n plants with many drive units, the total cost of ownership can be reduced by up to 70% through intelligent management of variants. Therefore, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has established three preferred sizes for efficient variable-frequency drives in materials handling and conveyor applications. These cover the typical functional and performance requirements in postal hubs, intralogistics applications, and baggage handling systems. The standardized drive systems greatly simplify purchasing, engineering, commissioning, and spare parts stocking. Moreover, they are particularly easy to install, operate, and maintain.

Limiting the number of variants can yield greater total cost of ownership (TCO) savings than any other measure except for lowering energy consumption. Therefore, drive manufacturers should be able to provide viable drive system standardizations for specific industrial segments. Preferred variants will also benefit customers by simplifying the procurement process, from the first drive purchase to any orders that may follow. Fewer variants also make inventory management much easier. Furthermore, they make planning and engineering processes less complex for everyone – the drive supplier, the OEM, and the end user. The challenge is to select as few drive configurations as possible in such a way that they adequately fulfill the varied tasks without being oversized. Drive engineers therefore need to thoroughly analyze sector-specific patterns of drive operation and application-specific needs. NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has been designing efficient drive technology for intralogistics and airports for many years. Based on this wealth of experience, the German manufacturer has developed the LogiDrive line of three preferred drive variants optimized for these applications. LogiDrive systems ensure leaner purchasing, engineering, system maintenance, and staff training processes. Only very few spare parts must be kept in stock. As a result, the TCO

in postal hubs, warehouses, and baggage handling systems can be reduced by up to 70%. Three variants, much flexibility The LogiDrive line is the solution for conveyor systems spanning many hundred meters. The variable-frequency drives (VFDs) allow for simple daisy-chaining; short power lines can be connected from one drive to the next. NORD has tailored this line to intralogistics and airport technology. Three geared motor variants meet all typical performance requirements. IE4 permanent-magnet synchronous motors with power ratings of 1.1 kW, 1.5 kW, or 2.2 kW are combined with efficient two-stage helical-bevel gearboxes in two sizes for torques up to 260 Nm. Robust frequency inverters from the NORDAC LINK series enable a wide range of speeds. The systems feature a high overload capacity and offer a uniquely versatile range of functions. Interfaces for all commercially available communication protocols are available, including PROFINET, Ethernet POWERLINK, EtherCAT, and EtherNet/IP.

Integrated safety LogiDrive systems efficiently and safely power horizontal, inclined, and vertical conveyors. A load monitor protects the driven equipment by stopping the motor in case of blocked applications. NORD can even implement the STO and SS1 safety functions according to EN 61800-5-2 for every single drive axis by means of TĂœV-certified electronic modules. Employing field-oriented vector control, the inverters achieve high-precision control. In hoist applications, for example, they provide full torque from zero speed and reliably deliver set speeds even under load fluctuations. Standard inverter features furthermore include connection options for incremental and absolute encoders. The drives manage absolute and relative positioning as well as smart braking. Positions and distances can be programmed via the bus or directly on the device. Multiple drives in master/slave operation can synchronize speeds or positions. Featuring integrated PLC as well as PI controller functions and a wide

Extremely user-friendly and efficient LogiDrive systems are easy, quick, and safe to install thanks to coded plug-in connectors. Maintenance switches, key switches, and direction switches on the devices allow for flexible direct access to individual drive axes for setup or service. Sensors and actuators can be connected via M12 plugs. Sensor data collected by the inverters can be passed on to higher-level systems, which reduces otherwise necessary wiring. also simplify maintenance. Drive components can be easily replaced. Instead of swapping out entire drive units, for instance, only the geared motor can be exchanged. Thanks to their light-alloy housings, the compact drives are easy to handle as well: on average, they are about 25% lighter than steel-alloy drives. The LogiDrive systems' IE4 or Super Premium Efficiency synchronous motors take their energysaving potential to its full extent in conveying systems with frequent partial-load operation. By consuming significantly less energy, they pay for themselves in a very short time.

