THE EDITOR Dear Readers: Welcome to the sixth issue of Canadian Student Magazine, Canada’s semi-annual publication on education and experiential travel in Canada and abroad. I am pleased to bring you another issue packed full of information. The content of Canadian Student Magazine is contributed by industry professionals, whom I sincerely thank for this valuable material. And they do this because they want you, the reader, to stay informed on important topics like destination country or city info; tips on finding the institution or program that best suits your needs and wants; highlights on certain programs; vocational and certificate options and opportunities; and new ways of learning. It is all here for you to learn from and to help you make some important decisions. As I was putting together this issue’s contents, it became very clear to me that there is a strong underlying message that overlaps in many of the editorial pieces, and that is just how important it is to get formal training in your field. Be it international business, nursing, fashion design, plumbing, law, film studies, medicine – it doesn’t matter what the field, except that you need to pursue a formal certificate, diploma, and/or degree in order to be more marketable in today’s workplace.

You will also learn some interesting job statistics in some of the provincial pieces we have in this issue. It is encouraging to see how many positions will be available in the coming years and in which sectors, so getting your official training and combining this with work experience – at home, abroad, or a combintation of the two – will ensure that you are ready to be hired! And of course, if you are someone who is interested in starting up your own enterprise – be it for or not for profit – you will find the feature on Entrepreneurship interesting and valuable. Written by and about young Canadians who know first-hand what it takes to dive into a personal venture, it is inspiring and insightful. This past December a few fortunate St. George’s University medical students had the opportunity to participate in the University’s India Medical Experience Selective. The students spent two weeks at the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University (KIMS) in Karad, India, where they shadowed attending physicians and participated in rotations with residents and interns in numerous departments, including internal medicine, surgery, and radiology. Students experienced first-hand how health care systems operate in a country with few resources and a large number of patients. Northern Michigan University has launched a historic international partnership in Cuba. NMU is one of only 16 U.S. institutions granted a license for study abroad programs in the country and the first to extend its presence beyond Havana. Two NMU students who accompanied the group have remained for the semester at the University of Matanzas, east of the nation’s capital. Anglia Ruskin University has seen the number of applications for full-time undergraduate courses rise by almost 19% over the last 12 months. The University has so far received 8,195 applications from people wishing to enroll on a full-time undergraduate course beginning in September 2011. Hillsborough Community College is a really great college for an international student like me who wants to complete the first two years of college in the U.S. and meet the general education requirements required to transfer to a four-year college or university. The small class sizes help me better participate in the class activities. Since there are only 20-30 students in a classroom, students have more opportunities to interact with the teacher and students, better understand the lecture, and make more friends. As a student from outside of an Englishspeaking environment, you can take advantage of so many opportunities to develop your English skills in writing and speaking. Kiwis are lovely! There is no way that you will not feel welcome. I knew the importance of the food industry to New Zealand: As a food engineer it called my attention to carry out my studies here. My supervisor is one of a kind. Since day one, he was 100% supportive to my work. He gave me responsibilities, guided me, and taught me a lot in my area of research. As a prephysician student from Chicago, with five years of Spanish, I was interested in applying my studies in a medical setting. I signed up for four weeks in Guadalajara, Mexico, taking

Spanish courses at the University Autónoma de Guadalajara, one of Mexico’s top medical schools. The clinical aspect of the course was unique because it served as an opportunity to observe how medicine is practiced differently in a foreign country. Looking back on this experience, I would recommend this program to any student interested in health care who would also like to communicate with patients in Spanish. Sometimes you’ll find that professors at a larger university are more concerned with their own research than with teaching their students, but this couldn’t be further from the truth at St. George’s. I was in the midst of researching many schools across Canada when my plans for studying at the University of Melbourne materialized. About the Australian Education System Schooling in Australia begins with a preparatory year followed by 12 years of primary and secondary education. Attending school is compulsory until the age of 16 or completion of Year 10. Students who continue their education through years 11 and 12, study towards a government-endorsed certificate that provides a pathway to further education in an Australian tertiary education institution. There are two types of tertiary education programs in Australia: 1. those offered by universities and other public and private higher education providers; and 2. those offered by public and private training providers and institutions in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. There are 39 Australian universities2, based both in the major cities as well as regional centres. Several of these universities regularly appear in the various world rankings (for example, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranking and The Times Higher Education Supplement University Rankings). Australian universities offer programs that lead to qualifications ranging from undergraduate bachelor degrees to postgraduate doctorates. Many Australian institutions also offer foundation studies or bridging courses to help students meet the entry requirements for further study. Completing study through an Australian university increases employability and provides skills that are transferable to any part of a student’s life.

Australia’s VET system delivers industry-based qualifications that provide students with the skills identified as critical by employers. This training ensures students develop the knowledge and expertise they need to enter the workforce for the first time, re-train for a new job, re-enter the workforce, or upgrade their skills. Many Australian institutions also offer English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS). Le système d’éducation australien en bref L’éducation australienne débute avec une année préparatoire, suivie de 12 années d’enseignement primaire et secondaire. L’assiduité à l’école est obligatoire jusqu’à l’âge de 16 ans ou jusqu’à la réussite de la 10e année. Les étudiants poursuivant leurs études au-delà de la 11e et la 12e année suivent un certificat approuvé par le gouvernement qui donne accès à des études supérieures dans une institution d’enseignement australienne. Design programmes in New Zealand cover a lot of different areas. Qualifications are available in the fields of graphic design, interior design, fashion design, product design, animation, video game development, video production and post-production, make-up design, creative advertising and many others. Every level from certificates through to doctorates are offered, and the courses include lots of practical experience to build that all important portfolio. The Adschool at Auckland’s Media Design School has recently been named the world’s fourth best advertising school by the prestigious YoungGuns Awards in the U.S., which recognise the world’s hottest creative talent under the age of thirty. The school also offers New Zealand’s only qualification in game development. Interactive Gaming senior tutor Steffan Hooper says, “We work them hard while they’re here, but at the end of the day, we believe that the skills, knowledge and work ethic that they gain at Media Design School is what makes our graduates so well-respected in the industry.” Matthias Reiche from Germany studied 3D Animation at the school, and he agrees that the challenging work was worthwhile. “We would often work late into the night to get a project finished, bouncing ideas off each other. I think that’s something I appreciate more now that I am working and realise how important a co-operative, supportive environment is,” Matthias says. “My studies enabled me to get my first job in animation. Now I can call myself a 3D Animator and can work pretty much anywhere in the world.” Shakira Tseng of Taiwan says she was “up for a big adventure” when she decided to study for a Diploma of Multimedia at Natcoll Design Technology.

