CAR INDUSTRY ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING IS MOVING RAPIDLY TOWARDS VOLUME PRODUCTION Car manufacturers are showing serious interest in additive manufacturing of metal parts in volume. All of them are conducting tests, setting up pilot production units and refining their strategy. Author: Sofiane JEDIDI

n paper, additive manufacturing processes seem certain to flourish in the years to come. They make it possible to produce metal parts from a simple CAD file without requiring tools and machining sequences. This prospect was sure to attract the attention of car manufacturers. However, there is always a step needed between theory and/or tests in an R&D environment and actual industrial deployment. And processes which have been demonstrated in the controlled conditions of a laboratory may not necessarily perform identically or be reproduced at scale in a production environment. Even if car manufacturers cannot take the risk of ignoring this technology, they also cannot abandon their traditional production methods like milling or forging, which have been proven over several decades, and replace them with technologies, which no matter how promising, are still far from mature.

In spite of the fact that these new processes appear to meet the required objectives in terms of quality and mechanical stability, they lack profitability when producing of large volumes of metal components. However they seem to yield better repeatability, which is an advantage when there is a need to produce identical parts in different sites. Most car manufacturers have already carried out tests on prototypes, apparently with promising results. Some have even started manufacturing very small series of parts for racing cars or those requiring a high level of customization. Others, like Daimler are now seriously thinking about the production of spare parts. There are only a few manufacturers like BMW and Daimler who are betting on the industrialization of these processes in the near future for the mass production of parts for standard vehicles. The constraints of additive manufacturing The main constraints of additive manufacturing are its low productivity and the limits in the size of the metal parts produced. 3D printing is currently only possible for small parts with complex shapes, up to 100 mm in diameter and weighing not more than 400 g. Laser fusion, however, can

handle parts that reach lengths of 600 to 700 mm. The mechanical structure of the parts obtained is perfectly satisfactory. However it is still not possible to expect the machines to output ready-to-use parts. A range of sintering, finishing or surface treatment operations is needed. This means that additive manufacturing is still impacted by its low productivity and even further by these additional finishing tasks. All these factors tend to induce car manufacturers not to rush into this technology. Its adoption is also countered by the force of habit and confidence invested in traditional manufacturing processes. Nevertheless, none of the car manufacturers seem to want to turn their backs on the future. All of them are looking closely both at the potential and the progress accomplished by additive manufacturing. It is clearly an attractive proposition for manufacturing complex parts. Since it has a higher cost than traditional processes, all opportunities to mitigate this have to be exploited to the maximum by increasing the number of functions in the part. Designers also have to be aware that they can create shapes like lattice structures or internal channels with complex forms that could not be implemented otherwise. Because of this, additive manufacturing is attracting considerable interest from car manufacturers for components used for fluid draining and for filtering. Another advantage of additive manufacturing: because it only uses the exact quantity of material needed to make the part, this makes it lighter. This is a major advantage, especially for manufacturers of motor components since weight has an impact on the vehicle's fuel consumption.
The weight reduction potential, which can be up to 50% for certain parts, becomes ever more essential in the case of electric vehicles, since the target mileage range depends partly on vehicle mass. Nevertheless: “for production volumes of 70,000 to 100,000 units, costs remain significantly higher and the targeted weight reduction is not a strong enough argument”, remarks Fabian Krauß, Business Development Manager Automotive at EOS. “For although aircraft manufacturers are ready to invest €15,000 to gain a weight reduction of 1 kg, car manufacturers are only prepared to spend €15.” This means that additive manufacturing has to act on several costsaving levers in order to come out in front, for example by integrating additional functions to the part or by reducing assembly costs. 3D metal printing Wide-scale adoption of additive manufacturing in the mass production of parts is a vision which is still far off from becoming reality. Progress has to be made in terms of productivity and profitability. A first step seems to have been taken with the arrival of a new type of 3D metal printing. This manufacturing process, which applies a binding resin on a layer of powder, will make it possible to produce a so-called green part which then has to undergo a process of unbinding and then sintering. It will enable faster throughput rates compared to traditional laser fusion techniques. Desktop Metal for example, an American manufacturer, has announced that they will introduce a 3D metal printing

