Dr. David Dodge awarded the 2011 IPAC Vanier Medal Ottawa, January 17, 2012 – Dr. David Dodge is the 2011 recipient of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada’s Vanier Medal, awarded today by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, during a ceremony at Rideau Hall. The Vanier Medal, created in 1962 in honour of Canada’s then-Governor General the Right Honourable GeorgesP. Vanier, is awarded by IPAC as its highest form of recognition to a person who has shown distinctive leadership and made significant contributions in public administration and to the public service in Canada. IPAC president Maria David-Evans said “David Dodge’s vision for our economy and his leadership and courage to speak truth to power have inspired public servants across Canada.” David Dodge was the Deputy Minister of Finance from 1992-1997, and served as Deputy Minister of Health from 1998-2001. His illustrious career as a public servant culminated in his distinguished stewardship as Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2001-2008. He was “one of Canada’s greatest public servants,” said former Prime Minister Paul Martin. Dr. Dodge’s fearless policy advice has always focused on the public interest. “His single most important contribution was his role in Canada’s fiscal turnaround, which continues to elicit global praise,” noted Dr. Anne Golden, President and CEO of the Conference Board. Dr. Dodge, now Chancellor of Queen’s University, has taught at Queen's, Johns Hopkins and at the University of British Columbia. In 2008 Dr. Dodge became an Officer of the Order of Canada and in 2009 a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He serves on several boards, including the C.D. Howe Institute, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, Canadian Utilities and the Bank of Nova Scotia. Dr. Dodge is Senior Advisor at Bennett Jones LLP in Ottawa.
