Planning

Students share experience on entertainment committee By Sarah.Binder iowastatedaily.com Though the entire university and community come together to celebrate VEISHEA, two students play a special role in planning the celebration each year. BJ Brugman and Michael Weber are the general chairmen for VEISHEA 2011. Brugman, junior in agricultural business, became involved with VEISHEA his freshman year by joining the Entertainment Committee. He said it was both fun, and a lot of pressure, since so many people in VEISHEA and on campus are interested in what the entertainment will be. “If you want to get hooked on something, join the Entertainment Committee,” Brugman said. His second year, Brugman was an entertainment chairman, before becoming a general chairman this year. He credited his house with pushing him to get involved early. He said that although members of Alpha Gamma Rho are involved in many things, most of them become involved with VEISHEA at some point. When Brugman came into the house as a freshman, one of the members, Mark Pierce, was a general chairman. Brugman said he looked up to Pierce as a leader and a friend. Weber, senior in family finance, housing and policy, had a different experience. Growing up in Ames, he attended VEISHEA events on and off every year. However, he became much more interested after being selected as a VEISHEA scholar his senior year of high school and spending VEISHEA on campus. Coming from different backgrounds and with different personalities, the two chairmen have found a complementary balance.

“Weber and I complement each other well. He rolls his eyes at me a lot,” Brugman said. As business manager, Weber had experience working with all facets of VEISHEA, building up a strong base of internal knowledge. Brugman described himself as more of the spokesperson. “He’s the more outgoing type,” Weber said. “We definitely complement each other well, both in knowledge about VEISHEA and our personalities.” “They are very much a complement to each other,” said Gail Ferlazzo, associate director of the Memorial Union and one of two advisers

for VEISHEA. Ferlazzo described Weber as being very detail oriented, and Brugman as more likely to ask questions and bring creative new ideas. She said she has advised six sets of VEISHEA chairpersons, and not all of them worked together so well. For Brugman, it was about learning to see the big picture. He said when he was involved with the Entertainment Committee, it was all about planning for those specific events, but the chairmen’s job is to check in on everything and help wherever possible. He said the experience has helped him to learn about being a leader and communi-

cating with different types of people. “I’ve had the opportunity to work under some great leaders that have given me a good experience, and I hope others can say the same about my run,” Brugman said. Weber said one of the challenges in his transition has been to let go of the business manager role, and not overstep the current manager. Brugman said they have focused on leaving VEISHEA in a strong place to move into the future. For example, VEISHEA has been working to make their budget self-sufficient during the past several years. “Sometimes the things

you’re most proud of might not be the most visible on the surface,” Brugman said. “You don’t have to have just the best VEISHEA ever to leave your mark. Obviously you want everything to go smoothly, for people to have a great time, for the weather to be good.” “Ultimately, that’s the goal: for the people to enjoy the celebration.” Brugman said he would continue to be involved with VEISHEA in his senior year, but probably not in the chairman role. For Weber, who has spent the past three years involved with VEISHEA year-round, graduating in the spring will be bittersweet.

Cookbook author to speak at Great Hall By Julia.Ferrell iowastatedaily.com The 2011 VEISHEA comedian, author and actress Amy Sedaris, will lecture Monday night in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Sedaris is the author of a satirical cookbook, “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence,” and the recently-released craft book “Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People.” Sedaris has appeared on television in “Sex and the City,” “Just Shoot Me” and “Strangers with Candy,” as well as on screen in “The School of Rock,” “Elf” and “Shrek the Third.” Sedaris is also the younger sister of writer and comedian, David Sedaris. For any college students unfamiliar with Sedaris, below is a list of 10 things about the actress that fans didn’t know either.

10 things you didn’t know about Amy Sedaris

1.

