It also gives testimony to a strong staff, a passionate Board of Directors, and dedicated funders, sponsors and volunteers who help us not only deliver quality products and services but also measure impact. Looking forward, we will build on the momentum and numerous accomplishments of 2013. Financial Literacy Certification Our groundbreaking Financial Literacy Certification Program, now in its 10th year, helps teachers to prepare high school students with the skills for successful life-long financial decision-making. Upon completion of the program, students take our nationally standardized Financial Literacy Certification Test.

Measurement of Effectiveness Overall, the passing rate on our Certification Tests in 2012-2013 was 77.3%, 2.9% higher than the average 74.4% rate since the program was launched in 2003. At our annual MoneyPOWER Conference in November, we honored the 361 teachers and 194 schools who’d earned our coveted Gold Star and Blue Star teacher and school awards the previous school year.

Students who pass our Certification Test become Certified Financially Literate.

Praise from Students “After we graduate, we will have to start making some important financial decisions, such as taking out student loans, buying a car, and renting an apartment. Being financially literate will help me make smarter decisions about these issues and about even simpler things, such as choosing which bank to take out a credit card with. Melissa Alvarado Townsend Harris HS

Financial Literacy Certification Exciting New Initiatives

Financial Literacy Teacher Certification

To mark the 10th year anniversary of the Financial Literacy Certification Program, we created the 100 Best w!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance, the first national ranking of its type in the country.

Since 2008, w!se has offered high school teachers the opportunity to earn a Certification in Personal Finance by taking and passing our rigorous Certification in Personal Finance Test. The Test is generally administered in collaboration with partners, including Departments of Education, The Council for Economic Education, Business Educators Associations and The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.

The inaugural ranking was released during a spectacular ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange. Earning the top spot and taking home the coveted first-place trophy was the High School for Math, Science & Engineering at City College, New York City. Others ranked in the top 25 were schools from Utah, Indiana, Tennessee, Nebraska, Virginia, New Jersey, Illinois, South Carolina, and New York. For the list of schools, please visit http://www.wise-ny.org/documents/w!se_ Announces_list_of_100_Best_w!se_ High _Schools.pdf

In 2012-13, we added Tennessee, North Carolina and New York to the states in which this unique credential is offered. W!se Ideas for the Classroom Another first for this year was the launch of W!se Ideas for the Classroom, a personal finance blog that features a discussion forum and weekly news updates about personal finance for teachers in our national network. The blog can be found at www.wiseideasfortheclassroom.com.

More than 100 guests attended the ceremony, hosted by Michelle Greene, Executive Director of the NYSE Euronext Foundation. Featured speakers included Sam Stovall, Chief Investment Strategist, Standard & Poor’s Equity Research; Pat Kiernan, Morning Anchor, NY1; Judy Chapa, Vice President, Financial Services Roundtable; and Judy Sams, Program Specialist, Business and Information Technology, Virginia Department of Education.

W!se Testing App Schools were pleased with the announcement that our Pretests and our Certification Test are now available through an app on Chrome Books and iPad/iPad Mini tablets.

MoneyW!SE and Speakers Bureau MoneyW!SE Program for Survivors of Domestic Violence

Speakers’ Bureau

This innovation in financial education offers survivors of domestic violence, many of whom face economic as well as physical abuse before leaving a violent relationship, a pathway toward financial independence.

w!se continues to manage the Speakers’ Bureau, launched in 2009, as part of The McGraw-Hill Companies’ Financial Literacy Now campaign.

Through MoneyW!SE, we offer survivors a semester long course on personal finance in the fall and spring every year and an opportunity for class participants to become Certified Financially Literate, if they pass our MoneyW!SE Certification Test. The program is delivered in New York City at Family Justice Centers in Brooklyn, Queen and The Bronx, run by the New York City Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence and at the Family Justice Center in Salt Lake City managed by the YWCA.

This exciting program leverages the expertise of our volunteers to enhance classroom instruction on personal finance. We also organize tours for students at leading companies and organizations on Wall Street. The Program’s guest speakers visit various high schools to provide insight into a variety of financial issues, both broad and narrow. Topics include general macroeconomics and personal finance concepts, such as managing credit, college financial planning, and personal investing. In 2013, more than 80 executives from the financial industry volunteered their time to visit 66 high schools to address 4,295 students on a variety of topics essential to their financial education.

In 2012-13, we continued the program’s geographic expansion by launching it at the YWCA in San Diego. During the year, all the classroom presentation materials were also translated into Spanish to encourage more Spanish speaking survivors (more than 30% of all DV survivors in New York City) to participate in the program.

