Celebrating Excellence in Interior Design
The annual awards program of the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) recognizes the exceptional work of qualified interior designers, while also raising public awareness of the power and effect of interior design among the Ontario public. Interior design is more than aesthetics. The qualified Registered interior designer finds creative solutions for interior environments that enhance the quality of life of their occupants. The award winning projects showcased in this magazine demonstrate how the expertise of ARIDO members enhances the spaces where we live, work and play. Projects can only qualify for judging where a Registered member of ARIDO was the lead interior designer on the project. Each entry is judged on its own merit by esteemed representatives from business, media and design. In their submissions, entrants are asked to relay existing design elements, budget and project objectives, strategies employed, overall creativity, examples of project results, and sustainability and collaborative elements. A panel of five judges selected 29 projects to receive awards in 6 categories. The winning projects include 2 Awards of Excellence and 27 Awards of Merit.
About ARIDO
2017 ARIDO Awards Judges
The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) is the only self-regulatory organization for interior designers in Ontario. Since its inception in 1934, the Association has played a vital role in the interior design industry by protecting the rights of the interior design profession and regulating the interior design profession in Ontario in the best interests of the public.
Paul DaCunha, OAA, ARIDO Paul DaCunha Architect Inc. Jana Macalik, ARIDO OCAD
ARIDO obtained Private legislation, Bill Pr6, in 1999 which grants Registered Members who meet ARIDO standards exclusive use of the title Interior Designer in Ontario.
Naji Mourani, ARIDO St. Michael’s Hospital Bryan Stone, ARIDO Stone & Associates
By giving legal standing to the designation of Interior Designer, the government bestows on the title a measure of respect and recognizes the high standards of education, training and formal examination that professional interior designers meet. The act also safeguards consumers by ensuring that members are fully qualified and possess the most current qualifications. Any person in Ontario who is not a Registered member of the ARIDO is guilty of an offense if he or she uses the designation Interior Designer or ARIDO.
Isabelle Talbot, ARIDO,IDC Ray Inc.
The more than 1,100 Registered members of ARIDO have expertise in a wide range of sectors, including corporate, residential, retail, hospitality, health care and institutional. In total, ARIDO has more than 3,000 Registered, Intern, Educator and Student members.

PROJECT OF THE YEAR
PENGUIN SHOP
Penguin Random House Canada had in mind a retail environment offering “book super-fans and loyal book buyers an exclusive high-quality experience, with access to authors and creatives, product knowledge, and brand advantage. Inspired by the super-fan customer and the bookshelf he/she takes pride in, the designer devoted one wall of the store to a quirky oversize bookshelf, solving multiple needs of storage, product and merchandised display, and instore branding; further, the oversized books can be pulled out by customers, supporting and encouraging their journey of discovery, as they delve deeper both literally and metaphorically. Tempting the passerby to stop is a combination of mini-bookcases and tables on coasters that break the lease line and spill out in front of the store. Inside, the super-flexible space allows for constantly evolving merchandise, encouraging the target customer to return regularly.

TORONTO WINE DISTRIBUTOR
Expanding its growing business, a high-end wine distributor leased 5,500 square feet of space in an adjacent two-storey heritage building on the western edge of Toronto to fit 30 open workstations, a boardroom, three meeting rooms, a wine-tasting servery and secure wine storage. The character of the former industrial building shines through with the exposed, existing Douglas fir, brick and steel; added to the mix are painted drywall, sand-blasted glass, cold-pressed steel and polished concrete. The floor plan deliberately separates public and private. The focal point of the office is a raised podium, accessed via ramp, consisting of a meeting space opening onto a tasting area; with its wine display of sparkling, acrylic floating shelves, the jewel-like pace is ideal for client entertaining and hosting. Throughout the office are examples of sleek metal fabrication: framed openings; pivoting doors; fin-like ramp edges; and a shelf that wraps the corner of the telephone room.