system in 2018 for volume production of parts of up to 330 mm x 330 mm x 330 mm in size. The machine can achieve production rates of up to 8200 cm3/h, which according to the manufacturer is 100 times faster than laser-based processes. They even claim that the use of a lower-cost powder, higher throughput and simplified post-processing results in unit costs that are competitive with traditional manufacturing processes and are up to 20 times lower than current 3D metal printing systems. Laser systems, however, retain the advantage of having a greater build volume. The Atlas system announced in 2017 by GE Additive for example, offers a build envelope of 1,100 x 1,100 x 300 mm. Different industrial strategies The BMW Group has been included as one of Desktop Metal's strategic partners, to speed up its adoption in the car industry. “We were one of the first to invest in the company, after recognizing the potential of its technology,” declared Uwe Higgen, associate director of BMW i Ventures. And Jens Ertel, Head of the Additive Manufacturing Centre of the German group added: “For us, it was evident that additive manufacturing could be used for more than just simple prototyping. We are researching materials and technologies. We are trying to find out for which projects and parts additive manufacturing is profitable and meets our standards. When we see the progress in the machines and materials, we can anticipate how this will continue. With Desktop Metal we plan not only for high speed prototyping but also mass production of automotive parts. Vision of an advanced factory: AGVs transfer workpieces from one production island to another.
printing is evidently mass production. Future generations of machines will be able to produce a much larger number of components in a shorter time. This means that we will be able to increase profitability as well as precision and benefit from its potential for reduced weight and tool-less production. As well as BMW, Daimler is also one of the manufacturers who are demonstrating their belief in additive manufacturing. The car manufacturer, a subsidiary of Airbus Premium Aerotec and the 3D printer manufacturer EOS have announced a partnership in 2017 to phase 3D metal printing into the production stage. The goal of their NextGenAM project is to develop an automated manufacturing system for mass production. To reduce costs and to allow it to be adopted in production more rapidly, they are aiming to reduce overall production time, including the pre- and post-printing processes which are usually manual and represent 70% of the total cost of additive manufacturing. In this way, the speed disadvantage of additive manufacturing can be offset by optimizing, automating and fluidifying the production process. Production of spare parts and tools New ways of manufacturing have to be found which are suited to the specific conditions of additive manufacturing. The three manufacturers have invested several million euros in this project which has resulted in the construction of an automated additive manufacturing unit in Premium Aerotec's technology centre in Varel, Germany. Daimler will also contribute its expertise in manufacturing lightweight aerospace parts. These parts are to be manufactured using a laser printing system on a media which is extracted and then transported automatically by an auto-guided vehicle (AGV) to the machining stations for finishing, tempering, etc. By eliminating manual operations and reducing the delays between steps, it may be possible to offset the lower productivity of the additive manufacturing process. The first part to be manufactured in low volume will be an automotive part from Mercedes-AMG, for whom reduced weight is essential. Daimler is also counting on the potential of additive manufacturing for the production of spare parts. “Our objective is to totally transform our spare part management process using 3D printing,” states Ralf Anderhofstadt, Head of Project CSP 3D Printing at Daimler Buses. Over the long term, it's about making parts more easily available in cases where up till now it was impossible to react quickly, and to reduce costs as well as delivery times. This will give us a competitive advantage. We've identified more than 300 plastic parts which are good candidates, as well as a hundred metal parts. Their production started in summer 2017.”

