re you easily spooked? If you are one to check every nook and cranny of your home after hearing a strange noise, do not feel alone. CBS research shows that nearly half of Americans, 48 percent to be exact, believe in ghosts. And about half of that 48 percent claimed to have experienced the actions of a supernatural being in their life. Simply said, one-fifth of Americans believe they have seen or felt a ghost presence at some point in their life.

A

The sentiment appears to be shared among IPFW students. A majority of those interviewed expressed a strong belief in, if not a specific being, some sort of a supernatural force that is outside of human control. “It is ridiculous not to believe in ghosts, demons, aliens, call them what you wish, but there definitely has to be

something out there”, claims Dillon, a junior majoring in Chemistry. W i t h Ha l l ow e e n approaching, the abundance of horror movies seems to give everyone plenty of material for discussion of the occult. For the residents of IPFW Student Housing, however, these may not be just stories. Rumor has it the fourth floor of the building H is haunted. “I’ve heard stories, but I never paid much attention,” JaRika SPOOKY SPACES: Page 2 ►

►SPOOKY SPACES From Page 1 Smith, a current fourth floor resident said. “But then just before I moved in, I found out my roommates decided not to move in the apartment.” Even though the specific apartment has never been named, there have been several complaints about the fourth floor. Smith herself stated she noticed peculiar creaking in the middle of the night. “The worst was when I noticed the door was open, just a crack, and I am very careful about shutting it. I would never sleep with an open door, out of habit. I wouldn’t have left it like that,” she said. But she is not the only one who has heard strange things about the H building. Michael, a communication senior, currently lives at the Canterbury Green Apartments, but was a resident of building F during his junior year. He recalls an incident that happened during Upward Bound, a program that brings high school students to college campuses in order to help them experience and prepare for college life. “My friend who was an RA in the program told me about this boy from South Bend who had to change rooms during program because he kept waking up in the middle of the night because of the strange noises. To him, it sounded like someone was screaming.”

To most though, the stories are just there for fun. “We always get together and tell scary stories at night. Nobody really believes in them though, but it’s still entertaining”, said Jessie, another student housing resident. And with all the campus security and cameras keeping a watchful eye on the safety of everyone on campus, the only spirits you come by will probably be behind a TV screen. So, go ahead, get your friends together to see Paranormal Activity. Just don’t actually go and buy a Ouija board - you never know what may end up happening.

Costume ideas for Halloween 2010 Tegan Wilkinson

College News Network Once people hit the teenage years, Halloween is no longer about fun, candy and dressing up in funny and appropriate costumes. Teen girls start dressing up as “slutty” as their parents can stand and boys walk around in t-shirts saying “This is my costume.” There’s no point in dressing or acting super promiscuous for one day out of the year. Those photos that will inevitably get posted on Facebook.com from the previous night might ruin future employment opportunities or cause drama among friends. This year, let’s vow to start celebrating Halloween the way we used to by making it all about fun and candy! The following are alternate Halloween costume ideas that you can wear to parties, or even out trick-or-treating if you’d like. They are meant to be funny and creative, not offensive and provocative, but use them however you want. Crayola Crayons: Everyone remembers coloring worksheets in elementary school. Why not commemorate that time by dressing up as a box of Crayola’s? You could either wear a solid colored leotard with matching colored tights or even a solid colored t-shirt or tank top with matching shorts and leggings or tights. You can also make crayon wrappers and pointy hats with construction paper or poster board to complete

the look. Rubik’s Cube: You could either find a huge box to create your cube or buy six pieces of poster board to tape together and create a box; just paint the sides to look like a completed Rubik’s Cube. You can find tons of other Halloween costume ideas by doing a Google search or just asking other people what they’ve done. The guy from the Old Spice commercials: This is by far the easiest costume to create. All you need is a towel and something to wear under the towel. Putting some shorts on in case a “friend” tries to rip your costume away would be

