SIMPLE TO RETROFIT: EASY TOOL-ID FROM BALLUFF ECONOMICAL ENTRY LEVEL SOLUTION FOR TOOL MANAGEMENT
Tool identification using Balluff Industrial RFID increases production efficiency, as it makes incorrect tool allocation or missing tools a thing of the past. This enables optimizing the service time utilization of the tools. In addition, scrap and rework due to excessive use of tools are virtually eliminated. With Easy Tool-ID Balluff now offers an economical entry into tool management. It is simple to retrofit and stands out with easy installation and configuration.
A
ll this is required is a USB port (keyboard expander) on the machine tool and a presetter. The data are written via RFID technology from the presetter to the tool and then passed on through the Easy Tool-ID system to the machine tool. Manual entry is eliminated. Setup times and the risk of incorrect entries are significantly reduced. The system consists of a tool stand with integrated read/write head, a processor unit, a microcontroller and the power supply.
The solution's handling and functional principle could not be easier: At the tool presetter, each tool is measured and its data, such as diameter and radius, are written on the data carrier on the tool shank. The user simply brings the tool to the machine, places it in the tool holder and presses a key. The system then emulates the key input and automatically reads the data with the Balluff Tool-ID through the keyboard interface to the machine controller. Manual, error-prone entry is thus eliminated. This means that even existing machines can be modernized and upgraded with a costeffective tool ID solution. MORE INFORMATION

MID IN POLE POSITION
Smoke detector concept based on 3D MID. The battery holder is integrated directly in the molded part.
Three-dimensional molded interconnect devices.
T
hree-dimensional molded interconnect devices are a welcome addition to conventional printed circuit boards and are particularly well suited to Industry 4.0 applications. The example of a smoke detector illustrates how design and functional integration are simplified with this technology.
MORE INFORMATION
Whether rigid or flexible, printed circuit boards are a virtually indispensable part of electronic devices as interconnect devices. Plastic molded interconnect devices (MIDs) offer many advantages with regard to connection technology, including the combination of electrical and mechanical functions in a single component. This makes it possible to use the housing and other molded inner structures as an interconnect device, sometimes eliminating the need for a PCB.
Three-dimensional functional integration The MID is a multifunctional component with sensors arranged and aligned with a high precision combined with an RFID antenna for sending and receiving signals. This concentration of functions on a single carrier material enables development engineers to create threedimensional microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). MIDs are ideally suited for this purpose, particularly when manufacturing large and very large volumes. MID technology in detail Three-dimensional MIDs are manufactured using the LDS (laser direct structuring) method: The shape of the interconnect device desired by the customer is created in a single-component injection molding process, which offers virtually unlimited freedom for three-dimensional design. While conventional printed circuit boards use FR4 fiberglass fabric or similar base material, molded interconnect devices are built from thermoplastics. The thermoplastic base material is first compounded with a (nonconductive) laseractivated metal-organic additive.
15 | Industry USA | July 2017
16
NEWS
Flexible printed circuit boards are often a suitable solution for bypassing physical distances at changing angles but for the precise positioning and fixing of sensors such as Halleffect sensors or LED lighting on Flex, this incurs extra costs. The MID component enables possibilities in the microscale and is unbeatable here, with the precise positioning of components and defined angles in arrangements being easy to realize. To achieve a fully realized MID product, antennas or shields can be attached to the carrier and connected to the circuit. Circuit density has been achieved in large series production with an 80¾m circuit trace / 80¾m space and contributes to greater opportunity for miniaturization. Example: smoke detectors Today's smoke detectors are ideally suited for upgrading to MID technology. The carrier material for smoke detectors today is made up of plastic components and provides a molded part to which the components may be fixed. MID technology enables significant simplification of the design and the functional integration associated with the smoke detector. The battery holder is integrated directly in the MID part, thus forming all the metal contacts. The two connecting cables and the elaborate soldering process for bonding are now redundant. Standard SMDs can be soldered directly to the plastic, thereby saving costs while also allowing placement to be performed using pick-andplace machines, reducing personnel expenses for the assembly process to a minimum. The number of components is also reduced to a minimum – the printed circuit board is no longer required and circuit paths inscribed directly on the plastic replace the wires, which means that connecting plugs are also not needed.
The LDS laser beam structures the circuit pattern onto the device by cleaving the metal-organic additives while roughening and ablating the plastic precisely where the beam strikes the surface. Copper seeds split out from the additive, attracting free copper in the subsequent metallization step. In the following electroless metallization process within a copper bath the copper seeds created in the lasering step now attract solid copper out of solution. After copper plating, electroless nickel and immersion gold (ENIG) layers may be added to the copper layer. When an MID is not soldered or bonded, nickel alone over copper is sufficient. ENIG metallization ensures good surface properties for designs where SMT soldering or Wire-Bonded component placement is desired.
Proven in industry Three-dimensional MID technology has long been tried and tested in industry. It was first employed for the challenges of spatial antenna construction, as well as for expanding frequency ranges, integration densities and available installation spaces for high-frequency applications. Molded interconnect devices are suitable for 3D antennas in frequency ranges exceeding 6 GHz, reliable for Bluetooth, LTE or Wi-Fi applications. Antennas manufactured using this procedure can be found in billions of smartphones, tablets and other portable devices. Millions of mobile payment terminals also contain MID solutions. All known areas of industry in which currents flow or shielding is necessary harbor countless possible applications for molded interconnect devices. Furthermore, the mechatronic advantages of the technology enable holders to be designed for energy sources such as button batteries, making the interconnect device an elegant solution.
MORE INFORMATION
Potential of the technology In modern connection technology, engineers use flex or rigid-flex printed circuit boards or wires if an electrical connection is to be established between several printed circuit boards in various positions and alignments. Here the core benefits of the MIDs allows a reduced number of parts, resulting in process, material, and logistics savings while at the same time raising quality with the reduction of assembly steps and expenses. MID technology holds enormous potential for functionally oriented product development with optimized manufacturing processes.
Moreover, it is easy to integrate antennas in order to network the smoke detectors. By adapting the laser programming, any antenna structure can be applied directly to the same carrier material. Last but not least, because the MID technology eliminates the need for mechanical switches, it is simple to metallize a capacitive surface and use it as a capacitive switch.