“I chose Natcoll because it offered a great study environment and the tutors were really friendly and nice,” Shakira says. She also appreciated the industry focus and how the tutors covered such topics as creating a CV and preparing a portfolio. “Before we graduated, Natcoll ran a ‘job seeker’ seminar for us. It was great, a really positive thing to do.”

NEW ZEALAND

It’s no wonder that New Zealand has earned a reputation for creativity. This is the nation that brought to life the film fantasy worlds of Narnia, Middle Earth, and Avatar’s Pandora. Students from around the globe are flocking south to this little country with a hugely successful design and arts sector, and learning how to launch their own creative careers.

Shakira returned home to Taiwan and is now a product marketing specialist at Taipei Science Park. Thi Huong Tong first arrived in New Zealand from Vietnam to attend high school, but ended up staying on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at Otago Polytechnic. “I didn’t intend to study in NZ. I thought I’d go to England for my fashion studies, but my homestay mom told me about the course at Otago Polytechnic. We came and took a look and I felt really good because there were lots of practical things happening in the class and that’s what I wanted,” Thi says. “We learned everything – theory and practical. And they offered us very good experience related to the fashion industry, like helping with fashion shows and working experience in a real workplace. Last term I went up to Auckland and I worked for (top NZ designer) Trelise Cooper. So it was really useful. Everything I dreamed of!” Otago Polytechnic and the University of Otago have collaborated to create the Otago Institute of Design. This facility in the city of Dunedin brings together design students from both institutions to share facilities and benefit from a truly creative atmosphere. Over in Christchurch Wendy Kim studied Fashion Design at Design & Arts College (D&A) and also appreciated the practical knowledge she gained along with her creative training. “D&A gave me the advantage of a realistic education. After three years I had a solid base of knowledge that I could take into the industry. I am now working as a Fashion Supplier for Crystal Rivers Collection. We design and prepare apparel and present it to retail stores, while constantly building new relationships and ideas,” Wendy says. She is now working in Sydney, Australia.

There may have been a time in the past when studying in a creative field didn’t lead to much of a career, but these days creativity is very much in demand. From advertising to film to interior design, there are excellent jobs to be found for those with the right skills. Design courses in New Zealand lead to rewarding work offers all over the world. Higher learning leads to a

passion for Like many young people, Jennifer went straight to university after high school. After four years, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education. It was during those four years that she discovered her true passion. “I took a range of things. That’s why I liked my degree program—because you dabbled in a bunch of different areas,” says Jennifer. “I loved my nutrition classes. I would read the textbooks for fun.” Exploring different programs of study can help prospective students make an informed decision. CanLearn.ca provides search tools and information about jobs and wages, schools, and scholarships. Soon after graduation, Jennifer decided to become a dietician. That meant three more years of university in Toronto. According to a 2009 report from the Canadian Council on Learning, just over half of college and university students follow the traditional path through their post-secondary education, graduating from the program and school where they first began their studies. The rest take a less direct route. For some, this means attending more than one institution, switching programs or changing subject areas. 30

Jennifer recently completed a one-year internship as a dietician. After a threemonth job hunt, she’s now working in diabetes outreach. “Even though I’m in debt, I don’t have any regrets,” she says with a laugh. Nor should she; in today’s labour market, two out of three jobs require a post-secondary education, according to a labour market report from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. Your parents, your friends, and your school counsellor all have advice about where you should apply for university. These people know you well, but how can you sort through all of the difficult decisions and discover the university that is the perfect match for you? It takes a bit of time to figure it out, but here are some questions that can help you.

Outgoing vs. Bashful

Do you want to date someone who is the life of the party or do you think you are better matched with the quiet person who is a bit shy? The size of a school can make a difference with how comfortable you feel on campus. Big schools with populations in the tens of thousands can be excellent choices for students who are outgoing and like to make friends with lots of people. If you are the kind of person who has more than 1,000 friends on facebook and still wants more, then a large university campus will be perfect for you. However, if you think a large group is more than three people, you should consider going to a smaller university. Liberal arts colleges are wonderful because you will not get lost walking across campus. The new school and your classmates will be easy to get to know quickly. In addition, you will be able to have lots of personal attention from professors. Whether you like a large university or a small one is like choosing between the life of the party or the shy person hanging near the edge of the crowd.

Metrosexual vs. Rustic Charmer

Do you want someone who is fashionable with their hair done or do you want someone who is up for a bike ride or hike through the woods? A school’s location can tell you a lot about its personality. Universities that are located in the heart of a huge metropolis will be more influenced by the rhythms of city life. The pace of activities will be fast and there will always be undiscovered amusements around the next corner. This can be very invigorating and energizing or it could overwhelm your sensibilities and distract you from your studies. Universities that are located in more rural areas tend to be more personal and relaxed. The small towns are usually complete with a few small shops and cozy cafÊs. Campus activities help to form a strong community where people say hello on the sidewalks and remember your name. This environment can be monotonous and boring to some or rather refreshing and laid back to others. Whether you like the speed of the city or the calm of the country is a personal


choice. It can be the difference between dating an urbanite or an outdoor enthusiast.

Jock vs. Nerd

Do you want to date an athletic jock, or do you want to be with a geeky nerd? Maybe you want to date someone who is a bit of both. University sports teams are organized into divisions; the more Division I teams a university has the more geared towards athletics the campus will be. If you are an athlete yourself, look at all of the institutions that offer your sport to see if you could possibly get a scholarship to play. For the proud nerds, consider attending one of the technical universities that specialize in the subject you geek on. You can find university rankings by subjects to see which schools have the best programs in your very specific field of study. If you want both athletics and brains, you are lucky because most American universities have a good mix of both. So, look for a university that has the major you want to study and an intramural sports team you would like to join. Whether you like athletics or science there is a jock or nerd waiting for you somewhere.

