Boone, IA
The 2023 Bowl of Hygeia recipient, presented at IPA’s 2023 Annual Meeting in Des Moines, is known to give her time, talent and treasure generously, as demonstrated in over twenty nomination letters from community leaders, pharmacy team members, student mentees and family.
Wendy Kinne is the pharmacist owner of two independent community pharmacies in Boone: Medical Associates Pharmacy and Clinic Pharmacy. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy in 1993 and Doctor of Pharmacy in 2005, both from the University of Iowa. After practicing in Boone for twenty years, Kinne took ownership of the pharmacies in September of 2013. If she wasn’t busy enough operating two pharmacies, Kinne precepts student pharmacists at Drake University and the University of Iowa. She is also certified in providing immunizations, Medication Therapy Management (MTM), and therapeutic shoes.
Kinne’s involvement in her community is widespread, volunteering for organizations such as the Boone County Hospital Board, Educational Endowment Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Central Iowa Healthcare Coalition, 4-H, ChildServe, University of Iowa Athletic Club, Kiwanis, and Boone High School, among many others.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kinne offered her building space to operate a socially-distant COVID vaccination clinic, reducing exposure for community members in Boone. Like many healthcare providers, she dedicated extensive hours in helping vaccinate her community, which helped the county achieve one of the highest vaccination rates in the state of Iowa.
In the words of one nominator, “her impact cannot be overstated.” Kinne is a leader in the pharmacy and in the community, demonstrating great passion, vision and heart in all she does. Kinne’s dedication to her community and patients is nothing short of inspiring.
One of the most prestigious awards in the pharmacy profession, the Bowl of Hygeia recognizes a pharmacist who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to community service. The award is part of a national awards program co-sponsored by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) with one recipient chosen from each state every year. Iowa’s recipient is chosen by a committee of civic leaders from across the state, and the selection is unknown until the evening of the IPA Awards Banquet.

Pharmacist Representative John Forbes is serving his sixth and final term in the Iowa House of Representatives representing District 44. Since 2013, Representative Forbes has been an integral voice and pharmacy advocate in the statehouse, serving on the Ways and Means, Human Resources, Transportation, and Health Policy Oversight Committees, as well as serving as the ranking member of the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee.
Representative Forbes was born in Clarion, graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1975, and received his B.S. in Pharmacy from Drake University in 1980. For over 40 years, Forbes owned and operated Medicap Pharmacy in Urbandale, selling the pharmacy in 2022. He is an active IPA member and Past President (1999-2000), as well as a member of the Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa (HAWK-I) Board, Medical Assistance Advisory Council, and Urbandale Library Foundation Board, among other organizations.
During his time in the legislature, Representative Forbes has committed to educating fellow legislators and stakeholders on pharmacy and healthcare issues, as well as student pharmacists on the importance of advocacy. His dedication to the profession throughout his career is undeniable, as he was awarded the Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year Award in 1990, the Excellence in Innovation Award in 1997, and the Bowl of Hygeia of 2010. IPA is grateful for his public service.
The Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) Appreciation Award was created in 1988 to recognize individuals and corporations for their support of organized pharmacy in the state of Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Bureau of HIV, STI and Hepatitis, Division of Public Health is a vital supporter of IPA and pharmacy practice in the state of Iowa. Since 2018, IPA has worked alongside the Bureau to implement HIV and HCV testing in community pharmacies as part of a federally funded grant program.
Since the start of the project, two staff members have stood out as true pharmacy champions: Biz McChesney, HIV and Hepatitis Section Supervisor, and Cody Shafer-Fritz, Lead Prevention Services Coordinator, NuCara Capacity Extension. Not only have these individuals provided guidance to IPA in navigating a comprehensive federal grant, they were instrumental in developing and delivering education and training to ensure pharmacy success in what was a new landscape for Iowa pharmacists. Their knowledge regarding stigma and counseling on potentially life-changing test results has supplemented the cultural competencies of the participating pharmacies as well as the IPA membership. McChesney and Shafer-Fritz have provided education to pharmacy professionals across practice settings through multiple events, including 2/2/2 webinars and PharmaCE Expo, strengthening the relationship between pharmacy and public health.
IPA is grateful for the collaboration and partnership with the Bureau of HIV, STI and Hepatitis to improve the health of our communities.

