MCLENNAN SUPPLIES SPECIALIST LABORATORY EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER: MOTION CONTROL BRINGS PERFORMANCE BENEFITS FOR MICROBIAL AIR SAMPLER

Microbial air sampling in pharmaceutical, biomedical and healthcare industries is a critical factor to ensure laboratory quality control for aseptic processing, typically where medicinal products and equipment is packaged in sterile environments.

L

eading the field in air sampling technology, the Welsh manufacturer Pinpoint Scientific Ltd has recently introduced its modular ImpactAir® range that offers users flexibility for implementation across a diversity of air sampling tasks. Setting it even further apart from competitive air samplers, the range also offers some unique features based upon motion control technology supplied and supported by Mclennan, the motion systems supplier.

Known as a ‘slit-to-agar’ air sampler, the device draws air at high speeds through a narrow inlet slit whereupon particles, including microbes, impact and adhere to the agar surface of a petri dish that is analysed in another process. By introducing precision rotation of the dish into the design, Pinpoint have ensured that the air is always impacted onto a fresh area of agar to dramatically reduce the probability of ‘twin impingement’ - a phenomena where two microbes land at the same point and appear as a single colony when incubated, causing uncertain results. By controlling the rotation speed and angular rotation factors through a stepper motor driven miniature gearbox, the sample is precisely calibrated and can be consistently compared over a series of similar runs from a few minutes to several hours.

MORE INFORMATION

Furthermore, the ImpactAir microbial air sampler is the first of its kind to employ precision sensors and a miniature stepper motor driven linear actuator to automatically adjust the distance between the air inlet and the agar surface - a critical factor that can vary significantly due to the agar thickness. The introduction of motion control has resulted in the ImpactAir’s ability to ensure a consistent microbial air sampling performance factor that has been independently 10 | Industry EMEA | July 2017

Mclennan worked closely with designers at Pinpoint Scientific to develop the two motion axes used for the ImpactAir. The compact design, laboratory quality build of the device, and the need for the highest reliability led to a competitively priced but high quality solution based on products with a proven performance for medical equipment applications. The rotation axis uses a P5 series high precision instrument ovoid type gearbox with stepper drive providing a 120,000 step/rev for a final angular positioning resolution of 0.003 degrees. MID IN POLE POSITION

Smoke detector concept based on 3D MID. The battery holder is integrated directly in the molded part.

Three-dimensional molded interconnect devices.

T

hree-dimensional molded interconnect devices are a welcome addition to conventional printed circuit boards and are particularly well suited to Industry 4.0 applications. The example of a smoke detector illustrates how design and functional integration are simplified with this technology.

MORE INFORMATION

Whether rigid or flexible, printed circuit boards are a virtually indispensable part of electronic devices as interconnect devices. Plastic molded interconnect devices (MIDs) offer many advantages with regard to connection technology, including the combination of electrical and mechanical functions in a single component. This makes it possible to use the housing and other molded inner structures as an interconnect device, sometimes eliminating the need for a PCB. Three-dimensional functional integration The MID is a multifunctional component with sensors arranged and aligned with a high precision combined with an RFID antenna for sending and receiving signals. This concentration of functions on a single carrier material enables development engineers to create threedimensional microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). 10 | Industry EMEA | July 2017

20

MIDs are ideally suited for this purpose, particularly when manufacturing large and very large volumes. MID technology in detail Three-dimensional MIDs are manufactured using the LDS (laser direct structuring) method: The shape of the interconnect device desired by the customer is created in a single-component injection molding process, which offers virtually unlimited freedom for three-dimensional design. While conventional printed circuit boards use FR4 fiberglass fabric or similar base material, molded interconnect devices are built from thermoplastics. The thermoplastic base material is first compounded with a (nonconductive) laseractivated metal-organic additive. The LDS laser beam structures the circuit pattern onto the device by cleaving the metal-organic additives while roughening and ablating the plastic precisely where the beam strikes the surface. Copper seeds split out from the additive, attracting free copper in the subsequent metallization step.