Elite vs. Egalitarian

Do you want to date someone who is a member of the selective crowd, or do you want someone who is more unrestricted? Private universities and colleges provide excellent educations to a small sliver of the university student population. If you have the resources to attend one of these schools, go for it. You will graduate with a degree you can be proud of. Public universities have many advantages too; since they are supported by the state they are in, a four-year degree is generally much less expensive. They also tend to have many more subjects and specialties to major in. Whether you attend a private university or a public university has a lot to do with your talents and your resources. Private colleges can be as difficult to get into as the popular crowd in your high school, so public universities are often just a more realistic option. So think about it. Who do you want to date? Make the Ocean Your Destination Most students planning a semester off-campus think of the ocean as something to fly over…a barrier between their home campus and their destination. But for a select group of students interested in a unique semester away, the ocean is the destination.

Isn’t it worth one semester to study threequarters of the world?

The oceans cover most of our planet and have a major role in global climate, energy production, international trade, politics, biodiversity, and food production. Study of the oceans is an incredibly valuable component of any liberal arts education and can contribute to degree programs in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Academic opportunities to study the oceans:

There are a number of programs that provide opportunities to study the oceans from different perspectives on a variety of sailing and motor vessels. They range in the balance between academic and experiential emphasis, coastal vs. open ocean routes, and science vs. humanities credits, so there are programs that can contribute to every student’s education. Several programs provide a full semester of academic credit, though course offerings and credit structure varies with the program. Canadian students participating in at-sea programs in the United States can apply for financial aid from the semester program they choose and can also apply for specific scholarships. Killam Fellowships are an example of scholarships specifically designed to promote undergraduate exchange between Canada and the U.S. One program in its 40th year of operation is SEA Semester in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. Offered by Sea Education Association (SEA), an internationally-recognized leader in undergraduate ocean education, each 17-credit SEA Semester begins with six weeks in Woods Hole, a world-renowned center for ocean and science exploration. USA policy), and nautical science (meteorology, physics, celestial navigation, ship operations). They also develop individual or small-group research projects in the sciences and humanities. After the preparation on shore, students join one of SEA’s two 134-foot brigantine sailing ships for a six-week offshore sailing/research cruise to complete their research projects. The ships look like traditional sailing vessels but are outfitted with sophisticated equipment for oceanographic research. There are no passengers on these U.S. Coast Guard-approved training vessels; every student is considered part of the crew and rotates through watches in the laboratory, collecting and processing oceanographic samples; on deck, handling sails, steering, and navigating; and in the engine room and galley (kitchen). In a typical semester the ship stops once or twice in foreign ports for time off to explore and also to participate in organized activities to learn more about the local history, culture, politics, and environment.

Arriving in a foreign port aboard a ship

is a completely different experience than arriving via air travel. Anticipation builds for days before arrival, giving students time to research, discuss, and learn about the country and port city they are headed for. The first sight of land, the first smell of vegetation, foreign vessels and people on the waterfront, finally dropping the anchor or coming along side the dock; these are all exciting events that unfold each time you enter a new port.

The resources available to the students in both the classroom/ library on and offshore, and the vast sea of knowledge embodied in our teachers meant that all you had to do was ask a question and the oceans of knowledge would come pouring out. NORWAY Norway is a great option for Canadian students who want to pursue international education. About 70 higher education institutions in the Nordic country offer a vast array of quality study options in subject areas such as petroleum engineering, marine biology, environmental technology, peace keeping and childhood studies. Nearly 200 full Master’s degree programs are taught in English. Ever since Viking explorer Leiv Eriksson landed on the shores of Newfoundland about a thousand years ago, the bonds between Canada and Norway have been strong. While different in size and population, the two nations share a lot when it comes to landscape, climate, natural resources and a close proximity to the North – similarities that lead to common interests in research and education. Norway is an increasingly attractive destination for students and researchers from all over the world. Currently, more than 12 000 foreign students are preparing for their future careers in Norway. Andrea Bozman from Vancouver Island University spent one semester in Norway, as an exchange student at Bodoe University College in 2009. She enjoyed it so much the first time she decided to go back. “In Canada I studied fisheries and aquaculture at Vancouver Island University, a field in which Norway is a world leader. Northern Norway, as one of the most cold-water productive regions worldwide, makes Bodoe a natural choice for marine science studies. As I continue my academic career, I want to shift my focus to marine ecology, and again Bodoe provides the courses and research options I need to achieve my goals,” she says. Although Andrea did not know that much about Norway before she arrived, she realized there was no need to worry. “My knowledge of Norway didn’t extend much past the climate, lutefisk, cost of living and Nordic skiing. Once I arrived, I found Norwegians to be incredibly helpful, whether it be with study related issues, everyday life such as where to find the least expensive grocery store or social activities,” she adds.

Higher Education in Norway The majority of Norwegian institutions of higher education are publicly funded, and there are normally no tuition fees at public universities and university colleges. This also applies to foreign students, regardless of their country of origin. Fees may be charged, however, for certain professional education programs or by private institutions. Norway has seven accredited universities, nine accredited specialized university institutions, 25 accredited university colleges, two accredited national colleges of the arts, and 29 private institutions of higher education. Combined, they offer over 200 Master’s programs taught in English, and a range of courses tailored for exchange students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Norway is undoubtedly a place to consider for students wanting to specialize in fields such as aquaculture, petroleum, shipping, environmental technology, renewable energy or welfare. Inspiring, high-quality programs and courses in a number of other disciplines are also available for visiting students.