AVENUE RESTAURANT RENOVATION
After much back and forth with the City of Vaughan, the owner of Avenue Cibi e Vini – located in the village of Kleinberg – was granted an expansion to the front of the building, at that time serving as an outdoor patio. He also wanted to up the sophistication quotient, moving the restaurant from a casual purveyor of pasta and pizza to a more sophisticated venue with a downtown feel. The designer created a coffered, mirrored ceiling with indirect lighting; a retracting glass wall on the south and west elevation was incorporated, allowing for an open concept in the summer months. A large-format graphic image – proving a wow factor – draws the eye into the space, warm with wood walls and flooring. Architectural lighting (iconic fixtures from Moooi) creates a sparkling grace note. Chairs and table linens, left pristine white, add a classic note.

AVIVA DIGITAL GARAGE
In moving its business from a traditional insurer to a purveyor of digital offerings, Aviva sought a space that would reflect the change. Everything about Aviva Digital Garage reads as a radical departure from the traditional risk-averse insurance company. Working groups now come together in a variety of settings to collaborate on projects; embracing the new corporate culture reflected in the design, staff members feel liberated to take risks. Open plenum ceilings, graphic branding and an unexpected selection of furniture and seating – plus the provision of a bright and vibrant town hall space – not only position Aviva squarely against every global player in the industry but also act as a tool for attracting top talent. What’s more, the Digital Garage plays host to pitch days, mentorship and innovation exchanges with its start-up incubator partners across the city.

Moving to a new two-floor space allowed Bentall Kennedy – a Toronto-born and -bred firm that had been acquired by a larger organization – to update its image while remaining true to its roots. Aiming for timeless sophistication, the designer started with Canadian building materials, creating a shell of oak, steel and glass. Details include: Paul Smith fabric on bench and chair coverings; a pair of colourful phone booths; and heavy communal furniture in marble and metal. Fully integrated meeting rooms and touchdown spots reduce the need for travel. A busy stairway, connecting the top and bottom floors, opens onto the 11th-floor lobby: a vibrant and welcoming space for clients. To offset the loss of private office space, senior leadership was provided with a lake view, unique to the Toronto waterfront. A corridor along one window ensures universal access to sunlight and allows views to be ex-perienced by all.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS:
In relocating over 700 employees to a single location in downtown Toronto, the full-size Canadian law firm sought to enhance workplace flexibility and functionality, while at the same time optimizing space efficiency. At each phase of the design process, the firm had its say. The result is an office that balances client-facing and focused collaborative work with furniture and technology that promotes document sharing and working together. The designer made use of brand colours to create an elegant and modern palette. The conference floor hosts meetings and events of all sizes, via a multi-purpose room that leverages the entire east side of the floor for large client events. Employee cafés are a new amenity, promoting corporate culture and providing casual collision spaces. Uniform office sizes and streamlined workstations optimize personal space; new technology supports mobility and communication.
Emerge inspired and curious.

BOOKING.COM TORONTO CALL CENTRE
The web-based company entrusted the design team to create a highly inspired and collaborative customer-service centre located in downtown Toronto that would attract culturally diverse talent. The resulting space incorporates a vibe of global travel, while also paying homage to the home city. Each area is designed to be “a city within a city,” with defined routes, areas for work, places to meet up, and spaces for play and relaxation. A “Downtown/Out of Town” concept mixes known Toronto urban traits with cottagecountry living. Each floor has a Canadianainspired cabin, using reclaimed wood planks, housing copy and coffee/water stations; modern Muskoka chairs are a grace note. A colourful Canteen comprises a large prep space, mini-market and large communal tables, as well as a lounge and games area.

