FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR “
A WORD FROM OUR MANAGING DIRECTOR...
Welcome to the 3rd Frankfurt Book Fair issue of the IPR Rights Magazine. After launching back in 2013 the magazine has undergone some big changes. It has grown both in size and stature to become an integral link in the rights and licensing chain for our members and their key titles. In many ways this evolution also reflects some of the huge strides made by IPR License itself. We’re delighted to attend this year’s fair as an important strategic partner of Frankfurt Book Fair. This relationship has been widely reported on and, whilst it’s still early days, it is clear that the vision we have for the future of the rights and licensing marketplace is very much aligned. The Frankfurt Book Fair remains by far the largest and most important rights and licensing event in the publishing calendar. But thanks to our fully transactional rights and licensing marketplace, TradeRights, we can also now help ensure that rights buyers and sellers have access to millions of international book and journal rights 24/7, 365 days a year. As ever Frankfurt will prove to be exciting, enlightening and exhausting in equal measure. Our team will be out in full force throughout the week at Hall 6.2 Stand D37, so please stop by and ask us about how we can help boost your rights and licensing business. We look forward to seeing you.
- Tom Chalmers

...AND FROM OUR EDITOR
It’s that time of year again when publishers from all over come together to renew professional relationships, socialize, and most importantly, generate licensing deals. Here at IPR, the ‘licensing time of year’ never stops! With over 14 million titles on the platform, publishers can trade book rights all year round. As you can see from this issue, we have welcomed on board STM publisher BMJ (page 12) who represent an essential area we already specialise in, alongside Wolters Kluwer (page 18), Elsevier and SAGE to name a few. There has also been an influx of new trade publishers joining as members this month, as you can see from the New Members Showcase (page 8). With all new titles added to the platform, we have narrowed down and highlighted a few of the best at the back of the magazine from page 37. For our full range of titles and members, visit iprlicense.com. Focusing on licensing trends, our Transactions Manager Stacey Riley has compiled a report on 2015’s top common trends we are seeing from the TradeRights marketplace (page 24). We also have special focus on Indonesia, FBF’s 2015 Guest Country of Honour, with a supplement on page 52 and a Global Rights Report on page 15. As always, we hope you enjoy the book fair and hope to see you at our stand. (And don’t miss our stand drinks on Thursday at 5.30pm - Hall 6.2, D37). - Libby Whitehouse

TRADERIGHTS:
TRADERIGHTS: THE EVOLUTION In 2012 IPR License began developing a global rights licensing solution. An integral component in this was the creation of bespoke transactional technology and one of the world’s largest rights holder databases. After further investment by the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) and in partnership with the established market expertise of the Copyright Clearance Centre (CCC), this has now turned into IPR’s flagship product, TradeRights. TradeRights has emerged as a onestop rights marketplace for a range of publishers to generate additional rights and licensing revenue on a global scale.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
A
fter the success of the recent Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) we are excited to be in talks with a large number of Chinese publishers who are looking to buy and sell rights on a global scale. From our visits to BIBF in recent years it’s become increasingly clear that China is a forward-looking country, and there are many conversations happening in the background on collective and varying forms of licensing. With a flourishing technology sector, China is in a great place to take a lead in publishing innovation. So while the shortterm shock of the stock market fall may be dominating recent headlines, in the medium term, and specifically in publishing, China is going to play a key role for many years to come. With this in mind we will be working closer than ever with a variety of Chinese publishers over the coming months to develop a proposition which will enable us to deliver real value to them and their authors on an on-going basis. And it’s not just in China in which we are looking to expand our offering. We are continually signing up members from all over the world and seeing more deals being done with rapidly increasing regularity.
And we’ve recently extended our reach in the STM marketplace through the announcement of a partnership with BMJ. FURTHER INCREASE IN STM MEMBERS It’s a real positive to see even more high profile names in the STM field realising the benefits attached to our TradeRights marketplace. This particular community has long realised the importance of licensing their works and have been quick to grasp the concept of automating parts of these transactions whilst broadening their international reach. We look forward to working closely with BMJ to help create even more opportunities for them to enhance their rights and licensing business on a global scale. Looking at general market conditions, activity within the international rights and licensing marketplace continues to generate huge revenues for publishers of all sizes and across all sectors. And it’s encouraging to see even more forward-

