from transmission, making the uEye SE particularly interesting for multi-camera applications. The all-rounder is available with a screw-on Gigabit Ethernet connection or with a – also screw-on – USB 3.1 Type-C connector. The GigE models support single cable operation with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) up to a length of 100 m. Instead of via PoE, the camera can be supplied with power using a 12-24 V power supply. The GigE uEye SE is available with a choice of GigE Vision firmware or the IDS Software Suite. In conjunction with IDS's proprietary driver package, the USB 3.1 Gen 1 version of this camera family also allows USB Power Delivery (PD). This enables an LED light to be operated using the USB cable, with the camera requesting the necessary power for itself and the light from the host PC via the USB Type-C interface as a PD consumer. The IDS Software Suite is identical for all of the manufacturer's cameras, regardless of whether they have a USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, or GigE connection. This enables optimum use of the camera and sensor features. www.ids-imaging.us

FINE CONDUCTOR TRACES THWART HACKERS
3D-MIDs from Multiple Dimensions offer protection from attacks on payment terminals.
P
OS (point-of-sale) terminals are definitely not a paragon of data security. This information is no longer a secret to the retail sector – at the end of 2015 the Berlinbased company Security Research Labs showed just how easily the devices can be attacked. "Hackers can complete a physical attack without a great deal of effort," confirms Thomas Hess, Head of Sales and Project Management at Multiple Dimensions in Biel, Switzerland. Direct attacks on terminal hardware allow attackers to gain access to sensitive data, such as credit card numbers and PIN codes. "Private information is temporarily stored on the devices in order to prevent the loss of data if the Internet connection is dropped during the payment transaction," explains Hess.
MORE INFORMATION
3D-MID protective caps increase the security classification Swiss company Multiple Dimensions is a leading global expert in the field of 3D-MIDs (Three-Dimensional Molded Interconnect Devices). This technology is based on injectionmolded plastic components, to which conductive traces are applied using the laser direct structuring (LDS) process. It is increasingly being used by manufacturers of POS terminals to improve security standards and fend off hacker attacks.
16 | Industry USA | September 2017
8
So how do injection-molded plastic circuit substrates offer greater protection from physical attacks than conventional PCBs? "To gain access to hardware, most hackers either use probes or mini drills. Our traces, which are located directly on the inside of the terminal's protective cap, represent a closed-circuit and are positioned so closely to one another that it is more or less impossible for a hacker to gain access without damaging a trace," continues Thomas Hess. If a trace is cracked, the entire circuit then fails – prompting the POS terminal to shut down immediately, whereby the cached data is lost and the device can no longer be used. Thanks to the Multiple Dimensions' technological edge, customers benefit from compliance with the strictest PCI DSS requirements (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard). "The benefits of injection-molded circuit substrates are extremely appealing," comments Hess, describing the 3D-MID technology, adding that "they replace conventional solutions with a plastic carrier and PCBs by integrating the function of the two parts into one MID – thereby combining reduced weight, a smaller number of components and low production costs, while at the same time increasing security."
NEWS
The thermoplastic base material is first compounded with a (non-conductive) laser-activated metal-organic additive. The LDS laser beam structures the trace pattern onto the plastic by cleaving the metal-organic additives while roughening and ablating the plastic precisely where the beam strikes the surface. Copper seeds split out from the additive, attracting free copper in the subsequent metallization step.
With its technology, Multiple Dimensions also enjoys a competitive advantage in terms of versatility and precision. "Thanks to our special technology, we can form threedimensional parts and then process these using a laser. As
Miniaturization trend generating widespread interest However, manufacturers of POS terminals not only benefit from Multiple Dimensions' development edge in terms of data security. The Biel-based company's products are al-so more affordable than those from many other providers. "We are fully automated throughout the entire added value chain. Every single stage of production is performed under one roof at our own plant. This increases the production yield and saves both transportation costs and time – savings which we are keen to pass on directly to our customers," explains Thomas Hess. Experience has also shown that the company is more than capable of holding its own against strong competition from Asia - even with technologically less demanding products. The applications of the 3D Molded Interconnect Device Technology seem virtually inexhaustible. Therefore, Multiple Dimensions is not only collaborating with manufacturers of POS systems, but also companies from the automotive industry, white goods manufacturers, consumer electronics and many other industrial sectors. "The more we as a society embrace the trend of 'miniaturization', the greater the need for 3D-MID in our day-to-day applications," comments Hess, describing future developments, particularly with regard to the "Internet of Things" (IoT).
MORE INFORMATION
The smallest trace-space pitch in the market In today’s market, there are several providers of security housings like those produced at Multiple Dimensions. "What sets us apart from the competition is our technological know-how in combination with worldwide competitive production, as highlighted by our uniquely small trace width and narrow spacing. The tighter the spacing between the individual traces, the more difficult the circuit is to manipulate from the outside. Most providers today offer trace width and spacing of around 300 - 400µm. However, Multiple Dimensions in Switzerland today produces traces with spacing of just 150µm. "Our production environment is currently capable of creating traces with even tighter 80µm spacing," adds Hess. "We are therefore in an excellent position to handle stricter security requirements – which we are definitely expecting to see in the near future."
such, even rounded edges are no longer a problem. Even raised sections and transitions, which can be a real challenge for basic PCBs, can be processed without any issues," explains Hess, describing the benefits of 3D-MID.

