Guided Operator Solutions help eliminate typical assembly problems.
B
y eliminating typical problems such as picking the wrong parts with a similar shape or name, picking and assembling parts out of sequence or just missing a part from a sequence, Mitsubishi Electric’s integrated guided operator solutions make workers’ hands faster and more reliable, resulting in appreciable improvements in efficiency for manufacturers.
Based on the Japanese principles of the “Poka Yoke” method of eliminating mistakes before they can occur, guided operator solutions are a simple, versatile system which do away with the need for parts lists or operator instructions, delivering faster assembly times, increased assembly quality and reduced requirements for operator training. Beautifully simple Traditionally, workers are required to pick a number of different parts or products from bins in sequence. The chances of them doing this with 100% reliability, 100% of the time, is small.
MORE INFORMATION
At the very least, a significant proportion of time will be taken up searching for the right part and validating the part number. In a worst case and all too common scenario, a mistake goes unnoticed until it is further up the production line, if indeed it is noticed at all. Mitsubishi Electric guided operator solutions ensures that none of this can happen by guiding the worker to the correct bin, possibly by lighting an indicator or by opening a shutter and requiring acknowledgement of a successful pick. Thus, 24 | Industry USA | April 2019

their picking becomes more reliable and mistake-free and also much faster, improving quality and productivity in the process. Terminals are easily installed on pipes racking and connected via a dedicated cable that avoids the need for multiple cables to the main controller. Intuitive connectors enable fast installation of networks, while terminals can be quickly set up with an address writer using dedicated software. These can be successfully mapped to a controller. Highly versatile The variety of terminals ensure that the solution is suitable for just about any application. The photoelectric sensors provide options for applications where high speed picking is essential, or for more cost-sensitive applications, an array of push button and lever feedback actuators are available.
Fully expandable Central to the guided operator solutions are Mitsubishi Electric’s controllers with dedicated masters communicating with a network of terminals. By connecting other devices to the controller, such as bar-code scanners, electric screwdriver or vision systems, guided operator solutions can be tuned to the exact needs of the operator. FAIGLE AT PROMAT 2019 IN CHICAGO - PIONEERING ROLLERS FOR MODERN SORTING SYSTEMS
The SE rollers from faigle have a new type of damping system.
Faigle, plastic specialists from Austria, is presenting the latest generation of its SE sorter rollers for parcel and baggage sorting systems at ProMat. These rollers meet the most demanding requirements for energy savings, noise reduction and low-vibration operation and their integrated damping system is unprecedented in the area of intra-logistic rollers.
R
ollers for sorting systems should have a low starting and rolling resistance, be highly resilient and run quietly. faigle has increased the strength of the rollers by optimizing them with structure simulation (FEM) and by using a new combination of materials. faigle uses a support body made of high-strength polyamide and a tire made of polyurethane PAS-PU TCS, which is characterised by high abrasion resistance and a low compression set.
The new logistics rollers can be recognised by their attractive colour concept and smooth contours without corrugations. This keeps them clean for longer and makes them easier to clean. www.faigle.com

This combination makes it possible to produce narrower rollers, which have a lower rolling resistance. The low compression set prevents the rollers from flattening after a longer standstill, such as at the weekend. Otherwise, this leads to increased energy expenditure when restarting the system.
rotating rolling axis. Since the tire no longer has to perform a damping function, it is narrower and has a lower rolling resistance. They can also be ground for low-noise and lowvibration operation.
The new rollers run significantly quieter than previous generations of sorting rollers. The plastic specialists from Austria achieved this by decoupling the “rolling” and “damping” functions. Damping is now carried out by the ingenious “faigle damping system”, directly on the non24 | Industry USA | April 2019

Leuze electronic presents an innovative predictive maintenance solution through an intelligent cable equipped with Smart Core technology.
L
euze electronic presents a concrete innovation towards powering Industry 4.0 applications with its new Smart Core cable. With the smart factory revolution on the horizon, the Smart Core cable enables an innovative predictive maintenance measure specifically for applications with moving cables (i.e handling robots, welding robots, moving cables). The cable contains an additional, special sacrificial wire that fails at approximately 80% of the cable’s lifecycle. The sacrificial wire is bridged with the supply voltage, and when the core breaks it gives an early warning of the impending end of the cable’s service life.
Not only does this help to prevent unplanned downtime, but it increases system availability by predicting downtime and allowing for scheduled maintenance. ANTHONY MACHINE AND KENNAMETAL TEAM-UP TO REDUCE SETUP TIMES
Anthony Machine has been using KM throughout the shop for years, so when the time came to equip their new Y-axis lathes from DMG Mori with quick-change tooling, the choice was clear.
Texas job shop reaps the benefits of quick-change toolholders.