thinking publishing houses better utilising technological solutions to acquire rights and improve transactional efficiencies. PARTNERSHIPS In addition, rights sellers are in a stronger position than ever to increase their support and contact networks to bolster valuable revenue streams from front and back list titles. Thanks to our strategic partnerships with FBF and CCC, the TradeRights marketplace continues to go from strength to strength. And we are constantly enhancing our technology and global reach to make it even simpler for international publishers to best monetise all their content and break into new markets. NEW STAFF The FBF element of the partnership has been further enhanced with the announcement of Amy Webster joining the FBF team as Associate Partner Rights and Licences. One of her main duties will be in supporting the partnership between
the Book Fair and IPR License. Amy joined FBF from the Edinburgh TV Festival, where she was Head of New Business. She was previously at the London Book Fair, where she co-ordinated the Market Focus Programme for six years. Commenting on her new appointment, she said: “Having worked with both publishers and rights-holders over the years, I know that rights revenue has never been more important to the success of a publisher and therefore the industry as a whole. As book fairs continue to thrive and rights professionals continue to travel, this initiative will leverage the strengths of the content available and the international reach of the Frankfurt Book Fair.” Thomas Minkus, VP Emerging Media and English Language World at the Frankfurt Book Fair, said: “We are delighted that Amy will be working with us on this important project. Rights and licences are of course a key area of the Book Fair’s business, and we think Amy is very well-placed to help us expand our reach even further.” From our perspective Amy is already
providing a vital link between the various arms of the companies to help further establish TradeRights as the industry standard rights licensing marketplace. LICENSING MADE SIMPLE In addition we’re also in the midst of putting together a Licensing Made Simple campaign. The main aim behind this is to help educate and broaden the rights horizon for many different types of publisher. The fact remains that many publishers, large and small, either don’t fully understand or are able to maximise the sometimes complex world of book rights. As such the aim of this campaign is to bring some much needed transparency to this process so that all international publishers can get a better grasp of this potentially lucrative market and maximise opportunities across many different territories. And this will form the basis of many conversations here at the fair itself and ultimately help influence the decision making process of many publishers from all over the globe.

Explosive Calisthenics is the book all diehard Convict Conditioning fans have been waiting for. There has never been anything like it until now!
“Explosive Calisthenics is the best program for developing power and skilled movement I have seen. Do yourself a favor and get this amazing work. This book will be the gold standard for developing bodyweight power, skill, and agility.” —CHRIS HARDY, D.O. MPH, CSCS, author, Strong Medicine
“Martial arts supremacy is all about explosive power and speed, and you will possess both once you’ve mastered the hardcore exercises in Explosive Calisthenics.” —LOREN W. CHRISTENSEN, author, Fighting Power: How to Develop Explosive Punches, Kicks, Blocks, And Grappling
“Explosive Calisthenics is a masterfully constructed roadmap for the attainment of power, functional speed, and agility. ” —PATRICK ROTH, M.D., author of The End of Back Pain: Access Your Hidden Core to Heal Your Body “Explosive Calisthenics is an absolute Treasure Map for anybody looking to tear down their body's athletic limitations. Paul makes you want to put down the barbells, learn and practice these step-by-step progressions to mastering the most explosive and impressive bodyweight movements. The best part is? You can become an absolute Beast in under an hour of practice a week.” —JOE DISTEFANO, Spartan Race, Director of Training & Creator of the Spartan SGX Certification
With his trademark blend of old-school philosophy, hard-earned wisdom and in-your-face humor, Coach expands his infamous system of progressive bodyweight programming to break down the most coveted explosive moves, including the back flip, kip-up and muscle-up. If you want to know how far you can go training with just your own bodyweight, you owe it to yourself to get this book!” —AL KAVADLO, author, Stretching Your Boundaries “Explosive Calisthenics is aptly-named. This book is a power-boosting ‘smart-bomb’ that delivers a payload of immensely practical info. The content is not only interesting and unique, it practically screams at you to try it out. You will love the skills and their associated progressions. For multi-sport athletes, prospective parkour-enthusiasts, budding badasses and aspiring ninja warriors everywhere, here is your textbook!” —MIKE GILLETTE, author, Rings of Power
“I can’t believe we abandoned traditional calisthenics in our schools and training programs, but this book is the best argument I know for carrying signs in front of schools proclaiming ‘No More Dodgeball’ and ‘Calisthenics Progressions for All!’” —DAN JOHN, author, Never Let Go
“Explosive Calisthenics continues the epic saga of the Convict Conditioning opus, which has become a staple for any bodyweight training library. If you've applied all the incredible techniques taught in the first two books, you'll be able to maximize your training with even more impressive moves. Coach Wade offers up a blueprint for pushing your workouts to a whole new level. Lots of books say they are taking things to a whole new level—this one really does. ” —MIKE FITCH, creator, Global Bodyweight Training
“I have found in my work with world-class athletes that they have a common skill; the ability to generate explosive power. Paul Wade's new book shows you not only how to generate explosive power, but how to direct and control it as well. If you have ever wanted to join the rank of superhuman, this book gives you the road map of how to get there. The progressions allow anyone to master the skills of the athletic elite. Get this book and become amazing!” —JON BRUNEY, author, Neuro-Mass
“Your body is the ultimate ‘training tool’. Paul Wade shows you how to transform your own body and turn it into a weapon! I've taken these methods and applied them to the training of my athletes as well as my own training and the bottom line is that they work. If you are done wasting your time on fads and gimmicks and simply want a training program that works BIG time. This is it.” —ZACH EVEN-ESH, author The Encyclopedia of Underground Strength and Conditioning
“Once again, Paul ‘Coach’ Wade, inspires with a life-changing approach to fitness that relies only on the weight of one's body. In his comprehensive new book, Explosive Calisthenics, he presents how calisthenics can and should be taken to the next level. Relying on no one else or any apparatus other than your own body for core training is what truly separates the master from the student. Wade's discussion of this ageless wisdom is magnificent to see and is to me the heart and soul of Explosive Calisthenics.” —STEPHAN BERWICK, author True Strength Yang

