NEW ANYBUS GATEWAY MAKES MODBUS DEVICES TALK BACNET

The new Anybus BACnet to Modbus gateway makes it possible to connect Modbus devices to a BACnet network. The gateway handles conversion between Modbus (RTU, ASCII, and TCP) and BACnet/IP and makes each connected Modbus device appear as a BACnet compliant device on the BACnet network.

A

s BACnet networks are increasingly being used in buildings and infrastructure installations, there is also an increasing demand for integrating devices that communicate on Modbus into BACnet networks. Therefore, HMS now presents the Anybus BACnet to Modbus gateway. This gateway works as a translator between the two networks allowing Modbus RTU, ASCII and TCP-devices to show up as individual BACnet-compliant devices on a BACnet/IP network. This enables central BACnet control and supervision of Modbus devices such as drives, HVAC controllers and measuring equipment in building installations.

How the gateway works Two ports are available on the gateway to connect to serial Modbus (RTU and ASCII) and Ethernet (BACnet/IP and Modbus TCP). When connected, users will benefit from a free library of common Modbus device profiles in order to quickly establish communication between the networks. HMS also provides a straight-forward tool with instructions on how to create device profiles for Modbus devices not yet covered by the library. Commissioning and troubleshooting is done in the included web interface. www.hms-networks.com MORE INFORMATION

Making BACnet system integration easier “The Anybus BACnet to Modbus gateway gives system integrators and building owners more flexibility as they now can use Modbus devices in BACnet projects as well,” comments Markus Bladh, Product Manager at HMS. “The gateway is also a good fit for machine builders who want to offer their products to the building automation market. We are seeing an increasing general market demand to connect Modbus devices to BACnet networks, and this new gateway adds yet another gateway combination to the over 300 Anybus gateways

already available off the shelf for fieldbus and industrial Ethernet connectivity.“

GRINDING WITH HALF OF THE AXES Integrated IPC: the freely programmable AKD PDMM drive.

For the “Titan” series grinders, Bottero selected a highly efficient automation solution based on the AKD PDMM smart drives.

At Bottero Group, KOLLMORGEN’s AKD series drives perform multiple functions With the “Titan” series, Bottero Group developed a fully automated plant for glass processing that performs bilateral grinding of pane edges.

T

he grinder is composed of a large frame that allows the standard processing of sheets with different sizes and shapes without any operation modifications. The main objective during the design process was to create the simplest, most fully automated driving system without jeopardizing its efficiency. To achieve this aim, Bottero developed in co-operation with KOLLMORGEN a solution that is based on a single AKD servo-converter for driving two servo-motors that are not simultaneously operating.

MORE INFORMATION

In the highly specialized market of glass processing machines, more and more automated solutions are being required. This trend is not determined so much by the need to achieve higher speeds, but rather by the need to ensure maximum machining precision. In fact, it is important to ensure both a dimensional precision and a processing quality that are optimized for every sheet of glass. This need is determined also by the development of increasingly small lots and custom sizes. For its new “Titan” models, the Italian Bottero Group, a leader in cutting and grinding glass, chose a highly efficient automation solution. The drives of the KOLLMORGEN’s AKD series operate two motors in a non-simultaneous way for widely different fields of 05 | Industry USA | January 2015

12

application. The whole system is controlled by an intelligent AKD PDMM system with integrated PLC and motion control functionalities, which combine the qualities of the actuators with the most advanced functions for sequential and movement control. In Bottero plants, the AKD PDMM performs two main drive tasks: the positioning of the glass sheets and the drive of a grinding wheel. In addition, the device is also used to control the drive system with 9 AKD series drives. Thanks to its rapid regulation circuits and to the powerful control unit, the KOLLMORGEN automation platform provides ideal conditions to ensure the maximum bandwidth and to improve the efficiency. These intelligent devices with integrated motion control, cuts in half the number of drives in the glass processing machine. This breakthrough, which led to a drastic reduction of costs in terms of hardware and installation was made possible thanks to the collaboration of KOLLMORGEN, as design partner from the early stages of the project. A single drive for two functions In the Titan series, the glass is transported through four toothed belts – two upper belts and two lower belts. Each belt has its own drive with synchronized axes.

NEWS

Bottero plants follow the current market trend that prefers small batch sizes.

KOLLMORGEN drives allow the precise positioning of the glass sheets and the drive of grinding wheels.