Volkswagen seems to be acting more prudently than its competitors in the area of additive manufacturing. Ingo Hartmann, coordinator of the additive manufacturing activities of the group, indicates that in spite of its advantages, 3D metal printing is still limited to specific application areas due to its cost and relative slowness and because dimensional accuracy and finishing quality still needs to be improved. According to him, 3D printing is currently only profitable for production series of up to 200 units but with process optimizations it should become profitable for series of 3,000 parts. 13 | Industry EMEA | February 2018

BMW Group Named First International Strategic Partner to Receive the Studio System BMW Group’s additive manufacturing team works closely together with Desktop Metal to accelerate market adoption. “Metal additive manufacturing has already impacted the automotive industry mainly in prototyping. Currently, we are further expanding the use of metal additive manufacturing in multiple applications. Starting with design to cost-effective mass production, which is the most challenging application where material and process qualification, design, performance and cost-per-part are crucial for our success. Together with Desktop Metal, we are working on challenging the status quo of metal additive manufacturing. We are looking into uncovering the potential for both the Studio System for functional prototypes and the Production System for high-speed prototyping and mass production of BMW Group automotive parts,” said Jens Ertel head of BMW Group’s Additive Manufacturing Center in Munich.

However, via its subsidiary Audi, Volkswagen is taking part in the race. According to Alois Brandt, Head of Technology Development Innovation Management, the Group has evaluated ways to print metal car parts in low volumes. For him, there is still a long way to go before the technology can support a high rate of throughput. “For the Audi A4 for example, we would have had to install more than 1000 printers and run them at maximum speed only to end up manufacturing parts that would have been more expensive than with the current process.” Audi considers that 3D printing is mainly worthwhile for manufacturing tools and small production series. For now, 3D manufacturing is still slow and expensive and it is also limited in terms of the dimensions of the parts produced. The largest of the three printers in Audi's 3D metal printing centre can build parts of up to 400 mm in length. It takes a whole day to manufacture a metal tube weighing about 1 kg and added to this is the time needed to program and prepare the machine as well as the subsequent finishing operations. The 3D metal printing centre therefore focuses on the production of steel and aluminium tools from metal powder using laser fusion. Nevertheless, Audi expects that rapid advances in this technology in the years to come will make it potentially more attractive for manufacturing parts for limited series vehicle models. While waiting for the technological breakthrough, they are building up their know-how in the area of aluminium printing. Several car parts have been manufactured, such as components with porous structures that incorporate fluid reservoirs as well as the first suspension components.

CETIM ANALYZES INNOVATIVE PROCESSES AND THEIR PERFORMANCE Based on an interview with Christophe GROSJEAN, CETIM. Productivity: 3D metal printing outperforms laser fusion Additive manufacturing encompasses a group of technologies which build a three-dimensional object based on its CAD file by adding material in an iterative fashion, in contrast to machining techniques that work by removing material. Processes exist for all types of material: metals, ceramics, polymers etc.

“Manufacturing metal parts using additive technology always requires finishing operations, removing the support, cutting out, stress relief, etc. Thermal post treatment in particular can be used to improve the mechanical properties of the part and reduce the residual stresses which are an important issue for laser beam melting technologies” explains the CETIM, which has been working on additive manufacturing and its technological transfer for more than 15 years. 3D Metal printing is quite different from additive manufacturing using laser fusion. It is performed in two phases. The first is the shaping of the part by superimposing layers of bound powder held together by a binder and extruded by a multi-jet printing head. A second phase is required to obtain a part with the desired resistance. After having eliminated the binder by combustion (de-binding), the so-called “green” part is consolidated and densified in a sintering furnace to cause the metal particle to link together and form a functional metal component. This method has several advantages compared to laser fusion. “While laser fusion does not permit parts to be placed on top of each other, 3D metal printing operates in a build chamber which allows the parts to be stacked and thus a larger quantity can be produced in the same production lot.” points out the CETIM. In conjunction with the faster build speed, this significantly increases productivity. Another benefit: 3D metal printing can process parts without requiring special supports during the build phase, independently of the surface angles. This results in significant gains in the finishing phase (limiting the cost of machining the parts) as well as in the design and implementation phase.