Over the past year IPR License have been working closely with the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, and FBF, to help promote the work of Indonesian publishing houses and authors. And it’s been fascinating to speak to a variety of publishers and get some insight into their marketplace. So what does this look like? Well, thanks to information collated by Frankfurt Book Fair, and Wanda S. Brata, CEO at Gramedia, here are some vital statistics which we hope will be of interest.

The turnover in 2013 was suggested to be around 48.1 million euro, which represented a strong rise of 16.7% when compared to 2012 figures. 1,317 publishers are reported to be registered with IKAPI (Indonesian Publishers Association), of these about 1,200 are considered to be active publishers.
“
Children’s books make up 23% of total sales value” Each year roughly 40,000 titles are produced. The categories said to be most in-demand are children’s books, textbooks and those on fiction, religion and literature. To highlight its importance the children’s book sector was said to have
Indonesian literature has a grand tradition of oral storytelling, an expressive tradition of poetry, and also has great prose literature in its repertoire. One of the most well-known Indonesian authors is Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1925-2006). He was awarded the PEN Freedom Award and published more than 30 works, which were translated into at least 20 languages. Pramoedya Ananta Toer was also high on the list of the candidates for the Nobel Prize for Literature. The generation of young authors for example is represented by Ayu Utami, whose novel Saman was published with Horlemann Verlag in 2007. Another new star on the horizon is Andrea Hirata whose novel Rainbow Troops was published at Hanser Berlin in 2013 and who was awarded the ITB Book Award at the International Tourism Exhibition in Berlin, where Indonesia was the partner country.
TRANSLATIONS AND LICENSING Of the active publishing houses in Indonesia, more than 260 of their publications have been translated into the English language. Currently only a small amount of content is translated from

RIGHTS LIST
More than 40% of all books in Indonesia are translated from abroad, this makes Indonesia the biggest rights buyer in South East Asia. Book rights from English, Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Japanese are mostly welcomed. The Asian culture has had a notable influence on Indonesia, manga from Japan, popculture of South Korea brought by Hallyu (Korean Wave) are all the market’s focus.

