IWC Moscow Monthly Bulletin - March 2017
Notes from the Newsletter Team
It’s March already and the spring is nearly here! Never mind the snow covering the streets, we’re almost done with the frosty days of Moscow and we’ve got so much to hope for from March. The snow on the streets will soon melt, we will celebrate the international women’s day on March 8th and we’re having a glamorous event towards the end of the month, namely our famous “Embassies of the World Dinner and Ball” on March 25th!
As a nice touch to celebrating the coming of spring and the international women’s day, you may visit an exhibition that commemorates one of the most significant names in history of art and feminism, the wonderful Frida Kahlo at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition will run until the beginning of next month so if you still haven’t visited it, you may enjoy Japanese artist Yasumasa Morimura’s “History of Self-Portrait” exhibit where he dedicates a special section for Frida Kahlo as well. In the meantime, the International Women’s Club of Moscow is getting ready to enjoy a glittering event to celebrate the coming of spring. There are only a few days left to our exciting Ball and the early bird discount is almost over. Check out the relevant pages for further details. This month’s Meet&Greet will be hosted at the Residence of the Japanese Ambassador on March 23rd. The same early bird also tells me that the guests will have the privilege of enjoying a performance of Japanese Music. The number of guests is limited and it’s a members-only event this time. So don’t forget to register through the link provided in the Save the Date page below. The change in the air also had a nice effect on our traditional professional evening events. Please read below to learn more about it. Isn’t it wonderful to be offered so many different and high quality events just being a member of IWC? Come by the next coffee morning and learn more about them! Sincerely yours, Irem Sunar-Ozat Editor | Newsletter Team IWC Moscow iwcmnews@gmail.com

Invitation to the International Women’s Evening Previously known as Professional Women’s Evenings, the name has been changed because every woman is welcome whether they are working or not.
What is the concept of these evenings? We all know that the IWC is a non-profit organisation aiming to promote friendship and cultural exchange between women of all nationalities in Moscow. Our membership mainly consists of women who have followed their husbands on diplomatic or business assignments, and of female business professionals who have come to Russia in connection with their own careers. We started the Professional Women's Evenings in 2014 to create an opportunity for socializing and networking between working expat women (guests) and IWC members. Some of our IWC members are working and some are not, but like to keep up with developments in business life even though they have put their own career temporarily on hold. The purpose of the evenings is to be inspired by a lecture given by a working woman and to exchange information. If you know such a woman whom you think could be a possible, guest speaker; please let me know. The next International Women’s Evening will take place on Monday 27th of March at the Russian Language School, 11 old Arbat street, (metro station Arbatskaya dark blue line and light blue line). If you are interested, please send me an email and I will send you the details which also will be announced shortly on the website of the IWC and on our Facebook page. I hope to see you all in our next evening event! Kind regards, Mirjam Severin iwcpwe@gmail.com

INTEREST GROUP IN SPOTLIGHT This month we’re looking more into the Matryoshka Painting Course taught by Zhanna Nikolaev for the IWC members. We can list these fundamentals as:
Zhanna, what should the members expect from your courses? The course is designed for those interested in learning the fundamentals of painting Matryoshka nested dolls.
✦ Origins, history and insights into the painting of matryoshka dolls ✦ Traditional stories depicted on matryoshka dolls ✦ Selection of proper blanks and surface preparation ✦ Types of finishes and their application ✦ Layout, including techniques for mapping flat images onto curved surfaces ✦ Substrates and base coats ✦ Paint selection and preparation ✦ Painting techniques and sequence
How do you organise the lessons? Lessons can be scheduled at the group’s convenience on any days. Typically, we meet at one or more of the participants’ homes, as mutually agreed. The classes are charged on an hourly basis. Most of the students opt for a 150-minute lesson, which appears to be an optimal duration.
IWC Moscow Monthly Bulletin - March 2017 -10
Can you tell us more about the costs of these classes? The hourly (45-minute) rate is 900 RUBl per person. The all-in price for complete set of materials is 4000 RUBL. per person. Job Vacancies in IWC Moscow There is a lot you can do with your skills and experience, and there is a lot you can gain in return when you take part in different roles in IWC. Check out the vacancies in our Steering Committee and Charities teams below. Send an e-mail to iwcgeneralofficer@gmail.com or contact our Steering Committee members at one of our meetings if you’re interested in being part of the IWC team. Let’s hear from one of our Steering Committee members about why she decided to work for IWC: DANIELLE KUZNETSOV - IWC Charities Co-Chair I decided to volunteer for IWC for many reasons. Here are a few: 1. To make and build relationships with women from different countries. 2. To learn from these same women and expand my life experience. 3. To find a place where my life experience could be put to good use in a community. 4. To relax and enjoy the company of other women. 5. To have the opportunity to create something that benefits others. To give back in return for all I had been given. Here is what I found at IWC - intelligent, kind, caring, BEAUTIFUL women who share their talents and experiences together and enjoy what they do. I have only been here four months, but I feel energised, positive, like a contributor, and HAPPY. When I think about my work and those whom I work with, I have a smile on my face. In seeking to meet some of my needs as a woman, I have been able to meet the needs of others. For me, IWC is a place to belong.