Norway was one of the first countries in Europe to implement the so-called Bologna process. An important aim of this agreement is to make academic degree standards and credit systems for higher education more comparable and compatible throughout Europe. The introduction of bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees and ECTS credits make transfer of credits easy between institutions in Norway and Canada. There are a number of exchange agreements between Norwegian and Canadian institutions, for both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Funding Since there are no tuition fees at many Norwegian institutions, studying in Norway would generally be a good deal for Canadian students, even if the cost of living is somewhat higher than in Canada. But for exchange students who pay home tuition during their stay abroad, the added costs add up fast. Luckily, there are some scholarships available. For students coming on exchange to institutions in Northern Norway, the Fellowship Program for Studies in the

High North offer both travel stipends and a monthly scholarship. Through the University of the Arctic, students can go on exchanges through the mobility program North2North, which also includes a scholarship. International students are also allowed to take part-time jobs while studying in Norway. The outcome of studying abroad in the northern corner of the world is that you can combine your studies with exciting outdoor activities, both winter and summer. As a student in Norway you will never be short of possibilities for unique experiences. Andrea Bozman admits that she really misses Canadian food while being away from home. Nevertheless, she is fully aware that studying abroad is a very smart move when considering your future career. “It gives you a unique chance to experience a different culture and way of life. This is important for anyone, student or not, and can only promote personal growth,” she says. Andrea also believes that exposure to different academic environments gives you new perspectives and insight.

In the IBS degree program, specialists of different fields from business, media and information technology are coaching students along in their studies. Traditional teaching and lecturing is not a relevant method in this program. The students are introduced to the basic subject matter at hand at the beginning of each module by their coaches, and various subjects are interlocked throughout wider modules such as Challenges in Internationality and Business and Humanity. IBS modules are combining the fields of business administration, information and communication technology, and media with customer service, creative service development and marketing. As part of their studies, students of the program are required to do at least one international exchange semester outside of Finland in either Europe, Asia, North America, or Asia – and up to two exchange periods are available.

The heart of Europe might not be where you think; the geographers have established that it’s located in the Baltic country Lithuania, which may be deceptively small but is actually an attractive Northern European academic destination for foreign students. Boasting not just plenty of study opportunities, but a dynamic economy and a rich history as well, Lithuania attracts impressive numbers of international students every semester. As for the most academic local city, nothing beats Kaunas, the provisional capital, which is always swarming with students and exuding a warm and cozy academic atmosphere.

The system of higher education in Lithuania has undergone a lot of positive changes since re-gaining independence in 1991 and joining the EU over a decade later. A variety of new disciplines has been added to the curricula of universities, Lithuanian researchers joined international networks, and new generations of scholars became members in a variety of academic communities. As a result, there has been a certain renewal in research paradigms and a noticeably growing tendency towards an interdisciplinary approach in the teaching of humanities and social sciences.

Today there are as many as 45 institutions of higher education in the country: 14 state universities, eight non-state universities, 13 state colleges and ten non-state colleges. University studies are organized in three cycles: undergraduate (Bachelor’s), graduate (Master’s), and post-graduate (Doctoral) degree studies. All Lithuanian schools of higher education actively participate in various international programmes and develop relations with academic institutions abroad, which serve as the basis for student, teacher and scientist mobility. Almost all Lithuanian institutions of higher education are members of the European exchange programme LLP/Erasmus. Academic exchange programmes are currently carried out in collaboration with numerous countries, including France, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea, Latvia, Poland, Brazil, the U.S. and many others. The available programmes are divided into 63 study fields, which are in turn grouped into six study areas: the humanities, the arts, the social, physical, biomedical and technological sciences. There are plenty of degree programmes and a variety of courses offered in English here, therefore the

language barrier is never a problem. Grants are offered to foreign students who come to Lithuania for studies or research under the sponsorship of the government. Some of the governmental agreements cover travel, insurance, tuition fees and accommodation expenses. Some universities offer scholarships for international students. Lithuanian academic traditions have deeper roots than those of the country’s neighbors. The first university in the country was founded in 1579, and at that time it was also the first one in the entire region of Eastern Europe. While other higher education schools or universities in Lithuania may not be as old, they also faithfully pursue a direction of their choice, whether it is attention to the exact sciences and in-depth studies of a particular field, or an artes liberales direction offering wide-spanning general education. This small yet noteworthy country, situated at what could be called a gateway location between the West and the East, certainly has enough to offer for a curious student from any corner of the world. Come and see for yourself, and you will soon find that academic communities in Lithuania are friendly and open to everyone. Why Spain?

Firstly, its way of life, which is the envy of many Western countries where everything moves at such a hectic pace. In Spain, life is all about taking time to savour it. Everything is open late into the night, and there are always people strolling around, having leisurely drinks on open-air terrazas, and generally enjoying themselves.

Studying Tourism

Spain is a truly fantastic place to study tourism - if not the best. It offers a vast range of activities for varied interests, including culture, business, outdoor and countryside activities, and gastronomy. The market is constantly expanding and Spain is now one of the leading destinations in the world in terms of visitors and profit. Last year alone, almost 60 million tourists visited Spain to experience the Spanish lifestyle. Studying tourism in Spain means being in contact with leading companies in the sector and having the opportunity to gain first-hand experience from them. For example, Madrid hosts one of the world’s most important annual tourism fairs,

namely FITUR, where over a hundred countries and thousands of companies showcase their products. Tourism can be seen from many different perspectives, but it is basically a discipline that encompasses culture, languages, and management, all of which can play a significant role in both academic and personal growth.

International experience is playing an increasingly pivotal role in today’s global environment. Talk to anyone who has studied abroad and they will tell you how the time they spent in a different environment had a marked impact on their lives. Spain has always attracted students wanting to acquire international experience. It is a very attractive option for a broad range of reasons.

A Bachelor Degree in Tourism affords a deep exploration of this industry while equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to be successful in the multidisciplinary and varied tourism sector. Adding business and management to the degree brings a further advantage, in that it broadens the student’s range of professional skills and opportunities, including the possibility of working in Europe.

Additionally, Spain recently overhauled its higher education system to bring it into line with the European Higher Education Area (also known as the Bologna Process), which seeks to standardize all higher education systems and degrees in Europe. The participating 47 countries that are mainly in Europe all recognize degrees from Spanish Universities. The key difference in the new system is the new degree model, called the “Grado”: a four-year degree equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Sciences. After completing the Grado, the student can go on to study a oneyear Master program or pursue a three to four-year PhD. This compatibility among education models will increase student mobility between Europe and North America at both undergraduate and graduate level.