NON-FICTION e-books, not least because of the omnipresent piracy challenge. However, with a growing middle class and education becoming more and more important, Indonesia’s youth are now very digitally minded. This is illustrated by the fact that is has the third largest Facebook and Twitter communities worldwide.
THE FUTURE Historically, Indonesia’s publishing and bookselling sector has not really been the subject of much government intervention. However, with Indonesia as the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2015, this is slowly changing. The sector is now gaining in importance in terms of the country’s cultural policy, and the use of content is undergoing dynamic development. There remain many challenges to face including piracy; low levels of distribution and translations of Indonesian content into other languages, especially Western languages but it’s clear that Indonesia has a wealth of writing talent and the potential be a real force within the global publishing arena. an you explain the concept behind Simply Charly?
In and engaging and simple manner, Simply Charly (SimplyCharly.com), offers teachers, students and other interested parties an original one-stop portal to a wealth of information about each individual we present, such as an easy-to-read biography highlighting each personality’s main achievements and challenges; our own, exclusive interviews with world-renowned scholars, authors, and other experts who offer their unique insight into the sometimes controversial but always fascinating lives and works of history’s most distinguished movers and shakers; a platform allowing our visitors to ask questions about each historic figure – and have them answered by our panel of eminent experts; pertinent book reviews, videos and podcasts, etc. This way, rather than seek out a disparate collection of links, we want our visitors to come to just one reliable and credible source – our website. Your approach to learning is based on “The Great Man (or Woman) Theory.” Can you expand on this?
IPR License can now proudly introduce one of our newest budding publisher members, Simply Charly. Their mission is to become the leading online source for everything readers want to know about the groundbreaking individuals they feature. They publish books on some of history’s most important figures for the general and college educated market. We asked musician, entreprenuer and founder Charles Carlini to delve into why this new brand of historical biographies could make history.
Our approach to learning is based on “The Great Man (or Woman) Theory,” a notion spawned in the 19th century by Thomas Carlyle, a Scottish historian, philosopher and author. This theory states that we learn about the world through the achievements of people who made a significant impact on the lives of their contemporaries and generations that followed them. The late Steve Jobs used this approach when he returned to Apple and created an ad campaign that likened his company