Author: Fabio Massari, KOLLMORGEN Italy

KOLLMORGEN’s synchronous servomotors of the AKM series use the Hiperface feedback system. Once the positioning of the plate is completed, the drives act as simple threephase speed controllers for the induction motors that operate the wheels. The tasks of the other 6 AKD drives are structured in a similar way to distribute the 16 control operations to half of the drives. The operation of induction motors is performed through incremental transducers, with either U/F characteristic curve or open regulation circuit (open loop). This rather unusual choice has come from intensive development, in which the experts at KOLLMORGEN drive systems have actively collaborated in. During the project it became clear that the motors integrated in the “Titan” models are never operated at the same time. This gave rise to the idea to connect two motors with a single servo drive. The technical implementation of this project was possible only because the KOLLMORGEN’s AKD drives have two separate X9 and X10 interfaces, which permit two different feedback systems to be connected which in turn are connected with two programmatic function blocks based on the application.

Increasing automation With the Titan series, Bottero has managed to meet the needs of mass production, allowing the use of the production lines both in major industries and in medium-sized enterprises. This plant is a concrete example of the increase of the automation level in the glass processing industry, oriented to a mixed production in order to provide, in a single order, a wide range of thicknesses and sizes of the product. “The companies that work the glass must be able to respond to these requests with the appropriate facilities,”says Andreas Dürrstein, Bottero Sales Manager in Germany. He foresees that, in the future, the detection of the plates in the plants will take place automatically. In this case, the reading of the information occurs, for example, by means of bar codes, and allows to automatically launch the following work steps. In a highly competitive international market, dominated by mediocre products, the choice of special products, with a customized finish, offers German companies “an excellent opportunity to gain a foothold in the market,” Dürrstein stresses during an interview with the Glaswelt magazine. The unique selling point of the company, based in Cuneo (Italy), is to provide high-tech and extensive know-how in all areas of the construction of machines for glass processing. Bottero builds full plants for processing of laminated and monolithic flat glass, as well as for the production of glass containers.

MORE INFORMATION

Collecting plant data As soon as the task was completed, the respective parameters of the motor are transmitted by the central AKD PDMM through the EtherCAT Ethernet bus in real-time. The drives support communication through I/O connections on the device. In the configuration developed in collaboration with KOLLMORGEN, the drives feature 75 digital inputs, 22 digital outputs and 10 analog inputs and outputs, respectively. With this “on board” technology, Bottero saves 30% of decentralized I/O systems, reducing the hardware and installation costs, as well as space in the control cabinet.

The communication with the upper level control unit with a touch panel display system is realized through Modbus TCP.

EMERSON VARIABLE SPEED SOLUTIONS ENHANCE BEAM PUMPS IN ARTIFICIAL LIFT PROCESS

Emerson Industrial Automation’s latest solutions, such as the Powerdrive FX four-quadrant drive in combination with an LSRPM synchronous magnet-type motor from the company’s Dyneo® range, are now delivering priceless advantages to increasing numbers of wells using beam pumps (RRP, reciprocating rod pumps).

N

umerous concerns over fixed speed RRPs are driving demand for variable speed solutions. These include pump-off, which will likely occur if production is too high (incorrect pulley-belt ratio). Secondly, pulley-belt ratio adjustment is required frequently in young and new wells. Other concerns over fixed speed pumping include the limitation of monitoring possibilities and potential difficulties in detecting fluid pound. Furthermore, too many motors on the same electric network can cause a lagging power factor, driving the need for capacitor banks.

MORE INFORMATION

In contrast, variable speed technology allows pumping speed to be adjusted to field requirements, thus avoiding field work and the interruption of production. Further advantages include the ability to correct the oil field’s power factor without the need for capacitor banks, while VSD also provides soft starting, torque limitation and constant speed (reducing mechanical stress on the gearbox and rod).

In the past, because RRPs have a particular operating cycle whereby power is actually produced 15% of the time, this power had to be dissipated through bulky braking resistors. However, using the patented, compact, fourquadrant, C-Light Powerdrive FX, these issues are negated. For instance, there is no need for additional resistors – the power generated is fed back naturally to the power supply like with a line contactor in fixed speed. What’s more, harmonics are 25%, lower than a conventional six-pulse solution (independent of the load), while a better power factor means that Powerdrive FX also offers significantly lower line current. Other advantages of Powerdrive FX include easy installation either outdoors or indoors, and a rugged design featuring tropicalised boards and a resin-treated line choke. In addition, Powerdrive FX eliminates the need for technicians to visit the site to retrieve well data, set speeds and reset any faults – all thanks to remote access capability. Full production optimisation will rely upon pairing a Powerdrive FX with an LSRPM synchronous magnet-type motor from the Dyneo® range. Over a cycle, the torque

profile of a RRP averages 50% of the nominal torque of the motor. In comparison with an induction motor, the higher efficiency of Emerson’s DyneoŽ LSRPM over a wide speed and load range will lead to significantly reduced electricity consumption. Other benefits include its advanced design, which saves on maintenance through longer bearing life and reduced lubrication intervals. Furthermore, not only is the LSPRM motor smaller and lighter than a standard induction motor, it is also proven technology that does not require servicing any differently. In conclusion, tests have proven that the combination of Powerdrive FX and LSRPM offers up to 20% in energy savings, reducing considerably the total cost of ownership compared with a traditional six-pulse drive and induction motor. AVAILABLE NOW FOR DOWNLOAD: NEW EPLAN PLATFORM 2.4