“You can find tons of other Halloween costume ideas by doing a Google search or just asking other people...” wise. Maybe carry around a can of Old Spice too in case people don’t understand. Jersey Shore: A group of three (or four) girls could dress up as the Jersey Shore girls: “Snooki,” Sammi “Sweetheart,” “JWoww,” and even “Jolie” if you have fourth person. If you’re not naturally tan, go out and buy some fake tan lotion or bronzer to darken your skin. You’ll also need a long, black wig to wear. Don’t forget to add your pouf! Fake nails and heels are also a must to complete the look. Guys can also look like the Jersey Shore guys. “The Situation” is one of the easiest looks to pull off all you need are some shorts, a t-shirt, hair

grease and self-tanner. If you’re confident enough, you can walk around without the t-shirt. Just remember to use some self-tanner on your abs to make them appear more contoured and tan. If you’re not so confident or just don’t want to freeze on Halloween, you can find a six-pack costume at Target, Wal-Mart or anywhere else they sell costumes. You could even write “It’s T-shirt time!” on the front of your tee. Remember to use lots of hair grease or even temporarily dye your hair black to match the characters. However, dressing up like the Jersey Shore cast doesn’t mean you have to be slutty! You can still look like the characters while showing less skin than they do. Try a boyfriend tank instead of a low-cut tank or Soffe shorts instead of Snooki’s booty shorts. Lady Gaga: This costume will easily be one of the most popular for everyone and one of the easiest to create. Anything outrageous that Lady Gaga has worn over the years will do. From her “Meat Dress” to “Little Red Riding Hood,” you can do just about anything shocking to resemble Lady Gaga. But whatever you plan on being for Halloween, be sure to be safe. It is important to travel in groups and don’t drink and drive.

COLLEGE DROPOUTS

COST TAXPAYERS BILLION$ Jenna West, The Daily Titan

Dropping out of college not only affects a student’s finances and future, but it also costs tax payers billions of dollars. As reported by the Associated Press, between 2003 and 2008 universities and four year colleges received $6.2 billion by their state to compensate for the education of those students who did not return to their second year of college. Also, $1.5 billion in grants were issued to these students by the federal government. It is estimated that 40 percent of college students will leave higher education without getting a degree, with 75 percent of these students leaving within their first two years of college according to an article by StateUniveristy.com. With the economy still stuck in a recession, dropout rates could continue to climb if students cannot afford their education. In turn, taxes will continue to grow, making it even more difficult to save money.

taxes are applied. “I would not draw a direct correlation between college dropouts and taxes. The purpose of publicly supported institutions is to provide access to education,” Mead said. “If one accepts that public schools are important and desirable, then taxes to pay for those institutions are inevitable.” A number of students who dropped out had received grants from the government. To some it is seen as a waste of money. With the recent agreement on state budget cuts, these statistics could set back government decisions. In California, non-returning first year students at public colleges accounted for about $425 million in state appropriations and $41.7 million were given in state grants to students who studied for five years according to an Los Angeles Times article. When asked if he felt college dropouts would have an affect on taxes, 28-year-old

Criminal justice major Garrett Kiehl, 21, has friends who have gone to college but made the choice to not return to their next semester. He feels they are not the only ones who are missing out on a college education. “Regardless of the reason, college isn’t for everyone,” Kiehl said. “But I feel those who don’t complete college affect freshman and transfer students’ opportunities at getting an education as well as causing taxes to go up.” Some people, however, feel that college dropout numbers and increases in taxes do not have a direct correlation to each other. Cal State Fullerton economics professor Richard Mead said that when there is any form of expanding an institution, the proper

Kurt Boyd asked ,“Why would it?” “If we all dropped out and didn’t have a college we would save tax money,” Kurt said who is currently working on his master’s at CSUF. Whether it is the university system, the recession, or the access to federal grants, facts show that many students do not complete a college education. “The point here is that there are a number of factors at play which prevent degree completion. While one can debate whether the level of dropouts or failure to complete is too high, I am not sure that it is realistic to expect completion rates beyond a certain level,” Mead said.

here are several political, social, and economic issues of public debate that make November a crucial and muchanticipated election. On the west coast, California’s Proposition 19 is at the forefront as one such issue. Proposition 19 is the legalization of cannabis to control and tax marijuana in California– a state with such a large debt that last year, for a brief time, it could not even afford to pay its employees. Today, hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars are wasted enforcing a failed prohibition of cannabis. As it currently stands, cannabis –or marijuana– is easier for minors to acquire than is alcohol. Prohibition has created a violent market of criminal activity associated with gangs and drug cartels. While dangerous criminal activity is being perpetrated, police continue to waste valuable resources to target non-violent consumers of cannabis. Today, there is approximately $14 billion spent on marijuana in California alone– yet instead of controlling the market and collecting tax revenue, the state has continued to spend tax money in a failed effort to eliminate the market. Proposition 19 would allow cannabis to be controlled in a manner very similar to alcohol, allowing adults 21 and over in the state to posses up to one ounce to be consumed at home or in designated establishments. It would also better prioritize the time of our police forces– fighting violent crimes and saving potentially millions of dollars a year. By taxing marijuana sales, it is estimated that the state could generate billions in annual revenue which could be put to use funding matters that are much more important than arresting non-violent marijuana smokers– matters such as creating jobs, building roads, and providing public safety where it is needed most. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Let us be honest: marijuana laws and enforcement have failed. It is time to try something new.