ON THE WAY UP – LIFTS WITH HENGSTLER SAFETY RELAYS
If we are to believe what experts from the CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) are telling us, the future of building technology is going to rise to new heights. During the next ten years, the number of buildings over 200 meters tall is forecasted to double, and by the year 2020, the number of skyscrapers over 600 metres will surge from two to ten.
T
MORE INFORMATION
he estimation made by the CTBUH is further supported by the clear megatrend to urbanisation throughout the world. At the same time, the market for high speed lifts is growing enormously. Meanwhile, safety standards for lift design and operation are continuously being raised. Starting on 1 September, the EN 81-1 and EN 81-2 norms for lifts will be replaced by EN 81-20 and EN 81-50.
15 | Industry USA | July 2017
18
What is the detailed impact of adapting to the new norms? The goal is even better protection for passengers and maintenance personnel. As well as flame-retardant cars and improved protection against pinching by lift doors, larger refuge spaces for maintenance personnel have to be created in the shaft pit and on the cabin roof. Here, Hengstler can use the H-480 safety relay to its full advantage, to give maximum support to lift manufacturers as they adapt to the future safety guidelines. The new product family of safety relays was developed with the customers’ needs foremost in mind and taking the requirements of each different market into account. The heat dissipation from the relays has been significantly reduced, thanks to the low coil power. Insulation between each of the relay's six contacts has also been reinforced. One major advantage, appreciated above all by designers, is its low height. This opens up a range of new choices when selecting suitable printed circuit boards. The different available pin arrangements enable a variety of options, including the use of already existing PCB layouts, which help satisfy the requirement for 2nd source supplier solutions. Higher and higher buildings are being built in a
NEWS
huge variety of places across the globe. Whether in the hot deserts of Saudi Arabia or the cold regions of Russia, lift technology has to function reliably everywhere. Hengstler safety relays easily satisfy this requirement. The ambient temperature can range from -25 to +75 °C. In future, even more people will ride in faster and faster lifts. To ensure that passengers and maintenance personnel are transported safely depends on high quality and reliable components. For safe opening and closing of lift doors, they must only be enabled when the car is stopped. At the same time, fast entry and exit is becoming more and more important. This trend is referred to as comfort control. It allows the lift doors to open a few centimetres before the final stop position, to enable faster passenger changeover. This dynamic and yet safe type of control is naturally supported by Hengstler safety relays.
Riding in a lift has never been faster, more efficient or more comfortable. And in future, new records in terms of speed and traffic numbers will be set. Safety relays have a special role to play in safely transporting passengers and maintenance personnel. With H-480, Hengstler's newest family of relays, lift manufacturers can avail of the latest components, capable of handling all today’s and future requirements. www.hengstler.com
MORE INFORMATION
For maintenance personnel to inspect the lift shaft when performing maintenance, they must be able to operate the lift with the cabin door open. For this purpose, it has to be possible to disable the safety systems. During normal operation, this safety loophole is blocked by a safety relay, but when operating the lift with doors open, maintenance personnel can still stop the lift at any time by pressing the emergency stop button.

