& Appeal for Support

Where people of goodwill get together and transcend their differences for the common good, peaceful and just solutions can be found even for those problems which seem most intractable. - Nelson Mandela

Dear Friends, As we reflect on the work of the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center this past year, one theme keeps emerging: the Common Good. In February, we gathered for Catholic Advocacy Day in Olympia under the theme, Catholics for the Common Good. In May, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Northwest Center for Responsible Investment with the theme, Investing for the Common Good. Indeed, this motivates all we do at IPJC. In a society that seems increasingly polarized, promoting the common good has become ever more important and urgent. Responding to the biblical mandate to be our neighbor’s keepers, we recognize that we are called to work for policies and practices which uphold the dignity and value of all persons, regardless of race, wealth, nationality, citizenship or any other distinctions which are used to divide us. This year we promoted the Common Good through: GG Women’s Justice Circles which empower women who are low-income and marginalized to speak for themselves and their communities. GG Standing with our immigrant brothers and sisters, through public witness, legal clinics and family preparedness workshops. GG Engaging in honest and sometimes painful discussions about racism in our society. GG Promoting care and respect for God’s creation. GG Advocating in corporate boardrooms for gun safety, worker protections and environmental sustainability. When we do this work, we do it in the name of all of you, our wonderful community of friends and supporters. We are so grateful for you, and we invite you to continue your support for IPJC in whatever way you can: GG Make a donation of any size, a regular pledge, or a tax-deductible donation from your IRA. GG Designate IPJC as your charity for employer matching or United Way. GG Share the IPJC story with your friends, colleagues, parishes and communities. GG And continue to offer your prayers for this ministry of peace and justice. We look forward to continuing, with you, to work for the Common Good!

Events Building the Beloved Community Racism & Beyond

Catholic Advocacy Day Catholics for the Common Good On February 7, Catholics traveled in the cold and ice to the State Capital in Olympia where they met with 123 legislators from 39 districts to advocate for the common good on issues including affordable housing, mental health services and the death penalty. IPJC organizes the day which is cosponsored by the Washington State Catholic Conference and Catholic Community Services/Catholic Housing Services.

On November 10, over 150 people of faith gathered to engage in prayer, listening and learning on racism. Sisters Patty Chappell and Anne-Louise Nadeau from Pax Christi USA offered us education, challenge and inspiration. Seeking Racial Justice was also the subject of the Spring issue of A Matter of Spirit. IPJC welcomed Open Wide Our Hearts: the Enduring Call to Love—A Pastoral Letter Against Racism published by the US Bishops in November. A study guide for the Pastoral will be available from IPJC in December.

2019 Eastern Washington Legislative Conference Inform, Inspire, Involve IPJC presented a workshop on Gun Safety which began by recognizing that the issue of guns can be polarizing and voicing the hope that we could approach gun violence in the spirit called for by Pope Francis: “[with] neither a culture of confrontation nor a culture of conflict…but rather a culture of encounter and a culture of dialogue; this is the only way to peace.” Attendees were encouraged to join with others to understand the crisis we face, realize that we share the goal of saving lives and agree on solutions that address gun violence.

Church Reform A Historical Perspective

Sharing the Journey Third Annual Catholic Immigration Summit On June 8, the Third Annual Catholic Immigration Summit drew over 175 participants. The day included a keynote by Tony Cube from the Justice for Immigrants campaign of the USCCB, opportunities to network, parishes sharing best practices for solidarity with immigrants and participants pledging to take action. Co-sponsors included IPJC, Archdiocese of Seattle, Catholic Community Services, Seattle University and St. James Cathedral.

On March 19, Fr. Pat Howell, SJ, presented a historical perspective on previous reform movements in the Church and offered thoughts on how lessons from the past might inform this current moment. To Reform and Transform the Church was also the topic of the Winter issue of A Matter of Spirit.

On April 10, we gathered to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Northwest Center for Responsible Investment. Tim Smith, former director of the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility (ICCR), shared his reflections on the importance of shareholder advocacy work. Earlier this year, Sister Judy Byron was honored with the ICCR Legacy Award for her work which has “provided a strong moral foundation and an enduring record of demonstrated influence on corporate policies.”

IPJC facilitated the first Know Your Rights and Family Preparedness Training in Belfair in June. We partnered with Agua Viva, an Evangelical church, and CIELO, a community organization based in Shelton. Our regular partners, Colectiva Legal del Pueblo and Ureña Law Office, joined us to conduct the training. We focused on immigrant rights, asylum eligibility, U, T and family visas and family preparedness plans. After the training, we conducted an Immigration Legal Clinic where 25 families accessed free legal advice in Spanish, Mam and Kanjobal.

Justice for Women is a grassroots movement for social

justice and systemic change, especially for women living in poverty. Justice Circles were held in Aberdeen, Bonney Lake, Everett, Rochester, Seattle, Walla Walla, WA; New Brunswick, NJ

Rochester A group of Latina mothers in Thurston County were concerned about the lack of amenities— no bathrooms, water fountains or streetlights— at Independence Park. The women use this park daily with their children and have to depend on the facilities in nearby buildings. The Circle’s research found that the park belongs to the school district and funding was not available to remodel it. They contacted their District Commissioner, and invited him to the Circle where he enthusiastically interacted with the women and their families and agreed that a new park is essential to Rochester. The Circle has petitioned the county for the construction of a new park with up-to-date facilities

Families United for Healthy Communites Forum

Aberdeen Latina mothers from St. Mary Catholic Church organized a free community forum, “Families United for Healthy Communities.” In this event, community health organizations and leaders, including representatives from the County Health Department, informed and empowered over 100 community members with resources related to depression and suicide prevention. The Circle conducted a survey of adults about the frequency of feelings and symptoms of depression. The results were used to validate the need for mental health resources in Spanish and to raise awareness about the necessity of hiring bilingual mental health counselors and health educators in Grays Harbor County.

The Circle created a committee to raise awareness through providing free trainings on domestic violence prevention and addressing the gaps in services in the community. They hosted a free Spanish domestic violence workshop, “No More Sexual and Domestic Violence,” in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, RWJ Barnabas Health and the New Brunswick Domestic Violence Awareness Coalition. The workshop identified the red flags and types of intimate partner violence, the legal rights of survivors and how to support survivors of domestic violence. Seattle At the Village Spirit Center, a group of resilient and caring Black mothers addressed the lack of awareness about mental health issues in their community. Through their research, the women learned how stress, anxiety and not expressing emotions are passed down from generation to generation. The Circle organized a free mental health resource fair, “The A.C.T. (Action Changes Things) of Cultivating Healthy Minds.” The fair connected mental health providers with community members, dispelled mental health-related myths and raised awareness about the importance of cultivating healthy minds.

Afghanistan In December, the World Affairs Council of Seattle brought a delegation visiting from Afghanistan to IPJC to learn about our Women’s Justice Circles. The US State Department sponsors this professional exchange program entitled, “Enhancing the Capacity of Peace and Reconciliation Leaders.”

Human Trafficking The World Affairs Council of Seattle invited IPJC to meet with a State Department delegation from the Qatar National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking to share best practices in ending human trafficking.

We established NWCRI and found the perfect partner in the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility where we collaborate with over 300 faithful voices committed to improving corporate policies and practices on vital environmental, social and governance issues. Over the past 25 years, the members of NWCRI have used their investments in corporations to work for a just and sustainable global community. We celebrate our engagements!

Sustainable Future: Call to Action for Companies, Investors and the Faith Community Prior to our Spring Benefit dinner, NWCRI hosted an event to consider how we can work together for a sustainable future for people and planet.