F
or more than three decades, Kennametal’s KM™ brand of quick-change tooling has been making machine shops more efficient. As thousands of customers will attest, KM provides shorter setup times, greater flexibility, higher levels of machine utilization, and the ability to meet the industry’s increasingly stringent requirements head on.
Kennametal senior sales engineer Mark Davis was there to help, just as he’s been for the past decade. He explained to Anthony that the best way to reduce setup times and maximize the new machines’ potential would be to equip them with Turret Adapted Clamping Units (TACU) and KM quick-change toolholders.
One of these is Anthony Machine Inc. Since 1946, the San Antonio job shop has served a variety of industries, including oil and gas, mining, transportation and power generation. With all that precision machining experience, there’s little this San Antonio job shop can’t handle. However, after the company purchased a pair of NLX 3000 1250 universal turning centers from CNC machine builder DMG Mori—the shop’s first Y-axis, live-tool lathes—Anthony’s manufacturing team was challenged with making the most of that new investment.
“The TACU system supports everything from KM32 up to KM63,” Davis says. “We offer blocks for both static and driven tools, and can tool up lathes from Okuma, Haas, Mazak, Doosan, and of course DMG Mori—pretty much all of the major machine tool builders, with more coming online all the time. This makes it both easy and cost-effective for our customers to equip more than 80 models of CNC turning centers with a fast, flexible and accurate quick-change tool holding system.”According to Anthony Machine manufacturing technologist Daniel Goller, the decision to adopt TACU and KM for the new machines was an easy one. “Over the years, we’ve built a number of KM-equipped custom toolholders for deep boring and other machining operations on our CNC lathes and machining centers, and we use Kennametal? on several of the shop’s manual turret lathes to overcome limitations with available tool positions,” he says. “On more than one occasion, we’ve earned new

After seeing the benefits of using KM on their new NLX machines, Anthony Machine is planning to expand its use of quick-change tooling to other parts of the shop.

The speed and repeatability of KM quick-change tooling has made a “striking difference” on many of the jobs at Anthony Machine.

business because KM was able to achieve tolerances and surface finishes that others couldn’t do with conventional tooling.” Anthony’s operations manager Mohsen Saleh agrees. “The differences are striking,” he says. “Compared to the traditional wedge and screw-style blocks that come standard on most machines, the KM-equipped TACU units are both faster and more accurate. We routinely hold tolerances of 0.0005” (0.013 mm) and I’m told that part size doesn’t change from one clamping to the next. The turret’s less crowded, everything’s easier to get at, and you don’t have the chatter and deflection that you often find with your typical straight shank tools and set-screw type boring bar holders.”
supplier. We’re always competing against smaller, lowercost shops, and in order to continue winning new business in this environment, we have to adopt the latest in advanced tooling and machine tool technology. This is what’s given us the edge, and Kennametal is a big part of it.” www.kennametal.com
“Anthony’s experience with TACU is what we’ve come to expect from KM,” notes Kennametal’s Davis. “Considering the breadth of the platform, its accuracy, and especially its flexibility, it’s quickly become the de facto industry standard in quick-change tooling.” MORE INFORMATION
Saleh summarizes Anthony’s recent success with a bit of company perspective. “We bought our first CNC machine in 1986,” he says. “At that time, we were using a well-known competitive brand, and then Kennametal came knocking. What first struck us was their service-oriented attitude. They’ve always been willing to come in and work with us on applications, which together with the quality of their products is why they’ve since become our preferred tooling 24 | Industry USA | April 2019

THE MACHINE TOOLS MANUFACTURER, CINCINNATI VR, HAS CHOSEN COMMANDER ID 300 FOR ITS NEW RANGE OF DRILLS
Pursuing its constant innovation approach aimed at making its machines increasingly ergonomic and automated, Cincinnati VR has chosen to equip its new pillar drill-thread cutter with a new integrated variable speed motor, the Commander ID300 from Leroy-Somer. This drive solution enables adaptation of the spindle rotation speed according to the material being worked, for a better-quality machining result.
A MORE INFORMATION
historic client of Leroy-Somer, Cincinnati VR, the renowned drills specialist, is also an established player in machining centre maintenance. Installed on its historic site of Chambost-Allières in the Beaujolais hills, the company has strong development potential for a widely used product: the drill. Thanks to its innovation potential and its dynamism, the company enjoys undeniable success in this extremely competitive sector.
Conscious of the problems of duress linked to the use of conventional machine tools, the company focuses its efforts into research and development to design products that address this issue. In line with this approach, some 10 years previously Cincinnati VR launched its N320 VDA pillar drill with the objective of eliminating repetitive strain injury by relieving the operator of repetitive and stressful gestures. Hence, the downward movement of the spindle is totally controlled by a digital shaft composed of a Leroy-Somer solution (Mb series servo-gearbox controlled by a DIGITAX servo drive) and a GUI for adjusting the movement settings and featuring various user-friendly aids for the operator. Available in several versions, this machine won a number of international awards at major industrial trade fairs. With its brand-new generation P23V CTCE, Cincinnati VR proposes a smart drill that adapts its spindle speed according to the worked material, for both drilling and thread-cutting.