Overall, according to the CETIM, 3D metal printing achieves better productivity and a lower cost compared to laser fusion. This is in spite of the need for the sintering operation because laser fusion needs more steps to perform part finishing. In addition, to boost build speed in 3D printing, all that needs to be done is to increase the number of print heads. Adding more laser sources would be more difficult to implement and would result in significantly greater cost. For these reasons, 3D printing has a great deal of potential in the development and manufacture of small parts with complex shapes.
The CETIM is very active in the field of additive manufacturing in order to support and advise manufacturers in a continuous process of change.

ADVANTECH EXPAND EUROPEAN SERVICE CENTER TO SUPPORT REGIONAL GROWTH The world leader in industrial and embedded computing solutions, has expanded its European Service Center in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

ontinuous growth in the European Market led Advantech to the plans in 2017 to enlarge both the production, logistic and office facilities that are set to open in January 2018. Next to housing nearly 150 employees, the high-tech building will also serve as a demo site, displaying the latest of Advantech’s service IOT and Industry 4.0 applications. The announcement follows the opening of Advantech’s new Sweden office, its 12th in Europe, with no. 13 to open in Barcelona soon. All of Advantech’s modern field offices support the firm’s ambitious growth plans over the years, targeting an annual € 350 MIO revenue in year 2025. ENERGY FROM WASTE PLANT CHOOSES LEROY SOMER FOR ALTERNATOR OVERHAUL - GENERATOR RESTORED TO ‘AS-NEW’ PERFORMANCE LEVELS IN FLAWLESS OVERHAUL
When a major integrated waste management facility (IWMF) based in Lincolnshire, UK, discovered that the alternator mounted on the rear of its main steam turbine was becoming increasingly contaminated with dirt and dust, the plant’s technical team took the decision to commission a total overhaul of the system.

eroy Somer, the manufacturer of the alternator, won the tender for the overhaul based on its OEM status and level of expertise. The work took place at Leroy Somer’s Orléans facility, France, and was completed successfully within a strict three-week window, working first time upon reinstallation and now operating at ‘as-new’ performance levels.

In 1999 Newlincs entered into a 25-year contract with North East Lincolnshire Council to manage its household and municipal waste. Jointly operated by Grimsby Operations Ltd, a subsidiary of TIRU, the IWMF started operation in 2003, processing 56,000 tons of municipal solid waste per year. Electric power generation for use on site (and for export) is performed by a steam turbine coupled to a LeroySomer LSA 56 alternator delivering 4700kVA and 11kV. Through the incineration of waste and the use of heat to produce electricity, the IWMF produces a quantity of energy equivalent to that used by 10,000 families.

“Clearly, the steam turbine is a core element of operations at our combined heat and power plant,” states Plant Manager Stephen Gilbert.“So when we noticed that the alternator was becoming heavily contaminated, it raised some concerns. As it has been running pretty much non-stop since 2003, we opted to raise a tender for its total overhaul. In fact, this idea was first recommended to us by a visiting Leroy-Somer technician during a visit in 2013.” Although in very good condition, the alternator had already run for 71,000 hours, with experience suggesting that an overhaul every 40,000 running hours pays dividends in terms of performance and efficiency. In 2016, Newlincs decided it should wait no longer and scheduled a major overhaul. Leroy-Somer, which was among the bidders for the tender, dispatched a technical expert from its Orléans factory, where the machine had been manufactured, to evaluate the project and provide further recommendations.