Her favorite things to do in her spare time are

cook, read and paint. “I have lots of paint in my apartment,” Sedaris said. “I just painted a cabinet; it’s like a really bright canary yellow.” While she enjoys cooking, one of the best dishes she’s ever made is Spanakopita, a Greek pastry filled with chopped spinach, feta cheese and onions. Her favorite craft from her book, “Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People,” is her Real Hob Knob Glass Candles. “I really like the Hob Knob Glass, where you take a jar and you glue peas on it and then you paint it white and you can put a candle in it or something,” Sedaris said. After one of her dinner parties, the strangest object she found while cleaning was a tooth in an ashtray. To this day, Sedaris cannot explain the phenomenon. “I have no idea how it got there, I don’t know who put it there,” she said. The weirdest fan request Sedaris has gotten was being asked to cut someone’s hair on stage.

2. 3.

4. 5.

“A person asked me to cut their hair … so I did that,” Sedaris said. “It was fun, I enjoyed it. Her hair was clean and everything, so I didn’t mind.” While on book and lecture tours, Sedaris enjoys the traveling aspect. Her most embarrassing moment was in the early 1990s, when she was dressed up as a cow on stage. “I had a huge mascot head on and I couldn’t see very well,” Sedaris said. “I completely walked off stage and landed in the audience in someone’s lap.” If she could perform alongside any actor, she would want to work with Regina King, who she particularly likes on the show, “Southland.” Her secret talent is her ability to come up with last-minute costumes. “I can find that one thing in my apartment that’ll just seal it,” Sedaris said. Her least favorite interview question is being asked “tell me about yourself.”

Donald Glover has made a name for himself all over the entertainment industry. As a comedian and actor, he met success with the project Derrick Comedy. The group garnered attention with short but outrageous YouTube videos like “Bro Rape,” which now has more than 8 million views. Glover’s standup special premiered on Comedy Central just more than a year ago, and he will bring his material with him when he performs in Stephens Auditorium on Saturday of VEISHEA weekend. He started his career at New York University, where he obtained a degree in dramatic writing in 2006. He was nominated for the Writers Guild of America award for best comedy series at the February 2009 ceremony for his work as a staff writer on the third season of “30 Rock.” He is perhaps most recognized for his role as Troy on NBC’s popular program “Community.” Most recently, he has delved into the world of music as a rapper under the moniker Childish Gambino.

VEISHEA Says I’m Funny

Event emcee beat the odds to win last year’s competition By Cole Komma Ames247 writer

VEISHEA Says I’m Funny

On a late night in the residence halls, Andrew Lopez and his friends were watching YouTube videos. One of them happened to be a pretty poor stand-up comedian. He thought the performance was inadequate and felt he could do better. His friends said prove it, so he signed up for VEISHEA Says I’m Funny. And he won. “I just entered it for fun” he said, not knowing his life would be changed. He was given seven minutes to bring out his comedic best. His act

had some cursing and he said he was told he could swear. However, when he arrived that night he was told he couldn’t. This made him nervous because many of his punchlines included cursing.

“I just cursed anyway.” Lopez, junior in communication studies and winner of last year’s VEISHEA Says I’m Funny, will serve as this year’s emcee. Now Lopez can be found all over

the Midwest doing shows at different colleges. In his younger days, Lopez was drawn to comedians such as Aziz Ansari and Reggie Watts, who appeal to college kids. His style of jokes and delivery mostly came from Ansari. “I like to talk to the crowd, and sort of use them in my act” he said. His favorite joke is when he takes a copy of the Iowa State Daily and pretends as though he wrote a letter to the editor of the issue. Before he performs he prefers to sit alone and tells himself negative thoughts such as “I’m not funny.” “I use comedy to vent some ideas I have” Lopez said. He has crush on a certain girl who goes to Iowa State

and refers to her in many of his shows to vent his emotions. “I don’t really know what I want to do,” he said “I would like to move to Los Angeles and just do comedy, like Judd Apatow.” Apatow started doing exactly what Andrew is doing: working for his school and booking acts for different events. Now, Apatow is a movie producer of many hit movies including “Superbad,” “Anchorman” and “The 40 Year Old Virgin.” Lopez urges anyone interested on comedy to just do it. “Stand up anywhere and everywhere.”