PLUG AND PLAY Kennametal makes deep boring easy.
W
alk into most any machine shop and there’s a good chance you’ll hear it: the high pitch whine of a deep boring operation, the chatter loud enough to have even the most hard of hearing among us scrambling for a pair of ear plugs. It’s a problem that has plagued machinists since the day lathe inventor Henry Maudslay first chucked up a piece of steel and tried to bore a hole through it, and has only gotten worse as metals have grown tougher and more challenging to machine.
Enter the Vibration-Free Zone Someone who knows all about it is Sam Eichelberger, product engineer for lathe systems engineering and part of the team that developed the internal dampening mechanism. “Perhaps the most important thing to know about the new bar is that it’s plug and play,” he says. “There's no need whatsoever for tuning or adjustments—you simply pull it out of the package, mount it in the turret, and get boring.”
Not anymore. Kennametal’s latest weapon in the war on chatter is one that will have machinists everywhere saying, “I need that.”The new boring system boasts the most effective anti-chatter mechanism ever developed by Kennametal, and also offers an extensive range of indexable heads and shank sizes.
There’s more to the story than making the shop a quieter place to work, however. Eliminating vibration and therefore chatter greatly extends tool life, never mind its positive effect on part surface finish. And when tools last longer, they can be pushed harder, with feed rates, cutting speeds, and depths of cut many industry experts once thought unachievable.

Eichelberger is one of them. He lists a number of features that not only make the vibration-free boring system the most easy-to-apply bar you’ll ever bore with, but also the most productive. These include a serrated, bolt-on connection at the bar’s business end that securely clamps a variety of styles and sizes of indexable heads. Better yet, the heads themselves have been put on a diet, with a shorter length and lighter weight that provides greater stability, contributing to the bar’s improved performance. They’re also coolant-fed, 24 | Industry USA | April 2019

NEWS Kennametal’s new vibration-free boring system boasts a number of technological improvements that allows a plug and play operation. An array of interchangeable heads that includes screw-on and lever-style clamping mechanisms in positive and negative rake configurations. Setting the head exactly on centerline is as easy as bringing the angle finder display to zero and locking the bar in place.
to precisely direct a stream of high-pressure coolant where it’s needed most. The result is hassle-free chip control together with maximum cooling in the cutting zone. Most important of all is the internal dampener. Said Eichelberger, “The bars are both vibration and maintenance free. Within the bar there sits a mass that's supported by a pair of elastic supports, inside of which sits a dampening fluid. This mass vibrates at a predetermined frequency during machining, attenuating the natural frequency of the bar around it to suppress vibration. There are no wear components to worry about, nor tuning—as Sam mentioned, you just set it and forget it.” The vibration-free system offers superior performance in boring applications up to 10X diameter deep, Eichelberger explained, much deeper than solid carbide or heavy metal boring bars are capable of. Internal and customer test results show surface finishes as good or in most cases better than competitive “quiet bars”, with significantly more aggressive cutting parameters possible across the board.
Anyone who’s ever struggled to get a boring bar exactly on center will appreciate the fact that setup is extremely easy. “There’s a reference flat on the top of the head that accommodates a visual angle finder,” Eichelberger pointed out. “You just rotate the bar until the indicator reads zero, then clamp it in place.” Considering the higher cost of a such a boring system, they’ll also appreciate the fact that the heads are replaceable in the event of a crash, avoiding damage to the bar itself. And users of Kennametal’s older boring system will find that their new heads fit perfectly with the use of an adaptor. “The portfolio for our Imperial bars ranges from one-inch in diameter up to four inches, while the metric version starts at 25 mm and goes to 100 mm,” Gable said. “There are a variety of interchangeable head styles available as well, everything from screw-on positive rake inserts for fine-finishing needs to negative rake, clamp-style geometries for heavy roughing. The bar’s designed to excel in demanding applications, and that’s exactly what it does.”

Of course, boring bars are only as good as the method by which they’re clamped in the machine. Kennametal has addressed this critical consideration by supplying machinespecific turret adapters, along with a special split sleeve bushing for maximum rigidity. “That’s the goal of this product,” says Kennametal global product manager John
Gable. “The greatest stability possible and the most effective dampening solution available, period.”
