TRIAD OF TORQUE, SPEED AND PRECISION. APPLICATIONS? STEP INTO THE RING
Many applications require drive solutions that have a central opening through which, e.g., light, cables or parts of the application can be guided. Examples of this can be found in optics and photonics for laser steering systems or in automation and robotics for semiconductor handling systems. Until now, conventional systems always resulted in compromises here. The hollow shafts were often quite small, the drives slow, heavy or the mechanical integration required a great deal of work. A new direct drive now offers a promising alternative. Its large opening has a diameter of 40 mm and, thanks to stepper motor technology, achieves a balanced combination of speed and torque with low weight and volume.

here are many drive technologies and solutions available that are generally suitable in cases where a central opening is needed. In practical use, however, each has its own disadvantages. With hybrid stepper motors, for example, the diameter of the hollow shaft is usually limited to approximately 10 to 12 mm on account of the necessary copper filling factor or magnet yoke. Due to their multi-pole design, torque motors do permit larger openings, but cannot achieve high speeds due to their large moving mass. In addition, they are relatively expensive and often difficult to integrate. Many applications therefore use rotary tables with a central opening that are driven by a “normal” motor. Such solutions require transmission and complex mechanics, however. The resulting inevitable backlash needs to be compensated by means of elaborate measures before this type of motor can be used in high28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

precision applications. This complicates system integration considerably. Furthermore, numerous wear parts are involved, which leads to high maintenance requirements. Rotary tables actuated by a hybrid stepper motor are likewise often the tool of choice, but have a large volume and are heavy when higher performance values are called for. Finding a practical solution when the application requires an opening has, thus, not necessarily been easy until now. New approach – new possibilities The drive specialist FAULHABER therefore took up this topic and developed an entirely new drive solution with the stepper motor of the DM66200H series, which is designed especially for applications that require a large opening. With a total diameter of 66 mm, it offers a very large hollow shaft inner diameter of 40 mm. And it is only 24 mm thick and

weighs just 218 g. As a result, the compact drive is easy to mount and requires very little installation space. The rotor with the opening directly drives the mechanics, which are arranged around the opening and does so without transmission. As a result, there is no mechanical backlash that needs to be compensated for. Originally designed for optics and photonics applications, the new hollow shaft direct drive also opens interesting possibilities in many other areas, such as wheel drives in cases where the drive shafts are guided through the motor for space reasons or in prosthetics with artificial knees or shoulders. In principle, it can be used wherever cables need to be guided through the opening or in cases where gases, fluids or light signals are to pass through the opening. Apart from the field of optics – e.g. for microscope stages, apertures, zoom lenses, laser beam controls, etc. – it can thus be used for a wide range of control and positioning tasks. Typical applications also include turntables, antenna feet as well as air and gas vents. MORE INFORMATION
High performance values in optimum combination The direct drive is based on the proven stepper motor technology from FAULHABER. The multi-pole, two-phase motor with permanent magnets delivers 200 steps per revolution. With a high resolution of 1.8° in full-step mode, it can execute positioning tasks precisely in open loop operation. It achieves a dynamic torque of up to 200 mNm and can move correspondingly large loads. The 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021
6
maximum static torque is 307 mNm, and even 581 mNm when boosted. Brakes are thus unnecessary. Speeds of up to 2,000 revolutions per minute can be achieved. For many applications, the compact direct drive thereby offers a perfect balance of speed and torque. It enables maintenance-free continuous operation, as the only wearing part is the ball bearing. Application-specific modifications are possible on request, for example, specific lubricants, customer-specific windings, special cables and connectors as well as mounting flanges. www.faulhaber.com/en/news-events/news/direct-drivewith-very-large-aperture-and-high-performances/

Spoiler alert: This isn’t about secrets. Even though Fischer Connectors is the exclusive connectivity sponsor of American Magic – a challenger for the 36th America’s Cup – and has provided connectors and solutions for many racing yachts over the past five decades, we can’t give away any of our trusted partners’ competitive secrets. This article is about the lessons learned working on various racing yachts over time, and how some of the latest connector technology and strategies used in racing can be applied to other real-world applications.

Racing into 2021 From the moment the America’s Cup AC75 class rule was first published on March 29, 2018 by the current America’s Cup Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, challenger teams have been designing and engineering their boats within the set rules to give them every possible edge in a temperamental racing environment. In fact, American Magic spent over 76,000 man hours producing its first AC75, DEFIANT. So, what are the stats for an AC75? • Length: 22.76 m • Width: 5 m • Weight 6.4 tons • Crew: 11 • Crew weight: 990 kilos • Construction: carbon fiber and double-skinned soft mainsails • Construction hours: 76,000+ • Design hours: 90,000+ • CNC machine and/or 3D printing hours: 45,000 • Individual parts: 25,000 • Sensors: 400+
Racing yachts such as the UK Team Ineos’ “Britannia” are estimated to have over 300 sensors on board to help guide sailors by giving race teams realtime data on changing conditions. Copyright: Chris Ison
All of this development comes at a significant cost to the teams entering the America’s Cup. To put this into context, the last event in 2017, held in Bermuda and won by Emirates Team New Zealand, is believed to have cost upwards of USD 100 million, with some teams reporting that they had to pay twice this figure to actually become competitive for the Cup. Races can be won or lost in the design, construction, and/or operational phases. Even fractions of seconds are of critical importance in a race for the America’s Cup and for the pride of a nation. Despite huge R&D budgets, it’s ultimately the team of 11 sailors working as one in precise harmony that determines who’ll be the winners on race day. So, the engineering teams do everything they can to give their sailors the advantage.
Given the strict weight criteria for such a “flying machine”, designers and engineers are constantly deliberating over each component used on the vessel: Will it deliver during practice, during the race, once or over time? Is it rugged enough? Is it too heavy? Is it really needed? The Importance of Interconnect Solutions Reliability in both the sensors and connector solutions is essential. Maintainability is critical, as is IP (Ingress Protection) sealing and the ability to withstand saltwater ingress and spray. Elevated temperatures are also a challenge to connector solutions, as most electronics are stored (and operated) in sealed airless compartments and may be exposed to extreme solar heating. Indeed, a black carbon panel can easily reach above 70°C in the UK sunshine – let alone in New Zealand! These places significant duress on the reliability and functionality of the electronics enclosed within.

Lesson One: Sensors Create Real-Time Data for Immediate Decision Making Sailors and their support teams operating in high-pressure situations have to deal with many more variables than, say, the driver of a “simple” NASCAR vehicle. Wind speed and direction, water movement, water temperature, hull angle and foil position are all variables in yacht racing that can not only affect each vessel differently, but also change constantly during the race. Sensors are everywhere on the boat, from the foils to the wingsail, gathering data that enable sailors to calculate and use them to their advantage. Additionally, sensors help to adjust strategies or tactics in a
fraction of a second if they get the right information at the opportune moment.
Fiber Optic Plays an Important Role One area of great interest beyond the use of conventional copper wired interconnect solutions is the use of fiber optics for data transmission. In the America’s Cup in 2017, fiber optic sensors were embedded in the race boat foils and in other key components. This allowed the team to measure, 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

