Wrap up warm and enjoy a themed guided walk followed by refreshments and a relaxed chat with your guide in one of Ipswich’s fantastic local cafes
All walks start at the Tourist Information Centre in St Stephen’s Church and will keep on the move as much as possible to keep warm! The cost is £9 per person per walk (including refreshments) All places must be booked in advance through the Tourist Information Centre or online at www.ipswichregent.com

Wednesday 9th January, 2pm BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Many of Ipswich's ancient buildings have seen numerous changes of ownership and use over time. We discover some of the history and characters that have been part of these buildings - many of which we walk past every day with little idea of what has gone on behind their doors. Friday 18th January, 2pm A TUDOR WALK FROM TOWN TO COUNTRYSIDE Join us as we dare to venture outside the North gate and through the old town ramparts as we hear about Tudor bad boy Edmund Withipoll, builder of Christchurch Mansion.
Wednesday 30th January, 2pm I’VE NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE Take a leisurely walk exploring the fascinating features of Ipswich’s historic town centre, from dates to decorative details, hidden doorways and stunning statues. There is bound to be something that you’ve never noticed before!
Thursday 7th February, 2pm DICKENS IN IPSWICH Celebrate Charles Dickens' birthday by visiting some of the places in Ipswich that he wrote about. We end our walk over a warming cup of tea as your guide recites from one of Dickens’ major works.
Thursday 14th February, 1.45pm LOVE IS IN THE AIR On Valentine’s Day discover the stories of a Tudor Queen who married for love, a scandalous royal divorce, the fate of some star-crossed lovers and an arranged marriage which went horribly wrong. We end at Christchurch Mansion to view The Kiss and Tell Exhibition, featuring Rodin’s statue The Kiss.
Tuesday 19th February, 2pm QUEEN VICTORIA WAS NOT AMUSED… When Prince Albert visited Ipswich he was so impressed that he wouldn’t stop talking about it - much to the annoyance of Queen Victoria! This walk explores some areas visited by the Prince in 1851 and investigates Ipswich’s place at the forefront of scientific developments of the day. Wednesday 6th March, 2pm IPSWICH ENTERTAINS Take a trip down 'Memory Lane' and hear about Ipswich’s entertainment venues, its theatres, dance and music halls, and cinemas.
Friday 8th March, 2pm REMARKABLE WOMEN OF IPSWICH Celebrate International Women’s Day and join us to hear about the upbeat stories of Ipswich Suffragettes, war workers, famous writers and Tudor traders and their exceptional achievements often gained against great odds.
Tuesday 19th March, 2pm WHAT’S IN A NAME? Ever wondered why the Museum isn’t on Museum St? Come on a stroll as we learn about the stories behind the names of many streets and buildings in central Ipswich. Wednesday 27th March, 2pm RAGS, BONES, TEA AND CAKE Explore the area of Ipswich that Frank Grace describes in his excellent book 'Rags and Bones' including the areas around Fore St, Grimwade St, Duke St, John St and Myrtle Rd.
Thursday 4th April, 2pm PRIORIES, FRIARIES, CHURCHES AND CHAPELS Ipswich was a major religious centre during the Middle Ages. Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims to visit some of the town’s medieval churches and other interesting sites. Wednesday 17th April, 2pm IPSWICH MEDICS Stroll around sites associated with inspirational medical men and women and their pioneering advances, including Ipswich's Nobel Laureate and our first female doctor.
Tuesday 23rd April, 2pm A DRAGON HUNT FOR ST GEORGE’S DAY Celebrate St George’s Day with a hunt for dragons and other fabulous beasts that can be found all around central Ipswich.
Tuesday 30th April, 2pm SCIENTIFIC IPSWICH Explore sites associated with the theory of evolution, advances in brain science and developments for arthritis, and discover how the founders of Ransomes brought some of the earliest scientific conferences to Ipswich.
Wednesday 2nd October, 2pm AUTHORS, ARTISTS, POETS AND PERFORMERS This town centre walk explores Ipswich’s artistic associations, from travelling players to theatre and music hall superstars, discovering links with Geoffrey Chaucer, David Garrick, Thomas Gainsborough and many more on the way. Wednesday 9th October, 2pm THEY CAME, THEY SAW, THEY STAYED HERE Explore the story of immigration to Ipswich from earliest times to the 21st Century. Some came to conquer, some to escape religious persecution, and others to seek a better life.
Friday 18th October, 2pm DOCKS TO DESIGNER DEVELOPMENT Discover the changing face of Ipswich Waterfront, from its historic beginnings to the creation of the wet dock, exploring DanceEast, Isaacs on the Quay and the James Hehir building. Tuesday 22nd October, 2pm MARTYRS AND VICTIMS You may think you know about our martyrs but how do they link to our most famous son? Burial grounds feature in the walk along with innocent sounding places like the Cornhill!
Friday 8th November, 2pm SIGNS AND SYMBOLS Seahorses, flying oxen and green men are just a few of the exotic symbols to be found on Ipswich buildings. Come on an afternoon walk to discover their origins and their meanings. Thursday 14th November, 2pm OUR GLORIOUS CHURCHES Ipswich is blessed with a large number of excellent churches. Visit some of the most important as we consider the life and times of our great churchman, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey.