Rhonda Eid was born and raised in Fort Madison, Iowa, graduating from Fort Madison High School in 1977. At age 17, Eid began working at the pharmacy, which was then Rashid Drug. After a few years as a cashier, Eid was pulled behind the counter to help the pharmacist, and the rest is history.
Eid became one of the first certified pharmacy technicians in Iowa. As of September 2023, she has worked at the same pharmacy, now named Nelson Family Pharmacy, for 45 years—an astonishing feat! Under three owners, the original owner, George Rashid, his son, Joe Rashid, and the current owner, Tom Nelson, Eid has continued to learn and develop her skills.
Eid is well-regarded in the community, and her patients enjoy each interaction they have with her. Eid is praised for her customer service skills, her technician abilities, and her reliability as a team member. Her current responsibilities include communicating with doctor’s offices, processing scripts, and managing the med sync program.
Eid’s enthusiasm for pharmacy is undeniable. IPA thanks her for her commitment to her patients and the profession!
Eid has two daughters, Breanne and Kaitlyn, and five grandchildren. She enjoys traveling, having previously visited Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland, and is looking forward to a trip to Iceland this November.

“Patient Satisfaction with Pharmacist Involvement in an MAT Clinic”
Emma
Piehl, PharmD
AUTHORS: Emma Piehl, PharmD; Matthew J. Witry; Linnea A. Polgreen; Stevie R. Veach; Rachel I. Otting; Amanda A. Powers; Jess P. Smith
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this project is to evaluate a more convenient approach for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) distribution for patients being seen in the Turning Point Treatment Clinic (TPTC) located within MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center. The current care model in the TPTC allows patients access to healthcare providers and supportive care personnel (e.g., psychiatrists and psychologists, a medical director, certified and licensed counselors, a therapist, social workers, nutritionists, pastoral care, and registered nurses) while present in the clinic setting. The patients then must leave the clinic itself to collect their prescription from the pharmacy. The inclusion of pharmacy in clinic procedures will allow for a more patient-centered collaborative care model. The objectives are to collect data on patient, provider, and pharmacy staff satisfaction with the inclusion of pharmacy in the TPTC and patient adherence to MAT and maintenance medications, when applicable.
METHODS: Participants for this evaluation included patients enrolled and receiving care from the TPTC, supportive personnel, and pharmacy staff. For patients, anonymous experience surveys were disseminated while patients waited for their prescriptions via a printed QR code to a Google Form or could re-
quest a paper survey which could be completed in-clinic, or returned with a postage paid envelope. Providers, supportive care personnel associated with the TPTC and the pharmacy staff were emailed a link to the Google Form survey via email. All data were de-identified and downloaded to an Excel file for analysis. This quality improvement study used descriptive statistics to summarize participant characteristics and responses to scaled items.
RESULTS: The surveys conducted reached a total of 39 eligible patients with 15 completing the survey (38.5% response rate), and 7 staff members with 6 completing the survey (85.7% response rate). Prior to direct clinic involvement, 13.3% of patients surveyed stated they had left the clinic without picking up their prescriptions, 46.7% avoided the pharmacy due to the wait time for their prescription, and 33.3% felt they did not have the ability to ask medication-related questions. After clinic involvement, 93.3% of patients surveyed stated they are more likely to pick up and take their medications as prescribed, 86.7% are more likely to ask medication-related questions, and 100% are likely to recommend this clinic to friends or family who may be struggling with opioid dependence.
CONCLUSION: Direct pharmacy involvement within an MAT clinic improves patient and provider satisfaction.