And there’s more. Spain is at the cultural crossroads of Europe, North America, and Latin America. Its geographical position and climate makes it a magnet for tourists resulting in a strong tourism market, complete with all related industries. Spain brings the opportunity to learn or perfect a language spoken by more than 350 million people across the globe, serving as the world’s second business language and bringing a key competitive advantage to anyone working in the tourist sector. Many degree programs in Spain are now offered in both Spanish and English, which means that international students can choose either option, depending on their level and/or preference.

Life in Madrid

Madrid lies at the center of the Iberian Peninsula and enjoys a continental climate. As a major European capital Madrid offers all the facilities a student could need, including internationallyrenowned public and private universities, research and library resources, as well as organizations that can provide all the information required about funding studies. Madrid also has an efficient transport system composed of local and regional trains, buses and more than 10 subway lines that make it very easy to get around the city. Madrid’s impressive architectural, historical and cultural offerings are yet another aspect that makes it one of Europe’s most attractive cities both to visit and to live in. It is also one of the most vibrant cities in the world, known for its lively nightlife and constant stream of cultural events, including festivals, fairs, concerts and exhibitions.

Finally, Madrid has excellent connections to other cities in Spain as well as other European capitals, making it easy to travel around and discover further countries, languages, cultures, landscapes, food and people. The relatively small distance between European countries makes it possible to visit very different places without having to go too far, while the plentiful cheap and shared accommodation, coupled with frequent buses, trains and low-cost flights on offer, make it accessible to most student budgets. Living and studying in Spain is most definitely a wonderful opportunity. It brings memorable experiences, as well as helps to develop interpersonal skills coupled with a significant increase in knowledge that will open many doors for future jobs and education. Working in trades:

‘Your ticket to live anywhere’ Brad didn’t always know what he wanted to do. “After high school, I started a recreation and leisure diploma at a Toronto-area college, but didn’t finish,” he says. “After that, I started to work for a renovation company.” Brad eventually went back to college, finished his diploma and completed a co op term in Whistler, B.C. “Although that was a great learning experience, I soon realized that it wasn’t the path for me,” he says. “I went back to the same renovation company, which then led me to my apprenticeship.” That apprenticeship led him to a career as a carpenter. Brad’s story is quite common. According to a 2009 report from the Canadian Council on Learning, just under half of college and university students don’t follow the traditional path. This could mean attending more than one educational institution, switching programs or subject areas, or leaving school and then returning at a later date. Just over half of postsecondary students graduate from the program and school where they first began their studies. Brad is a big supporter of working in the trades. “The trades are your ticket to live anywhere, travel and work, stay active, and continuously learn,” he says. “I have travelled around Canada, and I’ve worked with people that have been all over the world.” But he knows his college experience helped him get there. “Going to school at 19 is a good experience,” he says. “In college or university, they want you to think for yourself.” Still, Brad is happiest “working on the tools,” as he calls it. “There’s a lot of opportunity to explore, and you get paid to do it.”

Les études supérieures: une voie pour trouver

sa passion Comme beaucoup de jeunes, Jennifer a tout de suite fréquenté l’université après ses études secondaires. Après quatre ans, elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en sciences et un baccalauréat en éducation physique et santé. C’est au cours de ces quatre années à l’université qu’elle a découvert ce qui allait devenir sa passion. « J’ai suivi différents cours. J’ai aimé mon programme d’études justement pour cette raison; il m’a permis de toucher à des domaines divers, raconte Jennifer. J’aimais beaucoup mes cours de nutrition. Je lisais même mes manuels scolaires uniquement pour le plaisir. » Pour faire un choix de carrière éclairé, les futurs étudiants peuvent s’informer sur les différents programmes d’études. Le site Cibletudes.ca leur propose des outils à cette fin et leur fournit des renseignements sur les emplois, les salaires, les établissements d’enseignement et les bourses d’études. Peu de temps après avoir obtenu son diplôme, Jennifer a choisi de devenir diététiste. Pour ce faire, elle devait suivre un programme universitaire de trois ans à Toronto. Jennifer a récemment terminé un stage d’un an en nutrition. Après trois mois de recherche d’emploi, elle travaille maintenant à des projets de sensibilisation au diabète. « Même si je suis endettée, je n’ai aucun regret », dit-elle en riant. Et elle a bien raison. Selon un rapport sur le marché du travail de Ressources humaines et Développement des compétences Canada, deux emplois sur trois, sur le marché du travail d’aujourd’hui, nécessitent des études postsecondaires. Pour Jennifer, le détour en a valu la peine. « L’université vous ouvre beaucoup de portes et vous donne le temps de découvrir ce que vous voulez réellement faire, affirme-t-elle. Je suis contente d’avoir persévéré en vue de faire ce que je souhaitais vraiment. »

In 2010-11, Ontario is investing almost $3.4 billion in Ontario universities as well as almost $1.4 billion in colleges.

Career Opportunities

In the coming years, with 70% of Ontario jobs requiring postsecondary education, there will be a strong demand for college graduates. About 85% of college graduates who are now in the labour market find work within six months of graduating. With a declining birth rate and baby boomers retiring, the Conference Board of Canada estimates Ontario