Based on a simple, single-line representation with bus connections, EPLAN Electric P8 automatically identifies the bus configuration.

The new major release of the EPLAN Platform is now available. PLC project planning in graphical overviews, sub-projects and new navigation options accelerate project planning, even in large projects. Extended support for IEC 81346 and IEC 61355 through structuring principles and reference designations offers a basis for innovative design methods.

T

he latest release 2.4 of the EPLAN Platform is now available for download and, for the first time, also as a 64-bit version. Overall, the CAE system makes an impact by providing additional opportunities to increase efficiency during the engineering process. The simplified representation of the PLC communication networks makes the documentation and management of PLC structures clearer and easier to use. Also the sub-project management also enhances the overview. Specific sections can be extracted from a project, individually edited and merged back into a final project.

The goal is: Higher data quality Accurate and predictable data entry can now be achieved throughout the entire platform with user-definable and configurable properties. Users can create default values selection lists for properties. These consistent inputs ensure correct results when filtering reports. Additional check runs have been implemented to check and validate the parts management database to ensure that the managed data is accurate, thus enhancing the quality of the part data. Previously, this was an elaborate manual process – but now the system performs the checks automatically.

As a result, it creates a complete and high-quality documentation so users can concentrate specifically on their required tasks. Another helpful option is the change protection used for areas of the project which have already been approved is another helpful option: This means that any changes made to the objects in those areas are protected. This way, areas which have been fully planned or parts which have already been manufactured cannot be changed inadvertently.

Better navigation for maintenance Navigation throughout the project has become even easier and faster with all displayed cross-references now are available to be accessed through hyperlinks. These hyperlinks also are available in the export to PDF, making the PDF a valuable reference document for the maintenance engineers. This makes it a lot easier for colleagues in maintenance to use the documentation. A new report type for distributed devices allows users to generate the project information into an easier and simpler report for

For example, this function is helpful during faults as being placed in the documentation as a report, it is easier to identify and access a component faster. Other standards supported The EPLAN Platform supports multiple standards, for instance the IEC 81346; now it is also possible to identify project pages according to IEC 61355. Using this type of identifier allows users to use an object designation when structuring the documentation. (RE)LAUNCH: NEW EPLAN DATA PORTAL 470,000 part data including schematic macros, geometric dimensions and documents can be imported to engineering automatically using the Eplan Data Portal.

An integrated 3D viewer, a new user interface with manufacturer logos in fast and easy grid layout, additional manufacturers and updated component catalogues: The new version of the Eplan Data Portal will be available as of August 2014 and it provides users with significant functional advantages and, since it now contains 470,000 components, also features 20% more device data.

U

sers will benefit from enormous time savings and increased project quality. The current 470,000 part data, including schematic macros, geometric dimensions and documents, can be imported to engineering automatically. This is made easier, thanks to the innovative functions such as a newly integrated 3D viewer, which enables users to view and assess components quickly and easily.

MORE INFORMATION

It is possible to access several different views such as front, page or isometric views very easily with just a click of the mouse. Free rotation and zooming functions allow individual detailed views to be generated in a very flexible manner. The advantages for the user are obvious: For example, when placing a part in the project, the user will receive reliable decision support as to whether the component is suitable for the proposed control cabinet.

Innovative operation with feedback function The interface of the Eplan Data Portal has also been optimized with the design functionality of the Data Portal App. Now the view of the 66 manufacturers that are currently involved have adapted this look and feel by displaying the manufacturer logos in a grid view that speeds up navigation. The feedback function has also been expanded with the new interface. Users can directly submit requests to manufacturers in the application. For example, if the user wants to send information about missing components, it can be done directly from the Data Portal. This means that the quality of the data is constantly increasing. The manufacturers involved also reap the rewards: the feedback function provides a direct line to the customer. The manufacturer knows what is required in concrete terms and can fulfil the user's requests in an optimal manner. The improved search function is another new addition to the portal. Search requests for article or type numbers are directly displayed as the first search results – this means the right component can be found faster.