DE DIETRICH PROCESS SYSTEMS IN MAINZ, GERMANY HAS MANUFACTURED THE BIGGEST GLASS BOTTLE OF THE WORLD!
The QVF® competence centre in Mainz/Germany of De Dietrich Process Systems is well-known for its unique ability to manufacture equipment made of borosilicate glass 3.3 up to a nominal diameter of DN1000 for the chemical industry.
T
his time we took advantage of our ability to produce the probably biggest glass bottle in world:
• Nominal width: DN1000 • Height: 298 cm • Bottle neck: DN300 • Nominal volume: 1700 l • Dry weight: 370 kg This glass component is a master stroke and was due to its extreme size also a challenge for our entire workshop in Mainz. It is even bigger than the wine bottle we made in 1993 for an exhibition in Saint-Cloud, France.
MORE INFORMATION
The bottle DN1000 was certified by the “RID REKORDINSTITUT fuer DEUTSCHLAND GmbH” as the “World's biggest glass bottle”.

QUALITY CONTROL OF RUBBER SEALS ON THE BASIS OF HEIGHT MEASUREMENTS
Smart at-Line quality control of rubber seals with PosCon HM.
The measurement of object height is an important aspect in quality control applications. With the PosCon HM light-section sensor, Baumer offers a unique, compact measuring device for this kind of tasks.
T
he smart, pre-configured profile sensor offers five measurement modes for different measurement tasks. An exact positioning of the measured objects is not required. The PosCon HM provides reliable measurements even on shiny and very dark surfaces. In conjunction with its high measuring accuracy of up to 2 Îźm, it is suitable for a large number of applications in at-line, off-line and in-line control.
Further information: www.baumer.com/posconhm
MORE INFORMATION
One example is the inspection of black rubber seals for side windows in the automobile industry. In this case, random samples are tested off-line on a special test bench. The seals are fitted into special mounts on a measuring setup. The forms and the curves of the seal may vary, but they must not exceed special limit values. The challenge for the sensors is not only the form, or, to be more precise, the curves, but also the black, light-absorbing material. In the PosCon HM, powerful algorithms analyze up to 600 items of height information per measurement and determine the maximum height of the object, irrespective of its position. Only the PosCon HM makes it possible to carry out this measurement, and it supplies precise, reliable measurement results with a measuring rate of up to 1540 Hz.
The PosCon HM is also the ideal measuring tool for the inspection of metallic, glossy preformed parts, for example the inspection of car doors. The sensors can check the correct form of the car door, for example, by performing measurements at numerous test points. The sensors can also be mounted close beside each other without influencing each other. The PosCon HM provides the measured values directly in mm, thus allowing an immediate OK/Not OK check for each test point.

