pokane, WA— Giselle Cárcamo, Justice for Women Coordinator, is facilitating new regional interactive Spanish leadership training workshops for emerging leaders. Storytelling, movement and co-created narratives are used to walk together through the five practices of leadership: purpose, vision, partnership, resourcefulness and performance. Last fall, the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center partnered with the Rainier Beach Community Center, Seattle; St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Connell; and Casa Latina, Seattle for these unique two-hour Spanish-language workshops designed to empower Latina leaders.

ort Townsend, WA—Surrounded by pristine water and the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula, the women at Dove House Women’s Justice Circle walk together on their journey of healing from abuse. Even though their stories differ, they recognize a common thread—their experiences of emotional abuse were not acknowledged by some professionals, the legal system, their families or society. The women all have healed themselves after years of being sabotaged and degraded by their partners.

when children walk to and from new bus stops and cross busy arterials. The women of the TLC Women’s Justice Circle decided to speak out to prevent tragedy from striking their community. They testified in front of the Pedestrian Traffic and Transportation Committee and their city council representatives about the need to improve crosswalk safety. Their testimony landed on eager ears. The Circle was thrilled to hear the actions the council would take: three schools, including Finch Elementary, the school the TLC children attend, will have traffic cameras and $124 fines for speeders!

Peruvians Challenge GenderBased Violence
L
ima, Peru—In the district of El Rímac, a group of enthusiastic women leaders, who are very committed to their community and church, decided to take a more active role in fighting gender-based violence in their community. Upon discovering that many cases of families and women reporting abuse have not been well received by the local authorities, these leaders decided to guide and inform people going through this difficult situation. They have reached out to collaborate with other institutions and agencies working against gender violence in neighboring districts. In partnership with the Municipality of El Rímac, the Circle organized “Building Awareness and Creating Strategies to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence,” a conference designed to educate their community to prevent and report gender-based violence. Several local authorities not only applauded but also participated in this initiative, including the Mayor of El Rímac, congresswomen, policy makers, local authorities, psychologists, social workers and heads of women-led organizations. The Circle´s task has just begun. They have decided to continue working with women, men and families who suffer from violence, and are coordinating with other agencies and authorities to propose gender-based violence prevention programs.