66 manufacturers with more than 470,000 records The Eplan Data Portal has not only made a major leap forward in terms of functionality, but also in regard to the manufacturer catalogues. Since the last update, in the beginning of July, five new product catalogues have been added. A further ten product catalogues have been expanded and updated. The number of devices has increased by more than 20%, which means that there are now more than 470,000 parts available.

Rockwell Automation has added more than 1500 parts from their MicroLogix product line, Micro850 product line and molded case circuit breakers. SMC Pneumatic has updated and expanded its product spectrum. Fluid users now have a variety of cylinders, valves and tubes at their disposal since there are now more than 15,000 records to choose from. ABB, General Electric, Icotek, Helukabel, Numatics, Rockwell Automation, Sick and Wieland have also updated their product ranges in the Eplan Data Portal.

The renowned Italian manufacturing company, Finder, is now represented with almost 700 records. Another new addition in the field of sensors and evaluation systems is ifm electronic with almost 500 records to support their customers. The new integration of the Vega configurator is also an interesting addition to the Data Portal. This means that the user is not only provided with standard components for process measurement technology from Vega Grieshaber KG, but also has the option of individually selecting and configuring components according to project demands.

Conclusion: Users benefit from a constantly increasing amount of device data – combined with an innovative technology that supports efficient design. More information: www.eplanusa.com/edp

KEYENCE IM SYSTEMS SIMPLIFY INSPECTION OF MULTIPLE PARTS AT LEATHERMAN TOOLS

Multi-tools are made up of many parts, and Image Dimension Measuring Systems make inspecting them all faster and easier.

M

ulti-tools from Leatherman Tool Group Inc., Portland, Ore., may contain screwdrivers, knives, files, and many more useful tools in a single unit. The tools, some small enough to fit on a keychain, are known and loved around the world by everyone from homeowners taking on a weekend project to first responders, military personnel, and even medical professionals.

parts. Users simply place a target part on the IM system’s stage and press the button. The system then automatically measures up to 99 points in a matter of seconds with repeatability of ±1 micron. The speed, flexibility and ease of programming and use of Keyence IM series systems make them ideal for inspection of Leatherman’s large variety of parts.

“We produce a lot of parts from start to finish,” explains Leatherman Gauge Technician David Knight. “We don’t have a foundry here, so for cast parts we receive blanks and we do the machining. For most of our steel parts, we get rolls of steel, blank them and machine them, heat treat them, and then assemble them.”

“I do a lot of programming for the IM systems, and for simple parts I can have a program in ten minutes,” Knight explains. “Even for the most complex parts we inspect on the Keyence, I can have a program done and evaluated in an hour or two. We’ve got dozens of programs on our three IM systems that measure up to 50 features on some of our more complex parts. But for me, the best thing about the systems is their production inspection capability. They’re just easy to use. There’s no chance of operator error — operators just place the part on the stage and push the button. No matter who does that they’re going to get the same results in just a few seconds. It’s a big time saver, and knowing that everybody’s going to get the same measurements when they use the system provides peace of mind.”

MORE INFORMATION

Leatherman uses measuring equipment ranging from micrometers all the way up to a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to inspect parts at various stages of the process, including sampling of incoming lots, first-article inspection, and production quality assurance. The Keyence systems replaced hard gauging that Leatherman used for many years to evaluate components for its multi-tools, eliminating cabinets full of hard fixtures built for specific parts. Getting a fixture designed and fabricated in the company’s machine shop could take weeks, but the Keyence systems enable Leatherman to get parts up and running with full inspection capability in a matter of minutes or hours. The systems also easily handle Leatherman’s tolerances, which are important to proper assembly and function of its multi-tools. “There’s a lot of interaction between the parts we make,” Knight says. “Our parts all have to fit together in one tool, so tolerances are tight, most commonly ±0.001 inches and ±0.003 inches. Hole position tolerances are especially important.”

Training Leatherman personnel to program and use the IM systems has also been fast and easy. Knight says operators can be trained in just a few minutes, enabling them to check parts themselves rather than bringing them to the quality department for evaluation. The location of Leatherman’s three IM systems near machining centers, stamping presses and other production equipment on the shop floor also facilitates first-article inspection, process control and troubleshooting.

looking to add another system with a larger stage next year. A lot of companies come through here demonstrating new equipment and tooling. Keyence was one of them. They said, ‘We think we have the solution to your inspection needs,’ and they delivered. The ease of programming and operation of the IM system is the main thing for me. It’s just so easy and accurate, it improves our quality while it eliminates a lot of the training and measurement time,” Knight concludes.