NEWS to realize. To achieve a fully realized MID product, antennas or shields can be attached to the carrier and connected to the circuit. Circuit density has been achieved in large series production with an 80¾m circuit trace / 80¾m space and contributes to greater opportunity for miniaturization. Example: smoke detectors Today's smoke detectors are ideally suited for upgrading to MID technology. The carrier material for smoke detectors today is made up of plastic components and provides a molded part to which the components may be fixed. MID technology enables significant simplification of the design and the functional integration associated with the smoke detector. The battery holder is integrated directly in the MID part, thus forming all the metal contacts. The two connecting cables and the elaborate soldering process for bonding are now redundant. Standard SMDs can be soldered directly to the plastic, thereby saving costs while also allowing placement to be performed using pick-andplace machines, reducing personnel expenses for the assembly process to a minimum. The number of components is also reduced to a minimum – the printed circuit board is no longer required and circuit paths inscribed directly on the plastic replace the wires, which means that connecting plugs are also not needed. Moreover, it is easy to integrate antennas in order to network the smoke detectors. By adapting the laser programming, any antenna structure can be applied directly to the same carrier material. Last but not least, because the MID technology eliminates the need for mechanical switches, it is simple to metallize a capacitive surface and use it as a capacitive switch.

In the following electroless metallization process within a copper bath the copper seeds created in the lasering step now attract solid copper out of solution. After copper plating, electroless nickel and immersion gold (ENIG) layers may be added to the copper layer. When an MID is not soldered or bonded, nickel alone over copper is sufficient. ENIG metallization ensures good surface properties for designs where SMT soldering or Wire-Bonded component placement is desired. Potential of the technology In modern connection technology, engineers use flex or rigid-flex printed circuit boards or wires if an electrical connection is to be established between several printed circuit boards in various positions and alignments. Here the core benefits of the MIDs allows a reduced number of parts, resulting in process, material, and logistics savings while at the same time raising quality with the reduction of assembly steps and expenses. MID technology holds enormous potential for functionally oriented product development with optimized manufacturing processes.

Proven in industry Three-dimensional MID technology has long been tried and tested in industry. It was first employed for the challenges of spatial antenna construction, as well as for expanding frequency ranges, integration densities and available installation spaces for high-frequency applications. Molded interconnect devices are suitable for 3D antennas in frequency ranges exceeding 6 GHz, reliable for Bluetooth, LTE or Wi-Fi applications. Antennas manufactured using this procedure can be found in billions of smartphones, tablets and other portable devices. Millions of mobile payment terminals also contain MID solutions. All known areas of industry in which currents flow or shielding is necessary harbor countless possible applications for molded interconnect devices. Furthermore, the mechatronic advantages of the technology enable holders to be designed for energy sources such as button batteries, making the interconnect device an elegant solution. www.multipledim.com

NSK BEARINGS SAVE €19,200 PER ANNUM AT BIOGAS PLANT

Where there is contamination by moisture and dust, the service life of NSK Molded-Oil bearings in stainless steel housings is more than twice that of bearings with conventional grease lubrication.

Environmental conditions in biogas plants are unfavourable for conventional rolling bearings – especially in the preparation of the residual vegetative material (© Lianem | Dreamstime.com)

The use of NSK’s advanced Molded-Oil deep groove ball bearings in the rotary screen of a biogas plant has seen service life more than double, a fact that is helping to save €19,200 per annum. Molded-Oil bearings feature lubricant that is embedded in a polyolefin resin, thus preventing the penetration of liquid and particle contaminants to permit extended periods of maintenance-free running.

A

t a vegetable-processing company, a newly-installed biogas plant is being used to ferment residual materials and transform the resulting methane into electric power and heat. The plant relies on a rotary screen to filter coarse and non-fermenting materials, but repeated failures were frequently disrupting operation. Every six weeks (on average), the existing deep groove ball bearings with contact seals had to be replaced. Each rotor has two bearing and there are two rotors per rotary screen. Replacing them took one hour to complete each time.

MORE INFORMATION

Keen to find a resolution, the vegetable-processing company consulted NSK experts, who studied the damaged bearings and the environmental conditions. The cause of the failures was found to be contamination in the bearing raceways. Based on this analysis, NSK recommended replacing the existing bearings with Molded-Oil deep groove ball bearings.