Based on its proposal, Leroy-Somer won the tender for an all-inclusive service from on-site shutdown to on-site recommissioning. Commencing the process, vibration and electrical measurements were taken on the alternator before de-commissioning for reference. The machine was then shut down, de-coupled from the turbine, disconnected and prepared for transportation. Removing the turbine and alternator required cutting open the plant room roof and lifting out the equipment using a 200T crane. The generator was then shipped to Orléans by Leroy-Somer, where it underwent overhaul operations. Following disassembly and inspection, the windings were thoroughly cleaned and steamed, and underwent impregnation to renew varnish on the coils. The terminal box was also fully cleaned and all connectors tested. After reassembly, the complete alternator was tested on the factory bench, with electrical performance compared against initial tests performed in 2003. The overhauled alternator was then shipped back to the UK and re-commissioned, where it showed the same performance level as when it was manufactured 15 years earlier. “The alternator returned on-schedule and worked first time following reinstallation and recommissioning,” confirms Mr Gilbert. “We’ve had no issues at all with its performance since the overhaul, which is essential as we require the generator to run for 8000 hours a year, producing electricity for the whole site as well as 2.5MW for export.”
“The key factor in this project was turnaround time,” says Mr Gilbert. “We had a limited and strict three-week window of downtime in which the system would need to be uninstalled, overhauled, refitted and recommissioned – without fail. We liked the idea of using the alternator OEM for the overhaul as this introduces confidence into the process, along with a high level of expertise. They also had an interesting proposal regarding the location of the overhaul.” Leroy-Somer offered to perform the overhaul in Orléans, which although at first may seem counter-intuitive, in fact makes full sense. The Orléans factory is equipped with efficient vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) equipment, guaranteeing high-quality windings, as well as a fully operational test bench that can perform on-load measurements. Furthermore, all steps of the process would be performed by experts who build alternators on a daily basis.
Leroy-Somer Service is a global organisation with facilities in Asia, America and Europe that provide premium repair and remanufacturing services for all alternator types up to 40MW. Supported by an international network of certified partners, the organisation also supplies spare parts, maintenance and on-site intervention services. About VPI Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) is the process of forcing a special insulating resin into the windings under vacuum pressure conditions, resulting in total winding encapsulation. This process provides superior results in comparison with gravity-based methods as it eliminates the risk of air bubbles forming in narrow areas. Furthermore, VPI-treated windings offer better electrical performance and resist aggressive atmospheric conditions such as dust, damp and salt, ensuring system longevity.

“If you consider the project in its entirety,” explains Eric Delabarre, Service Engineer at Leroy Somer, “transportation is neither the biggest challenge nor a decisive cost centre. It’s everything that happens in-between that’s important: on-site removal, workshop impregnation and testing, and final commissioning. Using factory equipment allows us to provide the best possible service at an affordable cost, all with very good turnaround times.”
In May 2017, exactly one year after the alternator recommissioning, the Leroy-Somer service team was back at the Newlincs site for a yearly health check of the system. The test routine to check mechanical and electrical indicators led to the detection of a potential problem on the diode bridge, which in turn could have led to a general failure and shutdown of the whole installation. As a preventive maintenance measure, a new diode bridge was ordered and installed on the generator. The Leroy-Somer Service team will return to site on a yearly basis to produce a report on operating condition.

“We took the toughness of our most popular milling grades KC725M and X500 and increased the thermal crack resistance and wear resistance that will enable our customers to machine at higher cutting speeds without sacrificing toughness” says Scott Etling, Director of Global Product Management, for Indexable Milling at Kennametal. The target cutting speed for KCSM40 in Ti6Al4V was 175 SFM (53 m/min) while achieving a greater than 20 cubic inches per minute (327 cm^3/min) metal removal rate for 60 minutes. Not only has KCSM40 achieved this but has results milling titanium at speeds up to 270 SFM (85 m/min) at a lower radial depth of cut. Etling says the radial engagement of the milling cutter to the work piece is one key component when optimizing the cutting speed. “At higher radial engagements, the insert is cutting the material for longer time which creates more heat at the cutting zone. The heat will not go into the titanium chips like when milling steels so controlling the heat is critical. Lower cutter speeds at higher radial engagements is a good practice. At lower radial engagements, higher cutting speeds can be achieved.”

Still looking good after over 100 minutes of machining Ti6Al4V at 155 SFM (47 m/min) with a .0067 ipt (.12 mm/t) chip load. The radial depth of cut was 1.0” (25 mm) and the axial depth of cut was 3” (76 mm).