“We were looking for new technology to improve our measurement capabilities. Keyence was one of the companies we contacted. They demonstrated the IM system, we liked it and we bought it. Now we have three of them, and we’re 05 | Industry USA | January 2015

NOVOsphere™ has six essential application to help our customers be more productive: - Select and Advise: This is the stage where users evaluate machining strategies based upon machine, material, part features, and specs. What is the best approach? How long will it take? How much will it cost? Which tools do I need? - Simulate: This is the stage where users simulate the entire process from end to end with the use of software such as CAM. Are there any dimensional issues? Possible collisions, too many forces? - Inquire and Purchase: This is the stage where users find out what they already have that can do the job and if it’s available in real time to purchase when they need it. - Optimize: This is the stage where users would like to know how the plan is working. Are we within planned cycle time, costs? Do I use this tool/process consistently across machines/plants?

Specifically, NOVO™ users can request a price quote from their local Kennametal Distribution Partners by transferring their shopping cart list to them via the “Request Quote” button. The distributor will receive a notification with complete detail of the items and requestor information to respond. This means NOVO™ Optimize can draw data from machine tools, cutting tools, presetters or any piece of shop equipment or data source. And because it’s connected to NOVO™, it can automatically recommend process knowledge changes (speeds and feeds) or identify better-performing tools based on your specific needs – get the job done faster or optimize a specific machine or cell based on shop workload. “Each shop using NOVO™ Optimize has improvement opportunities unique to them based on operator feedback and shop conditions,” Tilzey says. “Identifying sources of machine downtime combined with powerful knowledge-based recommendations means the possibility for real, significant process improvement is just waiting to happen.”

NOVO™ then ranks the results — based on knowledgebased rules — to best meet the challenges of the application as defined by the customer’s operating environment and user preferences, providing far more useful process knowledge than any online catalog alone, all obtained in a fraction of the time.

Such empowered shops better plan, process, and optimize their operations for significant productivity gains. The NOVO™ Optimize application is a subscription-based system developed in conjunction with Berkeley, CA – based System Insights Inc allowing customers to optimize a specific machine or an entire shop.

In the second case, when a customer already has preferred tool and grade in mind, NOVO™ smart-attribute filters not only quickly select the products available to do the job, NOVO™ also gives the options on what cutting item and adaptive item fits and also works with the selected solution. SCADA MODERNIZATION OF THE INDUSTRIAL AQUEDUCT OF LAKE COMO

Lake Como, in northern Italy, is served by nearly 40 miles (60 KM) of aqueducts. The aqueduct draws its water directly from the lake and pumps it to storage tanks. The water flows from the tanks via aqueducts serving businesses around the lake. The waterworks reliability is paramount as water disruption leads to lost production for manufacturers of Como. After 30 years of service, the SCADA system was in need of modernization.

E

nergy costs in the region have risen significantly during the last 30 years. The geography of the lake set in mountainous terrain, is particularly challenging to water management. The modernization of the SCADA created the opportunity to not only take advantage of technology advances, but also to review concepts of water management and to introduce the concept of energy profile management.

MORE INFORMATION

Pumping is the greatest percentage of energy consumed. Energy profile management involves analyzing daily consumption and comparing to lake levels which allows projection of storage required. The set-points for the pumps are managed such that the tanks are filled at night when electricity is less expensive. Operating the pumps during the day is possible, but minimized to reduce costs. The SCADA collects other relevant operational data of the system including continuous recording of pressure, level, flow rates and volumetric meter readings. In the future, 05 | Industry USA | January 2015

34

further optimization of energy costs may be possible. Telecommunications was evaluated in the early phases of the project. The decision was made to move to an Ethernet based network. Existing telephone land-lines interconnect the PLCs and the SCADA host. HDSL provides the Ethernet network over the telephone system. The Ethernet-based network provides multiple advantages to a field bus architecture including the potential for future revenue sources. For example, other Lake Como utilities may lease bandwidth for their own industrial protocols or other applications such as surveillance and telephony may be hosted. The design also made the telecommunications independent of PLC and SCADA vendors for the project. Two critical aspects of the communication reliability had to be addressed were network security and availability. Standard IT practices for security are used. Firewalls and VPN’s ensure that the appropriate policy is deployed, allowing only access to recognized users of the system.