increase of up to 25% during the measuring process—all of that at a very good price-performance ratio. All machines of the HAIMER Microset VIO series have a modular design to cover a wide spectrum of needs. Tools that weigh up to 160 kg and have a diameter and measuring length of up to 1000 mm can be measured. Depending on your needs the devices can be upgraded to fully automated CNC measuring machines with integrated HAIMER shrinking technology. The unique design ensures ergonomic functionality for ideal ease of use for the operator. This applies both to the spindle access as well as the central control panel. The innovative one-hand-operation makes it possible to manually or automatically measure the axes and guarantees a μm-precise fine positioning. Finally, maximum quality during the manufacturing process is achievable through fast and exact measuring with the image editing software Microvision VIO. The tool measurement is even easier with the help of the large high-resolution flat screen monitor.
The UNO series machines are available in two different sizes. The series starts with the UNO 20/40 with a maximum tool length of 400 mm on the z-axis; the UNO 20/70 has a maximum tool length of 700 mm. Both versions are available as table devices with a 19” flat screen. A 22” or 23” touch display and the comfort system cabinet is also available as an option. By using the snap gauge method, even the standard models offer the possibility to measure tools with a diameter of up to 100 mm. With use of spindle adaptors that configure to the base SK50 taper interface, it is possible to also use most popular interfaces such as HSK, Capto, VDI, KM or BMT.

Even simple devices deliver highest precision With the HAIMER Microset UNO series, the focus lies on the precise tool presetting as well as consistent performance. Due to the many different options the UNO series offers, price-performance ratio is very good. Next to a TouchDisplay, RFID-Chip-System and post processors for all conventional control systems, the equipment options also
include upgrades such as autofocus or automatic drive. The difference between the UNO autofocus and the manual version is the ability to automatically focus on the cutting edge with a CNC control system in the c-axis. For tools with many cutting edges, this option is a proven time saver. Furthermore, the automatic drive version independently positions the different planes in the z-axis and automatically approaches the x-axis. The user does not need any special skills, because with the push of a button the machine independently measures complex tools with multiple cutting edges and levels. If required both versions can also be operated manually like the standard model.

B
ureau Veritas and Schutter Group, global leaders in agri-commodities testing and inspection, have introduced a rapid aflatoxin pre-shipment inspection and quality control process designed to protect producers, shippers, global buyers and feed processors by mitigating the risk of toxin exposure through on-site quick detection tests Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by two types of mold: aspergillus flavus and aspergillus parasiticus. Aspergillus flavus is common and widespread in nature and is most often found when certain grains are grown under stressful conditions such as drought or excessive precipitation levels. Exposure to aflatoxins can cause liver damage and cancer if not immediately identified and addressed. Animals fed contaminated food can pass aflatoxin transformation products into eggs, milk products, and meat.

