together radio and TV ads whereas others designed bill boards or newspaper ads. Once again it was not only a great way to kick off the event but also help the drivers get rid of some nervous energy before they started the competition.

{36

Iowa Motor Truck Association Lifeliner

“We started doing the driver team building exercise 3 years ago and we weren’t sure if it would go over or not…however, it has been a very important and successful addition to our schedule.

Over 400 people attended the final banquet

The drivers really enjoy it and they really like to be able to share their opinions and expertise on some of these issues that are truly impacting our industry. This is also a great way to force the drivers to get better acquainted with one another and remember that despite the competitiveness that inevitably exists at something like this….everyone is here to have some fun too and this activity really does promote that,” said IMTA President Brenda Neville. The drivers enjoy the venue of Prairie Meadows and leave the event with an increased sense of pride and satisfaction in knowing they are valued and respected. “Everyone involved in the TDC is very committed and dedicated to making it a first class event for the drivers. Because we all share that common philosophy, the committee really focuses on ways we can make every year better than the last one. It really is an enjoyable experience as well as extremely gratifying. Nothing brings us greater joy than to see the driver and the driver’s family full of pride and

satisfaction for being part of the trucking industry,” said TDC Co-Chairman Keith Lamfers, Schuster Trucking. IMTA Chairman of the Board Jackie Johnsrud delivered the keynote address on Friday morning and she praised the drivers and their families for the tremendous job they do each and every day. “You are an elite group of professional drivers and you should be very proud of your accomplishments. While today is important, the interactions you have every day on the road are of even greater importance,” said Jackie. Jackie’s message resonated with everyone in the audience and as one participant said at the conclusion, “I can’t imagine not being a part of the Iowa Truck Driving Championships. It truly gives me everything I need to continue to do the job I love. I love being a trucker and I love being a part of something as positive as the Iowa Truck Driving Championships. I can’t thank you enough for putting on such a wonderful event.”

2015 Leadership Class

The Next Generation of Leaders Participate in 2015 Leadership Class IMTA has one of the longest running leadership programs in the nation and the continued support by the membership is a testament to the value of the program and its efforts. This year was no exception, with over 20 individuals participating IMTA Chairman of the Board Jackie Johnsrud/ in the annual leadership Johnsrud Transport took time to speak with the program. The four day participants during a lunch session. Pictured with event featured interactive Jackie Johnsrud are David Adams/McGladrey and sessions, a visit to the State Justin Walters/West Side Transport Capitol and many high caliber speakers that enlightened and motivated the participants. “I wasn’t real sure what to expect but I was honestly blown away by the all the sessions and really learned a lot about myself, IMTA and just the impact we (IMTA) are making in so many different areas. I am grateful to have gotten the chance to be a part of the IMTA leadership program,” said Aaron Cavazos, Solar Transport.

“The leadership program is one of the most important programs we offer because it focuses on the next generation of leaders in this industry. These are the individuals that will one day be running the company as well as the association. Getting them involved, engaged and enthused about IMTA and its scope of work is extremely important in ensuring that IMTA remains a strong and viable organization far into the future,” said IMTA Chairman of the Board, Jackie Johnsrud. “I am continually very impressed and please with the number and quality of participants we get into the leadership program. For over 20 years now, IMTA has continued to invest in its future through this program and it is because of that, I see the excellent leadership that continues to thrive here at IMTA and I credit the leadership program for a lot of that,” said IMTA President Brenda Neville. There is already a waiting list for next year, but applications will be available in January 2016 for the 2016 class which will convene in April of 2016. In addition, the LEAD IMTA CONFERENCE will be held on November 4 & 5th and will feature 2 days of seminars and activities specifically for the next generation, so consider getting registered for that as well.

Participants are either nominated by someone within their company or self-nominate and then they are asked to participate in a four day program over a 2 month period. The first focus of the program is dedicated to learning more about IMTA’s advocacy efforts and its important role in the legislative process on both the state and national level. As a part of that, time is spent at the Capitol with key lawmakers as well as the Governor and Lt. Governor. In addition, the class also learns about other valuable aspects of the association and its roles and responsibilities to the membership and the industry. The second focus is on personal development and participants take part in a series of sessions dedicated to their personal growth in communications, ethical decision making and leadership skills in general. The format is very interactive and focused on broadening and strengthening their knowledge in the trucking industry but also building their confidence and enthusiasm for the industry.

