HIGH-ENERGY PHYSICS AT CERN GETS A BOOST FROM KEYENCE MEASURING INSTRUMENT

Physics – the study of matter, energy and the forces acting between them – has a fundamental role in the progress of humankind. Science and technological advances are key global economic drivers, and progress relies increasingly on scientific discoveries. With so much at stake, today’s leading research centres, laboratories and scientific organisations, irrespective of geography, look for the highest quality instruments.

T

he European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) was founded in 1954. It employs just over 2500 people and hosts about 12,000 visiting scientists with 105 different nationalities. They use the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter and to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. The instruments used at CERN are purpose-built particle accelerators and detectors.

Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies before beams are made to collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the results of these collisions. The Detector Technologies (EP-DT) group of the Experimental Physics department (EP) of CERN participates in the development, construction and operation of these particle detectors. The DT group’s activities comprise detector consolidation and upgrade projects as well as infrastructure for experiments.

MORE INFORMATION

A key asset of the EP-DT group is its vast range of expertise and facilities in many different domains that are crucial for advanced detector systems. Among these are detector R&D, fine mechanics, engineering, micro-fabrication, and thin film coatings. DT runs several mechanical workshops with conventional and CNC machines, along with specialized equipment for machining scintillators, glass and ceramics. It also operates and maintains a wire-bonding lab, two irradiation facilities as well as a quality assurance and reliability testing service. 17 | Industry EMEA | November 2018

“Three-dimensional high-resolution metrology is a necessity for us, both in the R&D phase when a good understanding of the prototypes is required, and during the construction of detectors — for Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/ QC)” explains Alessandro Mapelli, microsystems engineer. “This often requires cumbersome preparation of the samples. Furthermore, several adjustments need to be made by the user. This is compounded by the fact that most complicated structures cannot be analysed if not by destructive means.” Aware of these challenges, the technical and scientific staff of CERN’s DT group needed a more reliable measuring instrument. Enter the VR-3200, a 3D contactless high-resolution measurement system from KEYENCE that allows a precise metrology of different geometries not requiring any preparation, nor destruction, of the samples. Surface textures can be reconstructed within seconds and areas hard to reach with mechanical probes can be measured. With the VR-3200, QA/ QC of samples can be performed within seconds to minutes depending on the surfaces to scan. Reverse engineering of samples with the possibility to integrate the reconstructed surfaces in a CAD environment is also possible. The KEYENCE software for this measurement system is very user-friendly. “It contains automated methods for 2D and 3D measurements of rugosity, profiles, volumes and planarity”, said Mr. Mapelli. “It also provides a stitching option for larger pieces, a comparison module for QC of mechanical series as well as a 3D-to-CAD tool which allows to import the measured volumes in CAD environment such as CATIA.” The data is directly exportable to CVS and Excel. In addition, the automated 3D area calculation over various areas, profile measurements and final data analysis after data export are very useful. Many of these features are not available anywhere else on the market – or at least not in this form. For example, the system is equipped with a magnification range from 12x to 160x and includes a high-resolution digital camera for capturing images up to 9 megapixels.

MORE INFORMATION

For CERN physicists and engineers probing the fundamental structure of the universe, having access to the highest quality instruments is crucial. They use the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles, as they seek insights into the fundamental laws of nature. The KEYENCE VR-3200 instrument plays its part in humanity’s quest for knowledge. www.keyence.eu

OEMs or integrators seek to reduce drastically the power consumption of their machines. The other fundamental requirement in this industry is fault-free operation, as any breakdown of the cold production system would cause significant losses.

With the PLSES 4500, a new IP23 high-efficiency and highspeed induction motor controlled by a frequency inverter, Leroy-Somer provides an appropriate response to the needs of the refrigeration industry. Based on the IMfinityÂŽ platform, the PLSES 4500 motor combines tried-and-tested induction motor technology with Leroy-Somer's recognised drive systems expertise. These motors, cornerstones of the refrigeration system, whose robust design perfectly meets or even exceeds the industrial refrigeration requirements in terms of reliability, are compliant with the latest European standards.

MORE INFORMATION

Dedicated to high speed, the PLSES 4500 has been designed to operate at variable speed. It was tested and qualified with Leroy-Somer Powerdrive MD2 high-power variable speed drives, guaranteeing optimum electrical and mechanical performance, obtained by using components selected to work together.