t the ProMat, faigle is showing its full portfolio of products for intralogistics, ranging from a variety of roller types, through to guide rails and topped by customer-specific developments. They satisfy the tough requirements of fast-moving conveyor and sorting systems while achieving an excellent price/performance ratio.
Support- and guiding rollers: Prime movers in intralogistics In conveyor and sorting systems, support- and guiding rollers do most of the work. faigle uses PASÂŽ-PU A-H thermoplastic polyurethane for its rollers. This high-performance material, which they developed themselves, is extremely abrasionresistant and has excellent damping characteristics. Noise and vibrations are reduced, the rollers run very smoothly. In addition the faigle plastic material has an extremely long lifespan. This prevents unnecessary machine stoppages and keeps operating costs low.

To prevent hydrolysis, the decomposition of the polymer materials by water molecules, faigle has developed a hydrolysis-resistant type of polyurethane. Since many years, PASÂŽ-PU A-H has been the standard material for all rollers that the company makes for conveyor systems. Tests have shown that faigle rollers made of PASÂŽ-PU A-H have superior moisture resistance compared to rollers made of cast polyurethane.

LASER SCANNING CONFOCAL MICROSCOPE: EPRI FOR THE GREATER GRID
Palo Alto-based Electric Power Research Institute improves throughput and accuracy of metallurgical studies using 3D Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy from Keyence.
W
hether it’s flipping on a light switch or opening the refrigerator door, the residents of industrialized nations have come to expect low-cost, clean, and reliable electric power. Delivery of that power is often easier said than done, however. The world’s electrical grid is fueled by a diverse array of technologies, including nuclear power, natural gas and coal-fired plants, hydroelectric dams, wind farms, geothermal sources, and even the solar cells on residential rooftops. Connecting these disparate sources of electricity is a monumental task, never mind the need to closely manage their output and keep all of us safe while doing so. To say it’s a complex endeavor is a gross understatement.
The Power of Collaboration Yet that’s exactly the mandate of Dr. John Shingledecker and his peers at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), a non-profit company that serves the public by performing research and development related to all aspects of electricity. Based in Palo Alto, CA with major offices in Knoxville, TN and Charlotte, NC, EPRI was established in 1972. It is a memberfunded organization, with more than 1,000 electric utilities, government agencies, public and private firms contributing financial aid, and representing approximately 90 percent of the electricity generated in the United States as well as 30 countries internationally. Members also participate in industry leadership, collaborating on EPRI’s ongoing research projects and future direction.

“We’re a unique organization,” says Shingledecker. “An independent and collaborative research and development company, one that shares its findings with the public, the electric supply chain, and our international participants. Because of this, we are an important source of information for everyone in the industry, and help promote efficient and safe generation of electricity from fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear power sources as well as its transmission and 15 | Industry USA | July 2017

distribution, with a focus on end-use efficiency and overall effect on the environment.” Studies in Charlotte No matter how it’s generated, electrical power sources require metal and machinery to operate. This is true for the turbines buried deep within the Hoover Dam or the massive gearboxes driving the windmills of the desert Southwest. One apparent exception to this is solar power, but even here, material research plays a key role in improving output from photovoltaic cells.
The primary tools used for such work have traditionally been optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact profilometers. Yet despite their long track record, these instruments are often less than ideal. Contact measuring techniques present the possibility of surface damage, particularly with soft metals or where scaling and
Beyond Legacy To identify the root causes of material failures, or predict those failures years in the future, the team in Charlotte needed a better tool. Shingledecker and his team of materials engineers surveyed a range of equipment and vendors in the area of microscopy and metrology. After reviewing the available options, they selected a Keyence VK-X160K 3D Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope. “Power plants are obviously quite large, and much of our research is done on commensurately large material samples—a welded structure, for example. Producing lots of images with the SEM and piecing them together can be difficult and time-consuming.”