IMTA welcomed Iowa DOT Director, Paul Trombino who gave a very insightful and forward thinking presentation on Freight Movement in Iowa. Final Word

Looking to our Past to Strengthen our Future... By Brenda Neville, IMTA President

I love to hear the stories of how Iowa trucking companies started and the perseverance and commitment that followed as the company continued on its path to success. Every story is full of fascinating and colorful antidotes of the peaks and valleys that often times accompany the road to success. While so many things have changed in trucking…there are many aspects of the business that have not changed which is why the “history” of every operation is so intriguing to me. In Iowa, we proudly have several family businesses that share the same rich history of many generations of involvement and success in trucking. I think these family businesses are at the heart and soul of Iowa’s trucking industry and are one of the main reasons that Iowa continues to have some of the most nationally recognized and respected trucking operations in the nation.

The Smith Family (L-R) Ian Smith, Chairman John Smith and Founder Herald Smith — continues to operate CRST International. As we prepare to go to print, we are mourning the loss of yet another great trucking leader. Herald Smith, founder of CRST passed away on July 27th at the age of 91. Like many other leaders in Iowa’s trucking industry, there is great history in the story of CRST and Herald’s role in starting the company. Herald was only 31 years old when he founded Cedar Rapids Steel Transportation (CRST) with no trucks and no customers. Looking for cheap office space, he set up business in a used chicken coop he purchased for $125. Herald’s determination and entrepreneurial spirit enabled him to find ways to grow the company. In 1980, the company became the number 1 trucking company in Iowa and also achieved a spot in the top 100 companies in the nation. In 1983, Herald retired as CRST’s Chairman of the board, and passed the leadership reigns to his son John, yet he continued to attend CRST board meetings and provided an important link to the company’s history of entrepreneurial growth strategy. Today, CRST has become one of the nation’s largest privately held carriers and continues to be a respected and recognized leader not only in Iowa but throughout the nation. Herald served as IMTA’s Chairman of the Board in 1979 and John followed in his father’s footsteps and served as IMTA’s Chairman of the Board in 1988. This year Ian Smith, grandson of Herald, participated in the IMTA leadership program. It is always a great privilege for me personally to get acquainted with the different generations of a family operation and a tremendous honor to have known three generations of the Smith family.

There is a long list of trucking leaders that are no longer with us and one of my greatest regrets is that we didn’t capture some of their stories and tremendous insight to share with future generations of truckers and IMTA members. In 1991, as we were preparing for the association’s 50th anniversary, I had the opportunity to spend several hours with John Ruan, one of the founders of IMTA. I remember my time with Mr. Ruan as if it happened only yesterday. The stories of his early days in trucking and with IMTA were fascinating, thought provoking and entertaining. It was after that experience that I vowed that we (IMTA) would do a much better job in the future of capturing these stories and preserving a valuable piece of history of the industry and our organization. Well, here we are, only two years away from our 75th anniversary and unfortunately, many cherished trucking leaders are no longer with us and my promise to do a better job of capturing the history of the industry and the association through these various leaders has fallen dramatically short. We did implement the process of compiling a list of folks that we wanted to talk to, but beyond that, we have done nothing else and now as we say goodbye to another icon, I am even more motivated to move

forward in fulfilling our goal of preserving our past through candid and colorful conversations with the great trucking leaders of our organization. In 2017, we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary. As someone that was actively involved in the association’s 50th anniversary, I have deep respect and appreciation for the significance of this upcoming anniversary. This is a rare and unique opportunity for all us to look back at our rich heritage as an organization and use this event to further strengthen IMTA in the future. This celebration will include many generations of IMTA members and will be a wonderful tribute to all the different people that have enabled IMTA to be such a strong and effective organization. In an effort to fulfill our goal of reaching out to past IMTA leaders, we are going to hold a special luncheon later this fall at the IMTA headquarters. We want our past leaders and members who are now enjoying retirement to attend. Once we have this group assembled, we will get them involved in our efforts to capture the thoughts and insights of the trucking icons of yesterday. We will then assemble a group of IMTA ambassadors to go out on our behalf and conduct interviews and capture the experience on video. By doing this, we will be able to preserve an important part of our history into perpetuity. I believe it would be very special to be able to pull out these interviews at IMTA’s 100th anniversary or its 125th anniversary…or at least that is our goal at this point in time. In an effort to help us with this campaign, please send me addresses or email addresses of anyone you think would enjoy attending this IMTA “reunion”. This will be open to truckers as well as vendors. You can send the information to brenda@ iowamotortruck.com and we will begin to build a database of contacts. We will be finalizing the date of the reunion in the very near future and there will be no charge to attend. I hope you share my enthusiasm and desire to make this a successful endeavor. I believe it is essential to our continued success as an organization to always preserve, honor and respect our past…. because inevitably, history repeats itself and by looking to our past, we only strengthen our future.