CANON CANADA HEADQUARTERS SHOWROOM
One of the main requirements for the Canon Canada Headquarters was a 4,800-sq.-ft. showroom space: not only would it feature all Canon product lines for distributors and end users, it needed to be easily recon-figurable to accommodate product changes, as well as large gatherings and events. The end result communicates the brand’s values of clarity and precision. The dramatic, tunnel-like entrance to the showroom is defined by black metal panels with precise cutouts to accommodate a glowing Canon logo, interactive digital screens and a gallery display; the dark interior then opens up into an airy, naturally lit space defined by wood ceilings and light-coloured quartz floors. A central meeting hub incorporates a large suspended media wall that is adaptable to accommodate various group sizes.

A leader in the real estate industry, CBRE seized the opportunity to showcase its expertise by building a state-of-the-art workplace at its Canadian headquarters in downtown Toronto. A combination of spaces – individual and collaborative, open and private, formal and informal – provide employees with choice in terms of how, when and where they work. The lobby signage, lobby design and media wall incorporate CBRE’s new branding; an internal connecting staircase vertically integrates business units while encouraging spontaneous collaboration. Six types of different workspaces support a wide variety of work styles and meeting types. Infrastructure is in place to support the long-term growth of the company, and to support flexibility for employees: multipurpose, modular solutions “future proof” the space. Centrally located, a lunchroom serves as a community hub.

Well-established firm D+H has dramatically evolved in recent years from a financial document printing company to a global provider of financial technology solutions: its new headquarters needed to reflect that evolution. The company’s mandate to allow a greater degree of mobility to staff through a work-from-home program called for an office with 20 per cent fewer workstations than staff, plus space to host clients, industry partners and staff as a whole for large events. Low panel stations with a small footprint and workbenches with minimal storage fit the bill. Telephone rooms and small, closed meeting spaces provide acoustic and visual privacy for heads down work. Inboard executive work spaces double as team rooms. A Client Innovation Centre and Café on a separate floor functions as a multi-purpose gathering space. The wooden bridge ceiling feature, with its various articulations and bends, represents the global connection that D+H provides.

EMERALD HILLS LEISURE CENTRE Located in Alberta’s Strathcona County, the centre includes a six-lane, 25-metre lap pool; adjustable-floor therapy pool for seniors aqua fit; tot pool; whirlpool and steam room; along with a fully transparent gender-neutral universal change room. Materials and finishes had to suit the corrosive, humid conditions of the pool hall, and provide acoustics and ease of maintenance. Glazing is located low at deck level for views to landscaped areas; on the front elevation, it is located high in order to bounce light off the ceiling structure, resulting in maximum low-glare lighting distribution. The geometry and material of the exterior are translated to the interior, developing clear ceiling and floor-plane divisions, simplifying views, creating way-finding strategies and allowing for accessibility. The ceiling is detailed and modular, allowing the facility manager to replace tiles with ease.

FRESENIUS KABI CANADA In relocating from an outdated, high-rise office tower in Toronto, Fresenius Kabi Canada was looking for an inspired alternative to re-engage staff and attract prized Millennials. The resulting west-end office is bright and open, with 15-foot steel deck, high perimeter windows and a view of green space; a total of 18 bookable and drop-in meeting rooms, lounges and collaborative areas are a welcome trade-off for private offices. The design reflects the Canadian location of this international healthcare company. Clad with wood, the entrance to the main boardroom and learning centre takes on a sculptural form; focal points, these two areas anchor both ends of the floor plate. Re-claimed barn boards clad structural columns and were incorporated in the sliding doors to the “Marketplace,” a large, welcoming lunchroom. Thanks to stunning graphics spanning the full length of glass walls, symmetrical sets of meeting rooms pay tribute to Canada’s four seasons.

With two separate floors of the Global Showroom to consider, the designer developed two principles: “Inspire” for Floor 2 and “Envision” for Floor 3. Floor 2 inspires the client to imagine the possibilities through a carefully composed and edited display system, presenting products in their very best light. Custom partitions in porcelain, wood veneer and glass can be removed at will, providing an infinitely flexible space. Floor 3, offering office/ workplace recreations, helps the client envision a context that might reflect his or her needs. Various work and social spaces exhibit Global’s various products, including private offices and open workstations; boardrooms and meeting rooms; filing; unconventional private spaces for work or retreat; and social spaces for interacting with colleagues. The forms of the architectural elements and movement through the showrooms are inspired by the angled and curved forms of the original building designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects.