In the Beginning: The Creation Museum Presents a Different Point of View Louisa Danielson

It is part museum, part apologetics, and all familyfriendly. Welcome to the Creation Museum, located just west of Cincinnati, near Petersburg, Kentucky. The Creation Museum, which was established in 2007, features live exhibits, videos, a planetarium, and lots of dialogue boards to read. The purpose of the museum is to provide an explanation of history and science that is based on the Biblical creation, instead of Darwin’s evolution-centered point of view. And on Saturday, October 9, the museum parking lot was already getting full before noon. According to the ticket attendant, the museum hosts about 1,500 guests on a typical Saturday. The walls of the entry foyer to the Creation Museum look like rock. Giant, tinted windows let in sunshine as people wait in line to get their passes. Security is tight–extra-large baggage is inspected before it gets inside the museum. The main entry hall is full of open-water fish tanks, live turtles, animatronic dinosaurs, and glass tanks containing colorful frogs and other animals. An elephantine skeleton is in the middle of the foyer, looking over the ice cream stand. Over in the corner, a curator comes out with a live reptile for guests to touch–or hold–if they dare. To reach the first exhibit room, visitors pass through a winding passage that looks like the Grand Canyon. In the middle of the room, two mannequin archaeologists are working on a dig. Televisions around the room discuss the creationist point of view versus evolutionary theory, explaining “We come to different conclusions because of our different starting points.” A discussion of those different starting points comes with the human-sized dioramas. In one room,

VACATIONS Fall for Brown Matt Lash

Fall break has passed, but winter break is on the way. Now is the perfect time to plan all sorts of vacations, whether you are looking for one big party, or a relaxing beach trip. Recently, on a trip to Southern Indiana, I achieved both. My family rented out a house that was secluded, yet close to the action in Nashville, Indiana. This house was reached via a gravel road and had a rather neat nickname, Hearthstone. The grounds were fully forested and not visible from any of the surrounding houses. The house was both pet friendly and had a Hot tub. The house had a full kitchen, pool table, satellite television, and many other amenities. This specific cabin was located 15 minutes from a bustling town, 5 minutes from one sate forest, and 10 minutes from another. Hiking is available at these parks as well as boating and horseback riding. There isn’t a beach but it is relaxing none the less.

Adam and Eve are sitting in the Garden of Eden, surrounded by plants and strange animals, depicting the perfection of the originally-created world. Other displays show the fall of man, the deterioration of

scoffers. Different theaters at the Museum present several films and a planetarium show. Created Cosmos, the planetarium program, discusses nebulae, ‘Hot Jupiters,’ and star clusters. At the program Dinosaurs and Dragon Legends, the story of St. George and the Dragon is re-enacted and the leviathan and behemoth are discussed from the book of Job. For the special-effects presentation Men in White, seats rumble and water squirts as angels Gabe and Mike talk about how a creation-based perspective gives people hope and a sense of purpose in life. In addition to the exhibits, there is a large gift shop, several food venues, a nature trail, a lake, and a petting zoo. In Noah’s Café, patrons can purchase salads, soup, sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza sticks and a variety of juices. An indoor/outdoor eating terrace overlooks the nature trail and gardens. For people who are interested in visiting the Creation Museum, it should be noted that the primary focus of this museum is on discussion, rather than on a plethora of specimens. While there are dinosaur eggs, a mineral collection, and dinosaur bones on display, the more interesting displays explore society and the connection of facts through history. But the entire museum is state-of-the-art. Think of it as blending Disney World animated displays The Creation Museum with discussion plaques on the caliber of the Photo by Louisa Danielson Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. the world (dinosaurs chasing prey), and the Flood. The Creation Museum is definitely an interesting The diorama with Noah building the Ark is extremely place to explore and ponder the quandaries of life. detailed, complete with tall scaffolding and grumbling