As well as preventing the ingress of contaminants, the base material in Molded-Oil bearings releases the lubricant slowly, so that sufficient lubrication is maintained over a long period. The use of DDU seals on the bearings also help impede the entry of contamination, while service life is extended further still thanks to the use of stainless steel housings, which are the optimum choice in highly corrosive environments. The impressive results achieved at the biogas plant confirm a long-held NSK premise: in applications where the environment is contaminated by moisture and dust, the service life of Molded-Oil bearings in stainless steel housings is more than twice that of bearings with conventional grease lubrication. As a result of the change, the biogas plant at the vegetable processing company now operates trouble-free, with far fewer annual bearing replacements and breakdowns, and much less lost production time. Based on these factors, the annual cost saving has been calculated at €19,200. www.nskeurope.com

SIMPLE TO RETROFIT: EASY TOOL-ID FROM BALLUFF ECONOMICAL ENTRY LEVEL SOLUTION FOR TOOL MANAGEMENT

Tool identification using Balluff Industrial RFID increases production efficiency, as it makes incorrect tool allocation or missing tools a thing of the past. This enables optimizing the service time utilization of the tools. In addition, scrap and rework due to excessive use of tools are virtually eliminated. With Easy Tool-ID Balluff now offers an economical entry into tool management. It is simple to retrofit and stands out with easy installation and configuration.

A

ll this is required is a USB port (keyboard expander) on the machine tool and a presetter. The data are written via RFID technology from the presetter to the tool and then passed on through the Easy Tool-ID system to the machine tool. Manual entry is eliminated. Setup times and the risk of incorrect entries are significantly reduced. The system consists of a tool stand with integrated read/write head, a processor unit, a microcontroller and the power supply.

The solution's handling and functional principle could not be easier: At the tool presetter, each tool is measured and its data, such as diameter and radius, are written on the data carrier on the tool shank. The user simply brings the tool to the machine, places it in the tool holder and presses a key. The system then emulates the key input and automatically reads the data with the Balluff Tool-ID through the keyboard interface to the machine controller. Manual, error-prone entry is thus eliminated. This means that even existing machines can be modernized and upgraded with a costeffective tool ID solution. MORE INFORMATION

QUALITY CONTROL OF RUBBER SEALS ON THE BASIS OF HEIGHT MEASUREMENTS

Smart at-Line quality control of rubber seals with PosCon HM.

The measurement of object height is an important aspect in quality control applications. With the PosCon HM light-section sensor, Baumer offers a unique, compact measuring device for this kind of tasks. The smart, pre-configured profile sensor offers five measurement modes for different measurement tasks.

A

n exact positioning of the measured objects is not required. The PosCon HM provides reliable measurements even on shiny and very dark surfaces. In conjunction with its high measuring accuracy of up to 2 Îźm, it is suitable for a large number of applications in at-line, off-line and in-line control.

MORE INFORMATION

One example is the inspection of black rubber seals for side windows in the automobile industry. In this case, random samples are tested off-line on a special test bench. The seals are fitted into special mounts on a measuring setup. The forms and the curves of the seal may vary, but they must not exceed special limit values. The challenge for the sensors is not only the form, or, to be more precise, the curves, but also the black, light-absorbing material. In the PosCon HM, powerful algorithms analyze up to 600 items of height information per measurement and determine the maximum height of the object, irrespective of its position. Only the PosCon HM makes it possible to carry out this measurement, and it supplies precise, reliable measurement results with a measuring rate of up to 1540 Hz.

10 | Industry EMEA | July 2017

26

The PosCon HM is also the ideal measuring tool for the inspection of metallic, glossy preformed parts, for example the inspection of car doors. The sensors can check the correct form of the car door, for example, by performing measurements at numerous test points. The sensors can also be mounted close beside each other without influencing each other. The PosCon HM provides the measured values directly in mm, thus allowing an immediate OK/Not OK check for each test point. Further information: www.baumer.com/posconhm

As the beamlines operate in vacuum conditions and some positioning systems are held in vacuum chambers, many applications involve UHV vacuum compatibility. Further requirements characteristic of such applications are the exclusive use of non-ferromagnetic materials so as not to influence the instrument's measurement capability. LEROY-SOMER POWERS THE NEW CABLE-CAR TRANSIT SYSTEM IN BREST, AN INNOVATIVE AND ORIGINAL ACHIEVEMENT

A porthole provides passengers with a vertical view of the cable car’s route.