NEWS

Secondly, cellular modems are connected to each PLC. In the case of a failure of the land-line network, system operators can reach the PLC directly using mobile devices. A client-server architecture was chosen for the SCADA. The simplified design is based on commercially available hardware with a modular open architecture for maintainability. PcVue, from ARC Informatique, was chosen for versatility and ease of maintenance. The graphics provides a very lean display, thanks to modern symbols for visualization and animation. The variables (tags) in PcVue, using a branching structure, minimize the number of screens to be developed. The client stations deployment is essentially automatic. Clients are enabled by simply sharing the project file. Any modification for the project can be made on the server and copied to the clients.

A critical aspect was coming on-line with minimal disruption. It was not easy to manually operate the system and only possible for short times during emergencies. To replace the SCADA, a total halt of the waterworks was required. Well organized and coordinated teams worked simultaneously on all sites, such that installation and commissioning was minimized. The selected system integrator, T.S.A., provided a careful analysis of the state of the art in existing similar systems. T.S.A, formed a partnership with Borghi, who had previously been responsible for the design and installation of new electrical switchgear and control. The synergy between the two partners (TSA-Borghi) allowed for a competitive proposal with a substantial savings in cost. More importantly, the team had all the necessary areas of expertise to be able to execute all stages from design to commissioning without depending on third party subcontractors.

MORE INFORMATION

The system has about a thousand alarms, which are divided into priority levels. All of the alarms are stored and are available in both textual forms and with graphic animations. When alarms are raised, the SCADA uses contextual logic to determine the appropriate course of action. For high priority alarms, SMS text messages are sent to the operator based on the concept that the operator can connect to the network and acknowledge the alarm. If the operator does not respond within a designated time, the system will resend the SMS message until the alarm is acknowledged.

Even the choice of the contractor was strategic. Only qualified system integrators capable of design and implementation of the entire system with full autonomy on the project were considered.

EMERSON REGENERATIVE VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES BOOST ARTIFICIAL LIFT APPLICATIONS

Emerson Industrial Automation’s Powerdrive regenerative Variable Speed Drive (VSD) solutions are proving an increasingly popular choice on oil pumping systems in ‘artificial lift’ applications in comparison with more traditional options such as six – or multi-pulse rectifiers, or active/passive filters.

V

SDs, which are used in most oil sector pumping operations thanks largely to their established benefits of energy efficiency and flexible process control, are deployed typically on pumps that include ESP (electric submersible pump), PCP (progressive cavity pump) and rod-based types for well activation.

MORE INFORMATION

However, some precautions are needed when using VSDs as electronic devices encourage harmonic currents which circulate due to network impedance. Among the unwanted effects are additional motor losses and impaired stability due to the presence of oscillating torque. Overheating of step-down transformers, increased cable losses and the production of resonant circuits in capacitors are other undesirables. Passive and active filters are among the conventional solutions to harmonic currents. However, while these are economic, they are not completely fail-safe with regard to harmonic current exceeding the capacity of the filter. Other established solutions, such as multi-pulse rectifiers, require an additional, special transformer with intricate sets of phase-shifted AC output windings. 05 | Industry USA | January 2015

36

As a consequence, increasing numbers are turning to regenerative VSD technology, such as Powerdrive from Emerson. The main advantages of Powerdrive for artificial lift applications include active front end technology which imparts a low level of harmonics distortion on the main supply, typically 3.5% or less. Also, the power factor of regenerative VSDs such as Powerdrive is close to 1, while the output voltage can be higher than the input voltage. In fact, the input stage of Powerdrive is regulated at a higher voltage value than the normal voltage value of a six-pulse rectifier, ensuring this type of converter is not impacted by fluctuations in mains voltage. Of course, the VSD input consumes only active energy, which reduces the current and the losses in subsea cables and all surface equipment. The transformer also experiences reduced magnetic noise. Another major consideration for the oil industry is ATEX standards. Here, the use of Powerdrive provides a better way of assuring the security and reliability of ATEX motors than standard inverters. Firstly, from a thermal point of

NEWS

view, Powerdrive keeps a constant temperature rise in the motor even if the input voltage decreases. This is because Powerdrive compensates the input voltage drop by up to around 10%, and retains the flux within the motor at constant levels. Secondly, Powerdrive keeps electrical stresses very low due to the output LC (inductor-capacitor) filter. Additional benefits for Powerdrive users include inherent reliability, compactness and ease of service/maintenance due to unit modularity one module can be replaced in just 20 minutes. In addition, Powerdrive can be offered in flexible and customised solutions to match indoor-outdoor applications. Powerdrive clearly demonstrates why it is becoming rapidly adopted for a whole host of applications in the oil and gas industry, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved. HIGH PERFORMANCE IN A COMPACT DESIGN BACKLASH-FREE ROBA®-DS SERVO COUPLINGS WITH SPLIT CLAMPING HUBS

Radial installation: The ROBA®-DS servo couplings with split clamping hubs guarantee easy and fast installation, even in difficult ambient conditions: They are suitable for large shaft distances and in all applications, in which the drive aggregates must not be moved any more.