There is more than just relaxing in this diverse county. The roads in this region of Indiana are among the curviest, which makes it a hot spot for bikers of all types. The nearest town of Nashville has a very dominate tourist drive. In town there are many, many shops, ranging from the eclectic to the utilitarian. This town is the capital of the Indiana wine country. There are three wineries within the city limits allowing a large variety of wine to “taste test” for free. These wineries make good location for meeting up after a long day of activities. Husbands can bike, or hike all day while their wives shop, then they can both meet up at the winery for a nice romantic evening. There are nice restaurants, or old school drinking pubs, even country music dance halls for the ambitious. Any way you look at it, this rustic city and county have a lot to offer any group of people.

The Unstoppable Parade of

3D Entertainment

Watching is turning into “Experiencing” Lindsay Sprunger

Who was not awed by the staggering visual masterwork that was Avatar 3D, or did not flinch when bugs swarmed from Bradley Cooper’s jaws and into the audience during the horror film Case 39? There is something to be said for the new adventures that the rush of 3D movies have given us; that extra adrenaline boost, or even just a moment of captivating beauty that envelops the viewer from beyond the boundaries of a traditional screen. That being said, is this 3D craze such a wonderful thing? What is the matter with the 2D tales that we used to know? Are our imaginations so worn out that the only way to get that entrancing feeling of being at the movies is to have the action inches from our noses? The number of films coming out in 3D is certainly impressive. Audiences are consuming the new technology voraciously, demanding ever more detail, more explosions, more of a realistic experience… I wonder when smell-o-vision will be back on the table; you know, so the audience can sniff the flowers from Alice in Wonderland or breathe in the thick, iron-dense scent of guts from Piranha 3D. It would just give the film that extra kick and likely ruin the taste of popcorn, good news for America’s obesity problem. Then again, that nauseous feeling is already an all too real sensation resulting from watching these eye-popping films. There is a significant population of moviegoers, young and old, who are nearly incapable of enjoying 3D as it

makes them dizzy or even physically ill. The fast motion scenes and extra special effects that usually accompany today’s movies have been testing the eyes for years, almost daring us to keep up. Now in 3D, as the camera swoops over and under, in and out, up and around, dodging obstacles this way and that, the whole thing has proven to be just too much for some. It is increasingly apparent that almost all action films being released require the ability of being viewed in 3D if they want to remain competitive in the industry, and this is undoubtedly so if they intend to be blockbusters. It is disappointing and even distracting to watch a movie in two dimensions that was specifically meant to be seen in three. Not only does the story usually suffer on these films (a symptom that can be forgiven with the distraction of 3D excellence), but the cinematography concentrates on settings and scenes in which things can be hurled into the audience or else pop out of the screen. 3D television is also becoming increasingly available and affordable as networks scramble to provide content for the growing demand. I do not think I really want to see Dwight Schrute’s face inches from my own when I watch The Office. Being able to basically count the pores on the nose of Glee’s Sue Sylvester after networks went hidef was damaging enough. It appears that entertainment in three dimensions is here to stay. The hope is that development of quality storylines and utilization of gifted actors are not neglected for the sake of a more technologically and visually orgasmic experience for the American moviegoer.

here is a certain sense of accomplishment that many people can relate to when they complete a puzzle. Whether that puzzle is completed by finally thinking of an eightletter word for a comedian’s former television show, getting X and Y on separate sides of an equal sign, or circling the differences in photos, the result is typically level with childhood dreams coming true. On that note, a popular puzzle many people completed as a child was a treasure hunt. Finding random items, places, or people—among other clever tasks—and checking them off, a list before others finish their list: pure, unadulterated fun. Now, each of the puzzles mentioned have short time spans. Fortunately, a relatively new business, Secret Fort Wayne, decided to let that joy last awhile. Created in March 2010 by IPFW student George Turkette, Secret Fort Wayne’s main goal is to create citywide knowledge of local businesses. “There are many places throughout the city that many people do not know about. With Fort Wayne