sometimes controversial, but always fascinating lives Who are the great men and women of history? It is impossible to list all the geniuses and brilliant minds whose accomplishments have influenced and inspired their and our generation. Our site is dedicated to about 100 famous people (and counting) who had made major contributions to their fields of arts and humanities; sciences; philosophy, economics; politics; architecture, and others.
Among them are writers Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, Anton Chekov, Charles Dickens, and many others. Immanuel Kant, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Friedrich Nietzsche are among the philosophers we feature. Composers and musicians presented on the Simply Charly site include Ludwig von Beethoven, Igor Stravinsky, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. Science and mathematics are represented by Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Kurt Godel, Alan Turing, and Paul Dirac. Obviously, this is only a partial list of some 20 historical figures Simply Charly is dedicated to. Are there any particular markets in which you’re looking to license your works? We’d like to get our books into the hands of as many people around the world as possible. After all, learning about history’s greatest movers and shakers transcends borders and is not only inspiring, but also enlightening. PUBLISHER PROFILE
HOW TO INTRODUCE CHILDREN TO TRAVEL & CULTURE At IPR License, we pride ourselves on helping niche, indie presses get the worldwide recognition they deserve. In many cases, the publishers are relatively new to licensing and rarely have an inhouse rights team in place. Through the platform we have seen many clients do their first book rights sales into territories they may not ordinarily have the contacts for. Bella and Harry are a newcomer to the children’s publishing scene, but already they have big ideas and a stunning series of original stories.
C
an you tell us more about the types of books and some of the authors you publish?
Bella & Harry, LLC is the exclusive publisher of The Adventures of Bella & Harry. Our books
an exciting way to introduce children to travel are part of a genre we refer to as children’s educational fiction. The Adventures of Bella & Harry children’s picture book series chronicles the escapades of a pup named Bella, her little brother Harry and family, who travel the world exploring the sights and sounds of new, exciting cities. The Bella & Harry series is an informative, interactive and exciting way to introduce children to travel, different countries, customs, history and landmarks. Currently there are eighteen books
in the series: Let’s Visit Paris!, Let’s Visit Venice!, Let’s Visit London!, Let’s Visit Cairo!, Let’s Visit Athens!, Let’s Visit Barcelona!, Let’s Visit Edinburgh!, Let’s Visit Rome!, Let’s Visit Istanbul!, Let’s Visit Jerusalem!, Let’s Visit Dublin!, Let’s Visit Maui!, Let’s Visit Saint Petersburg!, Let’s Visit Vancouver!, Let’s Visit Berlin!, Let’s Visit Beijing!, Let’s Visit Rio de Janeiro! and Christmas in New York City!. All books in the Adventures of Bella & Harry series have been written by Lisa Manzione and illustrated by Kristine Lucco. This series is Lisa Manzione’s first foray into children’s educational fiction writing and Kristine has previous experience illustrating children’s picture books. All of our titles are currently available in hardcover and digital formats. Interactive eBooks are available exclusively through the Reading Rainbow platform. Audio books and Spanish translations are currently in process for
PUBLISHER PROFILE
all of our titles and will be released by the end of 2016. The children’s book market is a particularly competitive one, how do you stand out?
With the Bella and Harry series, we strive to blend education and fun into a single product. Our goal is to educate children about geography and other cultures in an enjoyable, interactive way. Sibling Chihuahuas Bella and Harry are cute, likeable, fun and very energetic. The dogs engage the young reader on page one and the learning is the end of product of what a child believes was just a fun story about two dogs. After reading the story, most educators (and parents) then notice that the child has retained certain aspects of the story and that then leads to a curiosity about that specific city and the elements mentioned in the book. To help foster this curiosity, lesson plans are available for free download on our website (BellaAndHarry. com). Word matches, crossword puzzles, and discussion questions all help to reinforce the elements that are contained in the book and further discussion about the places visited. Another key component to the series is our author, Lisa Manzione. We just don’t write about any city. Each book in the series is based on Lisa’s own experiences in that city. There is an authenticity to each book that results from Lisa’s personal visit to the city. There is a large education element within your titles, is it difficult to get the balance right between entertainment and education?
Keeping the balance between these two aspects can be hard at times. The series is not intended to be an all-inclusive history book. Yes, Bella and Harry are dogs but they visit the same places, learn the same foreign words and sample the same food that you or I would in the same situation. The educational value of the books is cleverly disguised amidst dozens of illustrated pages with characters that are sure to win the hearts of young readers.
young readers gain an appreciation of the world & its cultural diversity Following the escapades of these two “jet set pups” as they explore new cities (and get into a little mischief) with their family is just a lighthearted adventure for the young reader. Yet, at the end, this same young reader realizes that there are many different places and cultures in the world. Each has its own customs, food and landmarks and this is good thing, it is not something to be apprehensive about. Traveling the world with these two cute and cuddly Chihuahuas will allow young readers to gain an appreciation of the world and its cultural diversity. Bella is also currently available as a stuffed animal. Bella is a soft, cuddly, high quality plush pup with a unique expression, intricate details and bendable, monogrammed ears. She is the perfect accessory to merge the worlds of entertainment and education. Harry is currently in plush production and will be available in 2016. How important are the buying and selling of rights, permissions and licensing for your business? Rights, permissions and licensing are all extremely important and play a pivotal role in the growth of the series. As a series with titles that cover regions all over the world, each region in the world is a potential market. Whether it’s picking up a book about a place they live in, or choosing a book about a place they have never heard about, each book has the
23
potential of reaching and engaging new markets. The characters are enticing and the message is universal, no matter where in the world you are or what language you speak.
What does the future hold for Bella and Harry? The future of Bella and Harry is very exciting. For 2016, we plan on adding 4 additional titles: Let’s Visit Malta! and Let’s Visit Florence! are the only two titles we are currently revealing. The remaining two titles are going to be decided by our readers. We take polls at our shows to see where people would like us to take the series next. So, the two cities that get the most votes (as long as it is a city that Lisa Manzione has actually visited) will be the other two books we add to our 2016 releases. The titles of these two additional 2016 titles will be disclosed in early 2016 and the release dates for these titles will be in Fall 2016. Bella and Harry also plan to add a new member to their team: Molly. Molly is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bella and Harry meet her in their Christmas in New York City! adventure. In the future, Molly will assist Bella and Harry in exploring domestic (United States) locations while Bella and Harry continue their international explorations. A JOURNEY OF HOPE American author and spokesperson for children’s rights, Donna Friess, first rose to fame when her autobiography became a US bestseller featured on international radio and TV programmes such as the Oprah Winfrey Show. Her story is one of tragic circumstances intervening against father to protect her four year old niece from molestation. After a forty year teaching career at Cypress College, Donna has since turned her energies toward working with individuals and in the small group setting, rather than the large classroom setting. Dr. Friess offers life coaching and personal development workshops. Following the release of her first fiction novel, IPR asked Donna to elaborate on her journey thus far:
“
It’s now been 22 years since the release of my autobiography Cry The Darkness: One Woman’s Triumph Over the Tragedy of Incest, and I am proud to say that I have been at the forefront of the movement to expose incest for the tragic assault on children that it is.
In 1991 when our story became the cover story for the Los Angeles Times Magazine revealing the frequency and insidiousness of incest, which in the majority of cases is father to daughter. There were only two other figures besides us willing to come forth in the media; Actress Roseanne Barr whose father denied it, and former Miss America, Marilyn Van Derbur Atler, whose father was dead. My story received so much international attention because my sisters and I had a guilty verdict after a fifteen month long trial in which our niece, our father’s four year old granddaughter, had to testify in front of her perpetrator. It was a sensational story and outcome. The result was many changes in California laws making it safer for women and children. The six year statute of limitations was removed, early release offenders were put on depo prevera, the drug to suppress their desires, and other laws such as making “menace and duress” grounds for conviction. Soon other states followed California and the norm today across America is tougher laws and more safety nets for children. I was honored to be at many bill signing media events with the then Governor Pete Wilson. We formed a grass roots movement to bring the need to protect children more fully before the entire country. In 2004, President