This solution using a variable speed motor drive has a positive effect on the energy bill. Offering IE3 efficiency, PLSES 4500 motors deliver their rated torque over a range from 1000 to 4500 rpm, resulting in notable power gains at the refrigeration compressor output. For its part, the frequency inverter adjusts the speed to the load fluctuations - which are typical of industrial refrigeration - by limiting electricity consumption to what is strictly needed for the application. Through improving operating conditions, the motor-drive assembly contributes considerably to reducing the energy bill generated by the refrigeration unit, as well as increasing the coefficient of performance (COP). This maximised energy efficiency can reduce power consumption up to 30%. Furthermore, Leroy-Somer made design choices which ensure a surprise-free operation of the PLSES 4500 motor, given the constraints of industrial refrigeration:

braids that contribute to the good product immunity to high-frequency electromagnetic interference. - The cooling system has been optimised to reduce losses, minimise noise levels and prevent temperature rise. The PLSES 4500 also benefits from a thermal reserve of 25 K across the entire speed range, which increases the winding lifetime. An ideal solution for the industrial refrigeration from 100 to 480 kW, in frame sizes from 225 to 315, the PLSES 4500 motor combines performance and energy efficiency, whilst maintaining a maximum level of reliability. http://lrsm.co/plses4500

COMPETITIVE PRESSURE SENSOR PP20R WITH RAILWAY CERTIFICATION FOR INCREASED OPERATING SAFETY

With the new PP20R family of pressure sensors, Baumer is expanding its portfolio to offer an attractively priced solution for demanding applications within the rail industry. The pressure sensor sets itself apart with its high insulation strength and enhanced EMC immunity, while also being the only pressure sensor on the market right now to be labeled in accordance with the GS1 standard.

T

he PP20R measures relative pressure in pressure ranges from 0–0.25 bar and 0–160 bar. It is available in a variety of models with regard to accuracy, output signal (current 4–20 mA and voltage 0–10 V, 0–5 V and 0–2 V), and electronic and process connections. This makes it a highly flexible solution as well as being extremely robust in combination with its reinforced measuring cell. It is suitable for use in applications such as pressure measurement in braking systems, cooling systems for traction units, and controlling and regulating the pantograph contact pressure.

With its four-pressure equalization ports in place of the single equalizer found in other products on the market, the PP20R is less vulnerable to environmental dirt, deposits, condensation water, and other liquids. This also makes it ideal for outdoor applications in harsh weather conditions, including on vehicle roofs or even in underfloor areas. The pressure sensor meets the newly established GS1 standard for the rail industry, which makes it possible to exchange component life cycle data on production, maintenance, repair, and reconditioning processes, and thereby contributes to efficient logistics processes for everyone involved in the rail sector.

MORE INFORMATION

The exceptional insulation strength of the sensor up to 1.5 kV AC minimizes the risk of damage caused by voltage differences in the device, thereby increasing both its own operating safety and that of the entire system.

Its high electromagnetic immunity exceeds the requirements set out in the EN 50121-3-2 standard, meaning it can even be positioned close to electronic interference fields without a problem.

DECENTRALISED ETHERCAT MOTION SYSTEM OFFERS BUILD TIME BENEFITS: AB DYNAMICS’ HIGH-END VEHICLE K&C TEST SYSTEMS INCLUDE KOLLMORGEN AKD-N SERVO DRIVES FROM HEASON TECHNOLOGY

AB Dynamics’ Suspension Parameter Measurement Machine (SPMM) is used extensively by global vehicle manufacturers, vehicle standards test houses and tier-one component suppliers for the measurement of vehicle kinematics and compliance (K&C) data as part of progressive R&D and for production quality control.

T

MORE INFORMATION

he SPMM is a 19-axis motion controlled machine that makes precise measurements of vehicle body and component deflections whilst loading the vehicle. It delivers a complete and faithful simulation of on-road vehicle behaviour and includes a comprehensive range of upgrades and options including Vision Systems, Moment of Inertia (MIMS) and Centre of Gravity (C of G) measurement capability. Heason Technology - the designer, manufacturer and distributor of world-class motion solutions – is a long-term support and supply partner for motion control components specified by Bradford on Avon based AB Dynamics. The next-generation SPMM, which has unrivalled measurement accuracy and improved performance utilises the Heason supplied AKD-N series EtherCAT-enabled decentralised servo drives from its distribution partner Kollmorgen. This has significantly improved the SPMM’s control system design by allowing a more distributed and modular design approach to be adopted. This has greatly reduced the hardware used in the system and the number of cables running from the SPMM to the control cabinet. 17 | Industry EMEA | November 2018

