hen talking to our publisher members we always discuss markets they are particularly keen to grow their business in. Many point to the US, Latin America, and/or Eastern Europe, with increasing mentions of Africa, but probably the most frequent request we hear is – how can we break into China? And much of this is due to the remarkable financial and business growth demonstrated in recent years and the simple fact of just how huge the country is. Not to mention the opportunities within the publishing industry that will continue to present themselves. China is a market we’ve been looking at very closely for a long time and have recently extended our reach into via a partnership with The Charlesworth Group, a company who, after 15 years operating in Beijing, has developed strong relationships with a full range of stakeholders within the Chinese publishing community. This partnership will help us engage with a variety of Chinese publishers and help facilitate rights and licensing transactions through ‘TradeRights’ – IPR’s fully transactional platform for whole book rights. And this engagement process will be accelerated by our presence at the Beijing International Book Fair itself. As the largest publishing event in the Asian market this provides a great opportunity to meet face-to-face with a range of publishers to outline how we, as a company, can help them and how they might be able to work with our existing and future members. China is not only a fascinating country but also a captivating marketplace and I for one can’t wait to be amidst the bright lights of Beijing and get to understand more about the culture, the intricacies of Chinese publishing and of course how we can help our members break into such an important piece of the global rights and licensing puzzle. - Tom Chalmers, Managing Director @Tom_Chalmers

Tom Chalmers, Managing Director
Kerry Lagan, Sales Manager
Tom founded IPR License in 2012 as an answer to the problems he was facing as an independent publisher – he recognised the need for immediate revenue streams to supplement book sales revenue. Why wasn’t there an online platform to enable global licensing on a much wider scale? To provide this, IPR License was created.
Kerry has joined IPR from the rights department at Pan Macmillan and has a strong background in licensing from her previous roles at Little, Brown Book Group and EDItEUR. She leads sales activities, liaising with publishers and literary agents worldwide looking to generate additional revenue from the buying and selling of rights.
Caroline Sloan, Licensing Manager
Abbie Houghton, Product Manager
Scott Philipson, PR & Communications
Libby Whitehouse Partnerships Manager
Caroline started her career in publishing in the Contracts and Rights Departments at Penguin Random House by the time she left in 2014, she handled all US and translation rights for the Random House Cornerstone Division. She leads licensing activities at IPR, working with publishers and authors looking to trade and license rights on the site.
Abbie has been a part of IPR License since its launch in 2012. She currently manages the accounts on the system, helping publishers and authors get the most out of the platform, as well as helping to develop the product. She continues to develop the site to make the ever changing world of rights and licensing a simple process for publishers.
Scott has worked within the financial services sector for over nine years as a journalist, editor, PR and copywriter. He co-founded specialist PR company White Dragon Communications Ltd before leaving to set up his own company FlatCap Communications in 2011. He now handles the press and publicity for IPR License.
Libby joined IPR last year and launched the IPR Rights Magazine in October 2013. It is distributed at the biggest international book fairs and publishing events. As well producing as the magazine, she also manages sales and accounts for both publisher and author members, while heading IPR’s social media, promotions and competitions.

What’s New?
IPR License expands to China A
n important announcement in recent times was the upping of our presence in the Chinese market. This have been a conscious decision as we look to engage with more Chinese publishers to try and satisfy the evergrowing demand exhibited amongst our new and existing members. Of course this is an on-going process - our first presence at the Beijing International Book Fair will certainly help with this - and the better positioned we become in understanding the development towards wider international trade in the Chinese publishing arena the better. And such expansion into key markets and having specialist knowledge within these territories has also resulted in the extension of our existing routes to market via exclusive agreements to represent titles throughout Eastern Europe & Russia whilst also engaging new sub-agents in South Korea and Japan. The quality of our sub-agents and scouts is a key
element in unlocking vast amounts of licensing revenue for the highly marketable work we have on our platform. We fully appreciate the need to have experts on the ground in key territories and are constantly looking to increase our company network to promote our members’ available rights to an international publishing audience on a daily basis. It’s this network that have helped our transactional subsidiary rights and licensing business go through the roof in recent weeks.
New Generation Publishing author Paul Hurley has won the latest IPR License ‘Agents Pick’ for his fictional historical military tale Waffen SS Britain. Five pieces of work were shortlisted in total; Garena was Born on a Thursday by Shupiwe Suffolk, Global Raider by James McKenna, My Name is... Paul Belardo by TJ Samson, The Manly Art of Seduction by Perry Brass and winning entry Waffen SS Britain by Paul Hurley. With more and more authors adding their key titles on a daily basis Agent’s Pick has become increasingly competitive, so congratulations to Paul on his thought-provoking and engaging piece of work.
Agent’s Pick In other news, self-published
We’re seeing a growing number of self-published authors appreciate the value and benefits attached to rights and licensing through our platform. Enquiries, offers and deals are happening on a daily basis so we continue to urge all indie, self-published and aspiring authors not to ignore this important and valuable revenue stream. Agent’s Pick is a regular competition in partnership with the Andrew Lownie Literary Agency. The winner receives a professional critique on their manuscript, as well as global promotion.