NEW FIVE-PIN UTL RANGE: ALL-TERRAIN CONNECTOR FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
Esterline Connection Technologies—SOURIAU five-pin UTL range is not only very simple to use, it is also perfectly suited to applications that require field wiring.
E
ngineered in compliance with IEC 60320, IEC 69184 and UL 1977, the five-pin is a must for new industrial facilities and field facilities.
Simplified field implementation The five-pin UTL connector significantly improves tasks for operators working on aerial work platforms or in tight spaces. The rear coupling snaps onto the body of the connector whilst accommodating cable clamps and cable glands. The resulting assembly forms a rigid structure that protects cables from strain and vibrations and guarantees both the quality and reliability of power and signal connections. “A screwdriver is all that fitters need to connect wires to the five contacts”, says product manager Ludovic Paris.
Complementary with other UTL connectors, this range is perfectly suited to industrial applications as well as mobile equipment. MORE INFORMATION
Metal tabs provided in the connector ensure an audible click that is both sensitive and instantaneous. The connector is unlocked simply by pulling on the plug and pressing the latch at the same time. The contacts are fitted with a captive screw to retain wires in the crimp barrel. A version of the five-pin UTL features crimp contacts for more conventional industrial applications, such as ESD cord preparation. The contacts withstand currents of up to 16 A and accommodate flexible wires with cross-sectional areas of 1.5 to 2.5 mm².
Robust and safe for users The push-pull lock and thermoplastic construction of the plugs and receptacles ensure safe use. The receptacle of the five-pin UTL connector is available for front mounting onto 3.2 mm panels (max. thickness) with a nut. The mating surface between the receptacle and panel is sealed by a silicone O ring that comes supplied with the connector. When connected, the plug and receptacle ensure IP68 and IP69K ingress protection and are resistant to high-pressure water jets. The five-pin UTL connector is designed to withstand over 1000 connections and disconnections and is usable over a temperature range of—40 °C to +105 °C.

magine sorting through individual grains of sand on a beach, or searching for the largest bits of powder in a bag of flour; without an easy way to do so, your days would be long indeed. But that tedious job is similar to what lab technician Ricky Sapp once faced each workday, manually inspecting metal welding powders and the sieves used to sort them. That was before his employer, Indiana-based Kennametal Stellite Co., invested in a VHX-5000 Digital Microscope from Keyence Corp.

Joining Forces Metals have been heated and hammered together for millennia, but it wasn’t until the widespread availability of electrical power that welding became an indispensable fabrication method, used to raise tall buildings, construct ships, and permanently join a wide variety of mechanical components. But welding is good for far more than bridge building and attaching hitches to snowmobile trailers. It’s also used to make metal surfaces tougher, harder, and in some cases both. Hardfacing is the application of specialty weld metals to wear and bearing surfaces, and is used across a broad array of industries. Tractor makers hardface drive 16 | Industry USA | September 2017

sprockets and shovel rollers. Turbine manufacturers use it to strengthen blades and valve seats. Steel mills rely on hardfaced components to crush rock and pulverize metals. Much of the material used for hardfacing operations is a cobalt-chromium metal known as Stellite, which as you may have guessed from the name, is manufactured by Kennametal Stellite. Together with other hardfacing alloys and nickel-based metals, Stellite is used in the oil and gas, food processing, dental, aerospace, and any industry requiring super tough, heat and corrosion resistant materials. Sorting Stellite Ricky Sapp has worked at the Goshen facility a little more than 24 years. He conducts a variety of physical measurements on the metal powders, weld rods, electrodes, and other materials used in hardfacing. He also inspects the welds made with these materials, most of which Sapp does himself. Compared to the rod used with most industrial welding processes, Kennametal Stellite’s hardfacing rod is “cored” with cobalt or nickel-based powder, which melts during welding and helps provide the strength and hardness expected of hardfaced metals.
Thanks to the Keyence VHX-5000, the mesh sieves used to sort metal powders at Kennametal Stellite now take 75% less time to calibrate.