Fiber optic sensors embedded in race boat foils can be used to measure the lift, drag and horizontal force generated by the foil in real time. Image courtesy of Epsilon Optics www.epsilonoptics.com/marine.html. Fischer Connectors’ ruggedized optical connectors are used in the UK-based company’s latest sensor system.
This was demonstrated to greatest effect in the 2019 Sail GP event in Cowes on the UK’s Isle of Wight. There Tom Slingsby’s Australian Team utilised the foils in a completely different mode than any competitor, sailing three races with the bow firmly down, reducing the rudder loads, and maintaining control in winds of over 25 knots. The result was three straight wins over the remaining international competitors. Fiber optic devices tend to be smaller and lighter than the conventional copper. The cable is essentially a glass tube less than 2 mm in diameter. It comprises layers protecting the fiber glass that propagates data using light energy, which is converted into an electrical signal at the destination source. In essence, data speeds move in near perfect conditions within the fiber, resulting in the highest data transfer rates, without loss or low delay. Another advantage of fiber optics is the ability to physically embed these miniature single-strand sensors into the laminated carbon structures of the boat, without affecting the structural integrity of the foil or mast/wing section or the functionality of the hardware. These embedded sensors also ensure you can monitor potential breakages of such highly stressed parts of the boat at all times and avoid them if at all possible. Clearly, these items are very asset-sensitive due to cost, material and build time; hence only the most appropriate cabling and connector systems can help ensure longevity and avoid delays in this challenging environment.
analyse, predict and optimise the design of the parts, while keeping stress levels under control. If set correctly, the foil offers both lift and drag, similar to an aircraft wing in flight. “The electronics and data acquisition on an America’s Cup yacht such as American Magic’s Patriot are absolutely crucial to our success,” says Antoine Sigg, Fiber Optic, American Magic. “Loads of data streams are processed constantly, feed models, trigger alarms and help the sailor to make adjustments for wind, attitude and stresses on the boat. It’s essential that the connectivity solution deliver accurate data. The fiber optic solutions from Fischer Connectors help us have simple and reliable connections to many key zones on the boat, especially where lines are connected and disconnected daily. They link the boat system to moving parts, and the robustness of the Fischer FiberOptic Series is used at its full potential to withstand shocks, fast movements and exposure to the elements in a firehose-like environment.”
MORE INFORMATION
In a racing yacht, the foil rake and angle of attack are adjusted for different points of sailing (upwind and downwind) and different wind strengths. Getting real-time information from the sensors through fiber optic connections allows optimisation of the foil angle and load, providing the appropriate lift for any given displacement and wind condition.
28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021
10
A final significant benefit for the AC75 is the weight advantage offered by this type of fiber optic. When considering electronics control systems on board boats, it’s fair to assume most yachts carry in excess of 60 kg of wire for their control and instrumentation circuits. This weight can be greatly reduced if the traditional copper is replaced with state-of-the-art, high-capability fiber. Data as a Commodity As reported by Martin Whitmarsh, CEO of Land Rover BAR, with all this live real-time data from in excess of 400 sensors per boat*, it’s a veritable treasure trove of data. It’s essential that adequate data connection, onward transmission, storage and subsequent analysis are performed for all modes of sailing and conditions. As a dinghy sailor myself, I consider my surroundings and speed while sailing, just two variables that affect my performance. For these highperformance racing yachts, however, sailors consider up to an estimated 300 variables simultaneously to evaluate and adjust performance, including water time, flight time, speed, boat position, angle, loads, foils and rudder angle. To do this perfectly in a race requires gathering, transmitting, analyse and acting on reliable data. In 2017, it was estimated that Team Oracle’s boat accumulated between 200 GB and 500 GB of data every day. It’s no wonder that so much data crunching is needed to ensure you can optimise the performance of every element for live sailing conditions. This explains the involvement of companies like database giants Oracle and Dell EMC in the last America’s Cup and, more recently, Hewlett Packard for this 2021 campaign. Clearly, reliable data management ensures the boat performs as competitively as possible and defines a clear configuration setup for each and every condition that the boat is raced in. Recent reports from the teams out in New Zealand suggest that the typical data now being collected by this year’s
Catamarans in previous America’s Cup races may not have been the first to utilise “big data” during competitive sailing for real-time and post-race analysis, but they pushed ideas that led to today’s electronics designs. Copyright: Stuart Doe
Cup teams are in excess of 1 billion data entry points. This makes the data collation and sifting activity a significant contribution to the teams’ performance and understanding of the data variables, with significant implications for performance.
resistant to water ingress (IP rated) and harsh saltwater corrosion. As previously mentioned, weight is also a critical performance criterion for any foiling craft, so the provision and support of this technology is often a balance against weight, performance, functionality and cost.
Lesson Two: Connected Technology and the Internet of (Boating) Things To help them race today, every single competitive racing yacht utilises world-leading engineering and design, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, data analytics and data modeling.
The use of real-time data from these sensors is pivotal to both design measurement simulation and actual optimal performance, thereby allowing both prediction and practice of the fastest method of sailing in pursuit of the Cup. This is also true of weather measurement, and wind and wave prediction. If one side of the course is favorable for optimal performance, it’s key to identify tactically how and where patterns of wind will be emerging. This is especially the case in New Zealand, with its interesting harbor course and sheltered racing areas.
Ease of accessibility and interconnectivity between these sensors and any instrumentation are critical and, of course, the performance of any marine-based connector must be
It isn’t just the racing yachts that are outfitted with a myriad of sensors. Chase boats and support vessels are deployed prior to the event to survey, mark out and ensure sailing areas are clear of underwater obstructions. All these vessels use 3D sonar scans and data overlaid on conventional chart plotters, which are updated live via 4G networks. Teams are increasingly utilise the higher bandwidth and live-streaming capabilities of 5G that became available with significant infrastructure updates during the end of last year.

Modern racing boats take full advantage of the IoT, integrating hundreds of sensors taking various measurements – including state-of-the-art sensors for wind measurement, speed and angle, accelerometers, and a significant number of load sensors buried deep within the mast/rig and foil construction. These load meters are also supported by numerous water-based sensors calculating GPS, depth, turbulence and temperature and, most importantly, speed. This was shown on the SAIL GP event in 2019, when two methods of boat speed were needed to validate the over 50 Knots (57.5 mph!) achieved by both the Australian and UK teams during this race series.
The reduced latency and higher bandwidth of 5G means Emirates Team New Zealand is now able to live stream 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

data and video back to engineers and designers at the base straight off the new AC75 boat. Dan Bernasconi, Head of Design for Emirates Team New Zealand, said in a 2019 Yachts and Yachting interview that the 5G service is a game changer for the team. “There’s a huge amount of innovation in the design and build of the AC75. The boat is a completely new concept, so we need to be able to push the potential of this boat to its extreme in testing,” Bernasconi commented. Prompt onward data transmission in all areas is critical for the teams to support live monitoring and performance enhancement. Broadcast-Quality Communications on Every Boat Transmitting information to the base team for their use is a given, but racing organizations also have technical information available worldwide, broadcasting on multiple platforms and applications, even to devices carried in a spectator’s hand.

The sailing world first saw the production of stadium-style racing introduced in the late 1990s. These boats, like those competing for the 2021 America’s Cup, were live-streaming on-board video and telemetry data, along with audio, directly to audiences. With ever more information and data from the boats now being displayed live to audiences through traditional broadcasts, interactive apps and across the Web, etc., the races come even closer to those on spectator boats or on shore. All cases require robust and 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

secure connectivity boat-to-boat and boat-to-shore to facilitate this. Lesson Three: Innovation and the Connected Team With enormous budgets on these boats, even for high-end racing, it’s clear that every team is pushing the frontiers of technology, science, innovation and performance of the boat and the crew. That’s only what we know about now, not what’s being kept secret! In years gone by, the crew was there to provide power to drive the winches for sail movement and trim. While this is still the case to some degree, there’s also a small amount of battery support topped up by the crew grinders. Crew role, weight and performance output have now become critical. This means, in addition to data gathered from the boat itself, there’s now far more interest in the biographical data from the crew itself, along with individual communication and data sharing on board the boats. Years ago, wind noise was not an issue for the sailors, who now travel at speeds in excess of 60 mph. Specialist headsets and microphones had to be generated to allow interconnected radios among the team members. Buoyancy aids now hold radios, batteries and multiple interconnects between buoyancy aid and headsets. Each sailor is effectively a network-connected worker and, with today’s technology, it’s possible to monitor individual

heart rates, biometrics, temperature and performance of the entire team. Such monitoring manages the physical elements of the sailing team and adjusts and optimises for peak performance during the critical race season. Applying the Lessons The key to applying the lessons of high-end racing to other, less dynamic, industrial or instrumentation applications is to understand the impact of the data you need. Not everyone needs 400 sensors, but when you do, it’s important to have a connectivity strategy that delivers the data in meaningful, actionable ways. Consider how much data you need to be able to move and how fast it needs to travel. Use the Internet and analytical tools, including artificial intelligence (AI), to make faster decisions that push you forward. Remove unnecessary weight while increasing data transmission with fiber optic solutions. If IoT strategies and technology are available to racing yachts, then they can be available to any application, anywhere.