only fully transactional solution for whole book rights. As indicated in some of these deals, we’ve also seen demand for audio and large print deals rise by 32% in Q2 2014. And with demand expected to increase further in Q3, we are in talks with a number of domestic and international audio book publishers and distributors to open up additional channels for members to transact even more business. It has also been noted that licensing agreements for large print books are also on the up with deals being completed on a regular basis on an international scale. The simple fact is that a number of our publisher members have recognised these as areas in which they have been missing out on key revenue. And we are delighted to be helping to correct that and will continue to do so.

Global Market Focus:
Turki s h Delight
As part of a series of articles for Publishing Perspectives, compiled by IPR License’s Managing Director Tom Chalmers, here is the latest Global Book Licensing Snapshot to coincide with Beijing International Book Fair’s country of honour: The Republic of Turkey.
T
urkey has made great strides in the publishing world in recent times and is a territory whose profile has risen through being the focal point of some high profile trade events. Being the guest of honour at the 2008 Frankfurt Book Fair and the Market Focus at the 2013 London Book Fair certainly brought plenty of attention to Turkish publishers and their works and now being the Country of Honour at the Beijing International Book Fair will raise even more awareness for this growing marketplace. There have been many reasons cited for the
steady growth in Turkish publishing, these being: a population growth, the lengthening of compulsory primary education to eight years, an increase in the GNP and a variety of books becoming more available with the improved distribution network and the development of publishing technologies. A vibrant economy and growing publishing industry will inevitably lead to increasing domestic and international publishing opportunities. This is especially exciting for those dealing in foreign rights because nearly 50% of the books published each year

With economic growth in a time of global financial crisis, an exponentially growing publishing market, a huge demand for works in translation, and an increasingly recognised high-calibre literary tradition, Turkey will continue to be viewed as a key opportunity in the international publishing arena.