Idol contestants whittled down, top 10 to perform By Allison Suesse Ames247 writer After a round of preliminaries, 40 Cyclone Idol contestants were whittled down to 10 competitors who will be performing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. VEISHEA entertainment co-chairs Amy Peyton, senior in agricultural business, and Will Postler, junior in religious studies, have been working on preparations for the upcoming competition, which will feature rapper Coolio as the emcee. During the preliminary round, the applicants had five minutes to wow the judges. This year, not much has changed from previous events, other than the committee’s decision to select a more popular emcee. “We’re hoping to draw

more people having Coolio host,” Peyton said. The co-chairs received 40 applications, which was the amount they were expecting to receive, and after two nights of preliminaries, judges selected 10 performers. The judges, who include faculty and community members with musical backgrounds, will be looking for vocal talent, presence on stage and other similar aspects. “We’re excited about the

applicants, “Peyton said. “They look pretty cool, lots of variety of songs.” For last year’s Cyclone Idol champion, Joseph Trpkosh, senior in music, the contest is less about the prestige and more about sharing talent and the message of the song. His advice for competitors is “enjoy the process and don’t get too caught up in winning the competition.” “I wasn’t entering the contest to win and because of this I think the most memorable part was the enjoyment of the process,” Trpkosh said. Trpkosh received $200 for his first place win, but said the best piece of advice for the contestants is to enjoy the experience. “Singing is not about winning competitions, but rather sharing your talent and the message of your song,” Trpkosh said.

In 1939, a cast of ISU students performed a variety show on the athletic field that is now Eaton and Martin Halls. The show would mark the first year of one of VEISHEA’s longest-running events. Since 1922, Stars Over VEISHEA has entertained the Ames community with variety shows and musicals. Over its 89-year run, the VEISHEA event has gone through many transitions in both its productions and location. For a number of years, the event was led by ISU students, who would serve as music and dramatics directors, as well as choreographers, designers and costumers. The shows began before Iowa State had a strong theater program, and the event became the starting point for the collaboration between ISU Theatre and the VEISHEA committee. Since the first Stars Over VEISHEA show, called The Nite Show prior to 1939, the event has moved to different locations across campus, including Stephens Auditorium, Fisher Theater and the Armory. During her time at Iowa State, Connie Ringlee saw the event move from the Armory to its first performance on the Stephens Auditorium stage. Ringlee, senior lecturer of English, acted in the 1968 and 1969 productions and directed the 1970 show, “Oliver!” Ringlee

said her directing experience from the show has helped her in her work as the Ames High School speech coach. While directing the 1970 production, Ringlee said she learned the event was much more popular than she had thought. “I had an actress in my cast that was from Illinois. She said that she actually came to Iowa State because of Stars Over VEISHEA,” Ringlee said. “She’d gone to one of the productions when she was in high school, and the idea of students producing and directing a show of that magnitude just blew her mind.” When Ringlee was directing, Stars over VEISHEA had a $10,000 budget. With the university struggling from economic problems, funding for Stars over VEISHEA has been slightly cut recently. Katie Pernula, freshman in marketing and the Stars over VEISHEA chairperson, said the cut is the main reason the event is being moved from Stephens Auditorium to Fisher Theater this year. At the end of March, the VEISHEA committee chose “Rent” as next year’s Stars over VEISHEA production. “We tried to pick a musical for next year that will cater towards students more,” Pernula said. “We have had to have budget cuts from the economy, and Stars over VEISHEA did take a lot of that hit because it was more community-based than student-based.”

customers. Most of my jobs are on-site, stunt jobs.” Klatt typically spends around one-to-two hours turning a piece of old wood into an intricate masterpiece. He has received some odd requests for carvings as well as strange places to do those drawings. “I think the strangest place I’ve done a carving for would have to be the North Central Correctional Facility,” Klatt said. “I did a bust of three dogs because they train seeing-eye dogs there before bringing them up to Minnesota for further training. The prisoners paid for it. The thing is, they were moved the next year so I don’t think they were too happy about that.” The biggest wood carving Klatt has ever done was a whopping 35-foot tall animal sculpture. “It was a bunch of eagles with some dogs and raccoons at the bottom. That one took me around 100 hours to make.”