Since 19 November urban mobility in the French city of Brest has been boosted by two cable cars carrying up to 60 people who travel more than 400 meters above the River Penfeld, with a power consumption that is potentially close to zero. Supported by Leroy-Somer, the companies Bartholet France and Seirel are behind this achievement which is a world first in terms of technology.

MORE INFORMATION

B

rest Métropole wants to refocus the city over the banks of the River Penfeld. The cable car system is aimed at strengthening the trade links between both sides of the river. With a range of 420 meters it links the city center with the new Capucins district, which has been built on 16 hectares of former military grounds. The structure designed in accordance with original and innovative technology where the two lines cross over each other via a “flyover” system is a first internationally.

This innovative approach enabled preservation of the Capucins station building, which is protected as a national historical monument. As such the cable cars cross one single steel pylon which integrates into the surrounding environment of dockyards and their cranes. Each car is attached to two carrying cables 50mm in diameter stretched to 88 tones. The counterweight effect generally observed on mountain installations is avoided as the cable cars move simultaneously over most of the route.

The two cable cars cross over each other instead of passing each other at the same level as traditional cable cars do, and they then arrive at the same platform. The scale of the system and the stations, including the ground required, are reduced as a result, thereby also resulting in a reduction in overall civil engineering costs. This is a particular benefit in an urban environment where space is limited.

Low power consumption One of the challenges posed by Brest Métropole involved implementing a solution with low power consumption. The idea was therefore to recover the braking energy, but the energy operators have not yet systematically developed the full potential for reinjection of current into their network. The legislative framework provides for this, for solar energy production for instance, but certainly does not do this when the system consumes and reinjects current over very short cycles, as is the case in Brest. The solution therefore consisted

in storing energy in super capacity batteries when the cable cars are descending, in order to then reuse this energy for the subsequent ascent. The project was awarded to Bartholet France for the cable car system, and to Seirel, an expert in electrical equipment and safety automation, for the transportation via cable. “We made contact with several suppliers, and only LeroySomer had the experience with this type of application, and was also able to provide all of the electromechanical components”, explains Thomas Savin, project manager for Seirel Automatismes.

”This achievement would not have been possible without Leroy-Somer’s expertise in project engineering”, says Guillaume Bourgoint, marketing applications manager for Leroy-Somer. “Through relying on a huge range of motors

“We appreciated Leroy-Somer sharing its expertise and helping us during the project design phase with its solutionbased approach and experience. What’s more, having just one single point of contact responsible for all of the moving components was the perfect guarantee for us in a project as groundbreaking as this one. We specifically wanted one single supplier for the motors and their controls. We have traditionally used a different brand of converter, but configuring the Powerdrive MD2 from Leroy-Somer turned out to be child’s play”, adds Thomas Savin. In the event of network loss, an emergency mode using an electric generator with a LSA 44.3 low voltage alternator, also manufactured by Leroy-Somer, enables the cable cars to be returned to the stations. Safety has been reviewed right down to the last detail in order to ensure protection against any eventualities. “This is the first time a cable car system has included an energy recovery solution with batteries. This achievement is a direct reflection of our company, which is able to position itself on more complex engineering projects, and will no doubt be an inspiration for other projects around the globe”, explains Nicolas Chapuis, Managing Director at Bartholet France.

The heart of the system, i.e. the drive for the traction cables, is driven by two latest generation Leroy-Somer IMfinity LC 315 asynchronous motors (300kW, 1500rpm, 460V) with liquid cooling, assembled as master-slave on the same shaft. This installation provides the additional option of double redundancy since just one of the two motors is enough to continue operations in degraded mode (low speed). The motors are controlled by two Leroy-Somer Powerdrive MD2S inverters, which are in turn supplied by Powerdrive MD2R active front-end rectifiers connected to the power network. A DC converter, also from the LeroySomer range, enables management of the operations for the M65V385F supercapacitors developed by Blue Solutions (Bolloré Group). The supercapacitors have been specially designed to meet the needs of industrial applications requiring high power ratings. As such, linking the IMfinity LC motor, characterized by silent power, with the Powerdrive MD2 inverter, with custom power, seemed like the obvious solution to us given the specifications and constraints of the application”.