Beyond the tremendous education and employment opportunities and the natural beauty of the province, the Government of Saskatchewan created the Graduate Retention Program to help recent post-secondary graduates begin their careers in Saskatchewan. It is the most aggressive youth retention program in the country; the program rewards post-secondary graduates for building a future in Saskatchewan by offering a refundable income tax credit to rebate up to $20,000 in tuition fees. With the combined goal of meeting labour demand and building diverse, dynamic, and cosmopolitan communities, our province established one of the leading immigration programs in Canada, the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), to help facilitate the immigration process for skilled workers/professionals with the experience and credentials to fill

skill shortages in the province. The Student Category allows eligible post-secondary graduates to apply for landed immigrant status under the SINP. The Student Category accepts nominations through two streams: the Post-Graduation Work Permit Stream and the Master’s and PhD Graduate Stream. To help link people to careers, Saskatchewan also offers SaskJobs.ca the province’s largest job-matching website. The site provides free job posting services for employers across the province and across the economy. Currently there are well over 7,000 jobs posted. Small business is the driving force behind Canada’s economic growth and prosperity. But are we doing all that we can to support the next generation of entrepreneurs? Are our school-based and extracurricular programs teaching the necessary business skills, instilling the desire and highlighting the importance and profitability of entrepreneurship? While we may have missed the mark historically, this couldn’t be further from the reality of modern day students. The Canadian educational landscape is changing: high schools and post-secondary institutions have introduced classes – even full programs – dedicated to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit in Canadian youth. One needs only to look at the brilliant young minds choosing

entrepreneurship (think: Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg) to realize the true potential of today’s youth.

Organizations like the Canadian Youth Business Foundation are shining a light on entrepreneurship, celebrating, championing and cultivating the next generation of entrepreneurs through programs that offer financing, education and resources to young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 34.

They are doing so through initiatives such as Global Entrepreneurship Week and by lobbying the Canadian Federal Government for things such as having the year 2011 officially declared the Year of the Entrepreneur. Through collaborative movements like these, the organization can convene and bring together educators, entrepreneurial organizations, and the public and private sectors, to work together to acknowledge and advance entrepreneurial pursuits.

With small- to medium-sized businesses accounting for 98% of all businesses across Canada, and more than 19% of these owners planning to retire within the next five years, there has never been a better time to shine a light on entrepreneurship.

ACE is a national charitable organization that encourages young Canadians to create brighter futures for themselves and their communities by pursuing entrepreneurship as a career. ACE works in collaboration with over 50 colleges and universities across Canada to provide experiencebased programming that challenges students to address economic, social and environmental issues with their own entrepreneurial adventures. The organization currently delivers two programs:

program supports full-time college and university students who also operate a business. It provides opportunities to network with other like-minded students, showcase their business to industry leaders and receive training and mentorship are part of the program. The next step is representing Canada at the Global Student Entrepreneur awards.

Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) SAGE is a global network that links high schools students with opportunities and resources to improve their communities through innovative entrepreneurial projects. Student teams of at least three people can also participate in workshops and competitions, including the SAGE National Competition. This experience is designed to help young people form the belief that it is possible to make a positive difference in the world. SAGE Canada is a program of SIFE Ryerson. Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone (DMZ) The DMZ is an energetic workspace in downtown Toronto where young entrepreneurs come to collaborate, innovate and market their products and services. The open, flexible space includes complimentary access to equipment and opportunities for business plan counseling, mentoring, workshops, networking and industry showcasing. The idea is that with limited start-up expenses, entrepreneurs can put their resources into the launch of their business. The W. Brett Wilson Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence The Wilson Centre was made possible through donations from University of Saskatchewan alum, businessman, and television personality, W. Brett Wilson. The Wilson Center aims to inspire excellence in entrepreneurship on the University of Saskatchewan campus by providing access to mentoring, coaching and networking opportunities. The Institute of Entrepreneurship and Community Innovation at George Brown College At the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Community Innovation, George Brown College students offer consulting services to local organizations, as well as for fellow students and alumni. These highly trained students have current knowledge on the latest technology, trends and innovations and a desire to help clients launch, manage and grow their businesses. In turn, clients help them obtain field experience. Students with dreams of pursuing their own business endeavors benefit from advice on how to apply for mentoring and financing from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation.

“You can be a doctor, or a lawyer!” “A lawyer, or maybe a doctor!” “A doctor AND a lawyer!” It was a pretty narrow vision. Really, their aspirations for me only required one result: Financial security. With that in mind, I set out to find my career path. Besides the two professions that were drilled into my mind as a child, I explored other options: teaching, lecturing, tutoring, scholastic advising. I noticed a pattern. I was never the best student, but I felt most comfortable in the academic environment. There was something reassuring about advancing from one grade to another, steadily, with the guidance of a teacher or a counsellor. And at the heart of it all, there it was: Security. Naturally, my search for the ‘sure thing’ did not lead me to entrepreneurship. It was only when I joined Impact Entrepreneurship Group in my third year of University that I realized it was possible to ‘practice’ entrepreneurship in a safe environment. Impact is Canada’s largest studentrun, non-profit organization, dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship among our nation’s youth. Like most twenty-year-olds, I wasn’t going to invest every last penny into a single idea, and I did not feel confident enough to dive into a new venture independently. What I needed was a safety net – a place to show my entrepreneurial zest in a supportive atmosphere. An Entrepreneurial Academy, if you will. “The people that benefit most from Impact, are the people that are a part of it,” says Marius Sobrepena, Impact’s former Director of People Development. I was intrigued. The organization took painstaking measures to engage youth through a multitude of events and competitions. Aren’t these participants the ones reaping the rewards?

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Growing up in an immigrant family, I witnessed first-hand how difficult it is to get established in a foreign environment. My parents had no contacts and no money, and the daily grind and uncertainty took a toll on them. But here we were, in Canada, “a place of opportunity.” We had been told time and time again that each new generation of Canadians has the resources, and the obligation, to move up from their parents’ station. So over the years, their vision for my future kept me motivated.