Hypnotist Brian Imbus strives to incorporate pop culture into his performance to gain a larger audience. He has been performing as a hypnotist for more than 19 years and puts on more than 200 shows a year. He specializes in college and high school performances and has performed in several countries. His show Thursday, April 14, will be his third VEISHEA appearance. Some acts this year are spin-offs of the popular reality TV shows “Dancing with the Stars” and “American Idol.” “When reality shows come out, I always try to do something relevant to them. I’m always trying to incorporate the most popular bits of the shows,” Imbus said. During the “American Idol” segment of the show, the participants selected will be told they’re judges and will have to evaluate a performance as if they were on the show. Imbus thinks he is popular with the students because he is always incorporating new things into his performances. “Each routine that I create for the show I try to keep it up with pop culture. The music in the show is always updated and I try to keep it relevant

with things happening on campus,” Imbus said. Taylor Austin and Connor Nolan, the VEISHEA committee members in charge of campus events, said they asked Imbus to perform at VEISHEA again because he is from Iowa and “is a great performer to work with.” “We know his shows will be entertaining for students, alumni, and community members alike,” Austin and Nolan said. Imbus will also be performing a few acts the audience might remember from previous years. “We will be doing the Voodoo Doll routine where we turn a sock monkey in to a Voodoo Doll. The volunteers will mimic the doll and feel everything the doll feels,” Imubs said. Even though Imbus uses some of the same routines as before, he always add something new. “I always try to incorporate something new and give the audience a different flavor than they’ve seen before,” Imbus said. Due to the high turnout at last year’s shows, Imbus will be performing twice. “The doors usually open an hour before the show, we usually have students lining up outside the room to get in,” Imbus said.

Jeff Klatt is not your average artist. Instead of using paint brushes or clay he uses something with a bit more heft to it: chainsaws and old trees. Klatt is a chainsaw artist from Storm Lake. He started chainsaw sculpting more than 20 years ago. “I was at a nursery up in Lake Okoboji back in ’89 the first time I saw anyone making these sculptures and I thought it was really neat,” Klatt said. “A friend of mine from work really got me interested in it. The next weekend I traded in one of my old motorcycles and bought some cheap saws and taught myself. I’ve really been going at it since 1990.” Klatt kept chainsaw sculpting as a part-time hobby for a few more years and since then has turned his hobby into a full-on business, creating Runaway Saws. Since he discovered his beloved hobby, Klatt has created thousands of sculptures. Klatt said what sculptures he does depends on what people give him. “A lot of times people will come up to me with an idea or a picture and ask me to make it into a carving,” he said. “A lot of people like the eagle sculptures I do, so I often make a lot of those for

World record ‘Regurgitator’ to attempt impossible trick By Julia Ferrell Ames247 writer While most children his age were busy laughing and playing games, Stevie Starr was swallowing his pocket money. The odd trait would go on to make the little boy from Scotland one of the most widely-recognized entertainers in the world. The talent came by “pure accident” when Starr was growing up in a children’s home in Glasgow. “It just came naturally,” Starr said. “It’s just a natural ability.” Starr left his hometown and began to perform his trick in the entertainment business. He first appeared in a Scottish talent contest and won. Shortly after, he began to build his own act. Audiences crowded around to see Starr perform tricks such as swallowing two live goldfish and bringing them back up at the end of the show, perfectly unharmed. It was that trick with the live goldfish that led to Starr’s entertainment title – the Regurgitator. The phenomenon eventually granted Starr his own spot in the Guinness Book of World Records after he successfully swallowed and brought back 10 half dollar coins. His best trick, however, was still to come. Starr began to make his act a bit more difficult by adding one small, colorful puzzle

known as the Rubik’s Cube. But simply swallowing the block and returning it would not be enough for his new trick. Starr instead decided to swallow, solve the cube, and then bring it back. While audiences world-wide still scratch their heads at the act, Starr insists a performer only needs one trait to pull off the stunt. “You have to be crazy,” he laughs at the trick. The entertainer eventually caught the eye of talent agent, Mike Malley, and now, the two have been working together for years. “Mike had asked me to do a show in London and I said ‘Can you manage me?’” Starr recalls. “And that was it ever since.” With Malley as an agent, Starr has made appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” This year’s visit to Iowa State for VEISHEA will be Starr’s third visit to the student.