STAGEMAKER HOISTS AS GUARANTOR OF SAFE EQUIPMENT IN NIKULIN MOSCOW CIRCUS ON TSVETNOY BOULEVARD
NIKULIN MOSCOW CIRCUS on Tsvetnoy Boulevard arena is entered by world-known circus family Tony, horses dance, performing tigers show tricks, clown Davis Vassallo entertains the public, trapeze artists and acrobats and even ventriloquist are performing!
T
his is all about the new circus show “Fantastica” with its thoughtful scenery, surprising visual effects and bright transformations, which premiered on February 21, 2020. Our oldest NIKULIN MOSCOW CIRCUS on Tsvetnoy Boulevard, the brand we are proud of, had been always known as a traditional and classical circus. Nevertheless time calls for changes, and brand-new show that was prepared during winter 2019-20 turned out to be very technically intense, with usage of the most modern technologies.
MORE INFORMATION
The show was created and directed with the help of Antonio Giarola from Italy. He is known for staging all the carnivals in Verona and Venice, and a number of horse shows in Europe. His wife, a choreographer, brilliantly coped with directing colorful fancy-dress dance numbers. The show is based on famous fairy tales and features not only items with performing animals, but whole number of light special effects and surprises. Surprises start from the circus foyer. Director’s idea of talking trees took shape to create the atmosphere, complying with new show style. At the intermediate levels there are two talking trees, and at the 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

next level there are arches, symbolizing passage into the fairy world. Spectacular new decorations were purchased especially for the new program. They use LED technologies – selfluminous and high-resolution LED screens. Kinetic balls have not been used during circus performances before. Since the circus height to the grate is 23 meters, they have ordered high-speed balls with lifting height of 18 meters and speed of 2 meters per second (standard kinetic balls have lifting height of 9-12 meters and speed of 0.7 meters per second). Well-arranged light is of great importance for the overall perception of the performance, and great attention is paid to technologies to ensure high-quality suspension in the Circus. NIKULIN MOSCOW CIRCUS on Tsvetnoy Boulevard made a bet on safe and high-quality winches of the new generation very much on time, moving in step with the advanced world trends. When D8 plus class hoists that do not need additional belaying, began to be used in Europe and America, providing a new level of safety, the circus also switched to them.
For the new show “Fantastica”, two farms were placed under the circus dome, on which a large curtain with an adjustment of the lifting speed was suspended.
First STAGEMAKER hoists were purchased about 6 years ago to replace farms that are suspended over the audience sectors. After this 4 more hoists STAGEMAKER SR10 with loading capacity 500 kg and lifting speed 16 meters per min were bought. They were used for the air show, which took part in Monte Carlo festival last year and was awarded with the Silver Clown. Gymnasts perform over safety net and the hoists actually replaced people for pulling the net during installation. The hoists actually replaced people for pulling the net during its installation. They stop automatically when the maximum load is reached, and this feature of STAGEMAKER hoists was well used for the show. For the new show “Fantastica”, two farms were placed under the circus dome, on which a large curtain with an adjustment of the lifting speed was suspended. The suspension of the trusses was made on 18 STAGEMAKER SR10.504m2-A20 hoists (500 kg, double brake, class D8 +). Lighting devices and kinetic balls also hang on these farms. Now total number of STAGEMAKER hoists that the circus has is 26 pieces.
The public doesn’t see the hoists during the show. But they are very important, like underwater part of iceberg, and play one of the key roles. Withstanding the weight of all equipment, they must be hundred per cent reliable, because they are entrusted with the safety of spectators and artists, directly above the heads of which they are located. The show premiered on February 21, the performance was shown about 10 times, and then it was suspended due to the closure of all public events, and will soon be resumed and continued. Critics noted a bright and unusual production, so those spectators who did not have time to watch the show will be able to visit the circus and plunge into childhood and joy beginning of this autumn.

Vladimir Tarasov, head of stage equipment and lighting department of NIKULIN MOSCOW CIRCUS on Tsvetnoy Boulevard, thanked Verlinde, STAGEMAKER hoists producer and their partners Sofit Light. He said: “Advanced STAGEMAKER hoists now carry all the equipment needed for the “Fantastica” show, and this is a large number of lighting devices. 4 hoists hold only sound equipment, and the remaining 18 – all farms that have a net, kinetic balls, all light
equipment. There are not many manufacturers on the market who make quality hoists. In addition to considerations of quality, cost and logistics issues, our choice was influenced by the comfort and pleasure of communicating with longstanding partners. It’s also convenient that STAGEMAKER has many distributors in Moscow who help with after-sales service.”

A large-scale project in Qatar ATS CRANES was approached to supply two jib cranes to ISF camps (Internal Security Forces) at Al Duhail near Doha in Qatar. ISF is a large scale project whose delivery is planned for 2025 and for mixed use: more than 330 buildings and specialist installations are planned spread over an impressive surface area of 400 hectares. The camp should host a population of almost 20,000 residents and employees. Besides residential buildings, the area is designed to offer functional, administrative and recreational activities such as a five-star hotel and a stadium for 10,000 spectators. This is the first project in Qatar aimed at obtaining QSAS certification (“Qatar Sustainability Assessment System”), whose objective is to promote sustainability in the building industry and to encourage synergy between new forms of development and their environments. The project will embrace vast areas to be developed and infrastructures across the site such as rain water reservoirs for drinking and irrigation purposes of a total capacity of some 65,000 m3, roughly 12 km of roads, various surface and underground parking lots or even a secured boundary wall 9 metres high together with its associated main entrance.
Tough and well-designed jib cranes ATS CRANES was consulted for the installation of two EUROSTYLE type VFM 1.25 t jib cranes with an 8 m motorized full revolution boom and EUROCHAIN VR electric chain hoists for the maintenance of the drinking water pumping station. The jib cranes will be used for lifting pumps and accessories during maintenance, as well as for loading and unloading material from trucks. The loads to be handled weigh approximately 800 to 900 kg. For ISF, delivery and installation within a specific timeframe were essential and the ATS team, in coordination with VERLINDE, respected its commitment. The jib crane was designed according to the customer’s specifications and is suited for operation in a hot and humid outdoor environment. Its design is stylish. This last point was particularly important since the jib cranes are located next to the indoor garden/park and therefore visible from a great distance.
AL Jaber, with whom they have worked for many years. ATS CRANES has regularly supplied it with VERLINDE equipment for pumping stations. Rahul Shetty, Managing Director of ATS CRANES, concludes: “The jib cranes we have installed are extremely efficient. Tested on site with 1.25 times their safe working load (SWL), they are well designed and appropriate for the needs of ISF, for handling pumping material in the most difficult of exterior environments. The ATS CRANES team has great experience and will ensure after-sales and fast maintenance operations. We aim for excellence and the satisfaction of our customers.” www.verlinde.com

FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A VACCINE LOGISTICS SYSTEM: DEEP-FREEZE STORAGE IN CONTAINERS DESIGN
Once an effective COVID19 vaccine is available in the required quantities and is to be delivered to the vaccination centres, a specific logistical task also needs to be addressed: The vaccine must be transported at a temperature of at least -70ºC to -80ºC and stored on site at the vaccination centre. L&R Kältetechnik has developed a safe, flexible and economical concept for this demanding type of deep-freeze storage: a deep-freeze storage system that is installed in an industrial container.
L MORE INFORMATION
&R has extensive experience with the deep-freeze storage of sensitive active pharmaceutical ingredients and products. Vaccine serums, blood plasma, stem cells, bone marrow and biomedical materials are among the stored goods that are kept in the walk-in L&R deep-freeze storage at temperatures down to -110°C. Such storage is in use at many pharmaceutical manufacturers - among other reasons also because they are more reliable, efficient and energy-saving than laboratory freezers.
Based on this experience, L&R has now developed a solution with which millions of vaccine doses can be stored at -80°C. The basic idea: The storage cell -80°C with a precooling room -20°C is installed in an industrial container with corresponding redundant, multi-stage refrigeration technology in order to guarantee a storage option that is suitable for pharmaceuticals. Two highly efficient refrigeration systems are installed in the 20’ or 40’ containers, each of which ensures a permanent temperature level below -70°C. The systems are air-cooled, so only one main connection is required for the operation. And they have a redundant design so that if one refrigerating circuit fails, the second circuit can automatically take over the cooling. An optional emergency power supply or nitrogen emergency cooling (LN2) offers an even higher level of safety. The interior equipment of the cryogenic storage is adapted to user requirements. Pallet storage spaces are possible as

well as shelves and/or drawers for different product sizes. Optionally, the interior can be manufactured with a stainless steel floor according to clean room standards. The highly effective insulation ensures a low heat transfer coefficient. This increases the temperature holding time and reduces the energy requirement.
Over the rest of their lifetime, the mobile deep-freeze stores can afterwards be used at other locations and for other tasks. More information about L&R cooling technology: https://www.lr-kaelte.de/startseite.html
The deep-freeze containers comply with GMP requirements; they are optionally supplied with FDA approval for materials in contact with the product. Via the touch panel of the Siemens PLC, the user can control the system comfortably, and visualize the process. Remote maintenance is possible as well as GPS positioning of the container. Further options are realised according to the customers’ specifications.
MORE INFORMATION
In the construction of this deep-freeze storage system, attention was not only paid to maximum safety and high energy efficiency: the worldwide availability of the components also played a role. Burkhard Rüßmann, general manager of L&R Kältetechnik: “When the vaccine production starts, the logistics must be available all the way up to the vaccination centres - not only in Germany. That’s why we have made sure that our production is scalable over a wide range.” The container design is the basis for the high-quality systems to be set up with very little effort exactly where the vaccination is carried out. And it offers another advantage: 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

