Lincoln House. Max said that it was thrilling for him to be in the actual spaces where members of the Lincoln family spent time. He expressed keen appreciation for the Harlan-Lincoln House as an historical treasure. Both enjoyed performing in the renovated Iowa Wesleyan Chapel Auditorium and would welcome an opportunity to return and present a different program in the future. a

Celebrating the local connection to latest Spielberg movie Main Street Cinemas in Mount Pleasant highlighted the HarlanLincoln story during the run of the acclaimed Steven Spielberg film “Lincoln” in January. The marquee called attention to the local historic connection to the Lincoln legacy. Friends of the Harlan-Lincoln House provided brochures and posters to bring awareness of the connection to theater-goers. a

The film is based on Larimer’s book of the same name. Jacob and Emeline Ritner, the couple who wrote the letters, were Larimer’s great-grandparents. The Ritners lived in Henry County and Ritner served as captain in the 25th Iowa Infantry. a friends of the harlan-lincoln house, iowa wesleyan college, 601 n main street, mt. pleasant, iowa 52641 Lynn Ellsworth, Executive Director, iwcarch@iwc.edu, phone: 319-385-6320

from the Illinois Central Railroad on a break from a trial in Galena, Lincoln made a side trip to Dubuque in 1859. The party reportedly stayed at the extravagant Julien House hotel, an impressive structure that greeted travelers crossing the Mississippi River into Iowa. While the original hotel was destroyed by fire in 1913, its elegant replacement completed in 1915 is still open as the Hotel Julien Dubuque.

1859: Lincoln travels to Council Bluffs In what may have been Lincoln’s most significant Iowa visit, he traveled to Council Bluffs a year before becoming a serious challenger for the Republican nomination for president. After a speech in the Kansas Territory, Lincoln arranged a trip up the Missouri River to Council Bluffs to survey parcels of land his friend, Norman Judd, had offered as security on a loan. He also made arrangements for a speech on “political issues of the day,” which gathered a packed house for what the Council Bluffs Nonpareil then described as a “masterly and unanswerable speech.” Lincoln was introduced to Grenville Dodge, a civil engineer working for the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad. University, the script about a college-aged son’s surprise visit back home with his girlfriend was the winner of Tallgrass’ seventh annual Iowa Playwrights Workshop. It’s been polished over the last few months with feedback from public readings and the usual rehearsals Tallgrass devotes to all of its plays, by Pulitzer winners and newbies alike. The workshop’s director, Erica Spiller, won the first contest seven years ago with a script she wrote as a senior at Simpson College.

“I hadn’t planned for it to go any further. My mother spotted a note in the paper and made sure I submitted it,” she said. It turned out to be a smart move. “Having that play staged, seeing it live and getting the feedback from Tallgrass and the audience gave me the confidence to know that I really did have the ability to write, that I could pursue it further,” she said. She now has a master’s in English literature and teaches writing at Kaplan University. She’s seen a handful of playwriting projects emerge in the last few years. a conversation on one of the broad porches of the Pacific House Hotel in which Lincoln questioned Dodge, who made a case for Council Bluffs — later Lincoln’s choice for the railroad’s eastern terminus.

1860: Iowans help Lincoln win the presidency Josiah B. Grinnell of Grinnell and Hendrik Pieter Scholte of Pella were among the delegates who supported Lincoln at the Republican National Convention in Chicago. And Iowa Gov. Samuel Kirkwood of Iowa City, formerly of Ohio, is noted for having used his connections to win support away from rival Salmon P. Chase of Ohio. Scholte later wrote campaign endorsements for Lincoln and translated campaign materials into Dutch and German. He also attended the inauguration in Washington, D.C. Kirkwood was later Iowa’s war general under Lincoln.

7

1861: President Lincoln consults James Harlan, beginning a bond between the two families. Illinois native James Harlan moved to Iowa in 1843, serving as a teacher and lawyer before being named president of the Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute, now Iowa Wesleyan College. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1855, he became one of Lincoln’s trusted advisers, even escorting first lady Mary Lincoln at the second inauguration in 1865. Lincoln’s eldest son, Robert, escorted Senator Harlan’s daughter, Mary, to the inauguration ball.

Lincoln’s Iowa legacy continues Upon the news of Lincoln’s death on April 15, 1865, Iowans grieved in an outpouring that included public meetings where they openly wept. In Iowa City, a mile-long procession wound through the streets on April 19. The romance between Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, and Iowan Mary Eunice Harlan forged a lasting Iowa tie. The two married in 1868, and in the late 1870s and 1880s, brought their children to spend summers in the Mount Pleasant home built by Mary’s father. Artifacts there today include a section of the coat Lincoln was wearing at the time of his assassination and the mourning veil worn by Mary Todd Lincoln. Their three children’s heights in 1883 are still recorded on a doorway in the home, which can be visited by appointment with Lynn Ellsworth, executive director of Friends of the HarlanLincoln House, at 319-3856320 or iwcarch@iwc.edu.