Precise measuring instruments are needed to avoid mistakes occurring due to the incredibly quick cycle times required in modern production. For this, the manufacturer Omron Adept Technologies GmbH of Dortmund relies on systems made by Wachendorff Automation.

Small, mobile robots speed around almost without a sound – nothing more than snatches of the English language over a conference table. If it were not for the coffee machine in the black and yellow of Borussia Dortmund, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d ended up somewhere in Silicon Valley. Instead, we’re in the middle of Dortmund – in the application laboratory of Omron Adept Technologies, one of the world’s leading producers of industrial robots – with a HQ which is actually in California.
The European HQ for sales, service and training has been based here since 1986. In the local laboratory, most of the company's products – with names of the tenor of Cobra or Hornet – can be found in operation. “What we do here more than anything else is conduct feasibility studies,” explains head trainer Günter Graß. “If a customer is looking for an automation solution, then she or he can come here to perform tests, such as those to ascertain whether our robots provide the required cycle times,” he explains. Automation tasks have become much more complex in recent years and the desired cycle times have become much shorter – these days, customers demand highly efficient solutions. Within a fraction of a second, these solutions have to recognise, pick and place correctly. There are many ways of doing this. Small parts are often handled using compressed air. Others have to be grasped carefully. For yet others, it’s important that they are placed in a specific position. Often, it’s not done with pure conveyor and feeder technology. Packaging systems for magazines, for instance, ensure automatically that a give-away is attached to each

In order to precisely coordinate the detection range of the camera and the movement of the gripper, it is important to measure the belt speed accurately. Only when this is known can the control system calculate when the work pieces reach the gripper and thus when they can be received. Although there are systems that decrease the belt speed directly at the motor – external influences such as band slippage are not taken into account with these. In addition to shorter cycle times, maximum precision is also key. This can only be reached if speed is decreased directly on the belt – as close as possible to the workpiece.
“We were looking for a solution that’s universally deployable, because our products find a use in many different sectors, right up to the food industry,” explained the applications
The new length measuring systems – comprising a patented spring arm, rotary encoder measuring wheel and mounting bracket – were ordered straight away. The high expectations for this order were totally fulfilled. “It’s especially practical that the contact pressure can be adjusted via the resolution on the base plate,” says Graß, explaining why the system is so precise and why slippages can be avoided. A special spring ensures that the contact pressure remains constant in the long run. In the new systems, the preload of the spring is adjustable in steps of 5 N up to a maximum 30 N preload. The measurement system is mounted using a base plate and screws. The clearance for these is adjusted to the standard mounting profiles. The measurement system can be connected quickly and easily to the base plate with a captive central screw. If there are no direct installation options on the plant, various installation positions can be achieved using the highly-adjustable angle bracket.

THE INSTALLATION OF A MOTORIZED VERLINDE EUROSTYLE VFM JIB CRANE AND OF A GRAB HAVE TRANSFORMED THE RECYCLING PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF CORRUGATED BOARD AT THE SICAL PAPER MILL
SICAL is a paper and board manufacturer specialized in the production of corrugated board derived from diverse recycled materials collected from used paper recovery networks. This material for processing is delivered in the form of heterogeneous bales that have to be opened and depolluted which means that diverse non-recyclable materials such as plastic or metal they contain must be extracted.

he main challenge for the transformation of SICAL's production process was focused on its capacity to reprocess heavily pollluted waste, particularly category 3 waste (recyclable household packaging - EMR in French) while ensuring operator safety. The installation of a Verlinde jib crane fitted with an electric hoist and grab was found to be the solution to this challenge.
Frequent production downtime and safety problems The process of recycling starts with the de-stringing of bales that are then steeped in water in a pulverizer, a tank in which the material is mixed to reduce the fibre content. Gradually, during the process, bales are added, the pulp is extracted by suction from the bottom of the tank through fine screens while the waste remains suspended. When the volume of waste reaches approximately 1m3, the tank is drained. SICAL in this way processes some 150 tonnes of recylced paper daily to obtain paper packed in the form of 3-tonne reels that will be subsequently used for the manufacture of corrugated cardboard. Prior to the process change, SICAL would regularly encounter problems with waste that accumulated at the bottom of the tank and prevented draining. An operator then had to manually unclog the mass of matter accumulated at the bottom of the pulverizer. The operation presented problems of safety and of frequent process downtime.

