AUTOMATED SMALL PARTS WAREHOUSE FOR UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL ZURICH

The Swiss system integrator Ansorix has produced an automated small parts warehouse for the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. The warehouse's zero-pressure accumulation roller conveyors are based on Interroll's Modular Conveyor Platform (MCP).

T

To ensure the hospital is ready to face future demands, it needed a new storage system — a streamlined solution that is tailored to the hospital's requirements and reduces operating costs. It was also important that the new logistics infrastructure should have the flexibility to expand with minimum disruption and expense.

The USZ offers medically comprehensive, individual care across all disciplines. The ultramodern health care facility houses 44 different clinics and institutes. Every year, around 41,000 inpatient treatments are administered there. Furthermore, the clinic association registers in excess of 500,000 outpatient visitors each year.

Ansorix opted for a storage technology solution from Kaufmann Systems AG, a company based in Hitzkirch, near Lucerne, Switzerland. The skills profiles of the two companies, both of which are partners of the Interroll Group's global Rolling On Interroll program, are perfectly matched.

he small parts warehouse, which was planned, designed and implemented by Ansorix, is the beating heart of the new logistics and service center commissioned by the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) in Schlieren, near Zurich. It supplies the USZ with goods and logistics services.

“As with previous projects, the collaboration with Kaufmann Systems ran completely smoothly. In projects such as this, it is essential to have experienced partners on whom you can fully depend. And with Kaufmann Systems, that is guaranteed,” explains Vera de Vries, Sales and Marketing Manager at Ansorix Systems AG. 25 | Industry Asia Pacific | July 2018

NEWS

The new warehouse has a capacity of 3,024 trays per storage/ retrieval machine. Its MCP with integrated 24V RollerDrive means that trays of varying sizes can be conveyed without any pressure accumulating. The trays are taken from the freestanding storage racks and delivered to the four picking stations. In addition to delivery of product trays from storage, each of these stations diverts empty and filled trays. Two additional conveyors carry empty trays to the picking stations for filling. The MCP by Interroll — the vital link between the small parts warehouse and the picking stations in the USZ project — is essentially a plug-and-play system of modules that makes it easy to create highly sophisticated and flexible material flow solutions that can expand with ease. The integrated 24V RollerDrive guarantees a controlled and exceptionally energy-efficient flow of goods that can be adapted to suit current requirements. www.interroll.com MORE INFORMATION 25 | Industry Asia Pacific | July 2018

INTERFACE FOR PROCESS-RELIABLE MACHINING

Schweiger Tool and Mold Making specializes in the machining of large workpieces and deep cavities. The milling specialists use HAIMER shrink fit chucks for their machining, in some cases coming from the supplier’s large standard product range and in others special custommade solutions. Large-scale mold maker relies on HAIMER technology.

S

chweiger Formenbau (Schweiger Mold Making) relies on automation to produce high-precision injection molds at competitive costs in Germany. In order to achieve the required, high process reliability, the largescale mold manufacturer does not make any compromises. For tooling they rely on tool holders, shrinking, balancing and tool presetting technology from the system supplier HAIMER.

MORE INFORMATION

The owner-managed Schweiger GmbH & Co. KG from Uffing at Staffelsee in Bavaria specializes in one of the most demanding industries: the automotive industry. For Managing Director Anton Schweiger and his approximately 75 employees, this means having to meet the highest standards of precision and quality with every injection mold produced. Additionally, they are competing in a global market, which, among other things, is subject to enormous cost pressure.

However, facing the strain of global competition, the qualified toolmaker and his team have adjusted and positioned themselves accordingly. They rely on an automated process chain which ensures absolute security and ends with injection molds that meet all requirements. In 2016, for example, the company built a new production hall and invested in two DMC 210U and 270U 5-axis DMG Mori machining centers, which are capable of processing even XXL components in one clamping operation. Equipped with an appropriate pallet automation, the machines run around the clock seven days a week - and all with just one-person shifts. On the weekends they run completely unmanned. This requires highest process reliability across all relevant components and functions. In this respect, Anton Schweiger has also focused on tool clamping technology, the often overlooked interface between spindle and tool. It bears great responsibility for the quality of the machining, the service life of the spindle and the tool life. The milling specialists at Schweiger swear in this respect by the support and counsel of HAIMER GmbH, Igenhausen. In 40 years, the family-owned company has become the

Slim, smooth running and in a wide range of special designs: a four-digit number of HAIMER shrink-fit tool holders ensures stable processes and high precision at Schweiger.

