DIPLOMA PROJECT Molenbeek’s urban service station

atelier Muck Petzet

Directed by prof. arch. Kersten Geers, the AAM Diploma year 2022 consisted in inventing spaces on existing competition sites to solve different areas of the city of Brus sels, under the title Brussels - the Production of Culture, by always keeping in mind a sense of community and sensibility to culture.

Supervised by prof. arch. Muck Petzet, my diploma project consists of a shelter and learning center for the homeless, immigrants, and people in need. It re-qualifies the busy and trafficked area of Sainctelette square in the Molenbeek district by bringing a covered public space equipped with various services such as electricity and water, that descend from the pillars. The square serves different events such as food or goods markets, public gatherings, a relaxing area along the canal, etc.

Its value is enhanced by the wooden structure which respects a grid of 5x5 meters, accomodating on top the shelter studios, a canteen, sanitary and health services, a double-height library looking towards the canal, and a vegetable garden on the roof which generates food to then be eaten or sold in the market-place.

The volume is a rectangle of 50x52,5 meters, contoured in three sides by an offset of 2,5m that serves as an outdoor space for the shelter apartments. There are 36 apartments/studios furnished with bathrooms, living and sleeping area.

The intervention seeks to establish a balance between the social classes present in this area of the city of Brussels.

A LARGE FORM

Rogoredo’s social residence & working space atelier Kersten Geers

The project is located in Rogoredo, a south-east border district of the city of Milan located 6-7 km from the city center. The site has an important proximity to the Rogoredo Station, which is one of the stops of the high-speed rail coming from Milan and reaching as far as southern Italy.

The project represents a high density apartment building which includes around 102 residences targeting new families with low-middle income and 102 ateliers and office spaces for free lance workers as well as artisans.

This creativity hub is composed of 5 stretching stripes which con nect the main station with the residential area. These stripes are clearly noticeable from the outside, wether on the inside they become whole neighborhoods by attaching with each other. Quality spaces are created with the introduction of seven full height voids which represent the interconnection and communal space of both residents and artists.

A passage goes through these voids and crosses the whole building in length. This passage becomes a vertical promenade with seven interconnecting interior courtyards. The lower floors and the passage are devoted to communal uses and ateliers, rentable workshops, exposition spaces, etc. The residential units are based on one or more 37.5-squaremetre modules, which create on different levels dwellings that rang from single-module studios to large multiple-module apartments, duplexes, triplexes and atelier houses.

Partitions between modules may be modified, designed to shift as family structures shift. Outdoor spaces represented by these communal and interactive balconies are always oriented towards the inside of the building overlooking the voids.

ARCHITECTURE OF TRANSITION Temporary immigration centre, port of Motril, Spain

atelier Elisa Valero

The project consists in a clear three dimensional structure locat ed at the very edge of the harbour. This structure creates a filter between the sea and the port, the sea and the city, we could say between Africa and Europe. It portrays a space of transition. The immigrants will be acomodated in this structure for a maximum of 72 hours which made the project become simple and functional, but still trying to create common spaces of interaction. The immigrants will access directly from the sea, and once checked and registered, they will accomodate in the dormito ry area divided in males and females. Each dormitory has its own facilities. The dormitory and the canteen share a big open air square where the inhabitants can spend time and meet. The square has a playground for children, vegetation, shadows, plac es to sit and a fountain.

The structure consists in a 6x6 meters grid which is sealed by simple sandwich pannels covered in pastelle coloured ceramic tiles as an hommage to Granada’s vernacular architecture. The construction is thought to be modular for a fast building proc cess. The building, being so close to the water, is elevated by U shaped concrete blocks to avoid flood. The project tries to bring a colorful and livable environement to people who experienced abundant difficulties to reach Europe.

ELOGIO DE LA LUZ

competition for an elderly housing in Schlieren, CH 3rd Prize von Ballmoos Partner Architekten

As an intern, my contributions to this project were creating the visuals and renders of the object. Together with my proj ect leader, we ideated and shared ideas on how to organise a functional communal elderly centre, where the inhabitants would live in peace and have facilitated accessibility to every function of the building.

UNIVERSAL BUVETTE

Comte-Meuwly, EASA CH

European Architecture Student Assembly of summer 2019 was organised by EASA Switzerland. Here I got the opportunity to participate in the workshop called Universal Buvette organised by the architecture office Comte-Mewly. The workshop consisted in the construction of a thin and light aluminium structure covered by thick plastic. The workshop was published by Hochparterre-Buecher in the form of a magazine.

MANSONRY

Re:EASA Rijeka, Croatia

European Architecture Student Assembly of summer 2018 was organised by EASA Croatia. I partecipated in the workshop Mansonry organised by the architecture office Rooh Studio. The workshop consisted in the production from scratch of terrazzo material. With the terrazzo we then casted some stairs for a pavillion we build in the port of Rijeka.

VEGETABLE GARDEN

Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio

During BSc2 at AAM myself, Arianna Sebastiani, Caterina Zatti, Marie-Sophie Piccoli and Clara Rosenberg created a student collective called “TheActive-Landscape” through which we touched different topics of sustainability in and out of the campus of AAM. One of them was a competition for a vegetable garden which would be implemented in the terrain of the campus with natural methods of perma culture. The project is now completed and is producing vegetables that are being used by the students.

CONFERENCE WITH FRANZ OSWALD

Architettura come dispositivo di comunità

L’Accademia di architettura dedica all’architetto Franz Oswald, professore emerito ETHZ, due incontri pubblici in occasione della pubblicazione di un suo saggio breve dedicato alla Città Ticino.

The collaboration with Franz Oswald started thanks to our di rector Riccardo Blumer. We created a cycle of talks online dur ing the Covid19 pandemic period and completed our disscus sions with this conference. Each of the four students had to choose a piece of art based on the subject we treated the most personally in our talks with Franz Oswald. Desplayed you find the work of art chosen by me, together with the subject to be treated which was that of migration.

PRO-HELVETIA

Competition for Vencie Biennale 2023

After the successful conference on ”Cittá Ticino” dedicated to the honoured professor Franz Oswald, myself, Arianna Sebastiani, Caterina Zatti and Marie-Sophie Piccoli begun a series of online calls together with prof. Riccardo Blumer, prof. Martino Pedrozzi, prof. Franz Oswald and prof. Mario Monotti. As a result we participated in the competition for the Swiss pavillion of Biennale di Venezia 2023 and we successfully passed the first phase. After partecipating in the second phase we were awarded a prize that we intend to use for our further collaborations.

Architettura è territorio, arte di coabitazione equilibrante tra organismi diversi della terra.

- It will be a physical architecture in real scale.

- It will be a social experience, activated only with the presence of the visitors.

- It will refer to Venice as a direct example of architecture that is territory.