being so big, people often are asking ‘what should I do today?’ I want to help people with that question as well as help local business owners get their name out there,” Turkette said, adding that Secret Fort Wayne is mainly “here for the people … to participate, discover and connect.” Secretfortwayne. com and the Facebook page dedicated to it contain countless “secrets” that area residents have submitted for sharing. The website is really calling for participation now, though, with a little map icon in the left-hand corner. A treasure hunt that will last three months— Nov. 22 to Feb. 22—is giving away over six thousand dollars in cash and prizes, “from Apple iPods to gift certificates,” including a one thousand dollar prize provided by Secret Fort Wayne, according to the web site. The hunt will include a bingo-like sheet with numbers, which can be picked up at any of the participating businesses, and those playing simply have to visit the businesses and get them to stamp off their related number. Those who get a line filled out— also like bingo—may attend “giveaway events” at local merchants where they can claim prizes. “Currently, we are fast approaching … 1,000 people registered to participate in the treasure hunt,” Turkette said. Those wanting to give the hunt a try may register on secretfortwayne.com.

A Movie With Flavor Last week, I took the only three dollars I had in my pocket and made my way to the “Dollar Theatre” to see the movie “Salt.” I had extremely high expectations for this movie; I mean, come on, it has Angelina Jolie. She has to be one of the most badass actresses of all time, and this movie remains true to that image. It lived up to almost all of my expectations: action packed, seductive, and emotional. The movie follows a United States C.I.A. agent named Evelyn Salt across her journey over a period of weeks. The movie starts dark— in a foreign country—and extremely violently. Salt, as she is commonly called, has been captured by the North Koreans and is being tortured for information. The movie progresses quickly, and keeps you engaged at all times. It kept me in my seat so much I couldn’t even go get a refill on my $6.50 Coke. The whole premise of the movie seems to change as the movie goes on. First, you think Salt is a double agent and then you suspect she is working for the U.S. This is the major appeal of this movie; you never really know what side she is on until the very end. The action and fighting scenes in this movie are superb, and the acting is spot on, but the major flaw of “Salt” is its predictability. You are unsurprised by all the major events of the movie. Maybe there is a little too much foreshadowing on the directors part. “Salt” is worth every penny to see though, especially when you are only paying three dollars. If you have a chance, check it out. It is action filled, has a great plot, and tends to make you feel smarter when you figure out what they are going to do before they do it. “Salt” gets an A- in my book. Now go out and give it your own grade! Movie poster courtesy of celebritybuzz.com

BLACK TAXI DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO

►When it comes to bands, I usually stick to The Strokes, The Black Keys, and N.E.R.D. These guys almost have a slight mix of all three. Not too many bands are doing anything new out there but Black Taxi combines influences to create some very good music.

NAKIA HENRY - SMILE ►A southern, jazzy style of singing. That is really all I can say because this song is all a cappella. Still, take a listen. You will not be disappointed.

►A beautiful organ intro followed by an upbeat piano melody. This

British band is a new group that Rza, co-founder of the Wu-Tang Clan, has decided to work with. It is very good. The outro adds some triumphant strings to bring it all the way home.

N.E.R.D. - NOTHING ON YOU ►I think we can always expect some

danceable, funky music with Pharrell serenading the ladies. While I love this song, I am hoping their new CD, Nothing, does not mean we are getting nothing new from these guys.

BEST COAST WHEN I'M WITH YOU

►Trends seem to move in cycles. I know I have a love/hate relationship with most indie bands but it is only because sometimes they try to go so far left that they do a complete turn around and come from the right. The Drums and Best Coast are kind of leading this new trend of updated Beach Boys music. Pretty soon there will be countless bands popping up which sound just like them. These guys still win though, because they have ‘best’ in their name.

ELIZA DOOLITTLE SKINNY GENES

►While she sounds sweet and cute, this song is raunchy. I just love it because it is so catchy. I love songs with whistling in it. All I know is this girl needs to put aside those early 60s records she was obviously influenced by and put on some gospel. My goodness.

MEMORYHOUSE - LATELY ►Calm and relaxing. Slow and serene. Beautiful vocals with a timid energy. Do not get me wrong, I love this song, but just as an observation, I find it funny how a few words can turn ‘boring’ into something way more meaningful.

here is a certain sense of accomplishment that many people can relate to when they complete a puzzle.

On Saturday, October 23, the IPFW women’s tennis team ended their fall season of play in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the ITA Midwest Regional. Two Lady Dons, Ingrid Ballus and Amy Recht, fell short in the first rounds of the singles competition on day one. The competition as a whole remains in contest until the final day of play on Tuesday October 26 at the University of Michigan.

