“New Delhi: A Vibrant Arena of Publishing” The first major book fair of any new year carries with it the many hopes and aspirations of authors all over the world as they look for new platforms to showcase their work in the hope of securing new deals and reach new audiences. And where better to start than in New Delhi? The Indian publishing industry is already huge and continues to grow at pace, creating many opportunities and avenues into this vibrant arena and now, in its 42nd year, the New Delhi World Book Fair continues to encompass all that is good within this marketplace. The rich tradition of the fair has long played a pioneering role in highlighting the diverse and multilingual profile of the country, not to mention the strength of its publishing industry whilst also highlighting the emergence of a new literary landscape. And this year will certainly be no different. With rights and licensing high on the agenda at the fair, the New Delhi Rights Table provides a great place to facilitate business interactions to buy/sell translation rights between Indian and foreign publishers. So with that in mind let’s hope that lots of deals get done and new books discovered on a global scale. And if any authors, publishers or potential advertisers would like to reserve their spots for future IPR Rights Magazines then please contact us at info@iprlicense.com for further information. Enjoy the fair,

Background
About Us IPR License’s mission is to become the industry standard for the licensing of subsidiary book rights. We currently have 200 plus forward-thinking publishers already on board as members and a growing number of wide-ranging partnerships and affiliations in place with companies such as the Copyright Clearance Centre (CCC), Frankfurt Buchmesse, NBN International, The Charlesworth Group, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), Ingram Content Group, EDItEUR, the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), the Linked Content Coalition (LCC), The Association of Independent Authors (AiA), the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG), The Independent Book Publishers Association, the Publishers Association, the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses, the Copyright Licensing Agency and BIC.
London-based IPR License was founded in 2012 by Tom Chalmers. As director of an independent publishing company, Tom was aware of the lack of a dedicated trading service for literary rightsholders. The predominance of book fairs and back-and-forth negotiations between rights agents and commissioning editors continued to leave a gap in the marketplace for the listing and trading of content rights. With this in mind, IPR License was developed, leading the way for a fully-transactional online based global rightstrading platform.
How it Works for Publishers Rights-holders assign records to their account and add new records – whether already published or not – as well as adding additional information to their records. Those looking to purchase rights can use the search facility to locate work of specific interest to them that
is available to license in their territory and then contact the rights-holder directly through the messaging system or directly make an offer to be negotiated through the TradeRights solution. The IPR License platform is open to non-members to allow access for all interested parties across the industry looking to buy and sell subsidiary rights on a global scale. This means that members’ titles are accessible to a huge number of rights buyers who can make instant offers on titles, negotiate and complete a variety of transactions in full. With records on the system being added daily, there’s a huge variety of titles to choose from, all with the necessary rights information fully visible. Furthermore, publishers can highlight key titles from their lists which are then prioritised in the search results. In order to list titles, authors, publishers and agents need to be members of the IPR License platform. IPR charges an annual membership fee based on company size ranging from £249 to £1,999 (or a flat fee of £99 for authors) and then takes 15% commission from each deal completed via the platform. So why not join IPR License today? For further information visit www.iprlicense.com. If you have any further questions or queries email info@iprlicense.com

News T
he winter months have certainly seen no signs of hibernation here at IPR License, if anything we’ve been busier than ever. Looking back over the past few months the Frankfurt Book Fair now seems like a distant memory, but the truth is that we are still realising the benefits attached to the opportunities and relationships stemming from this event. Business has been brisk and with mounting interest in our growing suite of technological solutions, we are in the midst of more high-level conversations than ever. It’s fair to say that increasing numbers of publishing houses all over the world are looking to maximise the value attached to their licensing business both internally and externally. And technology remains at the heart of making this process as efficient as possible. Hand in hand with technology, partnerships remain a key component in moving our business forward. As such we have strengthened our links with the Copyright Clearance Centre and are close to agreeing more strategic alliances with some of the largest names in the publishing world. And being a global platform it’s important to maintain an international presence. With that in mind we have recently entered into a promotional partnership with Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture, to promote the work of Indonesian authors and publishers on a global scale. Working alongside Indonesia’s National Committee and the Frankfurt Book Fair, we will be engaging in a comprehensive marketing campaign to promote the works of a range of Indonesian publishing houses and authors, alongside a significant presence at a number of key international events.
6
This international interest is also evident from the raft of trade and STM publishers who have joined in recent weeks from all corners of the globe. We saw a particularly strong uplift in STM publisher membership and bulk uploads to the platform in Q2 2014. Which serves to highlight the importance attached to maximising licensing revenue for scholarly, scientific, technical, medical and professional publishers. And this is evident as we have firmly established ourselves as the subsidiary rights representation of choice for some of the largest players in the STM publishing fields such as Elsevier and Wolters Kluwer. In addition to this boost in membership numbers we’ve also announced a digital link up with BooksoniX. Through the relationship, publishers taking advantage of BooksoniX’s online booklist management service will have the ability to feed their content directly into the IPR License global rights platform for licensing purposes. Plus
we’re working in partnership to produce a co-branded module containing all the relevant rights and licensing information to offer a comprehensive front to end service. This direct feed will help rights holders generate new leads and facilitate deals on a global scale via TradeRights - IPR License’s bespoke transactional solution for the buying and selling of whole book rights and permissions. This link underlines our continued ethos of providing members with added value by securing new and innovative ways to help boost their rights and licensing business on a global scale. And this feed and module will certainly help streamline the route to market and generate even more incremental opportunities for members to further increase their bottom lines. PARTNERSHIPS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN ASIA