Conclusion NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has extensive practical experience in the field of conveyor technology. The drive manufacturer has designed efficient drive systems for hundreds of intralogistics plants and airports worldwide. The company draws on a large modular program of drive components that are manufactured in-house. The energy-saving motors are suitable for worldwide use and available in all common efficiency classes. The NORD gear portfolio comprises numerous gear types and covers an extremely wide range of torques and gear ratios. The VFDs provide enhanced intelligence in plant segments and ensure high efficiency especially in partial-load operation. Furthermore, electronic inverters enable highly flexible speed adjustment. This allows for limiting the drive variants in a larger installation to only a few sizes and gear ratios. The new LogiDrive systems for airport and other logistics applications demonstrate the benefits of greatly simplified variant management and the major cost savings associated with it. ENERGY EFFICIENCY: FOCUS ON HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES - APLUS CAPTURES POWER AND HARMONICS RELIABLY

Manufacturers of large household appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators and freezers have to constantly monitor the energy efficiency of their products during production. These days, the focus is on energy consumption as well as pollution of the main supply by current and voltage harmonics. Exact measurements avoid rejected goods and thus lower production costs.

MORE INFORMATION

Staying marketable To ensure that products stay marketable, measurements need to be carried out in a straightforward and cost-effective manner in the development phase, during production and in final test. The APLUS from Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG is a complete device that fulfils these requirements. The APLUS is designed to perform measurements on three phases even with different loads on the conductors. So this efficient device can be used to test three products simultaneously. This immediately reduces by two-thirds the space needed in the test stations and the cost of purchasing measurement devices.

Efficient accurate and durable The APLUS is suitable for measuring power consumption, ranging from more than 500 W when the household appliance is in operating mode, down to a target consumption of less than 1 W in standby mode. The measurement data provide a clear indication of whether the product is in compliance with the energy consumption requirements. Faulty devices can thus be detected while they are still in the production phase. The APLUS has a significant price advantage compared to DIN IEC 62301-compliant measurement instruments, while still delivering 0.1% accuracy in voltage and current measurements and 0.2% accuracy in power measurements. The efficiency of the measurement device (besides its threephase measurement capability) can be further enhanced by means of individual parameter settings. Measurement data can be captured in a straightforward manner during the various production phases.

THE RISK WITH VERTICAL AXES MONITORING AND CONTROLLING BRAKES ARE PART OF FUNCTIONAL SAFETY TECHNOLOGY AT KOLLMORGEN

Safety of people and machinery is a constant challenge, particularly with applications that involve loads transported and positioned vertically. There are challenging issues that arise from the design to the construction stages especially when the goal involves ensuring the safety of vertical axes with high loads using just the holding brake installed in the drive motor.

T

he traditional solution for safe brake control turns out to be problematic on account of new safety standards, as the motor brake needs to be tested periodically in order to ensure that it is functioning properly. This is accompanied by the fact that embedding the test function into the standard controls conflicts with the requirements under safety standard ISO 13849-1. What options are available? KOLLMORGEN’s solution is based on drive-based safety technology – specifically in the form of the “Safe Brake Control” safety function with integrated brake test.

MORE INFORMATION

The new AKD2G generation of servo drives from KOLLMORGEN is a good example of how to achieve additional benefits in machinery and system construction with increased safety. The product which is ready to launch in the market will provide important safety functions on the controller side with Safe Brake Control (SBC) and Safe Brake Test (SBT). The innovative feature of implementing safety functions with the holding brake integrated into the drive motor applies especially to areas where redundant dual22 | Industry Asia Pacific | November 2017

channel safety brakes are too complicated or too expensive. These areas of application will also become more and more frequent, not least as a result of collaborative production. Customers are increasingly moving towards plant automation, whether for setup operations, assembly or maintenance. These types of activities with a close relation between man and machine are only possible if the relevant cooperation is a safe one. Safe brake monitoring What inferences can be drawn from this for vertical loads? The general principle is that the holding brake installed in the drive motor must be designed in such a way that it is able to hold the load acting vertically on an axis. There are two effects that follow from this in terms of implementation: adequate sizing for the holding brake with a torque surplus of 30 percent to the maximum load and secure identification of faults or errors which result in the braking torque ascertained not being achieved. In the second case the individual could no longer be guaranteed protection, as the

risk increases that loads may slip through. With “Safe Brake Test”, KOLLMORGEN is launching an effective safety function for the drive controllers in the S700 series and the AKD2G series to be launched in market in 2017, so that any faults or errors can be safely identified. The “Safe Brake Test” (SBT) safety function is responsible for carrying out regular tests on the spring-applied brakes installed in the servomotors of KOLLMORGEN’s AKM and AKM2G ranges. The required braking torque derived from the application is reviewed automatically by the safety technology in the drive controller at regular intervals, thereby ensuring safe functionality.

