places demands upon the vessel her original builders and owners, by good fortune, seemed blithely unconcerned with. Consequently, May 2018 seems a more likely month in which a fully refit Ilen might takeup her operational role once more. The challenge and pleasure of rebuilding the Ilen, to the high standard she now enjoys, within a community building dynamic, perhaps accounts for the actualisation of what for the many involved - is an inescapable and implacable idea. Of course progress, in the rebuilding of the Ilen, is a relative term, and a common-community in today’s Ireland can only work within the greater socio-economic theatre wherein it performs its role. But regardless of moderate progress and the constraints of modernity - what this Deck cargo on the Ilen, Falklands, 1972 rebuild project has demonstrated, is that communities today, as in the past, possess a mysterious and intuitive yearning to make and enjoy vernacular objects beautiful objects. Invariably the slaking of this desire gives rise to much intellectual speculation among Ilen’s lay participants, as outcomes fit not the greater marketplace narrative in ways recognisable or formulaic. Nevertheless, hands-on craft endeavour is as valid today, as ever it was in communities manifesting, expressing and celebrating their unique cultural calibration. The creation of new environments to sustain meaningful and rewarding craft livelihoods for individuals - in a strong community context, is a worthwhile and viable enterprise. An imperceptible mutation is unfolding in the transition of Ilen from a land, to a sea creature, and the felt experience of her lifting to the surge of a great Atlantic swell, may not yet be too far away. Finally, an imaginative intergenerational and intercommunity project has been moulded from the crucible of this rebuilding process a process which is keenly celebrated annually at the wonderful Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival.”

THE GANDELOW The Ilen Project Gandelow boats are regular visitors to the Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival. Primarily a flat bottomed boat from the Shannon Estuary, the motive power before the arrival of outboard engines were oars, and the men who pulled them. Limerick City Gandelow communities, who were furthest east and up-river from the fishing ground, were inclined to equip their boats with a modest spritsail. This allowed them apprehend a prevailing westerly wind for propelling east and home their boats and tired bodies after a long day’s fishing. Matt Dirr, a consummate shipwright, and no stranger to Baltimore, has gifted much craft to the ketch ‘Ilen’. He took it upon himself to revive the skill A Limerick City Gandelow sailing on the River Shannon, Limerick, of downwind Gandelow sailing - a new sail, mast, for the first time in fifty years. Matt Dirr at the helm. and the partner which supports it, was exquisitely fashioned for a Gandelow - this is the only way Matt know how to approach a task. It could be fifty years since the last Limerick Gandelow was sailed with the fabric of local Ranks flour sacks. Make sure you get to see Matt and his elegant creation at this year’s festival.

of Ballydehob (Rui Ferreira and Anke Eckardt) report on two interesting projects currectly underway. Saucy Sue: a 22ft clinker boat from Kenmare, Larch on Oak. She is believed to have been used as a rowing ferry about 100 years ago, kept in a shed in Kenmare for decades. At some stage an inboard motor was put into her, causing extensive damage to ribs and planking because she wasn’t suitably reinforced. Ten sections of planking had to be replaced, as well as all steamed frames, stringers and gunwhales. The lower section of the stem was also replaced. Flying Fish: She is a beautiful classic one off, built for a Mr W. D. Kilroy to his own design by Primmer & Snook, of Hampshire in 1936. At some stage she was chartered out to a television company for a soap opera on Bute. Later she was kept at Loch Creran, then sold on to Joff McPherson, who sailed her in Schull (and in this festival!) until 2015. Now she belongs to Captain David O’Brien, who hopes to take her to the med. “We have been doing a complete restoration on her, from the bottom up - reverting her to her original design and keeping her old pieces as much as possible. She is due to be finished in July.”

AN CRUACHAN, A LOUGH FYNE SKIFF Loch Fyne skiffs are sailing vessels built in Argyll, that formed the backbone of the west of Scotland’s vast herring fleet in times past. They originally set a standing lug mainsail and a foresail on a bowsprit. They are reputed to have been one of the best small fishing boats ever produced in British waters, and many were converted into yachts. An Cruachan, a gaff cutter 121 years old this year, is a fine example and is just completing repairs at Hegarty’s after suffering damage in a storm in Crookhaven a few years ago. It is thought that only four originals survive, and three are reputed to be in Ireland (though many replicas have been built). An Cruachan has had many frames, planks, and the coach roof replaced, and as we go to press she The raking stern of An Cruachan, a feature is expected to be commmon to Scottish “double enders” and ready for the festival. inherited from the Viking tradition.

THE ARDRALA SIX OAR RACING GIG The highlight of West Cork regattas, up until around 1970, was always the rowing races between carvel built gigs that were up to 32’ long. There was great rivalry involved and they were firecely competitive races in which all sorts of shenanigans took place. There was, and still is, great pride in the achievements of the crews from each community involved. Some of these boats still exist in storage, and Cuas, The West Cork Maritime Heritage Company CLG started restoration of one of them, the Ardrala gig in 2015. She was built by the Mahonys of Castletownshend in 1956. The work is being carried out by enthusiasts from Ardrala, Reengaroga and Baltimore – the community of Ardrala also raised significant funds to support the work. She suffered minor damage during storage, so she was first set up on a strongback and braced, so that distortions to her shape could be corrected. To date 38 new oak ribs have been steamed in, bilge stringers have been repaired and refitted, and a new laminated ash stem post has been fitted. Repairs to the gunwhales and stern are underway, and soon she will be ready for turning over so that a large number of planks can be replaced with Sitka spruce. Oars will then be made, also out of Sitka Spruce.

ra ts , G ts Esthet Collen PZ 232, lying at Oldcourt, with prop, engine, deck house and other gear removed
A fishing boat described by the National Historic Ships Register of the UK as a classic example of a Scottish Motor Fishing Vessel (MFV) is coming sadly but inevitably to the end of her days at Old Court. She is the 52’ long side trawler MFV Esther Colleen, built in 1938 By MacDuff in the north of Scotland of larch on oak for a Cornish owner, and registered as PZ 232. In 1983 she was heading out of Brixham in fog for a day’s fishing when she hit the Type 21 frigate HMS Ambuscade, which was anchored only a few hundred yards out to sea off the Brixham breakwater. The collision led to an angry reaction from Mr. Bob Curtis, the Brixham pilot, who claimed “the frigate was anchored in a daft place.” Though taking on water from damaged bows she was towed in by another trawler and beached. Following this accident she was substantially rebuilt and given a new redwood deck. She fished out of Brixham from 1974 until 1999 at which point she was sold by the Stevensons to the present owner. She was used in aquaculture in West Cork since 2002, and was then laid up in Church Strand for some years. She was brought up to Hegarty’s at Old Court for repairs late last year , but unfortunately a survey revealed that she was too far gone to be saved – the rot was worse around the bows that had been damaged in 1983. Her engine at least in her latter years was a 6-cylinder 270 HP DAF.

Built at Porthleven in Cornwall in 1929, the Peel Castle, 50’ on deck, was orginally a fishing lugger. She is now a familiar sight in Baltimore where she was rebuilt as a three masted sailing lugger with a Bisquine rig. Her raking masta are a distinctive feature. She is currently hauled out at Hegarty’s Boat Yard at Oldcourt undergoing a periodic re-fit. See https://www.facebook. com/sailingluggerpeelcastle