The increase in the volume of waste to be processed worsened the problem still more, and the process was considered to be inappropriate. The installation of a jib crane, a hoist and a grab enhances the process while ensuring the safety of personnel. SICAL assigned Verlinde and its partner HERIPRET the task of installing a motorized EUROSTYLE VFM jib crane with a 3-fall electric chain hoist (fitted with a control pendant) on which is mounted a grab dedicated to paper industry applications. VERLINDE defined the requirements while HERIPRET carried out the installation work. Idem for the electrical installation.
But above all, the recycling process has been enhanced as SICAL can now process category 3 waste, i.e. recyclable household packaging (EMR in French) from selective sorting centres. As this material is only roughly sorted before delivery at the paper mill it contains a certain percentage of pollutant waste that SICAL is able to process rapidly without difficulty thanks to the jib crane and grab. The purchase price of category 3 EMR waste per tonne is much lower than that of category 1 and 2 waste processed hitherto, so production costs are reduced in no small way. What is more, due to the change of processing, SICAL has been able to increase its contribution to environment protection. SICAL already used Verlinde suspended cranes for other applications and has since followed up with the installation of additional electric winches. The installation has resulted in Satisfaction and Trust between the parties.

T
he main challenge for the transformation of SICAL's production process was focused on its capacity Multiplast is conveniently located near the port of Vannes in the Gulf of Morbihan. The company has been designing and building monohulls and multihulls in hightech composite materials since1981. Craft built at this naval shipyard have proved to be outstanding for their performance and the awards they have won including an Atlantic crossing record, the Jules Verne trophy and the Route du Rhum, not to mention the Volvo Ocean Race. 2009 marked the year the company decided to diversify production by targeting industries that were now starting to benefit from the advantages of composite materials for their products. Multiplast’s current workforce is 110. Three naval architects work closely with seven design engineers and the R&D director on the use of new materials for the manufacture of increasingly cost-effective composite components. On the production line, seven team supervisors and some fifty workers are thoroughly conversant with all composite material lamination techniques. epoxy resin and foam filled honeycomb. These techniques have enabled Multiplast to build boat hulls or parts and components of any shape or dimension for industry. For instance, the central hull of the trimarin Sodébo was fabricated in one single piece 32 metres long. The new facility dedicated to the manufacture of products for industry Industry as a whole depends on the use of parts made from composite materials. Even if aerospace and defence were the first sectors to incorporate carbon based composite materials for reasons of weight and toughness, motor racing and railways no longer lag behind. Unexpected applications for these materials are the building industry with the erection of the domes of the Orthodox Cultural and Spiritual Centre in Paris, or the luxury industry with the fabrication of a chandelier and wall lamps for Baccarat. was launched, the rail tracks for the travel of the two cranes were integrated in the structure. The two girder-type overhead cranes each carry two autonomous VERLINDE EUROCHAIN VR2 two-speed hoists with a lifting capacity of 1 tonne. The two cranes and four hoists are used together or separately to move or turn over parts made of composite materials, albeit of low weight but very often of significant dimensions.

Travel length for each crane is 30m and travel width 17m, with a hook height of 8m. Power supply for the overhead cranes is provided conventionally by a power rail but for the four hoists a trailing cable fulfils the function. Both cranes and its hoists are radio-controlled and in addition to the safety features incorporated in the EUROCHAIN VR2 hoists, optical limit switches have been added to the conventional mechanical stops in order to prevent any possible impact between cranes and hoists.