Yes this subject is important to me... It is my life’s work. secret, it is out in the open, but the frequency of offenses continues to be astounding. One of three or four little girls and one in about seven little boys will be molested before they enter puberty. Yes, this subject is important to me. Perhaps it is my life’s work. Human rights is a subject close to my heart. A child’s right to know his origins fits into my work as an advocate for children, however, as an advocate for women, I see the importance of privacy. It seemed natural for me to explore an adoptee’s right to know his or her origins vs. a birth mother’s right to a lifetime of privacy, which is a central theme of my novel. My half-brother was given up at birth when I was ten. I was very aware of the fact that he never came home from the hospital; that babies can be given away… That truth also reinforced how important it was that I not tell on my father for what he did behind closed doors to me. We finally found our brother 45 years later. Today he is well integrated into our family. He said, “I knew you would find me.” The Unraveling of Shelby Forrest has received lots of recognition within the industry. I think the fact that my Shelby novel has placed or won in every competition it has been entered in this year speaks to the fact that it has an important message and is a gripping read. With every award there is an opportunity for a news release and for social media releases which increases sales. Also the awards are something of a guarantee to the reader that the book is worthwhile and exciting to read.
The book awards this year where Shelby has gleaned: Honor Mention - The International Pacific Rim book Festival, Honorable Mention- San Francisco Book Festival, Winner for Most Outstanding New Novel from Indie Excellence Awards, Finalist Independent Author Network: Finalist is Most Outstanding Romance 2015 and Finalist in Most Outstanding First Novel 2015, Honorable Mention Hollywood Festival of Books.” [Editor]: Tell us a little about the reader demographic for your novel. “I have been contacted by readers all over America who have read my novel, some say, “I need Dr. Lewis (the psychologist in the novel)!” Most say that they were drawn to the story because they have an adopted child or are adoptees themselves, others appreciated the psychological aspect of the book.
Child sexual abuse is no longer a secret [...] but continues to be astounding It is a psychological thriller. The market is toward both men and women, but it may appeal more to women. It is interesting that it was the finalist in the Independent Author Network competition for Best Romance for 2015. It is a love story and it is a story that weaves in a lot of psychology regarding moving forward in life and dealing positively with anxiety and depression. It is a story with a very satisfying ending. It is a story about hope.”

[Editor]: Why did you choose to selfpublish? And what do you see as the benefits/drawbacks? “I have owned my own publishing company for over twenty years and have had considerable success getting my non-fiction books out into the world. I am excited about my novel and I knew that the way to let the world see it was to get it out there. I have hired professional promoters for print and social media and have been the guest on various radio shows. The advantage of doing it yourself is that you retain control over the editing and the entire process is much faster than with some publishing houses. The disadvantage is that small presses do not have the infrastructure for mass distribution. We have been gratified to discover that the readers love the novel and find that it teaches while gripping their interest. Of course Cry the Darkness is its own riveting page turner, the truth being almost hard to believe.” For more information on Donna Friess and the rights available for her work, head to www.iprlicense.com

COMIC BOOK
Author and entreprenuer, Steve Bynoe, has a keen interest in comics books and superheroes. His company Boeboe Creative self-publishes his work, while Comix Asylum an interactive, digital, magazine & website that explores the world of comic books, movies, television, toys and collectibles. Through his love of comics, he published his first book Time is Relative (pictured), the first in the Chronokari Alpha series - a children’s fantasy/sci-fi/ adventure saga based around a set of chrono twins...