Power generation is grueling work. Metals become fatigued over time by extreme pressures and temperatures, with high stakes indeed in the event of a failure. Shingledecker and EPRI work hard to manage and help prevent that fatigue. The organization’s material laboratory in Charlotte, NC studies new kinds of metallic alloys and other materials for use in future power applications. Legacy systems are monitored as well—samples of metal tubing from utility boilers, for example, or the coatings of valve stems used in steam turbines, are collected and analyzed.
oxidation exists, a common occurrence in steam-based power generation. Further, details smaller than the stylus tip are impossible to measure. Optical microscopes are generally limited to around 0.2 µm feature size and roughly 1500X magnification, and suffer lighting constraints. This is why SEM is often the tool of choice when very high magnification is needed, but this requires lengthy artifact preparation, is limited in the amount of three-dimensional (depth) information offered, and does not easily generate large area images.
The VK-X microscope sports a 408 nm wavelength semiconductor laser, motorized stage with 100 mm (3.93 in.) X-Y travels, and optics capable of 28,800X magnification. There’s no need to prepare specimens before measurement, 15 | Industry USA | July 2017

nor is a vacuum chamber required as with SEM—just set the sample on the stage and start measuring. Z-axis display resolution as high as 0.5 nm is possible, and 130 nm in the X and Y axes. Images are displayed via a high-resolution CCD camera, displaying subtle differences in surface relief and stunning large area metallurgical maps. Taking a Hard Look Some examples of this include 3D analyses of hard-facing alloys used for erosion resistance in high-temperature valves. Laser microscopy of samples exposed to erosion tests in the laboratory and evaluated with the VK-X clearly showed surface perturbations that were indistinguishable using traditional 2D methods, resulting in reliable—and quantifiable—measurement of material erosion rates. The VK-X offered similar results during analyses of the 30 μm thick, nanostructured TiSiCN coating EPRI and a collaborating utility were evaluating in-service on a valve stems, clearly displaying the amount and depth of material loss during service. MORE INFORMATION
EPRI found that images can be collected “in air” [SEM requires vacuum to operate] and there is no need for conductive surfaces as with SEM [which is challenged by coated or oxidized surfaces]. The end result? Technicians can take more samples, more quickly, making overall throughput of the lab that much greater.

“When the metallographers and engineers say that something makes their life easier, it means we can do more work,” Shingledecker says. “Our people spend more time focusing on the results, as opposed to time spent getting the results. That helps us toward our end goal: development of welds and materials that can endure harsher conditions. This in turn enables the industry to build more efficient, safer power generation technology for future generations.” www.keyence.com/epri