22

AB Dynamics’ SPMM 5000 The moving body platform of AB Dynamics’ SPMM 5000 features a central table which is precisely motion controlled via electric servo actuators in six degrees of freedom. This enables a combination of roll, pitch, bounce and yaw motion to be applied to the vehicle body during K&C and MIMS testing. The design geometry of the machine ensures that the ground plane (which replicates the road) is fixed during cornering and braking simulations. Each wheel station includes additional motion axes that generate X, Y and Delta forces at each wheel contact patch. By utilising high accuracy multi-component piezoelectric load cell assemblies below each wheel and a high accuracy “dynamic arm” wheel position measurement system, the SPMM 5000 is able to precisely measure all of the wheel forces and moments and the X, Y, Z, steer, camber and spin motion of the wheel centre. All of the motion axes on the machine (up to 18 for a fourwheel station SPMM 5000) include Heason supplied AKD-N and AKD-P EtherCAT enabled decentralised servo drives. In

addition, the Delta axes include Heason developed servo actuators based around TwinSpin® precision gear reducers from Spinea – also a distribution partner for the WestSussex based motion specialist. This unique gear reduction solution integrates heavy-duty radial-axial bearings with a trochoidal gear reduction system into a single compact unit, that removes the need for separate load support bearings or mechanics. In addition, a single AKD-N servo drive with EtherCAT is directly coupled to and provides simulation of the vehicle’s steering system. The SPMM 5000’s measurement systems and algorithms provide suspension engineers with an essential aid to the thorough understanding of a vehicles performance in terms of ride, steering and handling.

If the benefit of reduced commissioning and build time sounds compelling, then it is even more interesting to note that Kollmorgen’s AKD-N boasts a single hybrid cable connection for motor power and its Hiperface DSL enabled absolute encoder feedback (from a wide range of feedback options). Furthermore, the single cable philosophy extends to the servo drive power and fieldbus where an 11 mm diameter hybrid cable is used for the DC-bus and EtherCAT connection. It is also possible to run Safe Torque Off (STO) safety through this single cable. These factors combine for even less machine wiring than other manufacturers’ decentralised drives that require separate drive power and fieldbus connections as well as separate motor power and encoder cabling.

MORE INFORMATION

Kollmorgen AKD-N decentralised motion systems Previous SPMM machine designs have also typically used up to 19 motion axes, however with centralised (cabinetinstalled) motion control, the need to house high-power servo drives and power supplies centrally necessitated large air-conditioned control cabinets with the requisite motor power + feedback cable management systems installed over long runs across the large area of the machine, which has nominal dimensions in the region of 7.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 metres. With continuous machine power requirements up to 15kVA, the associated commissioning, inventory and component burden for the centralised design concept combines for a significant simplification in system wiring.

With each AKD-N servo drive located and connected close to its motor, and with DC power daisy-chained around the machine to each drive, significant savings in installation time has led to faster assembly and site commissioning times. Simplified wiring and cable management means AB Dynamics’ modular machine design requires less hardware, spares inventory, and field upgrades, for example two to four wheel set-ups are more easily achieved. The new SPMM 5000, without the need for a large control cabinet, also requires a smaller footprint which is an important factor for production test area installation.

As a decentralised system, Kollmorgen’s AKD-N series servo drives perfectly suit AB Dynamics’ wide range of system 17 | Industry EMEA | November 2018

configuration and measurement options it offers the SPMM 5000. A single AKD-C power supply may be used for up to 16 AKD-N drives and may also be machine mounted for convenience. Individual AKD-N drives cover a power range up to 4 kW and may be combined with centralised AKD series EtherCAT drives where even higher powers are required.

EtherCAT fieldbus Kollmorgen’s AKD-N series decentralised drives have a proven record not just for lower machine complexity but also for the high-speed synchronisation offered by the EtherCAT industry standard fieldbus. The real-time deterministic fieldbus system with low communication jitter is particularly suited to automation applications requiring short data update times. The freely scalable Plug and Play solution allows additional motion axes, sensors or machine I/O to be readily added to ensure the highest degree of design freedom for machine building. Commissioning and servo tuning is fast and straightforward with the graphicalbased Kollmorgen Workbench®. Well proven for other vehicle simulation platforms and high-speed automation applications such as packaging, processing and assembly machinery, the AKD-N decentralised drives used for the SPMM seamlessly perform in concert with AB Dynamics’ own EtherCAT master-based hardware and software system. PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN BOEING PORTLAND AND HAIMER INTENSIFIES WITH COLLABORATIVE MEMBERSHIP AT OMIC R&D

Brings total OMIC R&D partners to 20 at its Scappoose, Oregon facility.