olters Kluwer is a leading global provider of information solutions and services for healthcare professional’s globally to help them make important decisions on patient care and outcomes. We work in close partnership with many of the world’s leading medical societies to help them innovate their journal brand globally and provide content to markets and users in their preferred format. We work with multiple outlets to publish translated local editions for Society-owned and proprietary titles in our journal portfolio. Each partnership is unique and is tailored to the particular market/country.
We work closely with the journal editorial teams to develop programs aligned with the society’s own goals and that are in the best interests of growing the journal’s reach and impact. Every opportunity is unique, but all local edition arrangements protect the journal brand by not allowing for the creation of any “new” content. In addition to traditional local-language licensing opportunities, we have successfully forged new opportunities for local-language publishing, working with international societies to translate content from our published journals for publication in local titles. These arrangements are such that the electronic
rights to the translated content would be retained by Wolters Kluwer or its societies and can be repurposed and resold electronically. The majority of our local edition projects are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. In the last three years, we’ve seen a shift in these projects developed predominately in Europe, to Asia, in particular China, Korea and India. In addition, Japan continues to be a growth market for local content licensing opportunities.

A SAMPLE OF WOLTERS KLUWER:
This market shift for local content is due to several factors, including the introduction of regulations internationally, such as the Sunshine Act that limits spending by the pharma industry in Europe; increasing acceptance among physicians in Asia reading English text; and the recent financial crisis in the West.

For all local editions, we establish a rigorous editorial process. A local Editor, selected and approved by the original editorial team, reviews the selection of articles, checks the translations and manages the overall process of the local edition in collaboration with the local publisher. All articles and issues are approved by the Editorial Team of the original Journal before publication. In addition, strong local market knowledge is essential for success, particularly when navigating regional bureaucratic challenges that can require the aid of government collaboration.
The Cruiser is a polypropylene hip abduction brace for treating children with hip dysplasia from infancy to 3 years of age. Global Market Focus:
Charting Territories
Compiled by Tom Chalmers, Managing Director at IPR License In the continuation of our regular series, global rights platform IPR License looks at what’s happening in key publishing territories around the world.
T
his month we’re reporting on a session from our recent Global Rights Licensing: The Bigger Picture conference. This saw leading figures from a range of creative sectors highlight how they maximise licensing revenue and, the topic which will be the focal point of this article, a look at emerging markets for licensing, especially in regards to translation rights and piracy within these territories. The panel at this particular session was comprised of Emma House, Director of Publisher Relations at the Publishers Association; Lorella Belli of the Lorella Belli Literary Agency; Silvia Serra, Director of Rights, Licensing & Permissions at Wolters Kluwer and James Bennett, Head of Development at Copyright Licensing Agency.

