ome discoveries and innovations are incorporated subtly over many years, while others lead to radical new breakthroughs that disrupt existing markets. But what of today? What new technologies are available right now that can help advance the manufacturing operations of 2018? This article examines some recent developments of the R&D teams at Mitsubishi Electric, such as a high-performance database that can reduce data storage space by 98.5%, a huge benefit in a manufacturing age increasingly driven by process data collection and analysis. Another exciting development is a concept able to miniaturise the artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to the point that individual devices can benefit from AI and local ‘deep learning’ processes. The future is bright indeed.

Data storage in the IoT Among the overlooked challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT) is the large amount of captured data that has to be stored somewhere. Over the years industry has seen megabytes run into gigabytes, and gigabytes turn into terabytes. And it will not be long before engineers are routinely talking about petabytes, exabytes and zettabytes. 22 | Industry USA | November 2018

One issue with this rapidly expanding data capacity is the cost for storage, back-up and keeping it available 24/7. To imagine the scale of the challenge, consider how many sensors, data points and memory stores there are in a typical factory. A single production line can have thousands of sensors, each one generating a data reading every 100ms or less. Over a couple of years, this could add up to hundreds of terabytes of data. Multiply this figure by the number of production lines – and sites – and it is not long before a hefty monthly bill starts arriving from the cloud provider simply for storing data. With the aim of addressing this issue, Mitsubishi Electric R&D has developed a high-performance database with the ability to reduce the required storage space by 98.5%. Significantly, because the volume is reduced, the load time for the database is also decreased by around 98%, which in turn means the search time reduces accordingly. All of these results can be achieved using a standard 2-CPU server with 4GB of main memory, an outcome that emphasises practical R&D at its best, where everyone can appreciate the benefit.

Artificial intelligence gets real From blockbuster movies to the doom-laden predictions of sci-fi writers, AI is both scary and hugely exciting. Much of what has materialised to date has been impressive, but of little practical benefit, primarily because of two key issues. The first is the tethering of a super computer: if industry really needs that much computing power, it is hard to see how AI will be usable. The second is the realisation that AI, just like a human baby, needs to be taught or shown how to learn some basic rules around the task at hand.
In the past, deep learning algorithms were expensive and IT-heavy. However, the new automated deep learning technology from Mitsubishi Electric is a world first and critical to future AI deployment without relying on expert knowledge. In fact, the training element of the AI is now
Proven track record Of course, Mitsubishi Electric has registered many notable technological breakthroughs over the years. Take interactive vision-guided robots in the postal industry, for example. The surge in global parcel traffic has been spurred in recent times by the success of online retail giants such as Amazon. Here, the desire for total automation has been a long-held goal. However, the main challenge has been devising a robot capable of picking a seemingly infinite number of different package sizes and shapes. With this issue in mind, the Amazon Picking Challenge was born, whereby robots are tasked with picking a wide variety of small, large, soft, hard, fragile, robust, light and heavy products – and placing them in a packing carton without mis-picking or damaging the goods. Mitsubishi Electric’s MELFA 3D vision for robots proved to be an essential enabler of this process, allowing the robot to ‘see’ what it wants to pick. The system can even enable robots to quickly and reliably pick products that are dispersed randomly in a pick bin. In 2014, this particular Mitsubishi technology won a coveted R&D100 award. This example, like many others of yesterday, today and tomorrow, means that Mitsubishi Electric R&D successes not only lead the world in terms of technology, but deliver real benefits and create new automation solutions for a brighter future. Moving forward, industry expects an enhanced human, machine and AI environment that will deliver many positive benefits for all concerned. Imagination, it would appear, is the only limitation.

To turn AI into a practical solution for today, Mitsubishi Electric R&D has been focused on both of these key issues. The result is Maisart (Mitsubishi Electric’s AI creates the Stateof-the-ART in technology). Maisart has miniaturised the AI algorithm to the point where it can be deployed on a single chip embedded in other products. This capability means that individual devices can benefit from AI and local ‘deep learning’ processes, while AI located in cloud environments can be used to co-ordinate between those devices. Think of it as applying AI on a scalable base: machine to line; line to factory; factory to enterprise.
In a manufacturing environment, for example, robots could be learning new tasks in minutes rather than being taught manually over many hours, simply because the number of trial operations and calculations can be reduced by 98% or more. Maisart-based FA solutions will soon become increasingly common, as will AI deployment in everyday products such as air conditioners and other increasingly intelligent appliances.