The equipment therefore had to be silent and compact for the purposes of the site ergonomics and for passenger comfort. Once again Leroy-Somer stood out against the competitors in this area too with its IMfinity LC motor solutions”, adds Nicolas Chapuis.

With liquid cooling, the IMfinity LC asynchronous motors are up to 25% more compact than a motor cooled using air with equivalent power. Their sound level is also reduced by 10 to 20 dB, thereby enabling optimum acoustic discretion. This benefit is explained by the efficiency of the cooling circuit which surrounds the motor system entirely. Its dependable design and Premium IE3 energy efficiency make it one of the most accomplished motors in the IMfinity range. “The LC series, available from 150kW to 1.5MW, is ideal for all cases where the motor is close to the operators or users of the application. It meets the increasingly urgent need for acoustic comfort related to working equipment for teams in workshops or for users located nearby”, explains Guillaume Bourgoint. Significant benefits The route for this cable car system is particularly suitable for an energy recovery system, as it is implemented initially during ascent and then during descent, with the departure and arrival points both being at an equivalent altitude. 10 | Industry EMEA | July 2017

Energy is consumed in order to arrive at the line’s summit point. Once this point has been crossed, the descent phase constitutes a source of braking energy that can be reinjected into the system in order to supply the ascent once again, thereby resulting in a very significant reduction in energy costs. “This achievement could potentially be used as an example for other industrial applications, such as for lifting”, explains Thomas Savin. “The theoretical energy savings amount to more than 90%, but the main obstacle today relates to the supercapacitors. Here we sized them in order to store around half of the energy required, and this itself represents an investment of 200,000 euros. This cost will probably fall rapidly in the near future”. www.leroy-somer.com www.nidec.com

VERLINDE WIRE ROPE HOIST HELPS UK MOULD SHOP BOOST LIFTING CAPACITY

When a leading UK injection-moulding shop was looking to expand its operational capabilities, the installation of a 12.5-tonne capacity Verlinde Eurobloc VT3 low-headroom electric wire-rope hoist served to boost lifting capacity in line with the company’s developing requirements. The hoist is part of an overhead beam-crane system designed, manufactured and installed by Verlinde’s UK distributor, Pelloby.

Among the challenges facing the installation team from Pelloby was the need to reinforce the existing gantry framework at Avalon Plastics to support the new singlegirder crane. Alterations were required to ensure the stability of the structure and guarantee workplace safety. However, Pelloby was able to carry out these changes with minimal disruption by welding a reinforced plate to the underside of the gantry. The span of the new crane is 17m with 5.4m height of lift.

The Eurobloc VT3 at Avalon is a low-headroom electric wirerope hoist with 12.5-tonne capacity and 9m height of lift. It offers a two-speed hoisting motor (4 and 0.7m/min) with bi-metal sensors, as well as two traverse speeds (20 and 5m/ min). Featuring a total of 13 patents, the design includes a maintenance-free DC disc brake, four-position limit switch (up, down, high-position deceleration and reversed-phase protection), load limiter and handheld radio-controlled operation.

“The older crane which we replaced had fallen into disuse, but the arrival of this new overhead crane has meant that we are once again fully utilising our existing gantry framework,” says Richard Holley, Operations Manager at Avalon Plastics. “We are extremely happy, not only with our new crane and hoist, but with the design, delivery and installation service from Pelloby.”

MORE INFORMATION

ince its formation in 2003, Avalon Plastics Ltd has gone from strength-to-strength and today operates from two UK sites in Ystrad Mynach and Glastonbury. In recent years, Pelloby has worked closely with the company on a series of projects involving new crane systems. During the most recent expansion, Avalon realised it was going to require an additional heavy-duty lifting solution and was attracted to a proposal from Pelloby for an overhead beam crane featuring a Verlinde Eurobloc VT3 hoist.