Located on the periphery of Calgary, the facility comprises two multi-purpose rinks, bringing together ice sport enthusiasts from across the city for hockey, sledge, ringette and figure skating. The fully glazed entrance of laminated glass hockey graphics, creating “rural billboards” expressive of ice sport, start things off with a bang. High density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets – the same material used for rink puck boards – are integrated into the millwork details, creating bold information panels and seamless sculptural benches that define the central meeting place. The benches are sculpted at different heights to allow for different sitting heights and areas for stools to set against and become counter space. HDPE is also used as a consistent wayfinding liner that demarcates the location and numbers for each team room. Large scale, routered changeroom numbers reveal a contrasting charcoal colour behind.

JLABS HEALTHCARE INCUBATOR
JLabs Toronto is home to emerging companies advancing pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer and digital health programs. Located on one floor, the 30,000-sq.-ft. facility provides cutting-edge, modular and scalable lab space, state-of-theart equipment, office space and access to capital funding experts. The designer’s contribution is a 6,500-sq.-ft. collaborative Incubator Space. Its distinguishing feature is the “Global Connect,” a centralized telecommunications hub that resembles an oversized cell. Featuring Cisco telepresence, it connects the scientists back to the “home base” of Johnson & Johnson. The elevator lobby features an array of custom glass petri dishes encapsulated by black surrounds on the ceiling. Visitors are led through the space via a portal with views of Toronto’s skyline.

KPMG VAUGHAN METROPOLITAN CENTRE
Translating the client’s request for a connection between its Vaughan location and the main downtown Toronto office, the designer aimed to create a sophisticated north metropolis. The typical practice floor focuses on a central amenities hub that includes a coffee bar and lounge seating, designed around a striking internal staircase to encourage movement. Throughout the floors, mobile workers can book a workstation or a variety of alternative spaces with plug-and-play technology. Perimeter offices were moved inboard with a smaller footprint and glass fronts; acoustical panel fabrics and sound masking were integrated to solve sound sensitivity issues. To provide flexibility, the main boardrooms include ceiling mounted retractable walls, set back from the perimeter windows. All glazing is equipped with switch glass to allow access to natural light and privacy control.

On a recent trip to France, Chef Brandon Olsen learned the idiom, “Tu as la banane” – and has been smiling ever since. To Chef, the banana has always been emblematic of happiness and contentment; the designer not only internalized the sentiment but also used it as a driver for the guest experience and interior design for a new 1,800-sq.-ft. restaurant in Toronto’s west end. Like the menu, the overall environment is rooted in traditions yet still distinctly modern. Classically inspired references form the foundation of the interior, while artistic gestures as a sculptural ceramic monkey add a charming absurdity. Three separate dining areas, each with its own colour palette and modified seating types, were created making use of the client’s personal art collection. The design team also relied on readily available found objects, materials and lighting; antique objects were sourced along with customdesigned millwork and commissioned in-situ artwork.

The client – a Canadian retailer catering to the style-conscious woman – requested a multi-functional space with a “refined rawness.” The designer broke it into two key elements: a storefront, with undulating volumes; and the internal centrepiece, termed the “retail piazza.” The storefront is a striking composition of a bold box clad with hot-rolled steel and a folded wood plane; the latter undulates from foreground at the upper level to background at the lower level, where it becomes a framing device to highlight the merchandise. The retail piazza is defined by a volumetric shift, a change in both flooring material and ceiling expression; it promotes the idea of a collective community and encourages social interaction as part of the shopping experience. Like the storefront, the interior offers an interplay of hot-rolled steel (delightfully inconsistent in colour) and wood (solid hickory, similarly embraced for its varied wood-grain hues).