in Paradise, which I currently publish through my company, Boeboe Creative.”
[Editor]: Have you always had an interest in comic books and design?
“A chrono twin is essentially a temporal twin or someone born at exactly the same time, down to the last second as someone else. Miles and Derrick are the last members of an ancient order, the Chronokari, who were tasked with protecting Time, the fourth dimension. It has been centuries since the last of the Chronokari walked the Earth and their disappearance and the reasons behind that remain a mystery. When Miles and Derrick collide in gym class, they unlock their ability to control time, and the
“Comic books have been an important part of my life from as far back as I can remember. I think the first picture I remember drawing was of the Amazing Spider-Man when I was about three years old. Spider-Man was my favourite hero as a child and I remember trying to draw pictures of him as often as I could. My love of Spider-Man grew into a love of comic books and they fostered my love of reading. Comic books and art consumed me as a kid and I spent hours, from primary school through high school, writing and drawing my own comic books. I guess my interest in comic books has never really waned. I read them all through university and still collect them today. They inspired me to become a writer and an artist, and my love of the medium has resulted in the creation of Chronokari Alpha as well as a digital magazine and website that I own called Comix Asylum.
“[Comic books] inspired me to become a writer and an artist” At Comix Asylum we do video and print interviews with comic book artists and writers, review comics and the movies based on them. We even highlight some of the cosplayers that attend conventions dressed as their favourite heroes. I also have a couple of ideas that I plan to publish as novels and comic books, including a horror/heist caper and Edge: East Wind
[Editor]: Your two main characters are chrono twins – can you tell us more about them?
“Whether its Hercules or Superman, the battle against good and evil has always intrigued us” Chronokari are reborn. They now have to protect their city from a collection of monsters and other worldly creatures that spew forth from an unstable portal to another dimension.” [Editor]: This is the first in a series of books chronicling the adventures of Miles and Derrick - how far have you got in the planning and the writing of the next instalments? “I initially had plans to make Chronokari Alpha into a cartoon so I did a lot of work setting up the mythology of the series. I created a story bible with a deep backstory
33
and a wide cast of characters. I’m currently halfway through the second installment and have outlines already completed for another ten books. There are a lot of twists and turns in the works and I can’t wait to continue the saga of Miles and Derrick.” [Editor]: Are there any particular territories in which you think these types of books would appeal? “With the surging global market and appetite for superheroes and comic book related properties, Chronokari Alpha will appeal to all territories. Every culture has its own set of heroes to go along with the globally recognizable ones that have become icons and transcend culture and language. Superheroes are modern mythology. Whether it’s Hercules or Superman, the battle against good and evil has always intrigued us. Chronokari Alpha shares those same elements and readers all over the world will enjoy the adventures of Miles and Derrick, now and for years to come.” Find out more about Steve Bynoe and his work visit iprlicense.com

Amanda tells us location is everything. It can emphasize mood, show variety essential to plot and even transport the reader to another, sometimes unexpectedly terrifying, place.
AN EXTRACT...
“
Jo sat and waited, watching the sea. It was so hot sitting in the glare of the sun. The combination of Campari and the journey yesterday was making her sleepy. She closed her eyes, drifted to the chatter of nearby Germans and faded into a reverie, back to another time when she was beachcombing. It was on a beach in Tangier and her mother had been lying a little way away with a muscular man wearing blue shorts. Her mother was topless, the local men stared without embarrassment. They hadn’t been interested in Jo’s collection of shells. A shadow fell across the table and the blocking of sunlight woke her: She was back on this beach with the sound of speedboats roaring across the water. The waiter was collecting the empty glasses; he secured the bill under the ashtray. Jo smiled up at him then resumed looking out to sea. The speedboats were silent for a minute, powered further up the coast. She could hear the distant roll of waves and closer, the surf hitting the sand; closer still, the sound of glasses being washed. She stretched. All she wanted was to go back to her room at the spa hotel. She stared into the middle distance, feeling sleepy again. It had been a long time, too long now since Zara had gone. She glanced along the beach. The waiter moved towards the table, clearly anxious that they should pay and move on. ‘I’m waiting for the woman who was there.’ She pointed to the empty chair opposite. She removed her sandal and with the toe, drew circles in the
sand and thought about Mark, imagining him at work, checking patients, rushing round his ward. Was she too trusting? Some of the nurses were very attractive. She glanced at her watch. The waiter had returned. ‘She said she was going to the toilet –’ ‘You want toilet?’ He nodded to the back of the café, picked up the bill, handed it to her. ‘You’ve got one here? But I thought –’ She grabbed her bag and rushed to where he pointed. Her stomach was knotting and she felt sick. Outside the toilet there was a sink with a bent tap, a cracked mirror. She knocked on the door marked WC, went in. ‘Christ!’ she said while she stood in the concrete room with the cracked toilet bowl and the sound of jet skis buzzing through her brain. She reached into her bag and pulled out her towel. There was nothing else. No purse. No passport. Her book dropped to the floor: A Memory of Loss splayed in the dirt. She searched in her bag again, turning it inside out, shaking it violently. Nothing. Someone began banging on the door. Squatting on her heels, with her fingers she searched each corner of the dank sour smelling room. How could she have let this happen? Her fingers touched cardboard. She picked it up. A discarded menu. Other than sand and dirt there was nothing else on the floor. She picked up her book from the toilet roll where she’d balanced it, and stuffed it back into her bag and opened the door.”