61Syx Teknique

Breakdancing crew to perform on Central Campus By McKenzie Vogt Special to Ames247 For some, dancing is a hobby, for others a job. For the 61Syx Teknique Breakdancing Crew it’s a lifestyle. “It affects all of us in different ways, but the effect is gigantic on all of us,” said Keegan Loye, booking manager and active dancer. “I learn more about myself through dancing than anything I have ever done before.” 61Syx Teknique Breakdancing Crew, based out of Grand Rapids, Mich., was started by a group of friends that attended North View High School in 2004 . These four students started performing at local

talent shows and were later joined by another dancer from a different high school. Since then the group has been linking up with other aspiring dancers.

In 2005, the crew began attending the annual Blues on the Mall festival in downtown Grand Rapids, setting up shop on a corner to dance. This event introduced the group to about five or six of its current members. “It’s a big festival so random people just stroll around, and that is how I met the crew,” Loye said. “I have been dancing before, but coming across someone else that actually does the same thing is a big eye opener.” The traveling five will perform Saturday, April 16 as part of the VEISHEA celebration. There are 16 members in their current family. The traveling five are those who can commit 15 to 20 hours

a week rehearsing, four come as often as they can, compete and perform in local shows and the other seven are considered non-active because they have other priorities before dancing. The traveling five -- Seoul, Raze1, K2Roc, Goblin and Vertichu -- all come from different backgrounds. “If you see our crew, you are going to think ‘diversity’ for two reasons,” Loye said. “First off, we bring a Dutch, an Italian, an African American, a Puerto Rican and a Korean, but we also dance very different.” The crew makes sure that the audience will be able to see a little bit of everybody in the routines, making it

possible to even decide who created what part. The crew is also able to imitate each other’s styles pretty well because they spend so much time together. The normal performance by the 61Syx group is not all dancing. They will incorporate a battle and a game of jeopardy, where people can guess the name of moves the crewmembers will portray in order to win a prize. “The performance itself is like a timeline based off of hip-hop, so when it started in the ‘70s to the ‘80s through the ‘90s,” said Loye. After the performance, the crew will be available for questions.

International food fair offers tastes from 17 different places

Friends display unique talents

To get a taste of 17 countries all in one sitting, visit the annual International Food Fair during VEISHEA. The International Student Council will be hosting 17 international student organizations in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on Saturday. Each organization will have a booth with three authentic foods from their home country. Every year foods are featured from places like Japan, India and Africa. “It’s not every day you get food from 17 different countries in one place on campus ... this is a special deal,” said Ashvin Sudhaharan, senior in marketing and an event coordinator for the International Student Council. This year he is in charge of the International Food Fair. There is an entrance fee of $3 and each food item costs 50 cents. But for the first time, the International student Council will be preselling ticket bundles. For $10 you will cover the entrance fee and receive 15 food tickets. The bundles will be on sale during the week of VEISHEA, April 11-15, in the MU in front of the West Student Office Space. Each participating organization receives a portion of the profit and the rest goes to the International

When Evan Young and Jonathan Burns first performed together, it wasn’t necessarily their own choice. The two were trying to sell their individual acts to colleges at a trade show; Burns with talents like magic, comedy, juggling, contortion and fire-eating and Young as a juggler and comedian. Prospective buyers kept asking if they worked together. “We said ‘no’ to a few people,” Burns said. “Then we realized we should be saying ‘yes.’ Really, it was the people’s choice.” “So we wrote some material and gave it a go,” Young said. For the past five years, Young and Burns have been traveling together much of the time as the Showoff Show. Their material started as a merger of their own individual performances, but has since become more refined. Their show on Friday will be more than just comedy. Circus-style tricks and stunts