VISION LABS CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THANKS TO KEYENCE
More than six in 10 people in the UK have some requirement for glasses, meaning the range of lens combinations required to suit all of their needs are almost infinite. Significant effort goes into the cutting, polishing and treatment of every lens. Given the importance of ensuring the correct prescription, and the proximity of the lens to the wearer’s eye, any sort of defect simply cannot be countenanced.
MORE INFORMATION
O
ne of the UK’s leading manufacturers of bespoke lenses, and a partner of 20 years plus to many of the leading names in the dispensing optician sector, is Vision Labs Ltd. Its specialist facility at Kidderminster in Worcestershire processes millions of lenses every year, each one tailored to the needs of the individual customer.
Anthony Woodhouse, Technical Manager of Vision Labs, explains: “Given the volume of lenses we process, any defect with a lens or issue with production needs to be identified and remedied quickly, or we face a backlog in production which can impact on our delivery schedules and overall service to customers.
A complex technical process Raw plastic material is cut to the required geometry by CNC milling and turning equipment, before a high-speed polishing process smooths the lens and removes any remnants from the milling and turning processes. Each lens then undergoes a visual inspection and verification against the patient’s prescription, before undergoing any treatments required such as tinting, UV protection and the application of scratch- resistant coatings and the latest multi-layer anti-reflection coatings, as needed.
“All of our processing equipment is calibrated to very tight tolerances – as little as two microns – to ensure the best possible product quality and life cycle for consumables. However, all CNC equipment can be prone to positioning errors over time, emanating from natural wear and tear, or moving parts which are coming to the end of their lives and require replacement.
28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021
22
“During manufacture, each lens is subject to various levels of stress and heat. If these are not managed correctly, issues may arise which mean the lens may be rejected. In that event, we have to spend time investigating what has happened to determine the root cause then take any remedial action needed.
Machining accuracy is vital “Key to minimising the risk of defects is ensuring optimal machining machine tool accuracy. Previously we assessed this based in tool displacement using an eye glass with a scale. However, this method has limitations, even for the highly experienced tool setters within our team,” says Anthony Woodhouse. Because of these challenges, the management team at Vision Labs sought another solution, and it came in the form of a Keyence VHX-7000 digital microscope. The system’s high magnification and 4,000 pixel count – the world’s first microscope to offer this – combined with twodimensional edge detection software which snaps to the lines of contrast meaning the risk of differences between users is eliminated, allows calibration tolerances as low as 0.1 microns.
Perhaps the greatest benefit has come in the area of analyse coatings, where the VHX’s world first optical shadow effect mode (OPT-SEM) allows these transparent features to be viewed more readily and so defects identified more rapidly.
Anthony Woodhouse continues: “The Keyence microscope is easy to use and gives us incredibly accurate and detailed information. removes the issues associated with the previous visual testing, as it enables us to calibrate our machines extremely accurately and counter any issues in our processes. It has enabled us to view defects in a way that was not possible before, equipping us with a better understanding of how they occur – and how we can minimise the risk of defects. “We had used other Keyence equipment with great success for a number of years and so we were already aware not just of the quality of their products, but the depth of support and training that would be provided. The feedback from colleagues has been fantastic. Overall, we have great confidence in both the equipment and the Keyence team.” “This latest investment in Keyence equipment has resulted in higher-quality products, fewer interruptions to production and enhanced cutting tool lifetimes – meaning a significant impact on our productivity, service and the bottom line.”
MORE INFORMATION
Meanwhile, the glare removal feature and rapid 3D depth composition, combined with the VHX’s easy-to-use of software, meant that wear on diamond cutting tools can be rapidly assessed to ensure they are replaced only when needed, creating cost savings for Vision Labs.
The multi-lighting feature, allowing immediate change between ring, coaxial, polarised and transmitted lighting, also assists the clarity of view.

LEFAE IS QUALIFIED FOR TESTING IN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE
Lefae is the Emitech Group’s laboratory specializing in environmental testing with severe constraints: fire testing and combined climatic testing. Based in Saint-Chamond in the Rhône-Alpes region, it has just qualified a new testing facility for verifying the conformity of equipment installed in potentially explosive zones (equivalent to ATEX requirements) in the presence of hydrocarbon fluids and vapours. Conditions of explosivity are often found in the aeronautics industry, but also in the automotive and marine industries.
L
efae’s new qualified test bench is designed for carrying out tests in an explosive atmosphere. These tests specify the requirements and procedures for aircraft equipment which could come into contact with flammable fluids and vapours. This equipment is generally associated with fuelling systems, such as tanks, pump units, valves, monitoring and control instruments, etc. This type of test encompasses both normal and fault conditions potentially occurring in zones that are or may be in contact with flammable fluids and vapours during flight operations.
The conditions for explosivity are obtained by producing a stoichiometric air/fuel mixture in sufficient proportions to exceed the Lower Explosivity Limit (L.E.L.) of this mixture. The nature of the components of this mixture must be taken into account as well as the conditions of temperature and pressure under which the mixture is created. Flammable test fluids, vapours or gases simulate those normally used in conventional aircraft and which require oxygen for combustion.
MORE INFORMATION
Testing in a real environment The tests performed by Lefae comply with the requirements of EUROCAT-ED-14D, RTCA DO-160, MIL-STD-810 standards. They enable functional tests to be run on the equipment in an explosive atmosphere without triggering the explosion of the stoichiometric air/fuel mixture. They evaluate the capacity of the protective enclosure (ATEX requirement) of the equipment under test to contain an explosion or a flame when the equipment is activated. The characterization of the containment is then carried out by introducing the 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

explosive mixture and then triggering it. The test also reveals increases in the temperature of the circuits or components in hydraulic or exhaust systems for example, and intermittent or permanent hotspots capable of triggering the explosion of the mixture. Lefae carries out tests in a real environment and all climatic, mechanical, hydraulic or electrical conditions. The test bench has been designed to the following specifications: the chamber volume is 450 dm3, absolute pressure conditions up to 12,200 meters (40,000 feet) in altitude, temperatures up to 120°C (248°F). Sealed passages are available in the walls of the test chamber to accommodate controls or supply to the equipment under test, for example electrical controls, fluid supply or mechanical activation.
of ISO 17025 standards. Measurement results and the associated test reports are established in accordance with the objectives and requirements expressed by customers and/or regulatory authorities. Emitech is the only group in France addressing all test sequences (climatic, vibration and explosion) in their entirety. It acts as a single point of contact, able to anticipate and deal with anomalies. www.lab-lefae.com www.emitech.fr
MORE INFORMATION
The bench can also be used to investigate the behaviour of intrinsically explosive products and analyse the toxic gases resulting from their explosion. For example, Lefae conducts studies on the thermal runaway of Lithium Ion cells and batteries. Explosions and fires triggered by thermal runaway are analysed to determine the explosion pressure, the start of the fire and to analyse the toxicity threshold of gases produced during cell or battery failure. A team of engineers and test laboratory technicians, some thirty people, supports Emitech’s customers in the execution of these high-risk tests. The test methods and equipment are implemented in compliance with the requirements 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