7 simple steps for self publishing authors
epubli:
Who are epubli?
epubli is a print and e-book publishing platform located in BerlinKreuzberg. As part of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, epubli offers the best alternative to traditional publishing and makes it easier for writers of all types to publish their work. British self-publishing and marketing expert Joanna Penn has entered the German indie market with epubli: she published the German version of her bestselling mystery thriller Pentecost. More top books published via epubli: historic novel The Bitter Trade by British author Piers Alexander, hilarious facts about What I know about Germans written down by Australian Blogger Liv Hambrett, and the story of the cult game Magic the Gathering So do you wear a cape? by Titus Chalk. Look out for them!
Barbara Thiele is Chief Product Officer and Chief Operating Officer at epubli.
Leonie Langer is responsible for Author Relations and Communication. Her and Barbara work on further internationalizing epubli, thus enabling authors worldwide to use the platform.
2
014 is a very good year for self-publishing. Only a few years ago self-publishing providers and indie authors were outlaws, they were not invited to book fairs and ignored, if not to say: avoided by newspaper feuilletons, traditional publishers and readers, likewise. Within only two or three years this has changed fundamentally. After the first self-publishing success stories featuring unknown writers who became millionaires with their independently published books, the whole business has come to life. Self-published books - e-books especially - are on top of bestseller’s lists, new self-publishing platforms are popping up everywhere, more and more authors - both newcomers
16
and established ones - decide to self-publish because they appreciate the independence, flexibility, transparency and last but not least the high royalties. Self-publishing has become not only successful but also a real threat to traditional publishers. As a consequence, many of them are starting to experiment with self-publishing models themselves. Just take a look around the book fairs, be it Beijing, London or Frankfurt: self-publishing is everywhere, on stages and forums, in discussions and talks. This is great news. But it does not mean that self-publishers can lean back now. We are still at the very beginning of the selfpublishing journey. The majority of
indie books have neither found their way into brickand-mortar bookstores nor into the literary reviews of newspapers. Many people are still wrinkling their noses at self-published books - and many more have never even heard of self-publishing! Yet. The good news is that we live in fastmoving times. Not only do selfpublishing services, digital printing and epub conversion improve steadily, the awareness and reputation of self-publishing rise extremely fast as well. Moreover, thanks to digitization, international markets are merging and self-publishers all over the world can exchange tips and experiences with each other and with their readers,
everyday on the internet and face to face on events like book fairs or writers’ conferences. For instance German writers benefit immensely from viewing English and American indie authors as a model for successful marketing and reader involvement, as they are a few years ahead of the current German market. At the same time, English speaking indie authors can learn from German writers about the pecularities of the German market, if they want to enter it - which they should seriously consider! After having been neglected for years, the German book market is becoming increasingly attractive for American and British writers and publishers. The latest figures from the
Export Sales Report of the Association of American Publishers state that Germany is not only the second biggest European market for sales of American print books (after the UK) and the third biggest global market for sales of American e-books (after the UK and Australia). In 2013, Germany was also the market with the largest year-on-year growth in e-book revenue. The overall market share for e-books has reached a new peak in 2013 at about 25% by volume and 12% by value. Compared to 2012, the overall market share for e-books has doubled in the year leading up to 2013 (5%). At the same time, online book sales reached up to 10.4%, making up 16.5%.
free. The result will be worth the costs and your readers will show their gratitude by buying your book and by writing positive reviews.
3. Invest time.
This includes thinking about your target group, your marketing strategies, etc. in advance - and to get in touch with the right people who can help you with that at an early stage. This also means:
4. Be interactive.
Use social media and social reading platforms to communicate with your readers. Start talking to them before you publish your book and share insights from the writing process. Readers will not only give you feedback that you can use for your next book but help you reach more readers by sharing / liking / commenting on / retweeting your posts.
There are still a few challenges that self-published authors worldwide are facing and which they can overcome by paying attention to some basic rules:
5. Build a brand.
Remember, self-reliant authors are a long term success. Only authors who establish a sustainable brand will build up a solid fanbase - and sell their books! Once it was the publishing houses who stood for quality and certain values - now it is yourself. This is your chance.
1. Be professional.
Or involve professionals who help you with your book wherever you need help: cover designers, editors, illustrators, press and marketing experts. This also includes selfpublishing platforms or experts on book rights.
6. Be discoverable.
Pay as much attention to your metadata as possible. Think carefully about the title and subtitle of your book, as well as about keywords and a nice cover. The latter should be significant and readable in small formats because many people are searching for new books on their smartphones -
2. Invest in your book.
High quality service for professional layout, editing and cover design is not for
17
make it easier for them to find yours!
7. Be diverse.
Put your book into as many online shops as possible. Those with an iPad will prefer to buy e-books in the iBook store and people with a nook will get them at Barnes and Noble, whereas people with a kindle reader probably shop at Amazon. In Germany, the tolino reader is growing fast, a cooperation of the big German retailers Hugendubel, Weltbild and Thalia. Make sure that your e-book is available on all those platforms. You should also consider offering your book both in digital and print version. There’ll always be people who prefer reading print /digital only. To authors who have only recently thought about turning indie, this might sound like a lot of homework. Dear future indie authors: Don’t worry! Thousands of successful self-publishing authors have proven that it’s possible not only to publish independently but also to do so very successfully. Moreover, there are self-publishing platforms like epubli which make turning indie very easy by helping authors in the publishing process and offering marketing advice, and organisations such as IPR License who are experts on book rights and licensing. Now is a very good time to self-publish, maybe the best. Make sure to be a part of it. epubli is a young and fast growing self-publishing company located in BerlinKreuzberg. www.epubli.co.uk