Q&A WITH AMANDA... When did you first start writing? “I started writing short stories and poetry when I was a teenager and some were published. I began to write regularly in 2004 after I completed an MA in Creative Writing and Authorship at Sussex University. Since then I have had many short stories published in magazines and written three novels, of which two have been published.” Your first novel The Eloquence of Desire has been translated into Turkish, can you explain how this came about?
“This book was published by an independent press, Sparkling Books based in the UK. The Eloquence of Desire was on show at the London Book Fair and Turkish publisher Yediveren Yayınları based in Istanbul took an interest and were given a copy by Sparkling Books. They really liked the storyline and my writing style and bought the Turkish rights. It has been translated into Turkish and given a different cover.” Just Two Weeks is set in Sri Lanka and the Lake District - how do you think these differing settings will appeal to readers and potential rights buyers? “They are extremes both in weather and culture. Sri Lanka is a tropical island with many Buddhist temples and The Lake
35
District has a cool climate where instead of temples, Jo the protagonist finds drugs and clubs. I used the differences in the locations to emphasise Jo’s feelings of isolation and terror which creates an aura of suspense. The plot winds intricately around aspects of each location and the two variants are as essential to the narrative as are the characters.” How much time do you spend promoting/ marketing your books? “It really depends on how much time I have but, probably about 10 hours per week.” What are your writing goals? How high does the domestic/international licensing of your work feature? “I came very close to getting a Literary Agent for Just Two Weeks on two occasions and won the IPR Agents Award for this novel. Domestic/international licensing of my work is very high in my priorities. I write to sell and my next novel A Little Rain Will Fall will be out shortly.” Would you also mind telling us a little about your upcoming title? “A Little Rain Will Fall is set in Brighton, UK and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Four characters are central to the narrative. Solomon, a newly arrived refugee from Ethiopia moves in next door to Marianne an agony aunt. Solomon who was a humans rights worker in Ethiopia is riddled with guilt about the Ethiopians he has left behind especially his sister Hana and her four children. Marianne is initially attracted to Solomon but when he is accused of murder she backs off. Charlotte, one of Marianne’s correspondents becomes inadvertently involved in rescuing Hana from Nairobi where she has fled from Addis Ababa in the back of a lorry. When Solomon is cleared and the real murderer found, Marianne aided by Charlotte realises her true feeling for Solomon which are reciprocated.” For more information on Amanda and her available rights, visit her IPR Profile at iprlicense.com

Somewhere along the line, she realised, she had lost herself to a world of corporate profit and material achievements … And then began her long journey back to belonging. In this extraordinary book of myth, memoir and modern-day mentors, Blackie writes for ordinary women who are weary or wrathful at the treatment of women around the world and the devastation of our planet itself. THE LEIPZIG AFFAIR Fiona Rintoul 9781906582975 Aurora Metro (2015) Worldwide rights available The Leipzig Affair takes us deep into the Orwellian world of East Germany before the fall of the Wall, where the Stasi ruled and no-one could be trusted. The story spans pre and post Communism and recreates the intense, fear-based atmosphere of those trapped by a failing society. Astonishingly, for a debut novel, the author juxtaposes the strain of living in such a society with the equally unreal world of London’s Canary Wharf in the 90s. She looks at how the lives of individuals are warped by being caught up in these extreme social systems. • •
