nuggets Bakersfield Utilized in Trial Run for Cannabis-Detecting Swab Test As voters are anticipating legalizing recreational cannabis in California in November, Senator Bob Huff proposed legislation to allow the use of saliva swab tests to detect cannabis and other substances. If Huff’s proposed legislation, Senate Bill 1492, is approved it does not mean that local governments will be required to use such a device. It will however set guidelines for law enforcement interested in using it, according to The Press Enterprise. A trial run for a device similar to the one Huff has proposed was held in Bakersfield and Los Angeles between November 2013 to April 2014. Research revealed that the accuracy of saliva swab tests used in this trial run were 98.9 percent effective. The device used in this trial run was a German manufactured test kit called Dräger.

Kern County Still Struggling to Regulate Medical Cannabis Access The 5th District Court of Appeal in Fresno has stalled the efforts of Kern County officials to shut down medical cannabis collectives. According to Bakersfield Now, the court ruled that the county “erred” Measure G by outright banning collectives, stating that it is in violation of elections codes. Initially, the county was only supposed to shut down collectives in unincorporated areas, but instead they continued to use a civil court process to shut down any and all collectives. On April 12, Kern County supervisors voted to appeal the court’s decision by asking the Supreme Court to freeze the motion. If the court’s decision is fully enacted, Kern County’s medical cannabis laws will revert back to what they were in 2009. According to the The Sunday Californian, this means that all medical cannabis collectives can run as long as they are non-profit, are located 1,000 feet away from schools and comply with California state guidelines for medical cannabis. 10

Bakersfield 420 Evaluations 1708 N. Chester Ave., Bakersfield, 93308 bakers420.com (661) 565-1738

How and when did your certification clinic start up? Our first clinic opened in Los Angeles back in May 2009. What’s the story behind the name of your certification clinic? There really isn’t a story behind our name besides the 420 which is based off SB-420. What does your certification clinic offer patients that they can’t find anywhere else? Real, legitimate doctors that are licensed with the

Medical Board of California. Not only are our doctors legitimate, but our clinic has all of the required licenses and certifications needed to operate under Medical Board standards. How has the medical cannabis scene in Bakersfield changed since you have been in business? It’s only getting bigger. The first few years, we thought business would be coming to an end soon, but as the years have gone by, business just keeps growing.

How do you see the Bakersfield medical cannabis scene growing or changing in the future? Is there anything patients can do to help? I see the medical marijuana industry getting bigger and better as long as rules and regulations are followed. There are some collectives out there that ruin it for others who are trying to make the industry legitimately work for more years to come. So, my advice to those who are trying to get into the industry is very simple: Just follow the rules. If someone wanted to open a certification clinic to get their feet wet in the industry, what advice or counsel would you give them?

Although it is tough to compete with our clinic, due to the fact that our clinic has established a well-known reputation with the surrounding communities, my advice to those who are looking to get into the business is just to do it properly. I cannot explain or get into details on how to do that but it is a long list of requirements. Keep in mind that regulations change frequently, so everything always has to be updated. What other information would you like to add? I would just like to thank all our patients old and new for keeping their loyalty with our company. c

strain

Big Al’s OG

Available at: The Healthy Healing Collective in Bakersfield.

Big Al’s OG is super and you will be thankful you asked for it at the Healthy Healing Collective in Bakersfield. This flower is fairly standard looking, small dense, dark green nugs that have a faint non-descript odor. The buds have been expertly manicured and crumbled perfectly for packing in a bowl. Although the bud may not be particularly remarkable, the hearty down on the farm taste is a good prognostication for a truly remarkable smoking experience. Big Al’s OG spreads swiftly through your body, and then fills your head with the pleasures that only good green can produce. The OG effects are very pronounced with alertness and heightened interest in your surroundings. Although you will know exactly where you are, don’t be surprised if you find yourself in a somewhat different world then you thought you were in.

Diamond 99

Available at: Hwy 99 Collective in Bakersfield.