The high-performance ROBA®-DS shaft couplings transmit the torque backlash-free and with high torsional rigidity. They compensate for shaft misalignment and are both wear – and maintenance-free. On the sizes up to 150 Newton meters, mayr® power transmission are going to extend its standard hubs for mounting the shafts by a radially divisible hub – for easy and fast installation, even in difficult ambient conditions.

S

hort dimensions, little installation space requirements, reduced weight and low mass moments of inertia – the ROBA®-DS servo couplings win over customers due to their high performance density. They are able to transmit high torques even at comparably small diameter, which makes them the ideal shaft couplings for dynamic drive systems with high speeds. These couplings are made of steel and high-strength aluminum alloys, which forms the basis for the extremely compact design.

Backlash-free torque transmission The couplings compensate for radial, axial and angular shaft misalignments by means of the flexible disk packs. This way, they protect the bearings from unwanted wear and tear and prevent unnecessary downtimes and costs. In order to achieve backlash-free torque transmission, the disks in the fixing area are treated with a special blasting procedure. The ROBA®-DS disk pack couplings are robust and reliable. They are temperature-resistant, wear – and maintenancefree and transmit the torque with very high torsional rigidity. Therefore, they are especially suited for applications in extreme ambient conditions.

Fast and easy installation The area of application for servo couplings is growing. Therefore, mayr® power transmission have extended the standard hubs for shaft attachment by a radially divisible hub, a so-called split clamping hub, also for sizes 3 to 15. At permitted speeds of 3000 rotations per minute, these sizes for shaft diameters of 45 to 79 millimeters cover torques from 35 to 150 Newton meters. The half-shells 05 | Industry USA | January 2015

guarantee easy and fast coupling installation, even in difficult ambient conditions. Therefore, the hubs are used preferably in applications, in which the drive aggregates such as the motor and the gearbox must not be moved after the positioning and aligning for coupling installation. These hubs are also recommended for large shaft distances, for example for cardan shafts in linear actuators, as in these cases the coupling is installed last and therefore has to be easy to install. High performance density Installation is carried out radially: To do this, the coupling is brought to the shafts and pre-assembled with the axially moveable half-shells. Here, it is important that the markings on the half-shells and on the hub bodies overlap. Then, the cap screws must be tightened evenly and in several sequences to the required tightening torque. The ROBA速-DS servo couplings are available as doublejointed couplings with a connection plate or a variablelength sleeve. Their compact design, the short installation times and the high performance density make these couplings a particularly efficient and economic solution. MORE INFORMATION

Like all of Kennametal’s Beyond™ line of products, Beyond Drive inserts feature a proprietary post-coat surface treatment that improves edge toughness, reliability, and depth-of-cut notch resistance, and a micro-polished surface to reduce friction and workpiece sticking (BUE). A fine-grained alumina layer allows for increases in cutting speed, improving productivity and reliability at high cutting temperatures. With Beyond Drive, adding a new titanium oxy-carbonitride outer coating (TiOCN) not only increases wear – and abrasion-resistance, its bronze color is also an effective wear indicator. Depending on the application, field tests are showing anywhere between 30 percent and 125 percent more parts per edge. All new Beyond inserts are CVD (chemical vapor deposition) coated, but whereas conventional CVD coatings are under tensile stress, Beyond inserts undergo a proprietary postcoat treatment on all surfaces to reduce this stress, which improves coating adhesion and reduces micro-chipping. More uniform and reliable wear of the cutting edge results in improved and more consistent tool life. “Together with

the right geometry, we’ve seen big improvements in cutting performance and tool life in both internal and field tests,” says Manuel Sedan, senior product manager, turning products, at Kennametal. For example, in one test for a plant producing cast-iron transmission components, with no change in feed, spindle speed, or depth of cut, Beyond Drive completed 325 pieces per cutting edge compared to 200 pieces for the plant’s current inserts. Not only was this a phenomenal increase in parts per edge, projected machine hours freed per year totaled 125 while the number of inserts required per year dropped from 813 to 500.

MORE INFORMATION

“A stronger supply chain that gets more parts to the market reliably is the foundation of a healthy and growing manufacturing industry,” Sedan adds. “Plus the days of one man-one machine are long in the past. With one operator running a cell or any number of machines, greater predictability and performance with tools is an increasingly crucial component for success. Beyond Drive is a truly exciting development that promises more pieces per shift, more efficient machine utilization, and long tool life.” Beyond Drive is available in eight grades and numerous insert styles, covering a complete range of applications for turning steel and cast iron components. SLIM COOLING FANS FOR MOBILE APPLICATIONS

As smart phones, tablets and all mobile devices are becoming slimmer, Sunon is providing a full range of 2mm thickness or below cooling fans.