In selective laser melting (SLM) a stable inert gas atmosphere must be ensured within the built chamber of the machine. A specified temperature range is also essential. Only under these conditions can high quality components be produced. It is further necessary to remove metal splash and smoke developing during the melting process.

Alternative chargers that terminate the charge on reaching the battery’s threshold voltage can shorten charging time but always leave some capacity unfilled. Due to the liberalization of the rolling stock market, more and more companies use the existing rail infrastructure. Trains are therefore equipped with energy measurement systems to track the power consumption of different operators and enable transparent billing.

owever, without reliable, highly accurate transducers, energy consumption data can only be of limited use. Developed especially for precise measurements on rolling stock, the EN-50463-compliant current and voltage sensors from Knick's ProLine P 50000 series provide the basis for accurate power consumption accounting. The devices are used in protection and monitoring equipment, traction inverters, and auxiliary converters. In addition to current and voltage measurement, they are also used to detect short circuits.
The 3-port isolation that is characteristic for Knick transducers completely rules out measuring errors that might otherwise occur due to a galvanic connection of output signal and auxiliary power supply. Moreover, the devices continuously monitor themselves, indicating their status via a diagnostic output. All P 50000 units can be integrated into existing system environments without additional effort, since they transmit measured values as floating analog 0/4...20 mA or 0...10 V standard signals. Maximum flexibility and safety are ensured by the integrated power supply for all voltages typical for the rail sector and by a comprehensive touch protection, which includes the input terminals. This ProLine transducer range comprises specialfeature models such as the P 51000 current transducer that provides overload-proof detection of currents in the kA range via a shunt resistor. With this device, not even strong electromagnetic fields influence the measurement result. For precise detection of nominal voltages commonly used in rail applications (750, 1500, 3000 V DC), the ProLine P 50000 series also offers the very compact P 52000 transducer that is notable for safe encapsulation of high-voltage contacts and

connections. This ensures there will be no dangerous mutual interference around other components. This transducer can therefore be installed without observing specific safety distances. The ProLine P 50000 range devices meet all normative requirements for use on rolling stock and in traction power substations according to EN 50155, EN 50124, and EN 50123-1. They feature EMC according to EN 50121-1 and EN 501-3-2 and fire protection up to hazard level HL3 according to EN 45545-2 (2016). The devices resist vibration and shock according to EN 61373. They are temperature classified as TX (-40 °C...85 °C) according to EN 50155/EN 50121-1, and altitude classified as AX according to EN 50155. They provide protective separation through reinforced insulation up to pollution degree 3 and over-voltage category 3. They feature protective covers that comply with EN 50153. ESTERLINE CONNECTION TECHNOLOGIES - SOURIAU FOLLOWS THE DIRECTIVES OF THE EUROPEAN CHEMICALS AGENCY AND IMPROVES ITS ELECTROPLATING PROCESSES
The European REACH regulation, which aims to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment, imposes strict rules on the use of chemical substances. In order to protect employees in its production sites in Champagné and Marolles en Brie, SOURIAU is adapting its electroplating processes in response to these new regulatory constraints and at the request of its customers. MARIE LE SCAON, Technical Manager of Surface Treatment at the Champagné, factory, provides an update on the solutions envisioned by the company as substitutes for hexavalent chromium.

Why is REACH such an important topic for SOURIAU? MLS: Since September 2017, European regulations prohibit the use of hexavalent chromium in our electroplating processes for the treatment of connectors in aluminium alloy and in composite. We have obtained a delay from the European chemicals agency to allow us to continue to use this substance but our teams have been working on alternative solutions for a long time. It's a major factor for preserving the connector manufacturing activity at the Champagné plant.
How is this search for alternatives organized? MLS: First of all, our industrialization department works in the preparation phase with our suppliers of chemical products to benefit from their experience in other industrial domains, for example in the car manufacturing or plastics industries. Then we adjust their product ranges to our needs in terms of continuity, handling, appearance and resistance to salt spray. Then later, when the solution has reached a certain degree of maturity in terms of the process, we work with all the production services to validate and qualify the solution. Why is it so difficult to avoid using cadmium? MLS: Our connectors are intended to be used in harsh environments. Because of this, the outer protection is of capital importance. Cadmium and zinc nickel meet the required criteria in terms of finish and reliability for components which may be used for several decades in all