Quality of Life INNOVATIONS The Quality of Life Program (QL) develops college readiness in high school students through a project-based educational challenge. QL students learn how they can make a difference in their communities by researching, then creating and presenting feasible solutions to real-world problems. 704 students from 20 schools participated in our 2013 Competition. The First Place $4,000 college scholarship went to New York Batteries Can Be Hazardous to our Health, a proposal on the improper disposal of 180 tons of batteries each year and the harm caused to the environment and inhabitants written by a student from Sheepshead Bay High School.

Making a Difference! A new Youth Leadership Committee and a Teachers Advisory Council were organized to gather input and advice directly from the end users. The enthusiastic Youth Leadership Committee, for example, outlined their wish list to improve services and information for QLI participants.

“We were not familiar with statistical analysis or how to use Microsoft Exel to map out results from a survey. We now know how to do data analysis, map survey results and, draw cross correlations, create charts and graphs and analyze data more efficiently” –Courtney Utsey, Najac yler, QLI Students “I learned how to email professionals and improved my research and writing skills. I also got involved in doing volunteer work at human rights organizations like Amnesty International” – Merry Wu, QLI student.” “QLI has prepared us for college and our personal lives. QLI taught us to be aware of our surroundings. We are now prepared to do research, interviewing, observing, note taking, formatting our papers -- all needed for college.” –Ramanjit Toor, Stephanie Seelall Supreen Kaur, QLI students

w!se Institute for Lifelong Learning The High School of Economics & Finance (HSEAF) was established in 1993 by founder Phyllis Frankfort. Located in the heart of Wall Street, the school provides students with a rigorous academic program in economics and finance. W!se developed and manages the w!se Institute that we currently offer at one site, HSEAF, to keep this public school unique. The Institute is designed to reinforce or enhance instruction, provide real world role models, variety in the school week, address student needs, support the school’s mission, and prepare students for college and careers. The institute features more than 100 seminars each year.

During 2012-2013, among the new seminars the W!se Institute offered were:  Modern Finance  Public Speaking and You  Building Blocks of Financial Freedom  Game Theory  Turning a Hobby into a Business  Math and Science Skills

Seminar Offering There were 253 volunteers from the private and independent sectors leading the seminars that addressed topics on economics and finance, entrepreneurship, arts and humanities, law and communications, and career and life skills.

Student Placements The Institute also places students on two work experiences each year. Through these external opportunities, students learn to apply their skills and knowledge from the classroom to real world scenarios and to explore future career possibilities. Students received offers for 100 community service and for 99 unpaid internship placement opportunities.

“…Thank you for the incredible opportunities you provided for me through the seminars and work experiences. I feel I have an edge over my peers. Your encouragement, also, to complete my unpaid internship was the best thing that ever happened to me. I now have a slew of internship opportunities because of how impressed people are with my resume…I would just like to express my gratitude.”

2013 Partnerships Teachers College at Columbia University

Financial Services Roundtable

w!se launched an exciting new teacher training initiative in 2013: We partnered with Teachers College at Columbia University to offer the first Teachers College Cowin Personal Finance Summer Institute, a unique professional development opportunity for high school teachers from New York City. Sponsored by Joyce Cowin, a leading philanthropist and Teachers College Trustee, the Institute is designed to build teachers’ knowledge of personal finance and related instructional strategies using the case method approach. At the end of the Institute, participants had an opportunity to earn w!se’s Certification in Personal Finance; 93% earned this coveted credential.

w!se is one of only 15 national non-profit Financial Services Roundtable partners.

A second Institute for New York City teachers is planned for the summer of 2014. The goal is to expand nationally in 2015.

As in past years, we supported several of FSR’s community service initiatives, notably as a member of the Community Service Leadership Award Committee and of the FSR Scholarship Foundation’s Financial Literacy Scholarship Review Committee. Elementary School Pilot in NYC Financial education is increasingly being introduced in the earlier grades. We, therefore, welcomed the opportunity to pilot a new program at an East Harlem Elementary School in partnership with the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College. Drawing on a fun cartoonbased learning tool, Cha-Ching, developed for students in Japan, teachers delivered a module on personal finance. We trained the teachers and developed an assessment to gauge knowledge post instruction. Celebrating our Volunteers

We thanked our network of more than 500 partners and volunteers at a breakfast hosted by Citi in February. Students, teachers, board members, partners and volunteers gave heartfelt testimony to their personal experience and the many ways in which they support w!se and it’s programs.

Praise from Teachers “I have been to a lot of Professional Development in the Economics area, and this Institute is, by far, the best one I have ever attended.” Clarissa Bushman Stuyvesant HS