MILLER THOMSON LLP By bringing a fresh, modern aesthetic to an existing conference floor – true to the company’s corporate culture and updated brand image – the client hoped to attract new talent. The space was demolished with the exception of the IT room, print room and internal stair. Reception is now a pale and pristine light-filled space. The stair provides a sculptural element, creating vistas to the small meeting rooms beyond reception and into distant rooms. Natural light pours through grey-tinted-glass demountable fronts. Corridors connect the floor to multiple meeting rooms, equipped with integrated AV technology; the main boardrooms and staff lounge are equipped with ceiling-mounted retractable walls. Inspiration drawn from the dynamic lines of the company corporate logo is reflected in repetitive elements of metal inlays in the black-porcelain tile behind reception and linear lights that mimic the contrasting floor patterns.

MOMOFUKU LAS VEGAS To bring Momofuku to Las Vegas, the designer began with the brand’s signature palette of architectural white oak, then added a few suitably showy materials to the mix: peach-tinted mirror, brass accents and warm neon lighting. Since Momofuku’s symbol is the peach, carpets with dragons chasing peaches were custom designed. Original artworks include a 50-foot-long mural, by American multimedia artist David Choe; and – guarding the Secret Private Dining Room – Korean artist Kwangho Lee’s crimson knitted chandelier. The designer established a magical journey through a series of spaces: the Peach Bar, the main dining room with its open kitchen, and two private dining rooms. A custom 20-by-20-foot statement chandelier in black-steel ribbons, inspired by hanging squid ink noodles, anchors the large dining room and gives it some intimacy. Throughout, a series of imaginative visual vignettes create a play between what’s real and what’s not.

In creating a workplace for an experimental marketing agency, the designer was challenged to respond to an historic, brick-and-beam five-storey building in Chicago’s Fulton Market district in a sensitive manner, while conveying the client’s spatial and corporate branding. Found on all floors, a series of communal hubs (varying in size and experience from coffee bars and lounges to bleacher seating and communal tables) serve as areas of retreat from private offices and open workstations. Ethereal metal mesh screening is a recurring architectural element intended to envelope space and define movement; it represents, in physical form, Mosaic’s ethos and unique brand of transparency and community. Connecting the ground and second floors, a dramatic black-mesh staircase composed of bleachers is an area for retreat and individual work, or space for presentations and other office gatherings.

To shift the company’s workspace – three floors connected with an existing staircase – from traditional and conservative to progressive and dynamic, the designer opted for a modern yet timeless design with a Scandinavian influence. Light woods, white walls, contrasting textures and careful application of colour ensures longevity. Material selections were based on quality and functionality. Offices are inboard with full glass fronts, allowing for maximum access to natural daylight; visibility across the workspaces helps break down barriers between departments and encourages more crossdisciplinary interaction. Circulation paths and placement of social zones were carefully planned to minimize interruptions and maintain required focus in personal workspaces. All primary work surfaces are sit/ stand. Unique spaces on each floor include a multi-purpose training space on the 21st floor; a boardroom complex on the floor above; and a games and social lounge on the 23rd floor.

NORTH TORONTO ESTATE
Faced with a 25,000-sq.-ft. sheer volume, the challenge was to create – for a successful builder and developer with young children – a statement home with a friendly, family feel. To manage the vast size, the designer created distinct separate areas. Daily living takes place at the back of the house. Here the designer chose a mix of natural stone and wood finishes, for an overall cocooning effect; mid-century forms in bright jewel tones throughout express a youthful flavour. Halls are kept neutral, with polished marbles, gloss lacquers and silver leaf. The master bedroom provides a glamorous retreat, with silk-upholstered walls, a custom fireplace surrounded in mirror and mother of pearl, and a splash of gold accessories. The lower-level multi-functional entertainment room, accommodating 100, is a perfect venue for various charity events hosted by the client.