MLS: It's true that we are confronted with constraints that are imposed on us by international standards like MIL, EN, QPL, etc. which we have to comply with in the aeronautic and space sectors but also in rail, nuclear, wind turbines, and military hardware in general. Let's not forget that the major industrial markets which consume large volumes of chemical products and which are also impacted by REACH have the same deadlines as we have! Yes, the REACH regulation generates problems for us, but all the same it's a real accelerator for innovation which overcomes the obstacles.
types of operating conditions: heat, cold, salinity, corrosion, etc. The other advantage of cadmium is that it is cheap and readily available... so doing without it or replacing it is not quite so simple! Does the same apply to hexavalent chromium? MLS: The hexavalent chromium passivation process is the only feasible solution if one wants to have cadmium plating with an olive-green color. What's more, this treatment gives the connector housings self-healing properties which are very useful for long-term reliability. Another important aspect in terms of production is the treatment speed, which takes only 30 to 45 minutes whereas other plants take up to 1-1/2 hours and even more! Up until now, the universal applicability of hexavalent chromium and cadmium has made them an indispensable pairing.
What is the secret of your success? MLS: As soon as the REACH regulation was put in place, the management of SOURIAU decided to do everything possible to make compliance with this new regulation a success. Today, REACH only applies to Europe, but in the mid-term or long-term it affects all the major industrial countries. And the large European customers consider REACH compliance as a key factor in selecting their suppliers. As of today, what is the status of the replacement solutions? MLS: For composite connectors, we have developed a range of treatments for different plastic materials which are hexavalent chrome-free and yield a finished surface with identical performance. It's an important result, because it allowed us to reduce our consumption of hexavalent chromium by 50% this year. For aluminium connectors, we are actively working on a passivation solution using trivalent chromium which is authorized by REACH. However this perfectly workable solution does not currently replace
Could you describe the context in which you work? MLS: Certified ISOÂ 14001 since 2001, SOURIAU is a global supplier of connectors for harsh environments. We manufacture 13Â million connectors annually. The electroplating workshop, which I'm in charge of on the technical side, is equipped with a ventilation system which changes the air out every eight minutes. The air goes through cleaning towers which treat all the effluents and the residual wastes are treated by a specialized company. We use 8 tons of hexavalent chromium annually. With REACH, this consumption has already been reduced by 50% as a direct result of the changes to the industrial process.

As the latest addition to the P 50000 series, Knick will present the P 52000 VPD voltage detector for reliable detection of voltages up to 4200 V. The detector compares the input signal with a selected threshold value that can be set at the unit. If, irrespective of positive or negative polarity, the threshold is breached, the detector displays an optical alert and generates an output signal that can activate or control hardware relays, protective devices, or controllers. The signal level is matched to type 1 PLC signal inputs according to DIN EN 6131-2. We move the world” is the company motto of iwis, the Munich-based, globally active manufacturer of precision chains and mechanical drive systems for the automotive sector and the mechanical and plant engineering industry. iwis has now made a smart move in the company’s presentation on the world wide web: the new website, which went online on 15. June, shows the world of iwis in a new, lavish. Particular care was taken to incorporate expressive stills and videos, while the new, modern, “airy” design allows the clear, at a glance presentation of detailed information about the company and the entire product portfolio.

New web shop for fast, easy ordering The new website also features a shop system—iwis is still the number one supplier of high-quality roller chains from stock. Now ISO 606 standard roller chains in multiples of 5 meters lengths, JWIS and ELITE brand chains, sprockets, idler wheels and flat top chains are available for ordering online. The range of products available from stock also includes numerous coated and corrosion proof chains, as well as nickel-plated maintenance-free chains, galvanised and stainless steel chains. Additional products will be incorporated in the shop system in the future. Individual sprockets can be requested via the Chain Configurator. Customers can also upload drawings for this purpose, or request special chains using the corresponding forms in the Customer Service section. Another new feature is the link to a product information management system, which displays products attractively and ensures they can be selected, added to the shopping cart and ordered quickly and easily. Web shop and website have been brought closer together, so it is easy to purchase products and access information.

See everything at a glance—even on mobile devices An important innovation in terms of content is that all four divisions—Engine systems, Drive systems, Agrisystems and Systemtechnik—are grouped together on the Home page, so users can see and browse all divisions at the same time and are not limited to one division at a time. In addition, the site has become “responsive” following the relaunch: the new web design enables the clear, user-friendly display of information on smartphones and tablet PCs.