Test routines from the drive Since torques need to be applied for the SBT, integrating this Safety Test function into the drive controller is the only option, as the controllers have to produce this torque.

Slim design for safety technology KOLLMORGEN is bringing a further safety function to the drive level during ongoing operation with Safe Brake Control. This can be conveniently configured via the KOLLMORGEN Workbench graphic user interface – without requiring any additional application software for the safety technology. Since safe motion guidance also logically requires secure communication, the new AKD2G range of devices uses the safety protocol for Ethercat FSoE. As a result the communication for the safety technology is incorporated into the machine’s existing real-time communication. This means that no additional wiring is required together with I/O modules in order to control the Safe Motion functions. The advantages: space savings of around 15 percent in the control cabinet with costs for the safety technology reduced by up to 20 percent at the same time. Availability also increases as some components and cables are known to improve overall system reliability.

MORE INFORMATION

There can be multiple root causes for losses of the nominal braking torque of a spring-applied brake. Typical ones involve glazed or worn friction pads, oil residues, as well as broken springs. The spring-applied brake can no longer achieve its full braking torque if springs break as a result of material fatigue. As it can be assumed that not all brakes will break at the same time, the decrease in the braking torque will occur gradually – a process that can be monitored using SBT. These tests will be carried out at least once per shift depending on the risk assessment for an application.

Similar test functions carried out previously by system PLCs are problematic under current standards. ISO 13849 is particularly relevant here. This stipulates that the parameters for the brake test must be configured safely. However, as an external Safety PLC is unable to apply torque, integration of the SBT into the KOLLMORGEN servo controllers is a suitable option with the aim of reaching performance levels in conjunction with the Safe Brake Control (SBC).

NEWS

Machine Operator and machine with vertical axis. Collaborative production: Operators have to load or set up the machine.

Challenge with single-channel structure - no redundancy and complex calculation of the safety level in accordance with ISO 13849.

KOLLMORGEN supplements this slim approach to implementing drive-based safety solutions for vertical loads with safe power reduction for the motor brake. The background to this: a magnetic coil is used to raise a springapplied brake. It is worth reducing the power accordingly since a higher level of power is required for raising than that required for maintaining a raised state. There are two benefits to this: energy consumption is reduced during machine operation and amount of heat dispersed inside the motor is less while motor output increases.

MORE INFORMATION

The bottom line The original task for spring-applied brakes in servomotors involves holding loads or taking hold directly during an emergency stop. These components are not safety components by design and do not therefore have their own PL or PFH values. Ensuring that the drive controllers are able to control the spring-applied brakes safely and monitor these safely means that safety level SIL2/ PLd can be achieved simply and cost-effectively; with a second redundant brake it will be feasible to achieve a safety level up to SIL3/ PLe. www.kollmorgen.com

LEROY-SOMER PARTNERS THE HIGHVOLT PROJECT AND IS PREPARING TOMORROW'S TECHNOLOGY

On the initiative of the IRT Saint Exupéry, one of the eight Technological Research Institutes in France certified under the Future Investment programme, on 29th June Leroy-Somer signed a multi-partner research project in the industry, aviation and transport sectors.

U

In this context, controlling their lifetime and reliability is vital.

The increase in power density for rotating electric machines and the arrival on the market of new generation electronic components which significantly improve power electronic converter performance will generate new constraints for the winding insulation systems of these motors and alternators.

In particular, this is the case for the “E-Power Drive” project to optimise the whole machine, electronic converter and cables and the “Highvolt” project which is specifically geared towards controlling the lifetime and reliability of insulation systems, especially windings, for example by developing demonstrators and test platforms for more electric or hybrid propulsion planes.

MORE INFORMATION

nder this programme, one of whose pillars is electrical machine insulation system lifetime and reliability control, Leroy-Somer will be providing its partners with its experience and know-how. In return, the company will benefit from the results of the work carried out in the aviation and automotive sectors to apply it to its own industrial products, making them even more robust and higher performing.

One of the objectives for the Saint Exupéry Technological Research Institute (IRT) in Toulouse is to assist technological breakthroughs by exploiting the major synergies which are appearing in the aviation, automotive, rail and industrial sectors, in order to prepare the robust, reliable and optimised technologies of tomorrow.