INSIGHTS FROM THE FIELD: ENSURING WORKPLACE SAFETY USING THERMAL CAMERA SCREENING FOR ENTRY CONTROL
The Insights from the Field series features insight from FLIR experts who recommend, deploy, and use thermal imaging technology every day. Join us as we discuss the diverse applications of thermal technology in security, safety, and equipment protection for critical infrastructure.
E
pidemics and pandemics can leave large enterprises that employ and receive thousands of people vulnerable to widespread infection and business interruptions. Without the right entry protocols in place, an employee who has symptoms of an infectious disease, such as a fever, could enter a facility and put the entire workforce at risk of exposure.
MORE INFORMATION
Elevated Skin Temperature Screening Major businesses are ramping up their workforce safety best practices by deploying FLIR thermal cameras for elevated skin temperature measurement. Registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these non-contact thermal cameras measure skin surface temperature at the inner canthus (or corner of a person’s eye). FLIR thermal cameras that are engineered for elevated skin temperature screening can achieve accuracies of ±0.3°C (0.5°F) over a temperature measurement range of 15°C to 45°C (59°F to 113 °F). This aligns with the U.S. FDA Guidance for Industry and Food and Drug Administration Staff as well as with ISO/ TR 13154 specification. factors—including handheld, tripod mounted, or fixedmounted—optimised for a variety of application needs. Infrared thermography can detect elevated skin temperatures, which may indicate the presence of a fever. When followed by a screening with a medical device designed specifically for measuring body temperature, such as a thermometer, the use of an infrared camera as an adjunctive diagnostic tool may help contain or limit the spread of viral diseases such as bird flu, swine flu, or COVID-19. Case In Point In the wake of COVID-19, businesses across the critical infrastructure market rapidly adopted thermal cameras for elevated skin temperature screening. In the utility sector, the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response notes how energy utilities are updating their entry protocols in response to COVID-19. Practices now include wellness questionnaires to check for symptoms as well as temperature checks conducted through tools such as thermal cameras.
General Motors (GM) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of motor vehicles, has over 85,000 employees in the United States, and has some plants that employ 1,000 people in a given shift. In May 2020, GM deployed 377 FLIR thermal cameras across 72 sites to help limit the spread of COVID-19. Healthcare facilities are also installing FLIR solutions; for example, the VA Medical Centre in Manchester, New Hampshire deployed FLIR thermal cameras to screen all patients and staff for elevated skin temperature prior to them entering the building. In the transportation sector, Emirates airlines deployed FLIR thermal cameras at departure gates for all U.S. gateways beginning in March 2020. Guests travelling on U.S. bound flights out of the Dubai International Airport are screened for elevated skin temperature.
Implementation Recommendations As critical infrastructure businesses shift their attention towards the long-term implementation of thermal cameras for elevated skin temperature screening, there are multiple deployment practices to consider. Here are a few recommendations from our team of experts. Choose a Certified Camera – To ensure optimal reliability and deployment success, choose a thermal camera specifically designed for elevated skin temperature screening with a 510(k) filing (K033967) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. When looking to integrate this thermal camera into an existing video management system, make sure the camera is ONVIF-compliant. Other screening standards should be considered including ISO/ TR 13154:2017 and IEC 80601-2-59:2017.
MORE INFORMATION
Greater Adoption Into Security Solutions As more critical infrastructure organizations deploy thermal cameras for elevated skin temperature screening, they will likely prompt greater long-term adoption and integration of radiometric thermal cameras into the overall security and safety solution. Here’s why. While temperature screening of employees and guests often falls under the purview of Environmental Health and Safety or Occupational Health and Safety teams, not every business has a dedicated EHS or OHS staff. As a result, many organizations are tasking their security teams to vet and implement screening solutions.
Security officers as well as security equipment, such as surveillance cameras and metal detectors, are already in place at key entry points in a facility. As a result, many security officers must play a dual role as the frontline personnel required to use handheld or tripod mounted thermal cameras to conduct elevated skin temperature screening. Adding a thermal camera for elevated skin temperature screening is a logical addition to existing video surveillance solutions.
Select a Camera with High Resolution – It’s important to use a high-resolution thermal camera for elevated skin 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021
27
temperature screening so you can capture the right pixels to yield accurate readings. Ensure Proper Distance for Screening – Distance matters. Make sure the camera is placed at the manufacturer’s recommended distance away from the individual so the camera can focus. Ensure the camera is stabilized so that the camera will deliver consistent measurements. Place a neutral backdrop a few feet behind the location where the person will be screened, and only screen one person at a time to identify temperature anomalies.
MORE INFORMATION
Measure the Right Spot – While the forehead is easier to quickly screen, it is more susceptible to environmental interferences and more likely to generate measurement errors. Research has shown that the corner of the eye—the region medially adjacent to the inner canthus—provides a more accurate estimate of core body temperature than other areas of skin. This is because skin at the canthi is thin (decreasing insulating effects) is less exposed to environmental factors, and is directly over major arteries which increase blood flow and heat transfer. Set an Alarm Threshold – For FLIR cameras with a ScreenEST mode, set an alarm upon detection of a specific skin temperature compared against a sample average of temperature value. Because skin temperature can vary multiple degrees throughout the day based on the environment and other factors, FLIR Screen-EST mode 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

gathers temperatures from several individuals to determine an average that can be updated throughout the screening operation. This is a defining feature and capability for the FLIR cameras for elevated skin temperature screening. For more installation and operation tips, visit Frequently Asked Questions: www.flir.com

GEOFIRE LAUNCHES DEAF ALERT HOME PILLOW ALARM TO WAKE HARD OF HEARING IN THE EVENT OF FIRE Innovators in fire technology, Geofire, have launched the Deaf Alert, a safety device for the deaf and hard of hearing.
T
he Deaf Alert is a digital, vibrating pillow alarm that uses ‘listening’ technology to activate on the specific sound of a home smoke alarm.
Geofire has manufactured fire safety products in the UK since 1972. The Deaf Alert will join the Agrippa acoustic product line which includes the battery powered fire door holder and closer. The acoustic technology used among Agrippa’s wire-free products allows the unit to learn the specific sound of the smoke alarm ensuring activation upon hearing only the specific sound rather than any loud noise. In the event of the smoke alarm sounding, the Deaf Alert unit wakes the user by displaying a visual ‘FIRE’ warning, flashing high intensity LED lights and vibrating the pad under the user’s pillow.
“During a time where more people are at home than ever before, it is an honour to be able to provide a solution that both protects, as well as, solves a problem for the deaf and hard of hearing community. “Thanks to our distributors and online retailers, we have been able to ensure our products are available and accessible to all online during the pandemic.” Powered by mains, with a backup battery supply, the Deaf Alert ensures fail-safe operation should power be lost and requires next to no installation. The compact and unimposing unit includes a LED time display and alarm clock function. MORE INFORMATION
A shocking statistic from the Home Office reported that house fires without a working smoke alarm are around eight times more likely to result in a fatality. As one in six people in the UK are living with hearing loss, a staggering amount of the population is vulnerable in the event of a house fire.
Andy Collinson, CEO at Geofire, said: “We are proud to launch the Deaf Alert and extend our innovative fire safety product offering into the home. Since the launch of the original Agrippa Pillow Alarm into hotels and commercial buildings in 2015, the demand for a product that could offer the same peace of mind in the home was staggering.

PROCESS
DE DIETRICH PROCESS SYSTEMS ADDS A NEW FUNCTION TO ITS MULTIPROBE SAMPLING SYSTEM With its Multiprobe sampling system, De Dietrich Process Systems has established a reputation in the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals markets for safety and versatility, while continuing to adapt it to the needs of its customers.
F
or several years now, Multiprobe, has been available from De Dietrich Process Systems. It is a simple solution for taking samples in complete safety which offers many advantages, including representative sampling directly at the heart of the reaction while the process is ongoing, as well as temperature and pH measurements and a baffling function. All this can be carried out even when the reactor is working under pressure or vacuum, without having to open the manhole, thereby ensuring operator safety. The sample is thus perfectly representative of the product since it is taken from the heart of the reaction process. It undergoes no physical or chemical alteration during its transfer to the sample flask. In addition, the ability to take a truly representative sample without having to depressurize the reactor or without losing the inert atmosphere makes Multiprobe ideal for chemical and pharmaceutical processes where the risk of contamination is usually a problem during sampling. A new dosing function Now, in response to customer demand, De Dietrich Process Systems has introduced a new function in addition to those already mentioned: the injection of a reagent or catalyst into the heart of the reaction medium. This function, designed and customised based on each customer’s individual specifications, make it possible to safely inject a defined quantity of liquid product, even a small quantity (a few tens of grams) in a short time (a few seconds) into the heart of the chemical reaction. The system is designed to ensure that all the specified quantity reaches the reaction medium. To confirm that the function performs as expected, De Dietrich Process Systems, is able to carry out tests on its test bench, with the exception of those involving certain toxic or dangerous products. Thanks to its compact design, the Multiprobe is suitable for installation in either small or large reaction units and can fit easily into a congested peripheral environment. To perform all these functions, the system uses only one reactor nozzle. It also includes an exclusive cleaning function which rinses the entire sampling circuit with a suitable solvent.