hen looking at the performance of translation rights, Emma House pointed out that Western Europe remains a key market for the majority of UK publishers. She also cited Latin America as an area which has experienced the largest increase in translation rights in recent times, highlighting Brazil as the major player. Key points being that it had a young population with growing levels of disposable income and its high profile due to the past and future major events such as the World Cup and the Olympics. She said: “These factors have helped create a big appetite for English language publishing and the presence of Amazon and Kobo are providing stronger routes to market. Whilst there are some
increase over the last couple of years, in terms of both advances people are paying and the number of deals. The strongest market for translation rights continues to be Germany. This is in no small part due to long-term high readership levels, good infrastructure and that it remained a buying market even throughout the economic crisis of recent years, which was in stark contrast to other European countries, in particular Italy, Portugal, Spain and Greece. We have been selling a lot in Italy this year, but Holland is still difficult, and Poland probably not as strong as it used to be.” She did indicate that activity levels for rights in translation had increased in the past year across much of Europe
“big appetite for English Language publishing” amazing book shops, it’s a huge country which, in parts, has been poorly served but online retailers are making big strides to provide more content to a population with a real thirst for knowledge.” Lorella Belli agreed that Brazil seems to be the most vibrant market for translation rights outside of Europe with advances going into six figures for the right books. And, staying within Latin America, she suggested that Mexico has possibly taken over from Argentina as the largest Spanish language market within this region. She went on to say that; “Generally speaking, after several years of doom and gloom when talking to European publishers, we have now seen revenue from translation rights sharply
12
and emphasised the impact of current activity levels in Turkey which she described as ‘phenomenal’ thanks to a young population that reads in vast quantities and is a ‘buzzing’ market in which some 90% of her list was selling in this year. Further afield she highlighted Nigeria as a market to watch, even though the level of advances paid continued to be relatively modest, and the Arab world where so many new initiatives and trade events are facilitating selling rights there. Indonesia and above all China was another territory which she said was of growing interest and, although there were obvious restrictions and censorship to take into account, that business, history and self-help books as well as some romance continued to sell well.
Picking up on the Asian market, Silvia Serra suggested that: “Whilst journals remain very different to the book trade, China remains one of the most important countries when it comes to potential revenues for journals in translation. And this is thanks to a flourishing pharmaceutical industry.” After China she said that the next biggest country for Wolters Klower in terms of revenue was Korea, again because of a healthy pharmaceutical industry. This was said to be closely followed by India. However, she did stress the need to work in partnership with someone familiar with their individual market and the fact that the Chinese and Korean markets in particular were very bureaucratic and slow moving, requiring the aid of government collaboration. When turning her attention to Brazil she stated: “The journal translation market has been slow on the uptake in recent times, mainly due to the pharmaceutical companies ploughing their budgets into advertising for the aforementioned major events. As such Argentina continues to be the most profitable country for us within the South American market.” On the subject of piracy, James Bennett said the industry needs to help combat this by embracing a range of licensing solutions. He commented: “Imagine universities in developing countries where it’s very easy for one student to buy a text book and others to photocopy the content. If we can provide a licensing solution so that the university can provide these photocopies of this content within the law then this protects the sale of the textbooks and the textbook publishers, many of which are
international publishers based in the UK. This helps the UK market and everyone wins. The publishers, the authors and the students.” Emma House agreed; “Physical piracy often happens in many countries due to lack of availability. So, the more content that can be licensed into those countries the better. If you can provide a legitimate source of the content at a price and in a format that people want to receive it in then that’s a good way of tacking piracy. Emerging markets are usually the ones suggested as having piracy issues but that shouldn’t stop us embracing the available business on offer. And there remains huge potential in these markets for secondary licensing and again this is another form of tackling piracy.” In conclusion Lorella Belli summed up by saying: “The important thing to remember when licensing overseas is to make sure that the people you are selling your rights to are bona fide, that they have a good track record and there are measures in place so if something does go wrong then they can take action. Piracy does still happen in China but ironically no democracy also means that they have one of the most robust systems.”

Based in Hamburg, Germany, and run by an Australian, Rippple Books is a publisher of English language fiction, publishing the kind of books that may normally be ignored, because they are too challenging, experimental and off-kilter, or because they don’t fit in specified genres or follow established structures. This approach to fiction is part of what puts Rippple Books at the cutting-edge of independent publishing. They have also received recognition for creative cover design, run a successful crowdfunding campaign, been an executive producer of a short film and been profiled as an “indie groundbreaking publisher.” Of their seven books published so far, three have won independent publishing awards. They are particularly interested in selling rights to foreign language markets, including Germany, Russia, China, India and Japan. And yes there are three P’s in Rippple; they stand for producer-topublic publishing, because their goal is to connect books with readers.
Zed Books, based in London, is a workers’ collective and political publishing project, committed to the emancipation and equality of all. They create cutting-edge content for a global audience of students, academics, activists and general readers. They successfully licence publishing rights to the Global South markets. Mountain House Publishing is based in Shropshire, UK and came into existence to market ten classic travel books by Bettina Selby - or rather nine books by Bettina and one by her two very literate cats. Bettina Selby travelled alone and by bicycle from Karachi to Khatmandu; the length of the Nile from the Mediterranean to the Mountains of the Moon, and the River Niger to Timbuktu. Now her journeys have a renewed appeal, because they could not be replicated today. In her travelling days there were no mobile phones, no satellite navigation, no means of calling for help. She was on her own, often in very hostile and dangerous country. If you were not a good traveller you were probably a dead traveller. Sappho and Dido, her two cats, had something of the same indominitable spirit in Two Cats Walking. We would like to achieve sales in India, Canada, and the USA.

