Iowa Wesleyan welcomes President Steve Titus and the Titus family
AUGUST 2013
Message from Iowa Wesleyan College’s President Dear friends of Iowa Wesleyan College: Let me begin by expressing my absolute delight and deep gratitude for the opportunity to join the Iowa Wesleyan College community. Being called to Iowa Wesleyan as its next president is one of the great privileges of my career. My wife, Sara, our daughters, Emma and Lily, and I are thrilled to be settling in to our new home, campus and community. The past three months have been a time of active and engaging transition. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, campus administrative team and faculty leadership have done impressive work in identifying the challenges and opportunities ahead for Iowa Wesleyan. With that foundation of understanding, we have begun to identify the immediate priorities for moving forward. The current strategic plan, with its focus on the academic program, enrollment and strengthened financial position, concludes next year and continues to serve as the basis for our work, even as we look ahead to developing the next strategic plan. We are building a leadership team with vision, experience and energy. In the coming months we will fill three key cabinet vacancies by hiring vice presidents for academic affairs, philanthropic engagement and enrollment management. These individuals will work with faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends to identify the opportunities for growth and the best strategies for achieving our goals. In the months ahead we will work together to imagine and create a vision that will move Iowa Wesleyan forward as it nears its 175th anniversary and beyond. Over the next year, I look forward to partnering with you to continue to enhance the quality of our academic program, to enroll and retain a strong student body, and to expand and diversify our resource base. There is much work to do. There always is in dynamic places like IWC. The question is: “Is it work worth doing?” For me, it is a resounding yes, which is why I have committed to walking with you in the journey ahead to grow IWC. The only way we can envision and realize our brightest future is with our collective talent, imagination and resources. Your support, engagement and commitment to Iowa Wesleyan is foundational to its success. I look forward to meeting you, hearing your thoughts, expectations and dreams for Iowa Wesleyan and working together to realize the great potential of this pioneering and historic College.

or Iowa Wesleyan’s new president, making the decision to accept the position had nothing to do with matching a job description with a skill set and personal goals. It was responding to a call. Dr. Steve Titus, elected in May as the 29th president of Iowa Wesleyan College, is a man of deep faith who knows that, “through the Holy Spirit we have been called to this work and to this place. Sara, our daughters, and I are absolutely delighted to have been called to Iowa Wesleyan College. It is a wonderful fit and incredible privilege to be invited to this very special place.”
Inspired to serve and lead
His journey to Iowa Wesleyan began, in many ways, when he was a college student. He began his college career at the University of Wyoming with his eye on the NFL. He soon learned that the success he enjoyed in high school as a student-athlete did not adequately prepare him for the demands and rigors of life as a college student-athlete. That reality, combined with a lack of focused priorities, was a wake-up call. “I am so deeply grateful for the mentors in my life,” Titus said. “Mentors who care enough to be honest with you are wonderful gifts.” He found such a mentor in Wyoming’s head strength coach. “Tom

and I both knew I didn’t have the talent for the NFL, but I was a hard worker,” Titus said. It was based on the mentor’s recommendation that Titus received a scholarship to transfer to Southwest Minnesota State University. “I will always be grateful to Tom for the chance he took on me,” said Titus. “When I arrived at SMSU, I was frightened and unsure of myself,” he said. “Then a remarkable thing happened. I began noticing that people really cared about who I was and held me accountable. Ultimately, I was surrounded by people who believed in me more than I believed in myself at a pivotal time, and that transformed me in ways I couldn’t even begin to imagine,” Titus said. “I am called to the important work of higher education because of that experience; because I was inspired by people like Tom Richardson and Randy Abbott,” he said. “I understood early on that I had been given an extraordinary gift, a second chance, and that I had a responsibility to contribute in deeper ways. I knew that I was being called to be a part of something that had the capacity to transform and affect human lives. Iowa Wesleyan College is a place of that capacity,” Titus said. Titus believes that Iowa Wesleyan is the kind of college that makes the same impact on lives. “Its
Committing to a stable and prosperous future
Titus brings a broad base of experience to the Iowa Wesleyan presidency. Most recently he served as senior vice president of university advancement at Saint Mary’s University, serving as chief development, alumni and external relations officer. He served five years as president of Midland Lutheran College, where he was one of the youngest college presidents in the country. Taking on the challenges of a struggling small college, he reorganized the college’s administrative structure around strategic priorities and resource development, led its financial turnaround, led efforts to improve the academic program and student recruitment process, added $17 million of new and renovated construction, significantly improved the college’s philanthropic engagement and completed the most comprehensive strategic planning effort in the institution’s history. Titus credits Iowa Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees and campus leadership with doing the foundational work to identify and understand the opportunities and challenges the College faces. “We can shape and execute credible, effective strategy as long as we are clear on what the issues are,” he said. “And we are.” The key issues at this time, he believes, are to stabilize enrollment and plan for growth, maximize gift income and philanthropic engagement, and ensure a strong resource base and balanced budgets. “This is the platform upon which we will build the Iowa Wesleyan future,” said Titus. Getting there will take leadership, commitment and resolve, which Titus describes as “everybody’s business.”