he recently released software update for the IDS NXT platform provides users of the all-in-one AI solution IDS NXT ocean with many new features. It extends the system’s AI capabilities to include object detection, offers turnkey solutions with vision apps and, with a new development environment, ensures that users can program their own image processing tasks and execute them as vision apps on their cameras. Using OPC UA, AI-based image processing can also be integrated directly into factory automation without writing a single line of code. The update is free and can be used with all IDS NXT cameras.
Another major improvement is the integration of the industry-standard protocol OPC UA. IDS NXT cameras can now communicate with machines and controllers in the same language and exchange tasks or results directly. The use of this key technology enables the integration of intelligent cameras into factory automation without additional hardware or programming effort. Standardised communication via OPC UA also creates the prerequisite for the “plug and produce” of new devices. The setup time of machine vision systems can thus be reduced to a minimum.
MORE INFORMATION
IDS NXT ocean makes image processing with artificial intelligence as simple as possible. Users without deep learning or programming skills are supported by precisely coordinated workflows and tools. They can now use the new vision apps “Classifier” and “Object Detector”, for example, to classify image components or identify specific objects based on artificial intelligence with their cameras. The vision app concept also ensures that users can assign image processing tasks to the cameras as desired. The range of applications is practically unlimited and includes everything from simple barcode reading to complex AI analyses.
For this purpose IDS provides the new development environment “IDS NXT Vision App Creator”. Developers and AI specialists can now dive even deeper into the system, create individual vision apps and adjust IDS NXT cameras even more effectively to their needs. This also allows the combination of classifications or object recognition with the classic image processing, such as measurement tasks, to be realised in one device.

EMERSON INTRODUCES ADVANCED REDUNDANT CONTROL SYSTEM (ARCS) FOR INCREASED OPERATIONAL CERTAINTY IN EMERGENCY SHUT DOWN SITUATIONS
ARCS is the only safety system in the industry with individual valve isolation for online maintenance without process interruption.
E
merson has released its ASCO 141 Series Advanced Redundant Control System (ARCS) to provide a redundant solution for a variety of emergency shutdown valve applications, such as those found in the chemical, power, oil and gas industries. Available globally, it includes various redundant solenoid configurations to enhance the reliability of the process and meet specific safety or reliability requirements in automation processes. The single inlet/single outlet design provides a streamlined installation process compared to traditional bypass systems, while almost eliminating potential failure points.
The ASCO 141 series ARCS is designed for use as a component in safety instrumented systems. utilise 1oo2, 2oo2 or 2oo3 voting solenoids to enhance the reliability of the circuit, it functions as a redundant pneumatics tripping device to control the pilot air signal to a process valve actuator. The ARCS features either two or four electrically actuated solenoid valves, visual indicators and a manually controlled bypass or isolation valve. The unique control functionality allows for maintenance of the solenoid valves without having to shut down the process valve. In fact, the use of the maintenance bypass or isolation valve is not required for functional testing of the ARCS unit — a downtime-reducing feature not possible with common bypass functions.
MORE INFORMATION
“By addressing the concerns common with typical bypass systems — particularly those in critical or emergency shutdown applications — our ASCO 141 series ARCS provides a reliable, time-saving alternative,” said vice president of global marketing for Emerson’s industrial automation business, Erik VanLaningham. “Although the use of a common bypass is a typical solution, the end user doesn’t know if they’ll be able to shut down on demand in the event of an emergency because their redundant system is in bypass mode. This is where our unique ARCS value 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

proposition comes in. The ARCS individual valve isolation option provides increased safety and operational availability during online maintenance to help customers achieve their required SIL rating.” With just a single part number, the ASCO 141 series ARCS features several advances that simplify specification, installation and operation. Supplied as a fully integrated, comprehensive solution using a manifold instead of individual valves, ARCS comes pre-tested from the factory and ready to install. The direct valve-to-valve design eliminates pipework and fittings between the solenoid valves and minimises leak points for increased reliability and a lower total cost of ownership. A status indicator with feedback helps facilitate preventive maintenance while providing online fault detection. It provides digital input feedback (via pressure switches or Emerson-exclusive GO Switch options) to the control room. And for additional peace of mind, the ASCO 327 series 3/2-way direct acting solenoid valves included on the ARCS manifold are certified to SIL 3 capable (exida) standards. MORE INFORMATION

INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY, REDUCE WASTE
In addition to the demands on productivity, high expectations of consumers and retailers weigh on food manufacturers and processors. They expect not only safe and qualitatively perfect foodstuffs. High requirements of consumers and retail chains In addition to the demands on productivity, high expectations of consumers and retailers weigh on food manufacturers and processors. They expect not only safe and qualitatively perfect foodstuffs.

In addition to adhering to legal regulations, they increasingly require additional certifications from their suppliers. To simultaneously comply with the legal requirements, meet the standards of the retail chains and satisfy the expectations of the consumers, functioning automation technology is essential for food manufacturers and processors. This means: They need intelligent technologies and services to allow them to meet the high standards with regard to food safety as efficiently as possible, in compliance with guidelines and while making the most efficient use of resources.
The objective and philosophy of Sesotec, a leading manufacturer of product inspection and material sorting systems in SchĂśnberg, Bavaria, is to support the foodproducing industry in the profitable manufacture of safe food and to create less waste in the process. To do this, the company offers appropriate application solutions for all process levels, products and conveying types as well as for all critical control points of the production process. In the area of materials handling, various sensors from Leuze that have proven themselves over the years are in use at the foreign object detection systems. Currently in test operation at Sesotec is the DRTÂ 25C switching sensor from Leuze with a completely new operating principle based on Contrast Adaptive Technology (CAT). This sensor is ideal for complex, customer-specific applications that cannot be solved with a standard detection method. The customer is king Consumers demand not only long shelf lives but also constant availability of the entire selection. Moreover, the food should be of high quality and free of any contaminants or foreign objects. Consumers also increasingly want to know the source of their products: where, with what

ingredients and how they were produced. At the same time, calls for food that is free of gluten and allergens and is completely vegetarian or vegan are also increasing. Food demand is thereby becoming significantly more specialized. This results not only in an additional challenge but also in increased costs for the production process. Producing the required quantities of food requires an increasingly automated process chain. And not only consumers but retailers are also placing high demands on the food manufacturers and processors. In addition to product quality, other topics include transparent traceability as well as fast reaction paths in the event of any recall actions. On top of this are increased requirements on logistics systems and supply chains.
To detect metal contaminants – such as from wires or shavings – metal detectors like those manufactured by Sesotec can be used. For the detection of contaminants from non-metallic materials, e.g., glass or plastics, Sesotec offers X-ray systems. In his function as R&D director, Sammer has already been working together with Leuze for many years. Always with the goal of solving the sometimes tricky applications of his customers even better and more efficiently. For reliable detection as well as proper labeling or assignment, optical technologies from Leuze are used here. They ensure that exactly what is on the label is actually in the package. Minimise waste together Sesotec is very pleased with the used Leuze sensors, which have been installed standard in the machines and systems for years. In the area of metal detection, these are primarily sensors from Leuze’s 25 series. Sesotec customers in the food industry confirm their reliable function, cost effectiveness and long service life in an environment that is subject to the highest hygiene requirements and regular cleaning cycles.

Precise technologies ensure efficient processes The food industry has become a complex, globally networked system with many participants: raw materials are purchased internationally at various price and quality levels. They are often sold, stored and processed far from where they were originally produced. Increasing food transports, longer transport paths and multiple loading processes result in a growing risk of contamination. “Manufacturers need precise technologies to comply with the legal standards regarding food safety,” explains Hermann Sammer, Director of R&D at Sesotec. However, an increasing degree of automation means less personnel and fewer inspections by employees in the production chain. The risk of any foreign
objects present in the food not being detected thereby increases.
Nevertheless, Sesotec is always open to new ideas and technologies. One such example of this is the recent test operation of a completely new Leuze sensor, the DRT 25C with a fully new operating principle based on Contrast 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

Adaptive Technology (CAT). “Our company philosophy is very closely aligned with that of Leuze. We don’t view ourselves as a standard supplier of individual metal detectors. We are instead focused on offering our customers specific, complete solutions that are tailored to their respective application and requirements. And these consist not only of our own components. Also included here is all of the sensor technology. Only in this way are we able to help our customers increase the cost effectiveness of these solutions in spite of the additional costs that arise though a mechanical product inspection,” explains Sammer. Brigitte Rothkopf, Director Corporate Communication at Sesotec, emphasises: “As important as cost effectiveness is, so too is making a positive contribution to the minimization of food waste. After all, this is not only an ethical problem for us, but an economical one as well.” Since 2019, Sesotec is a founding member of the“SAVE FOOD”initiative and is actively involved in preventing food waste and loss around the world. This is a joint initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), of the environmental program of the United Nations (UNEP), of Messe Düsseldorf and of Interpack, the world’s leading trade fair for packaging and processes.