along with vaudevillian contortionism and juggling are just a few of the things the duo can do. The audience can even take some of their pranks home with them – part of the act is teaching the crowd some amusing tricks. “You not only get to see something and be involved in the show, but you also get to learn something to show your friends afterward,” Burns said. The two met long before they decided to work together on performers.net, an online community for international performers. After Burns got his degree from Millersville University in Pennsylvania, he went straight to street performance. Young had a somewhat similar history, beginning his street performances in Boulder, Colo., after leaving the Circomedia International Circus School. The street teaches skills that can’t be learned in a classroom and was an important stepping stone in their careers. “You have to learn quickly if you want to make money,”

Burns said, “It’s all based on the people who stop to see you. You learn how to work with the people and get them to stay. You learn a lot of stage skills you can’t learn anywhere else.” Eventually the two met up in their line of work, performing on the streets of Baltimore, Md., in an amphitheater with plenty of tourists to entertain. They had both enjoyed their work from a young age. Young was the class clown and left his hometown of Colombia, Mo., to attend circus school immediately after high school. He learned to juggle at age 15.

By Dylan Boyle Ames247 writer A new sound has surfaced in the country music world and Nashvillebased Gloriana, following in the footsteps of artists like Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts, has risen as one of the next big pop-country bands. Gloriana hit the road Friday, kicking off a tour taking them across the country and to VEISHEA over the next five months. Rachel Reinert, one of the band’s four vocalists, said the group hasn’t toured since November and is anxious to debut new songs from Gloriana’s second album, to be released this summer. The band has released “Wanna Take You Home” -- the first single from the album -- in early March. “We just spent the last eight days rehearsing and getting everything all together,” Reinert said. “We obviously have this nervousness because it’s new, but we’re really excited about it.” Gloriana formed three years ago in Nashville as a project by brothers

I think that this record definitely shows the growth and evolution of the band.” -Rachel Reinert

Tom and Mike Gossin, both guitarists and vocalists for the band, mandolin player Cheyenne Kimball, and Reinert. In 2009, the band released it’s debut self-titled album with the upbeat hit “Wild at Heart.” Along with hits from the first album, Reinert said Gloriana will perform new songs and a few covers at VEISHEA as well. “I think that this record is definitely shows the growth and evolution of the band,” she said. “When we did the first record, we had only been together for about a year, and we were still trying to figure out who we were as a band. So we had about three years of touring under our belts and being together everyday, I think we really got a grasp on what we wanted to say.” Reinert said she was raised listening to country music and really admired Shania Twain as a child. Along with the other members of the band, she said they all bring a variety of influences into the music they play, especially from artists that

use a lot of vocal harmonies. “One of the main components when we decided what kind of sound and direction we wanted to go in, you look at a band like the Eagle’s and you listen to their music, and that would have been country music if that would have come out today. You know that very cool, 70s type of vibe and everybody sings the harmonies,” Reinert said. “So it was between them and Fleetwood Mac, with the same kind of components of interlacing harmonies,” she said. The modern rock sound coupled with the feeling of traditional country songs has lead to this creation of a more modern pop country sound, one the band embraces. “I think that’s a natural thing in music,” she said. “You listen to any genre of music from 50 years ago, it’s obviously going to change and grow. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing and without those other artists we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” Reinert said.

Neon Trees combine pop, rock

By Allison Suesse Ames247 writer “A Neon Trees show is not a spectators sport,” says Branden Campbell. Since forming in 2005 in Utah, the four members who make up the Trees -- Tyler Glenn, vocals/synth; Elaine Bradley, drums; Chris Allen, guitars; and Campbell, bassist -- have accrued an immense amount of attention for the type of infections pop songs that are actually fun getting stuck in your head. Neon Trees will be bringing its brand of highenergy rock songs to the Live @ VEISHEA stage Saturday, April 16. “We’re a rock band playing pop songs,” Campbell said. “We like the catchiness of pop music and pop melodies ... but we also like the energy of rock.” The band started out releasing music on independent labels until 2008 when it signed with Mercury Records. Gaining recognition, Campbell said, has been great. Starting off on a smaller label, the band needed to establish a solid work ethic. With the success, though, Campbell said they’re working harder and logging longer hours. Neon Trees released the album “Habits” in 2010, which incorporates elements of the new wave style popularized in the 1980s. Campbell said there’s an element of familiarity in Neon Tree’s music, while still incorporating fresh elements to the classic style. “It’s less pretentious than a lot of other music