She believes that magic and true love really do exist, even in a world that can be ugly at times. “I like to play a neverending game of “Imagine If…” Then I write about my fantastical musings and call myself an author. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love storytelling way too much.” Karen is addicted to coffee, chocolate, and complicated happily-ever-afters.
Vincent Eke:

Vincent Eke is a published, passionate author who is writing an exciting series of African folklore stories and other fiction books. His first children’s storybook Mama’s Tale of Kanji - The Turtle’s Shell was inspired by stories he heard growing up as a young child sitting around the fire place. The book has been described as a “charming little fable ... about community, the danger of selfishness, and the importance of sharing”. He has just completed working on his second children’s story book in this series titled Mama’s Tale of Kanji - The Golden Bird. Vincent is interested in working with the right publishers and agents to make his current and future works available to the widest range of consumers worldwide.
Neville Blech:
Neville Blech has spent over 40 years professionally involved in food, wine and travel. He is joint editor of the award winning Wine Behind the Label, the definitive guide to the world’s best wine producers and their wines. Neville qualified as a chartered accountant in 1959 and became passionate about food and wine whilst working in Italy in the early sixties. There he encountered not only his future wife, Sonia, but also 2 litre bottles of “Valpollicella” made in a cantina in the back streets of Milan. He is currently the treasurer of the Circle of Wine Writers organisation, which probably serves him right for being an accountant.
Kerry Harper:
Writing under the pen name Helen Harper, Kerry Harper has self-published eleven novels, including the Blood Destiny series which has sold over 100,000 copies. Kerry is an English teacher currently living abroad in Malaysia. She has always been a book lover, devouring science fiction and fantasy tales when she was a child growing up in Scotland. As a long time reader of urban fantasy, she finally bit the bullet and started developing her own stories, each one rooted in British culture but attaining international audiences. The growth of the genre fascinated her - the mix of reality and fantasy along with strong heroic female characters appealed from the very beginning - and inspired her to write her own.

wrote the poem in 2007, it took roughly three months, but the opening to the poem was written about a year or two earlier during a classical music concert. It popped into my head with the images of the future work - that’s when I threw it down on my program, together with a brief outline, to sit there waiting for me. The work itself is something like a coming of age story of an orphaned girl brought up by a wise, but somewhat unusual, priest who finds her. It’s about her growing up and going in search of herself armed with not much more than her two hands and wit, all set in a pseudo-medieval time. The rest is best saved for the work itself. There is some influence here from the Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain Chronicles, JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, and the historical-fiction book Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross (I was very captivated by the thought of a woman in medieval times being brave enough to dress as a man in order to just learn and then being intelligent enough to go all the way to becoming pope!). Also my - then - amazing co-worker Kermit Mercer had a very significant influence on the friar himself in many ways, to name a few. He’s an amazing person with a life filled with all sorts of adventure; literal adventure, battles (or at least that’s what I understood), far away countries, race car driving, science - he has God’s hands at making things (for the lab and otherwise) and a mind just FULL of amazing literature and stories. He would give me these talks in hopes of keeping me safe from trouble, being old enough to be my grandfather, and some of the more interesting ones I wrote down and well... here’s the friar! It was a lot of fun working with him, and learning from him, and the books he’d share! And opera! If anyone knowing him reads this they’ll understand.
22
Who does Song of Raven appeal to most? I believe that even though it’s written at a level where a school child can understand the meaning of it and enjoy the adventure, an adult could enjoy it. When I was writing it, it was for myself, but during my bus rides to and from work I had a man get curious and “devour” my work as it was being written begging for more. As far as I know only adults have read it, and enjoyed it. So, honestly, anyone open to a good adventure written in a very concise and non-traditional form - begging pardon of the great poet of the past who did exactly that and very well indeed. It has mystery, suspense, horseback riding, swords, hardships, friendships, and a Robin Hood feel to it.
What inspired you to become a poet? I like Shakespeare, Chaucer, Alexander Pushkin and others because they can take a great story and turn it into a page turning song.
Since about 6th grade, I found it so much easier to coherently express my thoughts in a rhyme or a poem than prose. Prose has always been a challenge for me. If it’s not a research paper or something factual on some topic, be it history or science, please do not ask me to write it! Everyone will regret it! I think my first conscious realization that I could write something long and good in poetic form was when I was about 12. My history essay’s opening paragraph ended up being a rhyme and I got flustered that I didn’t have enough time, or enough words - English being my second language - to write the rest of it as a poem. In about 7th grade I started rhyming in speech and had a hard time switching back to “regular talk”, little rhymes would just pop into my head and stay there until written down, I’d be half-asleep and poems would just surface. As for coherently expressing my thoughts in rhyme, my mom edited my research papers, and after reading my finished Song of Raven in 2007, she told me never to write prose again if I could get away with a poem. With poetry you can get away with being concise and bending some rules of grammar.
Which territories would you like to sell into and why? The whole world if I can! With a good translation I believe there are a lot of people who can enjoy it.
What’s next on your writing agenda?
(L-R): Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain Chronicles, JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Donna Woolfolk Cross’s Pope Joan
When I was in medical school in Grenada, the Caribbean, I was writing weekly (then somewhat less frequent) updates of my life to people back home. After two years filled with tons of discoveries, both academic and just plain fun exploring the islands with friends, I moved to New York City
to complete my clinical years of medical school. I had an amazing roommate with whom I did a lot of NYC explorations. So there’s stories about my adventures both in a tropical paradise and the concrete jungle, both in class and in the hospital, some happy, some heart-wrenchingly sad. Some have suggested that I publish it as it has good anecdotes and pictures. So, now I’m trying to fit the four or five years of my past life into one file. Good luck me! It will also have a few month’s worth of my life as an intern (first year resident, a brand new, but untried doctor). There’s also a slew of old poems I’m thinking of putting together into a book and publishing. A few could probably be illustrated and make nice children’s books, I’m already envisioning nice pictures, I just need to find time for it all. There’s another long poem from 2007 when I went with a my scouting camp on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. I was thinking of taking some of the photos from the trip and combining that with the poem... but that’s ALL in Russian. There’s also paintings! I don’t even know where to go to put those into a book of just reproductions. If anyone’s curious there’s a bunch of my photos, drawings, and paintings (mostly acrylic and some water color) on fineartamerica.com/profiles/ katerina-naumenko. So, lots of possible and fun projects to look forward to.