New on the start line: the DRT 25C from Leuze Leuze’s new DRT 25C switching sensor promises to reliably detect every type of object and type of product packaging such as are examined in the food sector with Sesotec metal detectors and checked for contamination. Fully independent of their color, shape and surface structure. Regardless of whether flat, glossy, with openings or transparent. “Such objects are not so easy to detect using conventional sensors, which scan from the side. Above all because the front edge of packaged products cannot always be reliably detected,” explains Andreas Eberle, Key Account Manager Packaging at Leuze. Hermann Sammer from Sesotec adds: “The problem often manifests itself in the form of multiple triggering – especially at high conveyor speeds.” He has had this experience above all with irregular shapes as occur, e.g., with fish and meat. This usually involves individual pieces that do not have the exact same length and shape. The same holds for outer plastic packaging of fruit or vegetables.
28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021
42
Sesotec is currently putting the DRT 25C through its paces in the company’s technical centre. A wide range of objects and packaging are being used here. The objects travel into the metal detector on the conveyor belt. Prior to entry into the metal detector, they are always detected by the DRT 25C at the front edge and over the entire product length – all from above. “The view from above is a big advantage. Irregular shapes can thereby be significantly better detected. The sensor solutions currently on the market have so far only been able to perform this task to a limited extent,” confirms Sammer. Test experiences thus far are very positive. Even in difficult work environments, such as with quickly moving and, in some cases, strongly vibrating conveyor belts. Positive test results for complex applications The DRT 25C shows it strengths exactly where conventional sensors, which scan from the side, are pushed to their limits. In the test environment at Sesotec, no effort is being spared to test the DRT 25C under “real” application conditions in detail: “After all, it needs to function properly afterwards in our customers’ application environments and be free of any malfunctions that would slow a machine or system or, worse, bring it to a standstill,” explains Michael Maier, developer in the product inspection department at Sesotec. As a result, Sesotec intentionally wets, soils or gums up conveyor belts in the test situation as is often the case in actual use, e.g., due to stuck labels or chocolate residues. “From these test results, we deduce possible product improvements or further developments,” says Michael Schafferhans, Technical Sales Consultant at Leuze. “This allows us to determine where we need to readjust and improve further,” he adds. Leuze takes this feedback from customers and partners very seriously and is actively working on additional sensors based on the CAT technology. After all, it always comes down to providing the customer with the best possible support with his application and making him even more successful. This is the goal and aspiration of the Sensor People. Contrast Adaptive Teach increases the throughput “The DRT 25C is based on a completely new technology: the Contrast Adaptive Teach Technology (CAT),” explains Eberle. The basic idea is simple: The object can change at any time. The DRT 25C therefore works with an object’s environment

object is changed, as the sensor operates together with the conveyor belt as a reference. The all-rounder sensor The DRT 25C dynamic reference diffuse sensor from Leuze is based on the intelligent CAT technology and represents a new operating principle. It thereby sets new technological standards on the market and is another milestone in the innovation history of Leuze. as a constant reference surface instead of with the object itself. In packaging systems, this is the conveyor belt. This serves as a teachable reference. Once the sensor has been taught the contrast information of the conveyor belt, it only needs to be intelligent enough to adapt this knowledge to a possible change of environment. This is precisely what CAT technology does. With this reference technology, Leuze has created a new operating principle in the field of switching sensors. The DRT 25C learns the signal parameters of the conveyor belt at the press of a button and stores them as the “standard zero”. Every object that is transported on the conveyor belt now generates a signal. If this deviates from the zero state, the DRT 25C reliably detects the object as a “deviation from the reference”. The performance of the device is optimised through the choice of teach level. There is, for example, a teach routine for conveyor belts that become heavily soiled over time. Another teach level exists especially for the detection of very flat or even transparent objects. Once the sensor has been “taught”, no additional settings or readjustments are necessary. POSITIONERS WITH IO-LINK CONNECTION
For the first time, the intelligent positioners Type 8694 and Type 8791 are also available with an IOLink interface. Bürkert Fluid Control Systems is the first supplier to offer its customers simple and, at the same time, intelligent networking of control valves at field level. Operating and diagnostic data is therefore always available at process control level and can be utilised for preventive maintenance.
C
ontrol valves with positioners are indispensable in the process industry. They are used to control process or auxiliary media, for example during fermentation, separation, filling or cleaning in place (CIP). The positioners Type 8694 (Image) and Type 8791 from Bürkert Fluid Control Systems (see company box) with digital communication IOLink can now replace analogue pneumatic valve controllers and offer users great added value. As first positioners with digital communication IO-Link for control valves on the market, they can easily be integrated into standard fieldbus and automation systems with less wiring effort, for instance for accurate control tasks in pharma, biotechnology and food and beverage industries.
The collected wear parameters, such as travelled valve stroke distance or positioning speed, can also be used to plan maintenance dates in advance and provide the necessary spare parts. This allows for more flexible maintenance planning for a better availability and production.
MORE INFORMATION
Diagnostic data enables optimised quality assurance and preventive maintenance. In addition, parametrisation via IO-Link is enabled. PLC I/O cards for analogue signals are no longer necessary, installation becomes simpler and process reliability increases. In addition to ELEMENT control valve systems and valves with linear and rotary actuators in accordance with IEC534-6 or VDI / VDE 3845, the new IOLink positioners can also digitally connect hygienic process control valves.
Safe, reliable and easy to maintain Reliability and safety are top priorities for control valves in the process industry. The new digital concept offers numerous advantages in this field: On the one hand, it allows fast data exchange from field to process control level, thereby providing exact information on the plant status at all levels. On the other hand, parameterisation can be done either remotely or directly on the device itself on site if required. The current operating status of the positioner and the control valve can be retrieved via the process control system. Thus, in an event of any malfunctions, possible causes and the urgency of repair work can also be clarified remotely by utilise diagnostic data. Additionally, this effectively supports asset management. Specific device data such as device ID and parameters are centrally stored in the plant to enable automated reparameterisation in an event of device replacement or servicing.

DYNEO+ FROM NIDEC LEROY-SOMER SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF THE INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION PROCESS
Nidec Leroy-Somer, the world specialist with a wealth of experience in drive solutions for industrial refrigeration, has for more than 40 years provided refrigeration professionals with its motors and speed drives for improved productivity. Its latest development, the Dyneo+ range of IE5 synchronous reluctance permanent magnet (PM) motors, with rare earth free rotor, offers multiple advantages for driving screw compressors, piston compressors, circulation pumps and condensers, be it in terms of energy efficiency, performances or reliability.
C
ompanies that use industrial refrigeration equipment have long been aware of the impact that the power consumption of a refrigeration installation can have both on energy bills and on the environment. The cold compressor, at the heart of the system, remains the most energy-hungry element, and can represent up to 80% of total power consumption. Electric motors, which are ubiquitous in the cold chain, constitute the main source of potential energy savings.
MORE INFORMATION
Thanks to its expertise in the design and manufacture of industrial drive systems, Nidec Leroy-Somer offers a wide range of drive solutions at fixed or variable speed, providing significant energy savings on the refrigeration market. In addition to these complete and well-established ranges for this sector, Nidec Leroy-Somer has just launched its new Dyneo+ synchronous reluctance PM motor, ranging from 11 to 500Â kW, for speeds of up to 4500Â rpm. Specially designed for variable speed, this motor offers an economic 28 | Industry EMEA | January 2021

