CYCLO-CROSS Following the success of hosting the British Championships in Ipswich in early January 2012, the first international cyclo-cross championship to take place in Britain since the world championships were staged in Leeds 20 years ago, came to Ipswich in November 2012. Cycling enthusiasts from across Europe flocked to Ipswich to witness the first international cyclo-cross event on these shores since 1992. They were treated to 12 thrilling races, with the European contests taking centre-stage on Saturday and the British National rounds providing plenty of entertainment yesterday. Competitors from Belgian, Hungary and Italy fought it out around the testing, muddy, undulating 3.2km track as devoted fans braved the rain and mud to show their support.

SPORT RELIEF MILE Friends, families and work colleagues joined together to rise to the challenge of the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile helping raise money to transform lives here in the UK and across the world's poorest countries. As well as running the mile, competitors, family and friends also had the chance to try different sports in the “sports interactive zone”, which featured local sports clubs. Over £30,000 was raised from this event.

JUBILEE WEEKEND Attendees firstly enjoyed the Big Jubilee Lunch on the Cornhill for a piazza-style dining experience, with service from cafes, pubs and restaurants, along with music and street entertainment. 20 community parties were held, including a family picnic and entertainment on Christchurch Park Mansion Lawn On Monday 4th June, the Lighting of the Beacon Service in Christchurch Park featured a Parade in the Park, a Drumhead Service and a Cadets Parade, followed by the lighting of the beacon and a fireworks finale. Ipswich was just one of 42 towns and cities taking part in the celebrations.

C R A S H O F T H E E LY S I U M (an Ip-art event) The Crash of the Elysium presented an interactive spectacular that brought people from all over the region to Ipswich. Presented by Manchester International Festival, the London 2012 Festival, the New Wolsey Theatre and Ipswich Borough Council. Created by Punchdrunk, 'The Crash of The Elysium' is a live Doctor Who adventure in which the audience is the star of the show. The production provided a unique interactive experience with its audience. This was their story, their mission, the audience were the heroes with no stage and no division between the world of the audience and the world of the show. Every show was different with no individual adventure ever being repeated.

I P S W I C H A R T S F E S T I VA L (IP-ART) Ip-art is Ipswich’s annual summer arts festival with an exciting programme of visual arts, performing arts, literature, film and music. Across a multitude of venues and over 70 different events, every year Ip-art aims to fascinate, delight, intrigue and stimulate, bringing the town alive with culture.

S P I E G E LT E N T (an Ip-art event) An amazing mirrored tent in the glorious Christchurch Park this summer, packed full of daytime workshops and spectacular evening events which were absolutely unmissable! A fantastic programme of workshops and performances in Christchurch Park, presented by DanceEast and Ipswich Borough Council, including; Baby Boogie Disco, Burlesque, Hip Hop and Tango. Performances by John Bramwell, Bo Nanafana and chart toppers ‘Sam and the Womp’, as well as silent movies and much more, provided a spectacular line-up, in a beautiful venue.

GLOBAL RHYTHM (an Ip-art event) An array of live entertainment, art and food from across the world guarantees that Global Rhythm brings you a colourful and exciting celebration of worldwide cultures. Showcasing music and dance from South America and the Caribbean to Africa and beyond, Global Rhythm provides the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax and get into the festival spirit. The carnival parade brings communities together and showcases their own carnival creations, developed during a series of costume design workshops held earlier in the year.

LAST NIGHT OF THE JUBILEE PROMS (an Ip-art event) The glorious setting of Christchurch Park provided a dramatic backdrop to a spectacular summer's evening concert. Friends and families gathered to enjoy picnics before the performance and raised a glass at this unique celebration that will never be forgotten - the quintessential British summer event.

I P S W I C H M U S I C D AY 2012 saw the 21st anniversary of Ipswich Music Day, one of the largest free one-day music events in the UK. This annual event features a selection of the brightest talents to be found in Suffolk and East Anglia and spans almost every type of music. The music is performed across five stages and the Spiegletent throughout the day (as well as classical performances in the mansion and nearby St Margaret’s Church). There is plenty of other entertainment on offer; fairground rides, children’s activities, stalls and a variety of food. It’s the perfect setting for an enjoyable, exciting day out with family and friends. This event is only possible with the support of all our partners on the day and we would like to thank the Ipswich Star, ICR FM and CSV Media, Town 102, BBC Radio Suffolk, Heart FM and Grapevine Magazine.