With that reassuring thought, I went back to the root of it all: What does it mean to be ‘entrepreneurial’? Is it possible to be truly committed to an enterprise without making a financial investment? Isn’t it like playing poker without real money? What’s stopping me from going all-in all the time? Marius was quick to agree. “That’s exactly what they’re doing – going all-in,” he said. “The most important thing about Impact is that we trust these kids to get the job done. We open the door, they walk through it.” I quickly saw the light. Impact is like an Entrepreneurial Academy that uses a management method not uncommon in major corporations: Intrapreneurship. Intrapreneurship is a management style that incorporates risk-taking and innovation within a larger organization. So whether it’s leading a team, chairing a conference, or building a product from scratch, Impact members get hands-on experience in business. They take calculated risks, make decisions, and ultimately they are accountable for the success or failure of their venture. “I Am My Ambition” Over the years I have accumulated a sizable collection of sleepless nights. I regularly abuse the keyboard of my laptop until the early hours of the morning, finally hunching over my desk and falling asleep as the sun creeps into my room. I have a romantic ideal of my writing – an insatiable appetite for clever puns, sophisticatedly simple metaphors, and unnecessary adjectives. I want to write to millions of people and achieve an unrealistic harmony with the written word. I have that ambition. Like most, I am amazed with the notion of ‘an overnight success.’ Too often, I have heard the word ‘lucky’ carelessly thrown around, as if to justify other people’s triumph in the wake of our own failure. It has been my personal opinion that ‘luck’ is dependent on three factors: the right time, the right place, and the right set of skills. Opportunities are presented to all of us every day, but we must be prepared to recognize them for their true potential. Every ‘overnight success’ is prefaced by years of hard work, frustration, and resistance to the most tempting thing of all: Surrender.

Jeff Adams, Paralympic champion and co-founder of Marvel Wheelchairs: After undergoing experimental chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer in the 70s, Jeff was left with spinal cord damage that caused him to be wheelchair bound thereafter. His fascination with sports, however, and his tireless ambition to be ‘the guy who scored the goal,’ led him to victory at the Paralypic Games, six times! In 2002 he climbed the 1,776 steps of the CN Tower, and in 2004 he climbed the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. He is an inductee into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame.

This is the plight of the entrepreneur. He fails, he rebuilds. She struggles, she overcomes. ‘I Am My Ambition’ is a video campaign that reveals the face behind the business. It is a collection of stories told on camera, for the benefit of ambitious youth and aspiring entrepreneurs. Read some of the excerpts that follow and learn as the nation’s top entrepreneurs reveal their biggest challenges and enlighten us with their personal philosophies.

Sarah Prevette, founder of Sprouter.com: “There is an incredible vulnerability in taking an idea that you feel so passionately about and opening it up to criticism.” Sarah’s first entrepreneurial venture was not a success. It was a news-sharing website that quickly ran out of funding. Feeling frustrated and unsupported, she decided to turn her experience into a budding business – an online collaboration tool for entrepreneurs. Sprouter has been featured in The Financial Post and The New York Times, among other notable publications.

Rahul Singh, founder of GlobalMedic: Rahul was a Toronto paramedic. After experiencing the breakdown of a personal relationship, he took some time off and went to work for the United Nations, helping people in Nepal get clean water and medical aid. After funding ran out, the mission was aborted. Shortly afterwards, Rahul found himself having a gourmet meal in a five-star restaurant

After undergoing the devastating loss of his best friend, he immediately decided to start an international aid agency to help provide disaster relief in regions affected by natural disasters and other emergencies.

Entrepreneur Spotlight: David Wilkin, Champion of Interpersonal Marketing As Dave Wilkin strolls into the coffee shop on Queen and Bathurst Street in downtown Toronto, casually sporting a hoodie and a pair of worn-out jeans, a blushing barista greets him and instinctively runs her fingers through her wavy hair. I look down at my little black notebook, unable to suppress my smile. I must have had the same reaction when I first met him the previous year. We’re the same age, Dave and I, and to the unsuspecting pedestrian, he must look like any other college student.

he says. “Companies need to adapt to the times.” The second rule is to connect to students through dialogue. “No more one-way messages!” insists Dave. “Let’s have a conversation with the consumer.” Lastly, and most importantly, the company has to be genuinely interested in students – quick sells are not allowed. “Short-term gain for long-term pain,” he explains, “is just not worth it.”

Dave is the founder of CampusPerks.ca, a marketing company with an unconventional technique. As a Biochemistry student in the University of Waterloo, Dave witnessed the use of traditional marketing techniques by major companies targeting his campus.

Something tells me Dave will continue staying up nights and pitching to companies for a long time to come, though it might take a bit more than a coffee fix to keep him going.

I liked Dave’s approach. It seemed innovative, yet strangely traditional – a throwback to the long-forgotten days of faceto-face communication and human interaction. But I had one last question for Dave: How long is he going to do this for a living? As it stands, he is his target demographic. Will he continue to market to freshmen long after he ages into irrelevance? “I’ll keep doing this until someone fires me,” he laughs. “The key is to have open ears – always listen to students and encourage them to continue the dialogue.”

“Students are extremely valuable to brands,” he explains. “The trick to marketing on a campus is to make it genuine. Don’t interrupt students’ lives with irrelevant ad campaigns and promotions. Companies need to establish a relationship with students through dialogue.” Dave spent several years of his undergrad holding campus events, and he firmly believes that putting the power of the brands behind student initiatives is a way to make the brand relevant to student life. So how exactly does this work? “Any time a campus group can garner enough community support to hold an event, Campus Perks will reward them with free funding or merchandise to make their event a success.” In essence, your next drunken stag party can be sponsored by major corporations? “That’s right,” he grins. “Parties, conferences, charities, you name it. If your community supports it, we’ll make it happen.”

Still, it must be quite a challenge to show major companies that it is worthwhile to build a relationship with students over an extended period of time. Everybody wants a quick hit, after all. “You can’t buy excitement,” Dave explains. “You have to earn it.” Companies that want to work with Dave have to follow three rules. The first is their willingness to change. “The landscape now is different than it was ten years ago,”

Held at the University of Waterloo, Impact Expo is a free conference that is fully run by students, for students. The team is composed of a dynamic group of Waterloo undergraduates from different disciplines but with the same goal: To help students dream big about technology and entrepreneurship. They strive to build the highest traffic, and host over 2,000 students across the Southwestern Ontario Universities. In 2010, Impact Expo took place on Saturday, September 25th in University of Waterloo’s Davis Centre, and featured keynotes, speaker series’, workshops, case studies, networking events, and a large-scale company exhibition. What can Impact Expo offer you?