Self-publishing authors share their stories...

T
aking a slight departure from banging the rights and licensing drum too much, let’s explore the wider picture of why more and more authors are looking to self-publish, how they are getting their titles to market and, importantly, how they are monetising their hard work. And who better to contribute to this topic than one of the world’s largest selfpublishing service providers - Amazon.
Amazon: “Since launching, Amazon’s selfpublishing services KDP, CreateSpace and ACX have enabled hundreds of thousands of authors to take their work to market, their way. The option to self-publish in e-book, print and audiobook format allows authors to connect with readers around the world and earn royalties on every sale. “When we were asked [by IPR License] to submit an article on monetising your writing, we thought we’d remain true to form and give a platform for authors to speak for themselves. “Best-selling self-published authors Stephanie Hudson (SH), The Afterlife Saga, Kevin Ashman (KA), The India Sommers Mysteries, SK Quinn (SKQ), The Ivy Lessons, and Paul Pilkington (PP), Emma Holden Trilogy, kindly obliged. Here are their words.”
Why did you decide to selfpublish? PP: It’s an amazing way to connect with readers. Where once publishing was restricted to the lucky few, now opportunities are open for everyone to make their work available to a worldwide audience. You can self-publish in the morning, and by the afternoon, someone on the other side of the planet could be downloading your book and reading it.
KA: After writing my first book in 2011 I managed to get an agent interested but the more I looked into traditional publishing, the more concerned I got regarding loss of control, little if any support and the probability that if the sales were low, my book could be withdrawn from sale with little chance of the rights reverting to me. After so
“I had far too much to say and nobody wanted to hear it” much hard work writing the manuscript, the thought of casting it amongst tens of thousands of others to sink or swim, without any control made me very nervous. I currently earn my living as a full time writer having given up a well remunerated management position in a worldwide company. Since leaving the company I have had more time to explore multiple platforms within Amazon and my income has tripled within the first three months. SKQ: I had a book traditionally published, and wasn’t very well suited to the experience. I had far too much to say and nobody wanted to hear it. Publishers focus on big-name authors who are guaranteed to make them big profits. First-time authors are sort of a bet for them, and one which they’re not going to invest a lot of energy in. When you’re in charge of marketing your book you see first-hand what works and what doesn’t. And it helps you write better books that people want to buy. I would
SK Quinn, author of The Ivy Lessons always recommend self-publishing over seeking out a publisher. You keep much more of the profits and are in touch with the whole process, from start to finish. SH: I guess the simplest way to say why I made the life changing decision to selfpublish is just for that very reason… it completely changed my life. As an everyday person working as a waitress it was always my dream to become a writer but like many others, found the first hurdle to be actually getting noticed. I still find it amazing to this day how not only can you have your book up and selling within 24 hours, ready to download but also how quick it is to create your own paperback version. There is nothing quite like holding your story in your hand and feeling the weight of all that hard work in book form. Without a doubt I would recommend self-publishing to anyone who dreams of writing for a living, receiving a large amount of royalties and also keeping 100% control over your books. After all it was you that put in all the work, so why shouldn’t you get all the say?
What success have you enjoyed so far? KA: Since self-publishing my first book I have written thirteen more books and have enjoyed over a hundred thousand
“without a doubt I would recommend self-publishing to anyone who dreams of writing”