“The work, which is being carried out in conjunction with the research laboratories, will enable us to better understand the physical phenomena such as partial discharge which lead to premature component and insulator ageing and to assist the development of new, better performing and more robust components and systems. MVG MODULAR VACUUM GRIPPER SERIES: STANDARD MADE-TO-MEASURE

We know the famous Henri Ford quote: “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants, so long as it’s black”. The new MVG Modular Vacuum Gripper series by COVAL is quite the opposite. It can be configured to be perfectly adapted to every application, with the technical assistance of the COVAL team.

T

o obtain this result, some important developments have been made.

MORE INFORMATION

100% configurable The first choice offered to the user is its size. The MVG vacuum gripper series is tailored to the desired size. But customization doesn’t stop there. To benefit from a perfectly adapted gripper, the customer can also configure: • The vacuum generators • The gripping interfaces: foam, suction cups (shapes, diameters, diverse materials) • The vacuum level control: electronic vacuum switch or vacuum gauge

Precise vacuum management with “multi-zoning” The MVG Modular Vacuum Gripper series allows the creation of multiple independent gripping zones, which guarantees the optimization of vacuum management: - Increase in vacuum level - Reduction of leaks - Drop in energy consumption This “multi-zoning” is particularly useful for staggered gripping and releasing, handling objects of different formats, or optimization of palletizing layers. Economy at all levels The high degree of adaptability of this MVG vacuum gripper enables the customer to deal with the majority of situations without having to install several grippers together. For the company, the benefit is threefold: less investment, reduced weight which allows the use of smaller robots and, last but not least, energy savings.

NEWS

Interview with Fabrice Beynet, Sales Manager at COVAL, originator of the vacuum gripper project. “In order to design this new vacuum gripper we simply asked our clients what they wanted”

Fields of activity Packaging, plastics, metal, glass, wood, concrete/rocks… MVG – why choose this product The Modular Vacuum Gripper, composed of subsections, offers a customized solution of vacuum grippers for gripping objects of different sizes, shapes and • Customized dimensions • Selection of gripping zones • Compactness and lightness • Adaptation to products to be handled (choice of gripping interfaces) • Adaptation to installation (different types of vacuum generators) • Universal mounting bracket • Integrated functions. • Simple installation and use Video: https://youtu.be/GWNCnoawM5w www.coval-inc.com

Why create this new product when a vacuum gripper already exists in your range? Fabrice Beynet: We wanted to free our clients from the pressure of having an established format. The CVG has several lengths but only one width: 120 mm. With the MVG series, we can go from 100 x 100 mm to 1200 x 1200 mm. Between these two dimensions, anything is possible. Where we would sometimes have to use three CVGs, just one MVG would be enough. Does this mean important savings in terms of investment for the customer? Fabrice Beynet: Yes, and not only because he can reduce the number of vacuum grippers. He also gains approx. 30% in weight and size. Less weight means less power needed to operate, thus the possibility of using a smaller and less expensive robot. Savings which can help reduce the operating costs for the customer? Fabrice Beynet: The big innovation of this MVG series is the possibility of dividing the gripper into different zones. Vacuum can be generated only where it is needed, on a precise part of the gripping area. Why generate 100% vacuum when only 40% is necessary? As if in a house we had just one switch for all the rooms. It’s unthinkable! The “zoning” of the vacuum is very useful for staggered gripping and releasing or for the optimization of palletization layers. MORE INFORMATION

If you had to summarize the qualities of this MVG, what would you say? Fabrice Beynet: The “right innovation”, meaning the innovation which is 100% efficient. The MVG responds perfectly to any problem raised by customers.

The best for heavy I.D. clamping Thanks to the hexagonal pyramid clamp, maximum torque transmission can be achieved. Up to 155 percent more transmissible torque and up to 57 percent higher rigidity compared to the classic Mando T211 mandrel. This makes it possible to achieve higher process parameters and consequently improve the quality of finished parts. Greater process reliability is facilitated by the spacious layout between the clamping bushing and the clamping pyramid. Even during the clamping process, this design prevents virtually any dirt getting onto the surfaces. This significantly cuts down the frequency of maintenance times for cleaning and lubrication. The mandrel has a clamping diameter range of 18 to 100 mm. The clamping areas of each size are designed to overlap. This has the advantage that users can choose from up to three mandrel sizes depending on the clamping diameter. The larger the mandrel is, the greater its stability and rigidity. Smaller mandrels may be able to handle more of the customers smaller workpieces. Users