GRIMME AND HENGSTLER OFFER IMPRESSIVE ROBUSTNESS, EVEN FILLING, AND DON'T LET CUSTOMERS DOWN
In Germany alone, over 10 million tonnes of potatoes are harvested each year. Worldwide, the total even exceeds 341M tonnes*. More than 80 years ago, Grimme developed the first potato harvesting machine. A great deal has happened since that time, and now Grimme is the world market leader in potato harvesting technology.
B
esides the actual harvesting, efficient storage technology is equally important to ensure that potatoes remain available in top quality to meet demand. For this type of requirement, Grimme offers the SL80 store loader for example, which uses the Hengstler absolute encoder AC58.
MORE INFORMATION
But how does a store loader function exactly and what are the challenges? Using suitably adapted sensors, the store loader detects the current filling level. Using these values and the positioning data, the Hengstler encoder controls the travel and angle of the conveyor mechanism using an intelligent system. The goal is fill the storehouse in a careful, smooth and defined manner. The storage of fresh potatoes is the little-known link between automated harvesting and on-time processing or marketing. This customer-specific solution is paying off. So far there have been no reports of problems or breakdowns. This means that Grimme's customers can rely on their machines at all times and Grimme relies on Hengstler for determining the positioning data.
And the signs for the future are very positive, particularly in the area of potato harvesting. Demand for fresh potatoes is forecast to remain flat in industrial countries, whereas the market for processed potatoes is growing due to increasing demand for ready meals. However, consumption of fresh potatoes is growing in developing countries because people's nutrition is growing more varied. To provide greater ease of operation and flexibility to farmers, digital technology is continuing to make headway in harvesting technology. However Digital Farming is not just being determined in the Cloud, but in everyday tasks, mostly in demanding conditions. This means that quality like that offered by Grimme with harvesting machines, and Hengstler with robust and reliable components, will be needed more than ever in future. Esterline Connection Technologies – Souriau's offering of Trim-Trio® circular connector features a wide variety of insert arrangements for plastic, metal, and bi-metal connectors. They are fitted with 16 and 20 gauge contacts for signal, coaxial, and fiber-optic connections, and 12 and 8 gauge contacts for power connections. Trim-Trio® simplifies the management of contact and shell inventories and provides costeffective solutions for multiple industrial markets.
MORE INFORMATION
Simplify your inventory management The design of the Trim-Trio® connectors is based on a simple concept: enable manufacturers to use a single type of contact for different types of connector in order to simplify the management of their shell and contact inventories and tailor their connectors to specific applications. For example, a plastic, metal, or bi-metal connector may be used in different environments, but the form-factor of the insert arrangement is the same and the connectors are both interchangeable and intermateable.
A single design that can be tailored to your specific needs In order to optimize interconnection costs, the contacts on these connectors are available either stamped and formed or machined and are supplied on carrier strips or in bulk packaging. Several surface treatments are also available. Depending on the desired electrical characteristics and the mechanical loads that will be generated, the contacts may be gold- or tin-plated, or receive a combined surface treatment. The offering's coaxial contacts and fiber-optic contacts meet requirements for high-speed signals and optical signals. All the contacts in the offering are easy to crimp using Souriau's standard tools.

A wide selection of products Industrial products have increasingly shorter life cycles. For example, products manufactured for measurement, lighting, and water-management purposes only last between three and four years. Although the overall design of a product may be suitable, it is sometimes necessary to go upmarket or reduce costs. Connections must be able to follow pace and shift from plastic to metal, or vice versa. Because they are interchangeable and intermateable, TrimTrio® cylindrical connectors meet these challenges. Trim-Trio® cylindrical connectors with one-third-turn bayonet locking ring are available in three versions: UTS (all-plastic), UTG (metal and plastic), and UTO (metal). Their interchangeability and intermateability mean that you can switch connector families without having to redesign the connector. In addition, the connectors can be tailored to environmental, electrical, and mechanical constraints. Retrofitting has also been simplified.

hese ready-to-use, plug&play devices from Pepperl+Fuchs are optimized at the factory for a specific field of work. Unlike conventional “general purpose” devices, commissioning and parameterization is extremely simple to carry out using teach-in or via data matrix control codes, and does not require trained and qualified personnel.
The first representatives of the device family to be available are the SmartRunner “Matcher” and the SmartRunner “Detector”. The Matcher is optimized to recognize a previously taught-in reference contour. Typical tasks include checking the position and accuracy of objects with high precision, to verify whether the robot can grasp body components, for example.
Thanks to powerful LED lighting, SmartRunner devices are capable of capturing images for the visual documentation of errors, process conditions and quality attributes. The integrated data matrix decoder allows the user to parameterize the sensor simply via data matrix control codes - without using a PC. The light section sensors supply the detection result as a good or bad signal to the switching outputs, which can be processed using any control panel.
In contrast, the SmartRunner Detector monitors the taughtin scene for the entry of foreign bodies that pose a danger to sensitive machine parts, such as expensive lenses and precision tools. It detects objects with a size range of up to 1 mm with high accuracy, using a trapezoidal measuring range that is 350 mm wide and 700 mm deep. The SmartRunner has numerous areas of use, such as in the automotive industry and in many areas of plant and mechanical engineering. www.pepperl-fuchs.us/usa
