City of Gold Coast | Palm Beach Shoreline Project Palm Beach is one of the most vulnerable beaches under threat of coastal erosion. City of Gold Coast engineers developed a plan to nourish the beach with 47,000 m3 of clean sand then constructed an artificial reef for further protection.

Sunshine Coast Council | Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion This complex project involved an array of environmental considerations with a 175 hectare footprint in a coastal location abutted by a National Park. This is the first time a local government authority in Queensland has delivered a new international standard aviation facility.

Capestone Lake | Moreton Bay Regional Council A pumped saltwater exchange system draws water from the adjacent creek with flows to several discharge points turning over its volume in a 30 day cycle. The lake is the first of its kind in south east Queensland and provides flood immunity for the Capestone Southern Precinct.

Mackay Regional Council & Whitsunday Regional Council | Mirani Water Recycling Facility / Bowen Sewerage Treatment Plant Plant The Mirani Water Recycling Facility (pictured) is a modern state of the art treatment facility that plays a critical role in the prevention of environmental harm to our Great Barrier Reef. Through regional collaboration, efficient and effective outcomes resolved issues for the townships of Mirani and Marian in the Pioneer Valley and for Bowen with the upgraded Bowen Sewerage Treatment Plant.

Toowoomba Regional Council | Railway Goods Shed Restoration Complex engineering design and construction challenges were encountered restoring this 1880’s railway goods shed requiring the application of innovative solutions. The outcome is this unique re-purposed 4,000 m2 events venue in the centre of a thriving historical Railway Parklands.

Livingstone Shire Council | Statue Bay – Cyclone Marcia Reconstruction Works In February 2015, Cyclone Marcia caused severe damage to the steep escarpment above the coastal Scenic Highway at Statue Bay. The $25 million reconstruction involved construction of a mechanically stabilised embankment with ocean protection wall and stabilisation of the cliff face with 15m soil nails and shotcrete surfacing. This damage-prone road has been transformed into an expansive, safe multi-user thoroughfare.

Cairns Regional Council | Shields Street Heart This project revitalised the Cairns city centre, attracting more visitors and residents to the CBD. Contemporary lighting and public art celebrating Indigenous culture is integrated into the streetscape while visitors are entertained with Australia’s first permanent outdoor inground video projection.

Department of Transport and Main Roads | Beames Brook Bridge, Burketown This replacement bridge offers year-round safe access for communities in the Gulf of Carpentaria also ensuring freight movements throughout this remote area. It was successfully delivered in partnership with local councils and Burketown and Doomadgee Indigenous communities.

Brisbane City Council | Smart Poles 20 poles have been installed throughout Brisbane to collect data on how the city functions. Fibre optic cabling or mobile telecommunications provide for the high speed transfer of data to an analytic server and central management system dashboard establishing Brisbane as a New World City.

City of Gold Coast | Kurrawa Seawall Queensland has an extensive and dynamic coastline with some of the most beautiful iconic beaches and reefs in the world requiring a comprehensive coastal management plan. In 2020, IPWEAQ introduced a new excellence award for Coastal Engineering which was won by the City of Gold Coast for its Palm Beach shoreline restoration program (see January).
