2015 CO2 emissions
By choosing Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight to cross the Channel,
KCT LOGISTICS LTD can be assured of the lowest CO2 emissions.
The CO2 emissions produced in transporting a truck with Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight are reduced on average to only 8.8kg of CO2 compared to 158kg with a ferry between Dover and Calais.*
An unbeatable green performance! Respecting the environment: one of Groupe Eurotunnel’s core values The Channel Tunnel and its rail transport system have a number of environmental advantages, making Eurotunnel Le Shuttle the most environmentally friendly cross-Channel operator.
A valuable long term partner As your cross-Channel partner, we can help you in your tenders to demonstrate your own commitment towards the environment when choosing to cross with Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight.
Disclaimer: Should this report be used in the context of a tender, Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight is able to supply all cross-Channel CO2 emissions data for a specific end-customer providing prior consent is obtained from the haulier. *This difference is justified from the fact that Eurotunnel Le Shuttle uses French electricity which is heavily decarbonised whilst ferries burn fossil fuel oil. This energy consumption is directly attributable to freight shuttles, operating through dedicated terminals and therefore directly measurable and convertible into CO2 using EDF ratios. Data for ferries has been gathered independently by JMJ Conseil and based on detailed ships and routes characteristics specific to the Dover Straits. The allocation of fuel consumption to freight vehicles has been based on the relative weight of ships structures devoted to each vehicle segment. On average this results in a 30%-40% share of CO2 emission allocated to freight vehicles (100% for dedicated freighters) and 60-70% to tourist vehicles. Independent study conducted in 2010 by JMJ Conseil.
Groupe Eurotunnel - Leading the way in sustainable transport A commitment from the outset, a challenge every day Groupe Eurotunnel has been committed to the environment since its conception and design of the electrically powered Channel Tunnel in the early 1980s. Continuous initiatives are being introduced to further reduce its impact on the environment to demonstrate Eurotunnel’s green credentials.
Groupe Eurotunnel in brief Since the inauguration of its commercial in 1994, Groupe Eurotunnel has enabled its customers to save around 3.6M tonnes of CO2e when compared to using other cross-Channel operators. • A transport system which makes it possible to cross the Channel without the slightest interaction with the marine ecosystem. • S huttles powered by low carbon* electricity, with a much smaller carbon footprint than its competitors. • Further investment in 14 new electric vehicles by Groupe Eurotunnel to complement the fleet of vehicles already utilised on the terminals and installation of new electric charging points for Le Shuttle customers. • Outstanding record of maintaining and developing biodiversity at its UK site and improvement of biodiversity and habitats as part of the Freight Terminal expansion project in France. • Groupe Eurotunnel publishes a detailed Corporate Social Responsibility Report each year, available online at www.eurotunnelgroup.com * 0.045 kg CO2e/kWh (ADEME)
At a glance… • On the 25th anniversary of the first ever junction under the Channel, when British and French tunnelling teams met for the first time in the service tunnel, Euronext has selected Groupe Eurotunnel to join the new version of the Low Carbon 100 Europe index.† This is seen as the reward for 25 years of continuous commitment to actions in support of the environment. • T he first international rail and cross-Channel operator to have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard, Eurotunnel obtained renewal of its certification by the prestigious independent British agency, the Carbon Trust, for achieving a 3% reduction in emissions every year since 2008. •E urotunnel has set up an accounting system of its greenhouse gas emissions and achieved a further reduction of 6% in 2014. •E lectricity consumption reduced on both terminals by adopting new technologies such as power solar water heaters and installing new energy efficient boilers. • S amphire Hoe’s nature reserve located at the foot of Dover Cliff and owned by Groupe Eurotunnel received its 11th consecutive Green Flag Award which recognises the best managed green spaces in England and Wales. A new initiative to engage with the local community was the build of a new education shelter for children. The index measures the performance of the 100 largest companies in Europe with the lowest levels of Carbon emissions in their sector. The selection is made following an in depth evaluation of the Carbon footprint of each company and is made by a Scientific Committee composed of experts from NGOs, public bodies and the financial sector.