Following her advancement to the first round of the regional contest, IPFW senior Ingrid Ballus played junior Stacey Lee of Northwestern University. Ballus faced tough competition as she lost in straight sets to NU’s Lee in 6-3, 6-2. However, Ballus progressed to the consolation round where she faced Wisconsin redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich with a 6-4, 6-0 victory. IPFW senior Amy Recht also proceeded to regional play on Saturday, where she necessarily qualified to play in the main draw.

“What You Missed” Logan Pea

Does anybody remember the beginning of the season where Chad Ochocinco was quoted saying, “If we don’t win a Super Bowl this season, I don’t know who could with who we have”? Well, the season is 1/3 of the way over, and the Bengals are sitting on a 2-4 record after losing on the road to Atlanta. The Titans now hold the best record in the AFC South thanks to a huge blowout at home against Kevin Kolb and the Eagles. Sticking in the AFC South, the Colts had a bye this week, which is probably good considering Indianapolis has lost pro-bowl tight end Dallas Clark for the season due to wrist surgery and slot receiver Austin Collie

for at least three weeks. The Chicago Bears downfall continues after Jay Culter threw four interceptions to the same Washington Redskin en route to a 17-14 home loss at Soldier Field. Ben Roethlisberger threw for over three hundred yards and also checked in for two touchdowns as the Steelers won by one point in South Beach. The Oakland Raiders scored fifty-nine points on the road against Denver to demolish the Broncos 5914. For the third week in a row, the number one team in college football has gone down. Oklahoma made mistakes down the stretch to lose a tough one on the road to Missouri. Auburn, Oregon, and Boise State now hold the top three positions in the country, with each team holding good arguments as to why

they should be number one. Andrew Luck, Stanford University’s talented quarterback, is back atop the Heisman watch after Luck led the Cardinal past Washington State 3828. Irish fans’ guts are still turned over after giving up thirty-five points to Navy on Saturday. The Midshipmen sunk Notre Dame for the third time in four years. The World Series is set. Alex Rodriguez struck out in Texas to give the Rangers the final out they needed to advance to their first World Series in franchise history. The Giants also ended the Phillies season at home to send them to their first World Series in a very long time. Game one is expected to be started by Giants Tim Lincicum, as the Rangers will more than likely counter with Cy Young favorite Cliff Lee.

One Goal Not Enough for Men’s Soccer Logan Pea

One of the most commonly employed strategies used by coaches goes something like, “One goal isn’t enough! We have to bury them! Just one goal won’t keep them away!” This was never as true as it was on Saturday, October 23 in Kansas City, Missouri. For UMKC, just one guy was enough. The Kangaroos John Bayron Sosa recorded a hat trick on IPFW. Sosa’s three goals were more than enough to stave off Max Touloute and the rest of the men’s soccer team. UMKC dropped IPFW like a bad habit in the second half. The only bright spot in the match for IPFW came when it was already way

too late. In the 76th minute, IPFW’s Danny Ly scored his first goal of his IPFW career. Not only did Ly net his first goal of many, he avoided the always embarrassing shutout on the road. The fourth remaining goal came from UMKC’s Jimmy Simon. Simon and the rest of those pesky kangaroos are now 9-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference. UMKC is riding high heading into the season’s end, as IPFW is still looking to play their best soccer. The Dons are 2-12-1 overall and have not won a conference game all season. IPFW hits the road for the final road game at Centenary College on October 30, then returns home for senior day and the senior wrap-up November 6 against Oral Roberts University.

As of today, the Summit League belongs to the Women’s Volleyball team. So does the month of October. For the tenth time in as many games, IPFW has come out on top bringing their overall record to 17-8 and 11-2 in the conference. Looking for the late season surge and a place in the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year, IPFW made the trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma looking for their first win ever at Oral Roberts. The Dons rolled into Tulsa ready to play, but the match started off slower than they wanted. In each set, the Dons found themselves having to rally from behind to turn it into something exciting. Without a

doubt, the match turned into something exciting each set. Aside from the third set, which Oral Roberts won 17-25, each of the other sets were decided by seven total points. Thanks to the energy brought by sophomore Tessa McGill and her sixteen digs, IPFW took the tight match 26-24, 25-22, 17-25, and 28-26. Just a couple of points here and there, and the Dons could have ended up on the other end of this one. After the Oral Roberts match, the women’s volleyball team now has only five remaining matches, with only two of them at home. On November 5 and November 6, IPFW will play host to Western Illinois and IUPUI for senior night. The Dons need the Gates Center packed as they look to round out the regular season as Summit League Champions.