“I’m thankful that I made the right decision”
sales. Without self-publishing services, the chances are that my work would still be unseen by the public. PP: I’ve sold over 300,000 copies of my books since publishing with KDP. The second book in my Emma Holden trilogy, The One You Fear, was named as one of the best Kindle books in 2013 (UK Kindle Store Editor’s Choice). And my standalone novel, Someone to Save You, reached the top 20 of the UK Kindle Store. As a result of my self-publishing success, a deal was secured with Hodder and Stoughton for my Emma Holden trilogy. All three novels were released during 2014. In North America, I continue to self-publish the trilogy through KDP, and it’s still doing well in the charts. My life as an author has transformed beyond all recognition. Instead of writing just for myself, my books now reach a worldwide audience.
SKQ: Selling over a quarter of a million books. SH: I remember it taking over three hours to gather up enough courage to click ‘upload’ but how thankful I am now that I made the right decision. Not only do I now have a large fan base because of it but also have all four of my books now being sold around the world; my first book alone to date has received over 240 five star reviews. But even after experiences like being on the radio, in the newspaper and on TV, none will compare to the day you can finally meet your fans at your own book signing and be given the chance to thank them in person.
Do you have any tips for aspiring authors? KA: Every day I see people who talk about writing, think about writing, blog about writing, plan about writing. Many of these are yet to break through or perhaps make a modest living but