weren’t really able to do before. The VHX-5000 has definitely paid for itself as far as I’m concerned.”
The ability to zoom in on welding rod extrusion nozzles has helped engineers at Kennametal Stellite make several design changes, improving product quality and extending tool life.
Prior to the purchase of the Keyence VHX-5000 Digital Microscope, Sapp relied on a traditional optical microscope to perform measurements. One recurring thorn in his side was the calibration of the sieves used to separate metal powders into different grain sizes, a task that once required “hours and hours the old way” but now can be done far more quickly. There are several reasons for this. For starters, the VHX-5000 eliminates the need for focus adjustments, greatly speeding up measurements. With the push of a button, an optimized view of the target is produced in as little as one second. It has a depth-of-field 20 times greater than traditional microscopes, with high-resolution optics and software that captures and optimizes images automatically. There are also numerous functions such as wide area stitching, 3D depthof-field display and measurement, edge detection, and more. This makes the VHX-5000 a simple-to-use, but also powerful measurement tool for a variety of applications.
Sapp also inspects the powder itself, and says the new system provides far greater capabilities than what was available to him previously. “If there’s anything questionable we can get a really good look at it now, and do measurements we
Sapp is the primary user of the VHX-5000, although he’s trained others on its use. He says it’s very easy to learn, but when he does have a question, help is a phone call or email away. His only complaint is that he wishes he had more time to spend with some of the device’s advanced features, such as metallurgical analyses, and would like to purchase a higher magnification lens at some point for an even closer view of the metal powders he works with (Sapp is currently using the 20-200X, although up to 5000X is possible). At some point he might add a borescope to the system, to provide an even closer view of the extrusion dies, just one of the many options that allows the VHX-5000 to grow with a customer’s changing needs. “The clarity of the photos is excellent,” he says. “You just push a button and the VHX-5000 takes multiple images using different colors and lighting levels. You don’t have to spend a bunch of time adjusting things to get the best picture. That makes it easy to share photos with our customers, and also helps us internally with making process adjustments. The auto focus is wonderful as well. You hit one button and it zooms in for you, so you can see what you’re wanting to see. It’s amazing. I honestly don’t know how I did my work without it. But I do know one thing: I’m not going back.”

“It used to take around 40 minutes to calibrate a sieve,” he says. “With 24 different sieves, that meant several days of work. But with the VHX-5000, I can finish a sieve in 10 minutes. It’s a huge timesaver.”
Process Improvement It’s also open doors to unexpected product improvements. “We have furnaces here for making weld rod, and they have these little ceramic extrusion dies inside,” Sapp explains. “With the Keyence microscope I was able to take a picture of one and make a 3D image. It helped us visualize what’s actually happening as the product is being made. That in turn gave us some ideas on how to modify the nozzle shape and improve its longevity, allowing us to make more—and better—product for each set of dies. It’s made a night and day difference. That’s another thing we couldn’t do before.”

COVAL has taken up this challenge with the FPC series suction cup. It is specifically designed ultra-flexible packaging and will “stick to the product” regardless of shape or material. As a result, it is able to handle very high production rates. To achieve this, COVAL has worked with packaging machine manufacturers, taking into consideration their constraints and submitting its designs to real-life tests. The FPC Series is based on three major innovations: 1. Thin and wavy flower-shaped lips that perfectly mold to the packaging, whatever the shape. 2. Internal cleats that allow for optimized vacuum while preventing any crushing and also strengthen the hold on the product being handled. 3. Fittings featuring a lateral vacuum distributor that prevent any loss in efficiency when the product is held. 4. Materials: Food-grade silicone and plastic insert meets FDA and CE standards.