What can high school students do with $100, ten days, and one challenge? As we’ve found out – A LOT! This past April, Impact hosted its annual Microcredit Competition, supported by Studentawards.com. High school students from across Canada competed, in teams, to turn $100 into $1000 and more. We challenged them to think outside of the box, take their business idea, and hit the ground running! We received hundreds of applications from high schools all over Canada. The competition was intense, and the results were amazing. Our participants came up with fresh ideas, raised thousands of dollars for charity, and most importantly, caught the entrepreneurial bug! I sat down with one of the 2010 Impact Microcredit winners, Jory Wong, to get her perspective on the whole experience.

I live independently in Vancouver, BC – that is, if you can count eight roommates as an ‘independent’ living!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a creative mind and a lot of positive energy. I developed an artistic background spanning from the visual and literary to musical and performing arts, which made my transition to the multimedia field a fairly smooth one. My concentration is now in fine art photography and filmmaking. The latter appeals to me the most, as it requires an incorporation of nearly every artistic and technical field. If I don’t pursue my passion, I feel spiritless and subject to routine – lazy mornings, regular work hours, unwinding in front of the TV, and then back to bed. The motivation to have creative projects consistently on the go is a fundamental part of my lifestyle.

What is your advice for students who are planning to participate next year?

I subscribed to studentawards.com to receive e-newsletters on scholarships and bursaries. At one point, they sent out a notification for the Impact Microcredit 2010 Competition. I’ve always taken an interest in microloans, and I saw the contest as a good opportunity to test-drive a business; it was also a chance at a rewarding scholarship, and it would be a philanthropic contribution regardless of if we won.

Our team learned that it only comes down to a good concept and enough hard work to make it happen. If you focus on the basics, everything else comes naturally. You also need to eliminate your fear of losing, because otherwise you become locked into making conservative decisions.

What was your action plan going into the competition? What did you do to win? Going into the competition, we definitely did not want to do anything that others had done before. Emily (my best friend and teammate) and I wanted to go forward with a project stemming from our personal beliefs, rather than having a generic fundraiser. We eventually decided that we would do something to counter the lack of artwork ownership in our community by marketing works that were both appealing and affordable. We hoped that the success of the project would prove a point, as people would see how artwork ownership is not a thing of the past nor only for the wealthy. We designed two flash websites from scratch and sold artwork online. Our customers could choose from 21 portfolios, 14 of which were submitted by photographers, and the remainder featured traditional media such as drawings and paintings. In addition to the artwork sale, we also remarketed vintage clothing at three live events. For an entry fee of $10, people could fill their pillowcase or backpack with whatever they wanted.

How did you first hear about Impact Microcredit? What motivated you to participate?

We also maximized social media to no end, but we found that it made an immense difference to promote our events in person as well. Especially with a school as large as ours, we had to distinguish ourselves from every other event happening on a daily basis. How did Microcredit change your perception of entrepreneurship? Is it something you would consider doing in the future? It made me more confident in myself, knowing that our success has the potential to grow beyond the ten days. I am currently working in sales, and I am definitely planning to open several philanthropic businesses in Vancouver. Thank you to all the participants! What was the most rewarding aspect of this experience? The most rewarding aspect of this project was that we could attribute almost all of our success to natural instinct and hard work. Having an internal focus of control made me very satisfied. What did you find the most challenging? It was hard to get over the fact that our consumer support was a fair bit smaller than what we expected. Working even harder to overcome it paid off immensely at the end, though at the time it was a big downer. Impact Apprentice

Impact National Conference

Impact Apprentice is an annual hands-on competition in which 32 of Canada’s top postsecondary level students compete in various unique real-life business challenges allowing them to demonstrate their entrepreneurship strength by applying their leadership, teamwork, management and marketing abilities. The Impact team worked tirelessly to make the experience an unforgettable one. The most recent competition took place between August 23, 2010 and August 26, 2010 at the Marriott Toronto Eaton Centre in the heart of Downtown Toronto. The 32 final competitors were chosen out of an amazing group of over 600 applicants. After getting through three intense rounds of selections, including creating videos and having one-hour interviews, the Apprentice team assembled some of the best students in Canada.

For the last seven years, the Impact National Conference has been recognized as Canada’s premier youth entrepreneurship conference. Held annually, the conference attracts 300 of the top high school and post-secondary students from across Canada. This is where youth leaders and like-minded individuals with a passion for entrepreneurship gathered to inspire, learn, educate, and cultivate their peers with the entrepreneurial spirit.

The Apprentice team provided a true overall experience. From catered meals throughout the day, social events at night, and an amazing hotel to stay in, those four days were unforgettable. It is not every day that you can start the day by competing in a business tournament, and end it by going paint-balling!

This two-day conference aimed to inspire and motivate youth to participate in entrepreneurial endeavours while equipping them with the skills needed to become ambassadors for entrepreneurship in their communities.

Students competed in four categories: marketing, sales, negotiation, and innovation. The groups were assessed on their performance in each challenge, and were awarded points accordingly. This experience allowed them to step into the shoes of corporate executives through various unique challenges while being exposed to the top young minds in the country, as well as leaders in the industry. They achieved and surpassed their own expectations, and won $10,000 in prizes.

Impact’s networking activities and workshops provided participants with an opportunity to develop and practice key business skills such as teamwork, strategizing, decision making, taking initiative, practical start-up skills, and creative thinking. In addition, the conference boasted a star-studded lineup of speakers from a wide spectrum of backgrounds including business, entertainment, technology and science. These speakers led a variety of stimulating events designed to enrich delegates’ knowledge on entrepreneurship. Agfa Healthcare eHealth Innovation Competition This event was a case competition that tackled on important issues currently affecting the healthcare industry. Student teams from the University of Waterloo, Queen’s University, and the University of Toronto came together and submitted over 30 proposals! The winners were granted media interviews and a trip to Belgium, where they presented their final case study solution to a panel of Agfa Healthcare executives at their global headquarters!

Past Event

Yahoo! Hack-U Hack-U is a week long coding competition that featured in itself various seminars, workshops, and a culminating case problem, involving a 24-hour hack session into Yahoo’s application. With a delegate representation spanning from the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto, more than 75 participants competed at this major event.