M

ore and more mobile products are going thinner and lighter and becoming more highly efficient. A new-generation of products is being introduced with the latest 4-core processor. Moreover, in the future, an 8-core processor technology is also being considered. These mobile devices outperform their older counterparts in terms of speed, bandwidth and capacity, and their functions are more diverse. Therefore cooling technique will play an even more crucial, rigorous role in the future! For the past 32 plus years, Sunon has been committed to innovation and invention in the miniature cooling field. Now the company is creating various "thin and light cooling fan" series of products (30x30x3mm〜8x8x3mm) in addition to products of 2mm thickness or below that can be custom-made.

MORE INFORMATION

Clearly, Sunon can completely meet the cooling needs of mobile products. Over the years, the company has been working hard to obtain patents and provide innovation in an aim to be No.1 in the industry. Sunon has been rated No.48 in terms of technical strength around the world and No.4 in Taiwan by "MIT Technology Review"! These prestigious awards give proof to the fact that Sunon’s technical strength is champion in the industry. Traditional fans are 0.6cm 05 | Industry USA | January 2015

minimum thickness. They have a large interior space and use washers, retaining rings, and other necessary parts. Moreover, they fix the fan in place and make it rotate using silicon steel and magnets which supply magnetic lines of force. With slim cooling fans, however, thickness is significantly reduced to 0.4cm or smaller and their internal space is greatly reduced. As no washers and retaining rings are used and magnetic lines of force are insufficient when rotating, the competition’s fans are subject to blade run-outs, blade loosening, and ineffective dust blocking. All these will impact the cooling efficiency, even endangering the product’s service life. www.sunon.com

IP68 FAN

Sunon fans are now available in IP68 version. Dedicated to harsh environments, they are protected against heavy dust and incoming water. Three models are already available and have had UL/TUV certification.

T

o get the IP68 certification level, Sunon engineers developed a complete potting process coating for the motors of the IP68 fans, whereas usual models have glue coating or conformal coating. This specific molding process covered 100% of the stator, coil, circuit and wire by shaped resin, preventing the system from dust and water intrusion. Anti-rust treatment (salt spray protection) is also available as an option.

Customization is possible on demand for large series. www.sunon.com

Several tests have been conducted with success under extremely dusty and wet conditions: 8 hours under a maximum depression of 2 kPa, 1 hour under 1 m of water, etc

E

lmo Motion Control, a leading provider of smart and super-efficient motion control solutions, demonstrates its new record in servo power density: over 4000 W out of only 8.7 cm3 (0.53 inch3). In addition to its superior servo performance and its ultrasmall size, the GOLD BEE was designed and qualified to operate in extreme environmental conditions from -40° C to + 70° C, and mechanical vibrations up to 14 GRMS. The GOLD BEE is new member of Elmo’s GOLD Line servo drives and thus includes all the capabilities, features and functionalities of the “field proven” GOLD Core. The GOLD BEE, as any other GOLD Drive, is capable in conjunction to the EASII software (Elmo Application Studio II) to optimize the control results of any servo mechanism.

The GOLD BEE operates in current, velocity, and advanced position modes in conjunction with a permanent-magnet synchronous DC brush and brushless motors, and linear motor or voice coil. The GOLD BEE supports a wide variety of feedback sensors in single, dual and gantry loop configurations. Based on the premise that “the best way to dissipate heat is not to generate it in the first place,” the GOLD BEE incorporates Elmo’s proprietary FASST (Fast and Soft Switching Technology) resulting in >99% efficiency with negligible EMI.

MORE INFORMATION

“The GOLD BEE is a real world record. We improved the efficiency by 200%, reduced the volume by 75% and increased the power density by more than 400%. Customers’ needs are challenging us to dramatically improve the power / size factor. The GOLD BEE is our solution for applications that have critical space constraints, requires a powerful servo, limited heat dissipation capabilities, and operate in extreme environments. Actually, the servo control of winglets was our motivation to go

even ''Smarter, Smaller, and Simpler''. Our very high powerful ultra-small servo drives enable ''electrical motion control'' of winglets, that significantly enhances the dynamics of the missile and thus reaching the required performance. We’re not aware of any product on the market today that attains this performance, power or size density”, Haim Monhait, Elmo CEO concluded.