student issues

Parking Angst Preston Patillo

I’m sitting on the third floor of the parking garage closest to Kettler on a Thursday afternoon. I got to campus an hour before my class is scheduled to start. Thirty minutes and one garage later I am still looking for a spot. Traffic in this garage is at a standstill. That is when I decided to grab my laptop and start my op-ed career by writing this piece. Every student knows this pain, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As a senior I know that these two magical days are notoriously the worst days for parking on campus. That is exactly why I give myself enough time, particularly for classes that start midday. However, this year it is by far the worst. Don’t worry though; I have a few solutions that should be enacted immediately to try to alleviate this

parking madness. The first solution is pretty easy: Students that live in on-campus housing should NEVER be allowed to drive over. I don’t care what the weather or circumstances are. Take the U.S. Postal code of “Neither snow nor rain nor heat…” and trudge through it. They have

“The first solution is pretty easy: Students that live in oncampus housing should Never be allowed to drive over.” a bus that runs frequently back and forth through campus. It may require a little preplanning but I’m sure it will be less than my hour buffer. This irritates me so much. They should be ticketed—or allow me to park in their spots and I’ll walk over. The motorcycle situation (that will end soon and those people will

drive) is similar. It is annoying to creep upon a spot that appears empty but, when examined further, is filled with a motorcycle. There are multiple designated motorcycle spots inside garages and open lots. For a motorcycle to be parked in a reserved spot is like a handicapped car parking in the back. The second solution would be to stop scheduling special events on the days in question. Frequently the university has job fairs, lectures, etc. on those days. While it is great that the university wishes to expand its offering to its community, is it not counter-intuitive to plan these events during the day when students are in class and adults are at work? Here’s a crazy idea: Why not move these events to Friday or Saturday when nobody is there? Just the other day, parking was blocked off to accommodate an event. This is simply unacceptable when parking is so scarce. An issue that is coupled with this is the density of classes on these two days. The classes should have a better spread through the week to disperse the parking situation. Parking: Jump to page 12

Dropbox: The Easy Way to Sync and Share Files Craig Lloyd

Dropbox is a freeware application that automatically syncs files over multiple computers and allows you to easily share files with other users. This is a dream, if you have multiple computers in your household, or if you share files constantly with your friends. The thing that makes Dropbox unique from other syncing and sharing services is the ability to simply drag and drop files into the Dropbox folder on your computer and have them instantly be available to any computer that you give permission to access them. Any file that you put inside the Dropbox folder will automatically be synced and monitored for changes, so each time a change is saved, it backs up and syncs the file again. Best-of-all, Dropbox works with Windows, Mac, and Linux, so you can share files easily across different OS platforms. They also have mobile apps for the iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry available for free.

This quick tutorial will show you how to get started using this extremely simple application and what features are the most useful. First, visit the Dropbox website and sign up for a free account at www.tinyurl.com/signupfordropbox. You will initially get 2GB of storage space, but can purchase more in the future if you would like. 2GB is more than enough storage to share docs, photos, and other relatively small files (but if you use the above link, we both get an extra 250 MB of space). After you sign up, you will be prompted to download the application. The application is the meat and bones of the operation and is what makes Dropbox easy to use. Once installed, a Dropbox folder will appear on the desktop. This is where you will drag and drop files for them to appear on your other machines. You will have to install and enter your credentials in the application on every computer that you want synced. However, if you are on a public computer, you can easily view your files through Dropbox’s web interface. To share a folder with a friend,

simply create another folder inside the Dropbox folder. Then right-click it and navigate to Dropbox > Share This Folder. You will be taken to Dropbox’s website where you must enter in the email addresses of friends that you want to share this folder with. Once they accept your invite, they will have access to the content inside that specific folder, as well as the ability to share their own files with you instantly. Nifty! Another feature that I found useful was the Public folder inside the Dropbox folder. If there is a file that you

want to share with users who do not use Dropbox, simply put a file in the Public folder, right-click it and navigate to Dropbox > Copy Public Link. This will provide you with a link to send to anyone that will allow them to download the file to their computer. Those are the basics of Dropbox. If you already have experience using this cool little application, I would love to hear some of the ways that you use Dropbox and any tricks/tips that you might have! Feel free to drop me an email at craig@techolive.com.