OPEN AIR CINEMA (an Ip-art event) MAMMA MIA & CARS 2 Hollywood came to the people of Ipswich as a 46 square metre L.E.D screen arrived in the beautiful setting of Christchurch Park. Face painting, dancing, singing and live entertainments to create a unique cinema experience.

O LY M P I C T O R C H R E L AY Ipswich was chosen as one of just 66 local communities to host an Evening Celebration Site as the Olympic Flame carried out its journey around Great Britain. The evening featured spectacular content from sponsors Coca-Cola, Samsung and Lloyds TSB, as well as local performers from DanceEast. Audiences of 50,000 lined the streets of Ipswich to welcome the flame as it sailed up the river and then travelled through the streets of the town, before being carried onto the stage in Christchurch Park where the cauldron was lit. People were able to enjoy local entertainment along the route and take part in sports workshops and many other activities within the park itself.

INDIAN SUMMER MELA (an Ip-art event) Working with the Ipswich & Suffolk Indian Association, Ipswich Borough Council celebrated South Asian culture through stunning and colourful performances of Indian dance, songs, poetry and music. Featuring an exciting market place, Indian food village, yoga and Bollywood workshops the Indian Mela is fast becoming a major attraction in the East of England.

MARITIME IPSWICH Maritime Ipswich graced the shores of Ipswich Waterfront for the weekend of the 18th and 19th August 2012. The major twoday celebration welcomed more than 60,000 people to the Waterfront to celebrate all things nautical, including historical re-enactments, dance performances, craft stalls, live traditional music, fireworks and much more.

JLS IN CONCERT The biggest boy band phenomenon of a generation, JLS played six massive outdoor concerts across the UK this summer in an epic journey around the country, including Chantry Park in Ipswich. Aston, Marvin, OritsĂŠ and JB backflipped their way into the nation's hearts once more.

LARKING GOWEN IPSWICH H A L F - M A R AT H O N The Larking Gowen Ipswich Half-Marathon 2012 saw 1,500 runners take on the 13.1-mile course in and around Ipswich and helped to raise money for many charities.

M U LT I C U LT U R A L D AY An annual event held in Alexandra Park to celebrate Ipswich’s diversity. Visitors enjoy food from around the world, traditional music, dance, sport and a range of information stalls. The event is organised by the Bangladeshi Support Centre and aims to bring the community together in Ipswich, regardless of their background, race, gender or faith.

T O U R O F B R I TA I N Between 35,000 and 40,000 people watched the prestigious Tour of Britain Grand depart in Ipswich on September 9th. Attended by the world’s top cyclists fresh from their Olympic successes, including Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, this first leg of the annual Tour of Britain race began on the Ipswich Waterfront, and travelled through the town centre, Christchurch Park and out through the east of Ipswich, continuing its journey through East Anglia.

SKYRIDE Mums, dads, children and grandparents took part in the six-kilometre ride in one of a series of nationwide events aimed at getting more than a million people cycling regularly in the UK by 2013.

H O M E C O M I N G PA R A D E Thousands of people lined the streets of a chilly town centre to cheer the troops of the First Battalion of The Royal Anglian Regiment. The heroes, known as the Vikings, were exercising their right to march through the town after returning home from a gruelling tour of Afghanistan. Cheers rang out for a march past of veterans and then the Vikings, led by the Prince of Wales Band. Cameras clicked, flags waved and loud cheers rang out across the Cornhill.

CHRISTMAS In 2012 Christmas was celebrated in style. Starting with Ipswich’s first ever Christmas Market held in the town centre. The markets offered four days of entertainment, quality food and festive goods. The market was opened by the arrival of Father Christmas sailing up the river on barge ‘Victor’ and then parading through the town on a vintage open top fire engine. The festivities then continued with the switch on of Ipswich’s amazing new and widely discussed Christmas Lights and tree. With performances by several local groups, as well as the cast of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the Military Wives.