market leader for tool clamping technology in Europe and is considered to be the world leader in tool shrinking and balancing technology. Quality makes the difference For Andreas Orterer, production manager at Schweiger, the main argument for this strong partnership is the quality delivered by HAIMER, “With Haimer products, we can be sure we will always receive the quality that meets our high standards.” Schweiger currently uses in the thousands of HAIMER tool holders with shrink fit technology. In addition, there are two Power Clamp shrinking devices and a Tool Dynamic balancing device in the production. Andreas Orterer adds, “From Haimer, we get all tooling from a single source, which suits us very well. In addition, you notice the shrinking and balancing devices have been developed by machinists. They are easy to use and lead to fast results.”

This machine has become a “HAIMER” product since the Bavarian company took over Microset Tool Presetting Technology in Bielefeld at the beginning of 2017. Compared

Andreas Haimer, Managing Director of Haimer GmbH, explains, “With the acquisition of Microset Tool Presetting Technology we have become a system supplier for tool management. Microset perfectly complements our existing portfolio of high-precision tooling, clamping, shrinking and balancing technology, in such a way as to enable us to provide even greater support to our customers.” Automatically highest runout accuracy The level of satisfaction Anton Schweiger, Vice President of the Association of German Tool and Mold Makers (VDWF), has in his partnership with HAIMER and his tool holders can be measured by the fact that he has been using them for more than two decades.

MORE INFORMATION

This is also true for the Microset presetter UNO autofocus 20 | 70, which has its place between the shrinking and the balancing devices at Schweiger.

to the manual version, the UNO autofocus is able to automatically focus the cutting edge for measurement of the C-axis. Especially when it comes to tools with several cutting edges on the circumference, this option proves to be enormously time-saving. All in all, the device allows setup time reductions of up to 70 percent just from presetting outside of the machine.

When the toolmaker bought the first HSC machine about 20 years ago, he switched from mechanical collet chucks to HAIMER shrink fit chucks because of the improved runout accuracy. Compared to the products of other suppliers, the HAIMER shrink fit chucks won him over with its superior quality, “a company goal that HAIMER and ourselves have in 25 | Industry Asia Pacific | July 2018

common.” “If you take the example of the shrink fit chucks, this can be seen in the runout accuracy, which is, by default, below 3 μm.” This is an important prerequisite for the tool makers from Uffing. After all, they do not produce injection molds for cheap consumables, they create highly sophisticated molds used in premium vehicles - for example used to make headlight end plates in 2-component injection molding. These customers place high demands on the end products and do not accept the slightest blemish. Accordingly, the injection molds have to meet similar requirements: as a rule, surfaces should be smooth as glass and tolerances of less than 2/100 mm must be maintained.

MORE INFORMATION

One of Schweiger's main areas of focus in production is the milling of large complex molds, whereby individual workpieces can weigh up to nine tons. The cavities are often very deep. Typically between 300 to 400 mm, sometimes even up to 500 or 600 mm deep. This requires slim shrink fit tool holders, the use of shrink fit extensions as well as tools with extremely long shanks. “Another strength of Haimer. The company offers a large variety of tool holders standard. If required, however, we can always order a wide range of special designs,” emphasizes production manager Orterer. He points again to the extremely good runout accuracy properties, which apply equally to standard and special tool holder designs. Not only do they contribute to excellent machining results, they also spare the spindle and the tools. 25 | Industry Asia Pacific | July 2018

A long tool life enables unmanned operation In general, a longer spindle life means considerable costs savings, but the tool live is even more important in automated production. “In order to work unmanned, I need an absolutely reliable, long-lasting system of spindle, tool holder and tool,” explains Anton Schweiger. Schweiger machines many large injection molds automatically in one clamping operation – for 40 to 50, sometimes even 100 hours, non-stop. A broken tool or even a spindle damage during unmanned operation would be fatal. In addition, a rigid and stable connection is important to achieve the requested surface quality. “A key to this is the Haimer tool holders,” adds the company owner, “they enable process-reliable machining.” Not every requirement of the toolmaker can be optimally fulfilled with standard tool holders. Anton Schweiger especially appreciates the close cooperation with the HAIMER specialists and the flexibility of the company in Igenhausen. “For us it is important that Haimer listens to the users,” emphasizes the entrepreneur. His HAIMER contact, Oliver Lechner, sales manager for Southern Germany, always responds quickly to inquiries. Lechner comments, “After that, we supply Schweiger with the required custom-made products, such as special, conically shaped face mill arbors that allow the machining of cavities up to 360 mm depth.” Anton Schweiger adds, “These tool holders are perfectly adapted to the tool diameter and the respective cavities.