Kalen Henderson ’97
history and heritage tell us it is that kind of place,” he said. “It is a college of firsts, a pioneering college that embraces risk-taking and innovation.” He also believes that Iowa Wesleyan has just the right combination of characteristics to be successful in today’s competitive higher education environment. “Iowa Wesleyan has shown itself throughout its 171year history to be adaptive, resilient and bold. Those are exactly the qualities needed to succeed and thrive in the current higher education environment. The opportunity for growth is fabulous.”
“Leadership cannot be reduced to roles or reserved for a special few. To be successful in today’s environment, 100 percent of the people must be 100 percent responsible 100 percent of the time,” he said. “As president, my work is to enhance our collective capacity to create what matters most at Iowa Wesleyan: student learning and achievement and excellent academic programs. Everything else we do at Iowa Wesleyan supports these two ambitions. These are the practical and relevant features that build strong organizations, strong economies, strong communities, and strong citizens. I look forward to our collective work together in the years ahead.”

Writing festival, performances celebrate written word WordUp! Wesleyan has become an annual celebration of language and poetry on campus. At this spring’s festival, students in English classes presented poetry-based service-learning projects completed with community partners such as Park Place Elder Living, WisdomQuest and Grasshopper Green Preschool. Student organizations sponsored a number of activities to encourage linguistic creativity, including opportunities to write bad love poetry, compose six-word stories, invent word definitions and make poems based on photos, among other activities. An open mic poetry competition gave students a chance to share readings and original work. Poet Keith Ratzlaff, professor of English at Central College, helped judge the spoken word competition. He also offered a reading of his own poetry. Ratzlaff is the author of several books of poetry. His poems and reviews have appeared in Poetry Northwest, The Georgia Review, New England Review, The Threepenny Review, Colorado Review and North American Review. Students also presented readings from Design, the Iowa Wesleyan College literary magazine, this spring. Design includes poetry, prose and artwork contributed by students, Students shared their work in an informal staff and community members. Student project supports businesses in developing countries Iowa Wesleyan College students in Global Issues courses have supported the entrepreneurial efforts of small businesses in developing countries for the past four years. The students, taught by Brian Carter and Dr. Bitrus Gwamna, have taken part in a micro-lending program through Kiva. Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, to help alleviate poverty. The Kiva program combines microfinance with the Internet to create a global community of people connected through lending.
Iowa Wesleyan Global Issues classes have made 98 loans through Kiva, according to Carter. Last fall’s loans, totaling $1,050, set a record amount for the College class. Loans were made to individuals in Africa, Asia and Latin America, in amounts ranging from $50 to $150. Carter said the loans were made to deserving entrepreneurs including farmers and shop owners. Global Issues students offer shares for sale to the campus community. As loans are repaid, shares can be redeemed or funds can be rolled over into new loans. All loans have been repaid in full on time.
Efforts support clean water around the world Students in Dr. Cyndi Walljasper’s Positive Psychology class got first-hand knowledge of what it means to live on a limited amount of water. For five days, students rose early to collect their daily allotment of water, then carried it with them all day. The water challenge limited each student to just two and one-half gallons a day for eating, drinking, washing, cleaning dishes and doing laundry. Students kept a video diary of their experiences. In addition to teaching about the struggle of having adequate water that many in the world face, the project helped raise awareness on campus and in the community. The student video reflections were combined into a short documentary film, produced by the Iowa United Nations Association. This film, “2.5 Gallons,” had a free public showing at Main Street Cinema in Mount Pleasant and is available on You Tube. Students also conducted a fundraising campaign which resulted in a donation to Water Our Thirsty World to purchase a water chlorination device that will assist people who need access to clean water. They also donated to the Iowa United Nations Tap Project, which helps give local access to clean water for children around the world.