T

he Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center Research and Development (OMIC R&D) continues to grow a strong membership base with the addition this month of HAIMER, a world market leading German tooling company in the field of tool holding, shrinking, balancing and presetting. With a total now of seventeen manufacturing industry partners and three Oregon public universities, the Scappoose, Oregon (USA) based R&D facility continues to build a world-class operation to develop advanced metals manufacturing technologies through its collaborative research and development activities.

MORE INFORMATION

Through this partnership, Boeing—with its center of excellence and main production plant for heavy metal machining in Portland, Oregon—is intensifying its strategic partnership with HAIMER by sponsoring a joint membership at OMIC R&D. The partnership between Boeing and Haimer reaches back more than 10 years when HAIMER’s Safe-Lock™ pull out protection system became a true game changer at Boeing. With one of the largest titanium machining shops in the world, Boeing Portland has set the standard for cutting tools and tool holder applications for difficult to machine materials. The partnership will be strategically strengthened 17 | Industry EMEA | November 2018

by HAIMER’s investment and support as a new member at OMIC R&D. Due to its technology advantages, the Haimer Safe-Lock™ system has become the Boeing Portland standard for roughing in their milling operations. Haimer implemented an open licensing policy where additional American and other cutting tool makers offer this technology as a standard solution which are widely used in the Boeing machining operations. In fact, the Boeing Company has also received an IP, patent and trade mark license from Haimer to be able to quickly respond to their machining needs for this innovative technology. Prior to implementing Safe-Lock™ in their production, Boeing was constantly facing the challenge of preventing the cutting tool from the pull-out which potentially created very expensive scrap. Over the last 10 years, since implementing Safe-Lock™, they haven’t had a single tool pull-out incident for their high value components—thus avoiding any sort of expensive scrap and machining failure which was a common problem before implementing SafeLock™.

IN THE CONTEST FOR MAXIMUM METAL REMOVAL, KENNAMETAL’S NEWEST HELICAL MILLING CUTTER TAKES FIRST PLACE

Stiff, stiffer, HARVI Ultra 8X. The bolt taper flange cutter with a KM4X adaptor provides unmatched stability. Whether pocketing or profiling, the HARVI Ultra 8X consistently removes up to 20 cubic inches of titanium per minute, with tool life of one hour or more.

Imagine burying a roughing tool in a block of Ti-6Al-4V titanium and ripping away more than 1000 cm3 (61 cubic inches) of material in just one minute. If you’d been at a recent test of Kennametal’s new HARVI™ Ultra 8X helical milling cutter, you’d have seen exactly that. Using a 95 mm (3.74 in.) axial depth of cut, 20 mm (0.78 in.) radially, and a feedrate of 423 mm/min (16.65 ipm), the 80 mm (3.15 in.) diameter HARVI Ultra 8X plowed through this difficult aerospace superalloy for nearly three minutes straight without flinching.

MORE INFORMATION

Maximum Excitement Tim Marshall, senior global product manager for indexable milling, has tested the HARVI Ultra 8X with a variety of customers, pushing the limits of the new cutter on everything from 15-5 PH to cast iron to Aermet 100 (highstrength steel) and seeing outstanding results with each.

“Kennametal developed the HARVI Ultra 8X to meet two distinct needs,” Marshall says. “The first came from the aerospace industry, which thanks to the large numbers of aircraft being built today requires the highest metal removal rates possible but still achieving excellent tool life. At the same time, machine tool builders and users alike are asking for tools able to withstand higher cutting speeds but generate lower machining forces, so as to reduce wear and tear on machine components during extreme cutting conditions. The new HARVI Ultra 8X does all that, and a lot more besides.” Massive piles of chips notwithstanding, your shop almost certainly wants its tools to stay in the cut far longer than three minutes. Marshall agrees, saying the HARVI Ultra 8X was designed to predictably remove 20 cubic inches (328 cm3) of Ti-6Al-4V each minute while attaining 60 minutes of tool life per cutting edge. To do this, Kennametal combined a

number of innovative technologies in this highly engineered cutting tool solution: • A double-sided yet positive rake insert that delivers the lowest cost per edge possible and simultaneously reduces power consumption by up to 50 percent. • Thanks to a unique AlTiN+TiN PVD coating that provides robust resistance to thermal fatigue, Kennametal’s highperformance KCSM40 carbide grade enjoys much longer tool life than competing solutions. • The HARVI Ultra 8X cutter body is constructed of a higher quality steel than competing solutions for improved stiffness and rigidity under high-cutting forces. • In addition, a unique BTF46 (bolt taper flange) connection provides the ultimate in deflection resistance compared to traditional shell mill type holders. • The variable helix design of HARVI Ultra 8X breaks up the harmonics that lead to chatter, further improving tool life, part quality, and throughput.