that’s been coming out lately,” Campbell said. “I think it’s fun. It’s very melodic.” Neon Trees began touring with My Chemical Romance on March 31, and Campbell mentioned there have already been some memorable moments on the road. On the first night, the bass player from Green Day brought two guitars for Neon Trees as a good luck gift for the start of the tour. My Chemical Romance also welcomed Neon Trees to the tour with a bobblehead of “Jersey Shore’s” Mike “The Situation.” “They said every band needs a masthead, someone to guide us,” Campbell said. So with The Situation as its guide, Neon Trees will continue on the tour with My Chemical Romance to Coachella Music Festival on Sunday in California, which is why the band wasn’t able to be the headliner. The band self-released the EPs “Becoming Different People” in 2006, and “Start a Fire” in 2009. When it opened for The Killers, it began to receive national attention. Their 2010 single “Animal” hit number 13 on the Billboard Top 100. The cast of “Glee” covered the band’s song “Animal” How much do you know about Neon Trees? Answers at the bottom. 1. Cloud Cult mixes music, art By Julia Ferrell Ames247 writer

Along with hip hop and country music, the Live @ VEISHEA concert will also feature the orchestral rock sound of Cloud Cult. The Minnesota-native band will perform as part of the Friday night concert line-up and it will be their first time playing at VEISHEA. The band started in 2000, when lead singer Craig Minowa began adding performers to his solo work. In 2003, the band played on student radio stations in Minnesota and became successful enough they decided to begin performing as a live band. Cloud Cult is composed of eight members, with instruments ranging from the trombone to the glockenspiel, and the band has been compared to Arcade Fire and Radiohead. Two of

the band members do not have an instrument, but instead are live painters. During each performance, they create visual art on stage while the band plays. The name “Cloud Cult” is derived from a section of prophecies from the Native American Hopi tribe. Minowa said the prophecies focus on “the role of technology and nature and human life.” Mankind is entering a new era where humans and technology will live in harmony with the planet, according to the prophecies. In an effort to follow the prophecies, the band does their best to protect the environment. Minowa’s own record company, Earthology Records, uses only recycled materials. “There weren’t any environmentally-friendly record companies or CD manufacturing companies,” Minowa said. “We wanted to be able to do our products in a really environmentallyfriendly way.” For each album the band makes, the company uses re-used CD cases, soybased printing ink and recycled paper for their album sleeves. The band also donates a large amount of their money to wind power companies and plants hundreds of trees each year. By Dylan Boyle Ames247 writer Indie folk musicians The River Monks take their name literally from the city they love and will bring their organic sound of layered harmonies to this year’s Live @ VEISHEA. The foursome of Des Moines-based music school graduates take their name from the city of Des Moines — French for “The Monks.” Legend has it that when the French discovered Des Moines, they saw two monks fishing in the river and named the town after them. Harnessing the harmonic indie rock power of artists like Sufjan Stevens, the band recorded an organic, home album mastered at The Spacement in Ames and released in March. Ryan Stier, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, started playing solo shows in 2009 and eventually started looking for others to start a band and met fellow musician Joel Gettys playing at the Des Moines Playhouse. The two then added Nick Frampton and Drew Rauch to complete the foursome of musicians who tackle vocal duties and several instruments each during live shows. Since all four are classically-trained musicians, Stier said their music school experience helps in adding harmonies and getting all the parts played. “It definitely, definitely helps,” he said. “We all sing in the band and going to music school really helped I think in getting our ears a little bit better. Just sort of having music knowledge and being able to I guess communicate with more musical language, I think that helps. And we’ve all just become better musicians by go-