Stacy Ticknor Boudreau ’01 and Jerry Lange ’48 will be inducted into the Iowa Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend in October. Boudreau made her mark as a Tiger in both volleyball and track and field. As a player she set records for kills in a season and kills per game average. She still holds the IWC record for kills in a match and the season record for solo blocks. She was twice named to the Midwest Collegiate Conference Volleyball First Team and the NAIA Region VII Volleyball First Team. She was also named NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and NAIA ScholarAthlete All-American for volleyball. Boudreau earned NAIA All-American honors indoors in the pentathlon and outdoors in the heptathlon her senior year. She won five events in the league’s outdoor championship that spring. She was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Female Athlete of the Year for Track and Field in 2000 and 2001. Following graduation, Boudreau served as Iowa Wesleyan’s assistant volleyball coach in 2001 while teaching physical education for the local school district. The following year she was named head volleyball coach for the Tigers, a position she held for three seasons. She was named 2004 Midwest Collegiate Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year and NAIA Region VII Coach of the Year. She served as head women’s and men’s track coach for the Tigers from 2001-2004. She was the Midwest Classic Conference Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2003. Boudreau has been head volleyball coach at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater since 2005. She has guided UW-W to four WIAC conference postseason tournament titles and a national championship.
Gerald “Jerry” Lange ’48 enrolled at IWC in the fall of 1942, following a stand-out athletic career at New London High School, where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He was a four-time letter-winner and all-conference pick in both football and baseball. As a freshman at Iowa Wesleyan he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. His education was interrupted after one year by World War II. He enlisted and trained as a Naval aviator, serving from 1943-1945. Upon returning to campus in 1946, Lange resumed his Tiger athletic career on the football and baseball fields. He was a captain of both squads. But it was on the gridiron where he made his biggest mark. Despite losing most of the 1946 season due to a knee injury, Lange came back in 1947 as a top player in the Iowa Conference. He was all-Conference halfback, the leading scorer in the Conference and was named first team all-Iowa Conference. After graduation, Lange signed a contract with the Chicago Cardinals football team, where he was one of the last three players cut from the roster. The Cardinals traded him to the Detroit Lions. Lange returned to Mount Pleasant, remaining involved with the College and Phi Delta Theta. He coached football and men’s track in the early 1960s and served as assistant men’s basketball coach. Jerry was married for 51 years to Kay Olson Lange ’45. He died in 1998. His children, Todd Lange ’72 and Martha Lange Boesenberg ’73, will accept the award on his behalf. The Iowa Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame induction will take place on Friday, October 11, during a luncheon on campus. Heritage Club membership supports the future of Iowa Wesleyan The Heritage Club is made up of individuals who wish to guarantee the future of Iowa Wesleyan by including the College in their estate plans. They have named Iowa Wesleyan as a beneficiary in their wills, through an insurance policy or through some form of an annuity or trust. Their thoughtfulness and planning helps keep Iowa Wesleyan strong as it meets the needs of future generations and students. Planned gifts are very important to the College. Through a will or living trust, assets can be directed to Iowa Wesleyan College. A charitable bequest not only extends a lifetime commitment to the College, but also qualifies the estate for a deduction that reduces tax liability. Arrangements can be made to give a specific amount, property or a percentage of the estate. Alumni and friends who have listed Iowa Wesleyan College as a beneficiary in their estate plans should contact Dawn Dunnegan in the Office of Institutional Relations to be included in the Heritage Club. Knowing about estate gifts helps the College plan for the future and set long term goals. It also gives us the opportunity to properly honor those individuals with Heritage Club membership. For more information on the Heritage Club or how you can include Iowa Wesleyan College in your estate planning, contact Dawn Dunnegan, Development Officer, at 319-385-6238, or dawn.dunnegan@iwc.edu
Why I Joined the Heritage Club “I feel very fortunate to live in a community with a college. I think that there are wonderful benefits and opportunities that having a college presence provides.