NEWS Anton Schweiger, owner and managing director of the mold making company Schweiger: “In order to be able to operate fully automated, I need a 100% reliable, long-lasting system from the spindle, tool holder and tool. HAIMER supports us in the field of tool management with products of highest quality.”

That is how I can, without any concerns, let the machines work without supervision - even for roughing.” Specialist for complex large-scale molds The tool and mold making company, Schweiger, was founded in 1962 by Erich Schweiger. Today, under the management of his son Anton Schweiger, it has around 75 employees and generates around 10 million Euros in sales each year. Their core business consists of complex injection molds weighing between 5 and 30 tons, 99 percent of which are supplied to the automotive industry. They are mainly used for the production of headlight covers, optical and visual components. Customers include German premium manufacturers, as well as their 1st tiers. In addition to automated production with standardized processes, Schweiger sees its strength in turn-key solutions. The services range from support in product development to series production and aftersales services. www.haimer.biz MORE INFORMATION 25 | Industry Asia Pacific | July 2018

MAGNETOSTRICTIVE LINEAR POSITION SENSOR FOR EXPLOSION HAZARD AREAS

Control and shut-off valves are used for oil and gas transmission in refineries and petrochemical plants. The valve position is regulated using the position measuring systems, because they are extremely reliable, especially in very harsh environments. When explosion protection has the highest priority, the new, certified position measuring system BTL7-T500 from Balluff is the right choice.

W

ith its many international approvals, such as ATEX and IECex, the BTL7-T500 offers a broad range of applications, high reliability and safe operation in explosion hazard areas of Zone 0 and Zone 1. This means for example it can be used as well for continuous level measurement in refinery tanks. The Profibus interface offers great flexibility. The position measuring system can be quickly adapted, saves time in installation and means rapid diagnostics of possible errors. This shortens commissioning time of systems and maintenance when service calls are needed. A single cable suffices for hookup (BUS-in-out, power).

The non-contact and thereby wear-free magnetostrictive measuring system in the stainless steel housing with IP 67 protection is not only extremely insensitive to contamination, but also shock rated to 100 g. It also withstands vibration up to 12 g. With a resolution of 1Âľm and repeat accuracy of 10Âľm it operates with extreme precision and is also the ideal solution when position and speed measurement needs to be performed simultaneously in a system.

MORE INFORMATION

BTL linear magnetostrictive transducers from Balluff in the rod style and installed in hydraulic cylinders have for decades proven their reliability in the most demanding areas of application. The magnetostrictive operating principle allows it to be installed in hermetically sealed housings. The position information is transmitted without contact via magnetic fields through the housing wall into the interior of the sensor. www.balluff.com

onitoring modules of the latest generation, a technologically leading friction system and consistently-observed safety principles – safety brakes by mayr® power transmission are equipped for the challenges of the Industry 4.0. The perfectly-coordinated complete system guarantees the utmost level of operational and functional safety, and increases the productivity of machines and systems through predictive error detection and maintenance. mayr® power transmission presents its brake technology 4.0 at the Hanover Trade Fair 2018.

With Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things and Services enters companies. That’s why mayr® power transmission as the leading manufacturer is already offering reliable safety brakes, which are equipped for the challenges of the forth industrial revolution. Brake technology 4.0 stands for intelligent monitoring modules, by which mayr® power transmission sets new standards. The modules such as the ROBA®-brake-checker and the ROBA®-torqcontrol monitor safety brakes easily and quickly or facilitate the even and smooth deceleration of machines and devices.

MORE INFORMATION

Permanent brake monitoring and predictive maintenance The ROBA®-brake-checker module operates without sensors. Instead, it analyzes current and voltage and recognizes the movement of the armature disk. Thus it knows the condition of the brake. In addition to the switching condition, the module can also deduce the temperature, wear and tension path or tensile force reserve, i.e. whether the magnet still has sufficient force to attract the armature disk. Using the new module, a significantly larger number of processes can be depicted during the monitoring of the safety brakes than was hitherto the case. Within this time, the machine operator can undertake specific maintenance in coordination with their work process – maintenance with foresight, so to speak. The ROBA®-brake-checker is now available in a design for AC voltage. In addition, another version of the module will also in future take on the supply of the brake, and as a result, replace the rectifier. Switching condition monitoring and brake control are therefore combined in one device.