ing to music school as well.” The Monks started putting together an album last May, recorded in Frampton’s parents house and his house in Creston. Stier described the process of home recording as very organic and relaxed, since they didn’t have to pay for studio time and could experiment more. “The other cool part about it is there’s a lot of points in the record where you can — we would record in his kitchen — so you can hear outside noises like birds chirping or lawn mowers and stuff,” he said. “It’s pretty organic sounding, I guess. Which is something we wanted. We didn’t want it to sound overproduced; kind of more real.” Because the group uses so many instruments in songs, recreating the sound live can be a challenge. That’s where their musical training comes in handy. “Joel will sometimes play two or three parts or responsibilities or whatever. But he’s so good he can do it pretty easily,” he said. “A lot of times Nick will be running around and changing instruments during songs.” Stier said the band’s performance at VEISHEA will be a benchmark for the band, as it will probably be their biggest show yet. “I’m most looking forward to being in Ames cause we’ve only played a few shows in Ames and it’s a good town and we’d like to play there more often,” Stier said. “It will maybe open up some more opportunities,” he said. By Dylan Boyle Ames247 writer Cedar Avenue has already had a small taste of stardom and the Minneapolis band formed by three high school friends will bring their acoustic synthrock sound to VEISHEA this weekend. Guitarist Jesse Matthews and Bassist Kyle Wachter formed the Augustana-inspired group in high school after winning free studio time, but the two went their separate ways for college. When the duo and high school friend drummer Shawn Burtis returned home, they met at a local show and started jamming again and added Jesse’s wife, Derrin. “It was just two of them for many years, and they just communicated back and forth,” Burtis said. “Once they got back, we started to go over to Jessie’s house and we’d just start jamming on some ideas he had.” He said the band starts creating their sound based around an acoustic guitar part and adds bass, drums and other elements and eventually synthesizer. It’s a sound that melds together traditional folk music with modern

day techno. In March of 2008, Cedar Avenue recorded their first album, recorded in the Matthews house and started sending a few songs to music supervisors and landed their song “7 years” in on the season finale episode of ABC’s “Rookie Blue.” “We got a lot of downloads and comments and a lot of exposure which was really cool,” he said. Along with a spot on “Rookie Blue,” the band landed a song on the “City Sampler,” a compilation album released in Minnesota that featured music from artists like John Mayer as well. Currently, Cedar Avenue is touring to support that record and lined up several shows at colleges, including VEISHEA. Burtis said students should expect to hear great melodies and harmonies in their live show based more around the actual music than crazy stage antics. “We really excel at writing music that is fun to listen to and that’s what we’ve built our career around,” he said. “You won’t see any fireworks or backflips like hardcore rock bands. We just try and write music people enjoy listening to.”

You might have seen Volholla before in Ames — most likely prowling around Zeke’s with lead singer Cece Frey dressed in a leopard print onepiece and combat boots. Frey and college friend Matt Elifiritz started collaborating in Decactur, Ill. after Frey decided to move on from singing covers and country songs in bars to doing her own material. Elifiritz started writing music with her that started as pop songs then added an electronic feel. The band has released one album of pop songs so far, with the single “Animals” — a song Frey said they wrote in about two hours — getting radio play around Illinois. “I think what you can expect from our debut album is a really fun sound and it has an electro-pop

sound to it,” Frey said. “Matt and I are both very goofy people and we definitely try to get that vibe into some of our songs. So some of our songs are pretty outlandish.” That outlandish style reflects in their stage show, as well as the drive to and from shows. “When we went on tour in February, we had to drive from Decatur to Chicago and then Chicago and Ames so I wanted to be comfortable the whole way. So I wore a multi-colored leopard-print onesie that entire trip,” Frey said. “”I walked into a Subway one time and there was this family with two little girls and there parents were looking at each other like ‘oh gosh, what is she doing’ and the little girls got a big kick out of it.” Frey and Elifiritz promised that outlandish style as well as electro-beats will spice up their performance this year’s Friday Live @ VEISHEA.