Quentin would possibly describe himself as a ‘man on a mission’; someone driven to write after a fascinating and eventful career travelling the world, meeting many captivating people and often ending up in some less captivating situations. When you delve into the pages of any of his mystery thrillers and historical dramas, you can be assured his rather acute angle on past events is clear in the weaving of an intriguing tale of fiction with real events in history and time. His style is fast paced and the action in many of his novels moves across the globe with consummate ease as well researched storylines are pursued, and with some unexpected endings, finally unveiled. Influenced by the works of great thriller writers such as Graham Greene and Tom Clancy, Quentin writes each and every day; has a veritable store of great storylines and sequels for future projects and continues to be highly productive, with seven novels and six writer’s reference books in print.
Ingrid is a native Californian who now lives with her family in Norway. She has had a successful career as a financial journalist for Dow Jones Newswires and as a copywriter for one of the largest creative agencies in Scandinavia, among other positions in the world of corporate communications. She is a recipient of the Humphrey´s Fellowship in Writing at Columbia University in New York. Bing & Nero is her first book, and is the first of a planned series of books that will feature this clever little boy and his robot friend. The style of writing in the book is simple and vivid, striking the right tone to accompany the colorful and lively illustrations. Her five year-old son is the inspiration behind the story and it is meant to promote creativity, perseverance and joy in building from your own imagination.
Clive Allan
TJ Samson
Clive was born, and currently resides in West Sussex on the south coast of England and also has a home in the Scottish Highlands, an area he has come to know intimately. For thirty years, he worked as a police officer specialising in various aspects of the work, including that of the detective branch. In 2008, Clive retired, and commenced work on his debut novel, The Drumbeater. “My style of writing is fact based fiction, not the run-of-the-mill style of detective mysteries, but something different; a blend of modern day policing and historical mystery, involving cases that are influenced by Scotland’s turbulent past. With The Drumbeater sales doing well, I am currently working on a sequel, The Well Of The Dead, in which my main character, Inspector Neil Strachan is pitched into an intriguing mystery connected to the events of the Jacobite rebellion in 1746. I feel there is considerable scope for further stories in the series, hopefully providing Inspector Strachan with a secure future!”
“Thoughts are not animated by one source. Being open to many stimuli can allow a singular idea to form. Such is my mantra.” T J Samson has absorbed gothic, sci-fi, modernist and American texts when writing, as well as other influences such as sitcoms, the advice of doctors, music and TV adverts. Still, being based in Scotland, a key voice was heard above others: Robert Louis Stevenson. The novella, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, energised a notion. “I took its theme of duality and blended it with medical research on bipolar disorder. A character, and a plan, was formed. The result was a novella: My Name is… Paul Belardo. Other voices joined the chorus, from Paul Auster, Don Delillo, Simon Pegg to Virginia Woolf. Each sparked directions on structure, black comedy, philosophy and character. This method allowed for a realisation of my style: I experiment through being manically open to influences in a drive towards originality. ”

Build your social media presence The publishing industry has become a fast-paced world of likes, tweets and reblogs. Here are some top tips for authors on how to make the most of your books on social media platforms…
Be self-promotion savvy. Take advice from other writers using social media to self-promote. Businesses tend to shout about their offers, but it can sometimes be a turn-off for readers and publishers if authors promote their books in a similar way. Instead, try to treat social media users as though they are right in front of you. Your message is more likely to be read if it reads as a comment, than if it is self-promotional spam.
Success is not a numbers game.
Remain professional.
Regardless of your number of likes, followers or ‘friends’, to get the most out of social media platforms you need to know where to post and who to approach. Take some time to research forums and websites and find the best industry professionals, author services or literary announcements to keep up to date with publishing markets and trends.
As a writer, there should be no room for spelling errors or punctuation mistakes. Though some websites such as Twitter have a limited character count, your message will be taken more seriously if you avoid ‘text speak’ such as “C U L8R”. Remain polite and grammatically correct for the best impact. Make sure you come across as approachable, as your social media presence reflects you both as a person and an author.
21
Don’t be afraid to explore. Social media outlets go further than setting up an account on Facebook, Twitter or Linkedin. Try searching for writer’s groups on Facebook, or searching a hashtag such as #amwriting to connect with fellow authors. The beauty of social media is you can interact and have your say! Your opinion matters, so get online and connect! Feel free to email us if you would like further tips on how to build or increase your online presence.