Yet the HARVI Ultra 8X has even more tricks up its sleeve. Precision through-the-tool coolant nozzles direct cutting fluid where it’s needed most. An enhanced flute design assures maximum chip evacuation. Oversize M4 Torx Plus screws for greater insert stability. The option with a KM4X adaptor brings greater tools holding stability. Especially prepared insert edges optimized for the KCSM40 grade greatly extend tool life. Corner radii from 0.8mm to 6.4mm, in both inch and metric, means there’s little you can’t machine. Beyond Ti-6Al-4V “We’ve optimized everything about the HARVI Ultra 8X,” says Marshall. “The flutes and the coolant nozzles assure maximum chip flow, something that’s very important when you’re removing this much material—without it, the chips get jammed up and you’re facing catastrophic failure. Our KCSM40 grade has proven to be a top performer in hightemp alloys, but we also offer several equally excellent grades for other work piece materials. And eight cutting edges per insert? Nobody else has that in a helical cutter.” Double sided inserts not only means lower cost per edge but the ability to increase speeds and feeds beyond what was previously possible, Marshall notes. And because the HARVI Ultra 8X is available with an integral shank or the “crazy strong” BTF46 mount, users can adapt the cutter to virtually any machine tool spindle with no loss of rigidity. “We go up against our competitors’ and sometimes even our own helical cutters and are blown away by the performance improvement,” he says. “For anyone who’s looking for the highest productivity at the lowest possible cost per edge, this is the cutter for them.” www.kennametal.com

MORE INFORMATION

What’s in a Name? This last point is particularly important. A variable helix geometry greatly reduces carbide-killing vibration. Using 12 mm and 10 mm inserts also helps, as their smaller size means more inserts in the cutter body, more inserts engaged in the workpiece, and more inserts to absorb the pounding of a heavy machining operation.

VERLINDE FACILITATES BIG BAG MANIPULATION AT A CARDBOARD MILL

RDM, a cardboard mill located at Blandec near Saint-Omer in the Pas de Calais administrative department, consulted VERLINDE in March 2017 to install a motorized VFM jib crane to handle its Big Bags. RDM produces different types of cardboard for all sectors of industry.

T

he mill had already called upon VERLINDE to erect an aluminium gantry crane designed for corrective maintenance applications. Satisfied with the quality of the product and erection work, the cardboard mill, through the intermediary of their integrator partner HERIPRET, once more called upon VERLINDE in March 2017 to find a solution for a Big Bag handling problem.

MORE INFORMATION

The1100 kg recycling bags were formerly handled from their factory entry point to the carton recycling unit by a fork-lift truck. The process, inappropriate for the operation, was slow, lacking in precision and laborious. Verlinde recommended the installation of a 360° slewable motorized jib crane enabling the handling of loads of up to 1600 kg incorporating the weight of a spreader beam (100kg).

17 | Industry EMEA | November 2018

32

VERLINDE jib cranes (a column-mounted version seen in the photo) are rational and economical handling machines requiring no modification to the building during installation. However, these space-saving machines enable 3-axis handling of loads and can be used by any industry. The fork-lift truck is now used to carry bags as far as the jib crane where the spreader beam is then hooked to the 4 handles. The jib crane's motorized boom raises the Big Bag, rotates through 180° and sets the bag down in a hopper. This specific system of handling is thus more fluid and better adapted to the process. VERLINDE had to take into account the drawback of a lack of space, the jib crane having to pass under an existing 5 metrehigh suspended crane; the overall height of the installation had to be no more than 4730 mm. A à EUROLIFT BH electric belt hoist for loads from 500 to 5000 kg, generally used in the food processing industry, was selected due to its small space requirement and its minimum loss of headroom under the hook. Its lfting power is significant and it offers the toughness of a product designed for industry combined with total operating cleanliness. The hoist motor with two

mechanically variable speeds and two speed travel motor (complying with standard EC 34.1/IEC 34.2, IP 55 protection and insulation F) combined with fully sealed reduction gearing enable your loads to be shifted silently and with great precision. A high security belt guide, electric hoisting limit switch and electrico-mechanical load limiter as standard equipment, ensure users maximum safety in any situation. Optimal operation of the jib crane enables a Big Bag to be loaded up to 6 times every 24 hours. Time saving for the operator is significant, the process is simplified and production has increased. HERIPRET, VERLINDE's integrator partner performed the erection work and will take care of maintenance. RDM cardboard mill, once more satisfied with the optimisation of its production process, is planning new investments. MORE INFORMATION