Marilyn Monroe seductively cooed “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” and Diamond 99 from the Hwy 99 Collective in Bakersfield will definitely be our best friend too. With a compact green nug covered in dense crystal trichomes, the pliable and sticky bud beckons to be sampled. A rough and ready sharp taste swirls on the roof of your mouth foretelling the potency of this unique strain. Acting fairly quickly with a rush to the back of the head, a deeply sensual state of relaxation ensues that permeates all your senses producing a vibrancy that borders on hallucinogenic. This does not produce couch-lock, as you will have no difficulty in doing whatever has to be done, but if there is nothing that has to be done, you will most likely just lay back, hands behind your head and enjoy the bling of this fantastic diamond.

Big Chief’s Forum Cut Cookies Forum Cut Cookies is one of the multiple phenotypes that has sprung from the now legendary and immensely popular Girl Scout Cookies. Mind-warping, spacey, giggly, uplifting and euphoric are terms used to describe the powerful effects of any Cookies strains. The Big Chief’s Forum Cut Cookies found at the Bakersfield Gas Co. emulate every one of those qualities and more. Tight, pineapple-shaped nugs have a heavy covering of long stemmed trichomes. That there is a cookie aroma, especially evident when the bud is broken apart, confirms its lineage. Take a deep hit, close your eyes and experience the potent gust rushing up with a headband effect wrapping around the eyes as it expands into a powerful cerebral experience. Remaining alert and in good form, experienced users will be able to function normally, but casual and infrequent users may find it a bit disorienting.

Available at: Bakersfield Gas Co.

Big Al’s SFU 06 Available at: Patient Wellness Center in Bakersfield.

Big Al is becoming a household name around cannasseurs in Central California. This Big Al’s SFU 06 only makes us love his catchy name even more. Mediumsized, compact, olive-green nugs have a great covering of red hairs and a frosty blanket of trichomes. The effect of this strain is powerful, strong and slow rolling. Steady euphoria and mood enhancing pain-relief come on to the scene quietly, but make for a great nighttime effect. For people suffering from depression, anxiety or stress, this is a great strain for you. A pleasant and relaxing strain, SFU 06 is bound to be in our permanent rotation.

Gabriel Iglesias Revisits Bakersfield, the Place Where it all Started In this month’s issue of CULTURE we highlight comedian Gabriel Iglesias where we learn of the comic’s many successes and his stance on cannabis legalization. What we didn’t learn is that Iglesias started his comedy career in good ol’ Bakersfield. “Bakersfield is one of those cities where I first started, and the Fox Theater is very special; it has a very special place in my heart,” Iglesias told Bakersfield Now. As a matter of fact,

18

MAY 2016 iReadCULTURE.com

Iglesias’ very first comedy special “Hot and Fluffy” was filmed at the Fox Theater in Bakersfield in 2007. “It was the first time I ever played a theater, at The Fox, 12 years ago,” Iglesias said, “It made a lot of sense. I’m a weird dude and I like the fact it was 10 years later exactly. Why not come back and do my first big special in the first theater I ever played in? That’s almost poetic.” During this special the comedian jokes about his time living in Bakersfield “I have way too many good memories here,” Iglesias says before going

on to joke about local law enforcement and the locally notorious city Oildale. This past January, Iglesias showed the city more love by coming back to Bakersfield to film a segment for his Fuse TV series, Fluffly Breaks Even, which highlights the comedian’s fitness journey and road travels while featuring his favorite food spots at each stop. “They’re gonna be shooting parts of Bakersfield so we’re gonna get Bakersfield on TV one more time,” stated Iglesias before shooting began. In the episode, Iglesias

highlights top-rated restaurants and businesses in Bakersfield, including the local Pyrenees Café, a local Taco Truck, and a great workout of wrestling with Bakersfield’s own Brett Clark and an Olympic-style wrestling team. Although Iglesias has gone on to star in a number of comedy series and movies, working side by side with the likes of Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans, he does not forget where he got his start and continues to hold a special place in his heart for Bakersfield. c