Braking movements gently and in a controlled manner For applications, which require braking torque control in addition to status monitoring, mayr® power transmissions provides the braking torque control module ROBA®torqcontrol. It shares the features of the ROBA®-brakechecker and can also change the level of the braking torque in operation through purposeful influencing of current and voltage. As a result, devices and machines can be evenly and gently decelerated. The ROBA®-torqcontrol module permits the development of control loops and brakes movements intelligently – the ideal basis for its use in smart, interconnected machines.

This module has been developed in collaboration with the company Pilz, especially for applications which have to fulfil requirements for the protection of people according to standards regarding functional safety. The ROBA®SBCplus module must reliably interrupt the current in the magnetic coil when the brake is switched off. For this purpose, the module operates with wear-free electronic semi-conductors, and as a result achieves practically unlimited switching frequency and switching reliability. This brake control module performs reliable switching time monitoring. Furthermore, an integrated plausibility check is conducted through the evaluation of the release monitoring signals. The evaluations of the switching states and the return signal therefore permit reliable error diagnostics. This permits creep errors which influence on the switching times, for example increasing wear, to be detected in due time. The reliable ROBA®-SBCplus brake control unit is type-certified by TÜV Süd (Technical Inspectorate, Southern Germany) and can be used up to the highest Performance Level PLe and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3.

Reliable brake control Another module to continuously monitor the switching condition of the brakes is the safe brake control ROBA®SBCplus. In this module, mayr® power transmission offers safety brakes and safe brake control in a complete package. 25 | Industry Asia Pacific | July 2018

MLC SPG

“Smart Process Gating is the name of a new process from Leuze electronic through which muting processes are made more economical, simpler and safer.

I

n intralogistics as well as in the automotive and packaging industry, material locks often need to be safeguarded against unauthorized access by means of safety sensors. Previously, muting processes with muting sensors were required in order to clearly identify when transported goods are approaching a protective field and to bridge the passing of these goods through the protective field at the correct moment.

MORE INFORMATION

As a result of the SPG (Smart Process Gating) method developed by Leuze electronic, signal-emitting sensors are no longer needed. Based on the MLC safety light curtains, conveyor systems can thus be made more compact. The risk of misalignment or damage to the sensors is eliminated as is the costs for their maintenance and servicing.

25 | Industry Asia Pacific | July 2018

34

Furthermore, the purchasing costs, the wiring and risk of manipulation are reduced which increases the availability of the complete safety device. Particularly in the case of typical intralogistics applications, the height of the protective device is entirely dependent on the safety-related requirements. Synchronization beams do not have to be taken into consideration. With SPG, the first muting signal comes from the process control (PLC), while the second muting signal is generated by the protective field itself. Smart Process Gating requires a detailed knowledge of the process so that the necessary SPS control signals are made available in the expected time window. www.leuze.com

ADEUNIS AND ARC INFORMATIQUE JOIN FORCES TO CREATE A BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM SOLUTION (BMS) INTEGRATING THE IOT UNIVERSE AT THE GRENOBLE ALPES UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Two recognized player in IoT technologies are integrating their solutions to achieve unprecedented IoT equipment integration with an existing Building Management System (BMS) using LoRaWAN technology at the heart.

T

he Grenoble Alpes University Hospital’s technical teams wanted to be able to instrument and control various equipment quickly, inexpensively and without cabling (Ethernet and power). The Grenoble Hospital asked Adeunis and ARC Informatique the question of how to best solve this operational challenge.

In addition, the Hospital expressed the wish to do this with their existing BMS software without adding additional software layers. PcVue supervision published by ARC Informatique, is the BMS in charge of managing two of the Hospital’s sites, the GTB and the GTE site. The first step, of this project consisted of a LoRaWAN radio coverage study of the site. This study, done by the Adeunis team, who are experts in this field, made it possible to identify the best location of the LoRa antenna, to ensure the zones (floors, buildings, parking, etc.) are correctly covered to allow desired positioning of the Adeunis® IoT sensors.

MORE INFORMATION

The LoRaWAN architecture makes it possible to set up a private network, specifically in indoor and deep indoor configurations, while taking advantage of the radio coverage of LoRaWan’s “Long Range” network. Indeed, only one antenna at the top of a building (15th floor) can cover almost all buildings on the site but also reach a second site about 6kms away. The cost of the network infrastructure is therefore very small when compared to a WiFi solution.