interestingly, the more successful authors seem to be the quieter ones who direct their writing efforts into their next book. Focus your attention on your next work and gradually, the benefits will follow. PP: I do feel that it’s important to consider the issue of branding – so that readers are clear what they are getting when they buy one of your books. Partly this involves careful design of your covers, and thought about your genre and even your book titles. But it’s mostly about the book’s content and style – readers need to know what they are getting when they buy one of your books. When you have a group of readers who know that, and they choose to purchase your new work, then that’s when you know that you’re doing something right.
your head – research what people want to read. SH: My advice to any aspiring authors out there would be first and foremost, to finish your book. Think of the process of writing as a gift and reading a good book is like receiving one but you must first have a finished product before putting it out there ready for readers to enjoy. The next step would be to make sure it is well edited as nobody likes cracks in their gift. And lastly to make sure your gift is wrapped up nicely with the most eye-catching front cover, as we live in a world where the eyes play a large part in deciding what we buy.
“you have full control over licensing your work”
SKQ: So many. But the main one is this – write for a specific audience. Know that audience and what that audience reads and wants. Don’t just write what’s in
value of their work, including licensing options? PP: The great thing about self-publishing is that you have full control over licensing your work. You can publish worldwide, or just in specific countries. And you can set the price across many different territories. You can also choose to publish exclusively with Amazon (through KDP Select). It may be that you decide that KDP Select, and the opportunities it brings in terms of promotions, is the way to go. But the good thing is that it’s up to you what you decide, and you can change your mind. Traditionally published authors don’t get such choice. YOU HAVE COMPLETED TWO BOOKS, CAN YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT?
T
he Analyst storyline spans four months, looking in on a bustling Victorian metropolis, where Adam Balchard, forensic/ medical researcher, is deeply involved in the multiple duties of forensic analysis for Scotland Yard and intelligence work for the War Office, as well as psychoanalysing the problems of his own mental turmoil. Thus he suffers from a lack of breathing space through taking on too diverse a workload. He is haunted throughout the story by mind-searing memories of a tragic event involving the death of a dearly loved one. These flashbacks, triggered by appropriate moments of mental association are profoundly disturbing to Balchard, on account of their being accompanied by irrational feelings of nausea. That Balchard is unable to put a name or reason to such feelings is most unsettling to his scientifically disciplined mentality. All the while, ‘other things’ are lurking deep down in the dark
vault of the subconscious - knocking, knocking, knocking in their anxious effort for cathartic release. His sanity, therefore, is forever on a downhill shift.
We asked Scottish crime writer Brandon Rolfe to discuss his writing process, his experience with self-publishing and his new novel The Analyst - a beautifully descriptive psychological thriller set in Victorian London.
In Countdown To Doomsday, Jihadi terrorists have assembled four 15-megaton nuclear bombs, courtesy of Russian training and the provision of uranium-238 isotope from the rare radio-active actinide series needed for implementing nuclear explosion, in a fully synchronised programme in a sixty hour countdown to produce a ‘chain reaction’ of cataclysmic devastation.
BRANDON ROLFE:
In the final anaylsis... 28
THEY ARE VERY DIFFERENT IN TERMS OF PERIOD SETTING AND BACKGROUND, HOW DIFFERENT WAS THE RESEARCH PROCESS FOR THEM? Since The Analyst is of a past era, it follows that material needed for the story was not readily available at one’s fingertips; nor could it be obtained any more than it could be witnessed in today’s daily life round about, near or far. So other than the scant notes that I could gather on that period, I had to rely on what I knew, which was science and medicine; so that had to be the main theme running through the book. As I also have a strong interest in military things, researching for Countdown To Doomsday was much easier. Today’s society is a very much a science-minded one, where the public loves great outpourings of technical details that make for realism in films, books, or dramas.
YOUR CAREER SPANNED CLINICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL & INTELLIGENCE FIELDS, HOW HAVE THESE EXPERIENCES HELPED IN THE WRITING PROCESS? Since early schooldays I have always had a strong penchant for science and things and people involved in the scientific field, especially that of work in laboratories. Hence my being attracted into the medical field and seeing things through a medical scientific mind. Hence, again, we have in The Analyst, a nineteenth century story with a strong scientific vein breaking through the otherwise Gothic background darkness of poverty and squalor. The central character is a forensic scientist working under the pressure of diverse workloads as well as very tight schedules demanded by these varied assignments.
Somewhat reminiscent of when, immediately after graduation, I served my Intern Year in the hospital that had the second largest ophthalmology/ ophthalmic outpatients’ department in the UK. This meant working amidst a cacophony of discordant patients’ conversations, the din of which was so intense as to give me headache over the first week, my mind having been so unprepared for it. This
see to be the book’s central character’s simplest, yet greatest, problem.
anywhere. Since I’m no longer a ‘spring chicken’, I cannot afford to wait a lifetime.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SELF PUBLISH, AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BENEFITS OR DRAWBACKS?
I decided that the sure way to see it turned into a printed works available for public reading was to go ahead and publish it solely by my own effort. The Analyst was never turned down because I went straight into self-publishing, instead of going to a publisher.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of new literary works are piling up on publishers’ desks each week. And this is only the synopsis form that lands on
“A STRONG SCIENTIFIC VEIN BREAKING THROUGH A GOTHIC BACKGROUND” bother wasn’t lessened any by the fact that owing to that year’s heavy outbreak of flu that caused a fair number of doctors and consultants to be off sick, leaving me to virtually handle the workload mostly on my own. Balchard’s ‘searching for things’ aspect must surely lend itself both from my probing peoples’ minds to find solutions to their inner problems and from my later spell as an investigator. When treating psychoneurotic patients, you appreciate how it is the ‘little things’, what the ‘normal’ person would scornfully dismiss as ‘trivia’, that are the root of the patient’s disturbance. This you also
those desks – the publishers will not accept full manuscripts – they’re too busy. Even the largest publishing houses have their heavy work trying to give as much attention to as many synopses as they can manage. (Of course, there is also the business sense of sticking with the firmly established best-selling authors they have and turning away, unread, the works of newcomers.) You know this when your synopsis is returned in its original unopened envelope. I, myself, had Countdown To Doomsday returned to me six times, two of these unread. I got the message that one could wait a long time and never get
Self-publishing means higher royalties, whereas normal publishing allows wider publicity/marketing. HOW HIGH DOES THE DOMESTIC/INTERNATIONAL LICENSING OF YOUR WORK FEATURE IN FUTURE PLANS? My books have received glowing appraisal from critics, so I very much want my works to be seen, read, and appreciated by a greater volume of people. I value this even more than the thought of the works bringing in a greater amount of money. Hence I hope to extend the range of licensing my books to that covering the globe – to anyone interested, be it publisher, film/ TV company/dramatist, who can put the books into greater heightened production.