and ecological solution for the requirements of industrial refrigeration. To address the energy transition challenges, the European Parliament recently voted, on 8 October 2020, in favour of a new ambitious climate law targeting 60% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and climate neutrality by 2040. As part of this approach, the latest Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781, applicable to electric motors and variable speed drives, defines and schedules increasingly stringent efficiency levels for machines sold on the European market. Every industry - and in particular the most energyintensive ones - is affected by these developments, designed to help protect the environment, not least considering that the cost of electricity is likely to climb significantly in the years to come. With its IE5 Ultra-Premium efficiency level, Dyneo+ has all it takes to rise to this energy challenge, offering as it does substantive energy savings in real conditions of
use over the course of the cycle, at variable speed and load, as is typical with industrial refrigeration, where needs fluctuate considerably according to season and production level. Thanks to its energy performance, the Dyneo+ solution makes it possible to significantly increase the COP (“Coefficient of Performance”, expressed by the ratio between refrigeration capacity produced and power consumption) of a refrigeration unit. As well as helping to reduce the carbon footprint, the range offers a TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) among the lowest on the market, and for rapid return on investment, generally in less than one year. Dyneo+ motors are designed to operate exclusively with a variable frequency drive, allowing them to adapt to the speed of the machine being run and improve its performance when operating in overspeed. This provides the benefit of additional refrigeration capacity for a given device, thereby avoiding having to start up another compressor during a production peak. Moreover, the Dyneo+ solution enables optimisation of the number of compressors for a given installation. Delivering precise speed and torque control in sensorless mode, it guarantees constant torque over extensive speed ranges, with no derating or forced ventilation.
Dyneo+ is connected to the Systemiz interactive application, which provides a wide variety of digital services, including instantaneous access to all the product literature, and easy and intuitive drive setup by simply scanning the QR code on the nameplate. With its “Made in Europe” and low carbon footprint credentials, the Dyneo+ motor is eligible for Energy Savings Certificates, also known as White Certificates, generating government aid through the energy savings made. This makes for easy financing, meaning considerably faster return on investment, on top of the accrued energy savings Environmental compliance, energy performance and topnotch reliability: Dyneo+ motor represents a drive solution that is perfectly suited to the optimised productivity needs of industrial refrigeration.
MORE INFORMATION
Nidec Leroy-Somer has developed the Dyneo+ range based on the mechanical platform of its IMfinity® induction motors, known for their robustness and reliability. The use of proven components makes these new motors extremely robust and long-lived by design, thereby limiting the risk of refrigeration system failure. What is more, Dyneo+ has been designed for ease of installation, simple setup and easy
maintenance. Generating low rotor losses, the magnetic synchronous reluctance technology reduces maintenance costs, in particular by extending the lubrication intervals. Whether compact or IEC interchangeable, with aluminium or cast-iron housing, or in IP55 or IP23 version, these motors are as easy to fit in new machines as they are to retrofit in existing installations as part of an energy optimisation project.

ith the introduction of the GSX, the world’s first combined fork sensor, Leuze is continuing its decades-long tradition as an innovator. Leuze invented not only the first label fork sensor with the GS05, but also developed the first ultrasonic fork sensor with the GSU14. With the company’s latest innovation, the GSX (various models available), Leuze has expanded its fork sensor product range by adding a combined model that can do both: light and ultrasonic. It combines the advantages of the optical variants with those of the ultrasonic solutions, and it is best suited for labeling machines used in the packaging industry. With this innovation, Leuze is once again demonstrating their many years of expertise and the application know-how of the Sensor People in this field.
Leuze expands its fork sensor product range Affixing labels of various shapes, sizes, and materials on products and packaging by means of a labeling machine is one of the fundamental tasks carried out in the packaging industry. For its precise positioning, the label must be safely and reliably detected – even at high conveyor speeds. This task is performed by fork sensors, which house the transmitter and receiver in a single device and ensure high operational safety. These devices are not only very sensitive, they are also easy to mount and do not require any alignment. Until now, Leuze offered two fork sensor models for this purpose: light and ultrasonic. A new version that combines light and ultrasonic is now available.

Always security in mind “The automation industry needs partners that can provide technology and services which protect the users’ most valuable assets,” says Timo Van’t Hoff, CPO of HMS. “When companies work with HMS, they can rest assured that we always have security in mind, and that security is continually addressed in our daily work” The new certification was independently performed by TÜV Rheinland, and the IEC62443-4-1 certificate is adding to an expanding list of acknowledgments for HMS’ success in helping customers strengthen their cybersecurity within the area of industrial automation and control systems.

NEW IDS DEVELOPMENT SITE IN SERBIA
Industrial camera manufacturer invests in new technologies and expands its team of experts in artificial intelligence.
S
ince July 2020, IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH has been represented in Serbia with its own subsidiary. Based in Novi Sad, Serbia’s secondlargest city and considered the country’s technological centre, the pure development unit is closely linked to the Faculty of Technical Sciences of the local university. The leading manufacturer of digital industrial cameras is thus intensifying its cooperation with science and research – especially in the field of artificial intelligence.
In addition to the new subsidiary in Serbia, IDS already has its own branches in the USA, Japan, South Korea and Great Britain, as well as two sales offices in France and the Netherlands.
MORE INFORMATION
“We are a company with a strong focus on development and are constantly coming up with new products and new technologies. In order to gain access to these new technologies, contact with science is particularly important. This is where we get the knowledge for our innovative products,” Jürgen Hartmann, founder and owner of IDS, explains the step.
The company’s investment in the branch demonstrates the strategic importance of IDS in addressing the topic of artificial intelligence. “The topic of artificial intelligence will change our market in the long term,” says IDS Managing Director Jan Hartmann. Together with Alexander Lewinsky, he is also the Managing Director of the new IDS Imaging Development Systems Serbia d.o.o. Professor Rastislav Struharik is responsible for the management on site. His team consists of specialists from the corresponding faculty of the University of Novi Sad. This is the first foreign development site for IDS. It paves the way for even more active AI research and development. After all, “cameras and artificial intelligence are a combination that allows IDS to reinvent itself and contribute to shaping the future”, continues Jan Hartmann.

IXXAT CANNECTOR – THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE FOR CAN
HMS Networks now introduces Ixxat® CANnector, a flexible solution for logging, bridging and extending CAN networks. Complementing the existing CAN@net NT and CANbridge NT series, CANnector offers additional interfaces and functions, as well as data logging functionality. Since it is compatible with CAN@ net NT and CANbridge NT, CANnector enables easy expansion of existing installations. A flexible all-rounder – logger, bridge and range extender Like CAN@net and CANbridge NT, CANnector is a standalone device, which means that no PC is needed. In addition to a generic CANnector, three preconfigured versions are offered:
CANnector Range – For simple CAN(FD) range extension via Ethernet or as a CAN interface connected to the PC via Ethernet. CANnector Bridge – CAN(FD) bridge/gateway, frame or signal based and with functions, like e.g. online floatingpoint data manipulation for all bus systems. CANnector Log – Data logger with trigger and ring buffer as well as low-power sleep mode with wake-up on CAN(FD), for logging frame or signal based CAN(FD) data.
MORE INFORMATION
After unpacking and connecting, all three versions can be used directly. As the base hardware is the same, and the different functions of CANnector are provided by loadable configurations, all CANnectors can be reconfigured to include the functionality of choice.

Performant and versatile A powerful Linux platform allows CANnector to execute complex applications and data manipulations directly on the device. The support of bus description files also enables operation on signal level. By using “Wake-up on CAN” and the possibility to switch off the TX function on the CAN buses, the device can be used in applications which are sensitive to power and safety. CANnector is available in different hardware versions, which differ only in the number of supported interfaces. The maximum number of interfaces is eight CAN(FD), two LIN, two Digital IO and one EtherCAT slave interface as well as Ethernet and USB. The EtherCAT slave interface is implemented using an Anybus® CompactCom technology from HMS, allowing future support of other industrial Ethernet protocols as well. USB extensions like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are available as an option.
All functions can be executed in parallel on the CANnector device, so that e.g. logging of data can be executed in parallel to CAN(FD) bridging and data visualization on mobile devices. Easy configuration via drag & drop HMS provides a free Windows tool which enables easy configuration of CANnector, in which the “connections” between source and target are established using a Drag and Drop concept. CAN(FD) bus descriptions can optionally be imported for configuration. The standard range of functions can be extended using the integrated development and debug environment and own C-user code or Matlab/ Simulink models, which can be executed directly on the device. www.ixxat.com MORE INFORMATION
Cloud and PLC connection Ixxat CANnector offers numerous additional functions which enable for example live data visualization and simulation using mobile devices (smartphone or tablet) via Wi-Fi, or cloud connectivity via OPC-UA, MQTT or via HMS Hub – HMS’ own solution for industrial data connectivity.
Using the EtherCAT slave interface, CANnector enables a direct connection of CAN(FD)-based networks to industrial Ethernet networks or a PLC.