SCOTIABANK DIGITAL FACTORY
The purpose of Scotiabank’s Digital Factory is to support and attract top talent working to support 23-million customers in over 50 countries. Designing the 70,000-sq.-ft. single floor plate was a fluid process, engaging strategists, designers and consultants, along with Scotiabank real estate and end-user teams. The result is gear-shaped, its heart a 32-ft. diameter rotunda serving as a central gathering area. Agilists work in flexible benching with collaborative spaces at arm’s length. Biometric security allows fluid movement throughout the space with a wave of a hand. Colour is used to highlight six “neighbourhoods,” while painted portals and colour-blocked rooms break up the city-blocksized space for intuitive way finding. Amenities include a full-service kitchen, café, game area, bowling lane, fitness centre and get-away space.

Located in Toronto’s hip Queen West/Spadina neighbourhood, the 14-storey, is the first phase in a master planned community. The designer was responsible for 8,700 square feet of amenities, including main lobby and lounges; dining, meeting and party rooms; professional fitness centre, yoga studio and theatre. Geometric forms are employed throughout, including box-like veneered entrances to principle areas, furniture and shadows created by concealed lighting within the slatted ceiling above the concierge desk. Mindful of a youthful, urban buyer, the design is dramatic yet clean and neutral, punctuated by black and metallic accents. Indirect lighting is prominent throughout, creating a soft glow, while geometric pendants and chandeliers are statements in and of themselves. Illustrating this is a grouping of contemporary pendants at the reception desk; combined with a black plinth platform base, they register as a graphic light sculpture.

Located in Oakville, Taste Marketeria offers a boutique experience, featuring the finest fresh, local and gourmet food items. The challenge was to create a grocery market and stockroom flexible enough to occasionally serve as a restaurant and classroom. In an open kitchen that breaks down “the kitchen wall,” a chef is featured weekly, inviting guests to get to know the people behind the chef’s restaurant. A long harvest table not only encourages product trial but also provides cooking classes; the kitchen also serves as catering business. Such features as an olive oil tasting bar create special moments throughout the environment. The designer embraced the owner’s love of antiques, found objects and repurposing: a 19th-century drugstore counter from North Carolina serves as the checkout counter, while a wagon wheel is the basis of a dominant lighting feature over the harvest table. Other details include old ceiling tiles, subways tiles and reclaimed wood.

THE BAGEL STOP/ UNION STATION The designer was tasked with bringing a tired and dated brand into the 21st century. After overhauling branding and graphics, the team turned its attention to a micro unit – including an awkwardly placed structural concrete column – situated in the hectic GO West concourse level at Toronto’s Union Station. The resulting design “stands out from the crowd.” Serving as a punchy backdrop are a single-row, chevron pine feature wall and side wall of embossed, diamond porcelain tile; the column, painted black, adds drama. A bespoke bagel-display fixture is positioned at the storefront; it not only showcases the fresh product, put also doubles as a means of navigating the line. Mainly fabricated in hot rolled steel, the display shelves rest on a patinated-copper platform. A “bagel skewer” was incorporated to grab the attention of passersby. A coffee station is made as slender, light and airy as possible.

WEBER SHANDWICK Though the Toronto client considers the company – a global public-relations firm – “classic,” the designer observed a young and vibrant culture bubbling up to the surface, and so developed a design that balances the timeless and the fashionable. Crisp black-andwhite built elements will have a long life. Overlaid is an exuberant CMYK colour model scheme used in transparency on glass fronts, which can be easily updated. The sliding doors and adjacent sidelights are different CMYK colours, creating a third colour during the overlap, for an effect that is kinetic and ephemeral. Once segregated, the firm’s executives are now embedded with their teams in transparent, collaborative offices that encourage casual meetings. In the central public zone, pivot doors open to create a large area where the whole company can gather to host various events. In the office area, “just-in-time” collaborative zones and focus room create a healthy workplace ecosystem.