Helping Authors to Reach More Readers
Imagine if you could push a magic button and make your next book release rise higher in the bestseller lists... Well, this magic button is real. It's called an ebook pre-order...
30
What is an ebook pre-order? An ebook pre-order is an advance book listing at the ebook retailer. Pre-orders allow readers to place a reservation for your book before it officially goes on sale. The reader’s credit card won’t be charged until the book is released. Just a few years ago, ebook pre-orders weren’t an option for self-published authors. In the last year, however, most of the major ebook retailers have opened up pre-orders to self-published authors, and by doing so they’ve given writers yet another reason to hold onto their worldwide rights. At Smashwords, in the past year alone, dozens of authors have hit the bestseller lists of retailers and traditional media by leveraging the power of pre-orders thanks to some pioneering preorder strategies.
Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords (pictured below), looks at why holding onto your rights can help authors make the most of ebook pre-orders and reach a larger audience.
Planning Your Pre-order The further in advance of your release date your book is listed as a pre-order, the more time you have to accumulate orders for the first-day pop in the charts. At least four to eight weeks of pre-order runway is recommended – longer if you can budget it. To understand the critical importance of a long runway, take a look at how accumulated orders can add up. If you have a three-month runway (90 days), and you average one order a day at a given retailer you’ll have 90 orders by the time your book goes on sale. At iBooks, Barnes & Noble and Kobo, 90 orders will probably land you in the top 100 bestseller list for most genres and categories. Five orders a day would get you 450 orders, enough to probably land you in the top 10 for your genre or category and top 40 store-wide bestseller lists at most stores. Ten orders a day would get you 900 accumulated orders, enough to land you in the top 10 store-wide bestseller lists at most retailers, and possibly even #1 in some stores.

the five biggest benefits of ebook pre-orders 1.
Capture the order in advance Authors are usually working on their next book, and they communicate their progress to fans on their blog, Facebook, Twitter and private mailing lists. Pre-orders allow you to capture the reader’s order at the moment you have their attention and interest.
2.
Pre-orders enable advance buzz-building Things coming in the future are often more interesting than what’s already out. Pre-orders allow you to build reader anticipation leading up to your official release.
32
3.
Fast track to bestseller lists This is the ultimate magic of preorders. The bestseller lists of all major retailers rank books on unit sales. Their ‘sales rank algorithms’ weigh sales made in the most recent 12-24 hours more heavily than earlier sales. At iBooks, Barnes & Noble and Kobo, the accumulated sales made before your book’s release date are credited to your book’s sales the day it officially goes on sale, making it seem as though you made all the sales on the first day. This causes your book to appear higher in the charts and, as customers use bestseller lists to find their next read, your book becomes more visible to readers.
4.
Same-day availability at multiple retailers By delivering your book in advance, your book will go on sale the same day at multiple retailers. The advance delivery of your book to retailers gives them more time to receive, process and load your book. Since your existing fans are the most likely to order pre-orders, they’ll be the first to receive your book, the first to read it and the first to review it.
5.
Increased merchandising opportunities If your book is available for pre-order, you will enjoy more merchandising opportunities. When readers are viewing any of your books, the store will display your pre-order alongside your other titles. A preorder also increases the odds that the retailer’s merchandising team, who monitor pre-order accumulations, will feature your book. If they see high levels of order accumulation, the retailer has greater confidence to promote your pre-order because the accumulated orders are a direct measure of reader interest.
Four Tips to Market & Promote Your Pre-order 1. Plan an aggressive, multi-week, multi-part marketing campaign If you’re doing an eight-week pre-order runway, plan a different buzz-building promotion for each week. Do contests, chapter reveals, giveaways, and blog tours.
Final thoughts on ebook pre-orders ebook pre-orders are one of the most powerful merchandising tools available to self-published authors. These tools help you fully exploit your rights just like a professional publisher. Behind every successful preorder is a well-planned and well-executed pre-order strategy and a passionate author. Your objective with each pre-order is to make your next book launch more rewarding than your last. Sales and platform-building is all about incremental steps. Whether pre-orders give you a small or a massive benefit, each provides a stepping stone to the next level of success.
Smashwords is the world’s largest distributor of selfpublished ebooks. Over 90,000 indie authors around the world publish over 300,000 books at Smashwords. Learn more about Smashwords at www.smashwords.com
2. Mobilise your fans as your street team As you think about fun promotion ideas, do things that incentivise your fans to spread the word. For example, consider creating a ‘Street Team Acknowledgements’ section in the back-matter of your book, and let your fans know you’ll include the names of the first 50 or 100 people who take an action.
3. Offer special pricing on your pre-order Let’s say you plan to offer your next novel at £2.99 or USD $3.99 As a reward for your best fans who place a pre-order, price the pre-order at £1.99 or $2.99, and then promise to return the book to its normal price after it’s released.
4. Leverage your other books to promote your pre-order Once your new pre-order is listed, revisit your backlist and update your other titles so they mention the upcoming preorder. Also link Upcoming Releases to your Table of Contents, and if you have a sample of your pre-order book put that in the back-matter of your other books as well.
