When I see our new students enter campus through the Griffith Memorial Arch at the beginning of each academic year, I remember snippets of my own college days. The first night in the residence hall of Southern State College, in Magnolia, Arkansas, I shivered in a cold room, not able to find a thermostat and not having packed a blanket. But morning came. My roommate moved in. We found the thermostat. Classes began. Friends, hard work, home sickness, professors and arduous assignments opened my world. During the next four years, I gathered eggs in a hen house, wrote essays, gave speeches, read Faulkner and Welty, saw plays, used the word “angst,” discovered deep faith, operated a centrifuge, fell in love, directed a play and threw a mean frisbee. Like our students now, I learned through experience. A particular example stands out. During my junior and senior years, in the not highly sought after position of Associate of Baptist Students prayer breakfast chair, it was my job to do the grocery shopping each Thursday afternoon, then early each Friday to prepare the pancake batter, warm the syrup, and present a brief lesson on Christian faith. Though I did not know it at the time, that experience taught me a valuable lesson for family and professional life. Show people you love them if you expect them to listen to you. The better the pancakes, the better the lectures. Many of us have memories of educational experiences that influence us well beyond graduation. I hope you enjoy this FindlayMag issue featuring a few of those captivating stories from UF. Sincerely,

On Call: UF Home to Telehealth Center If you have questions or concerns about the medication you’ve been prescribed, one of the University of Findlay pharmacy students may end up providing the answers and solutions via its Telehealth Center. The center opened in 2016 in an effort to provide a learning laboratory for students on campus, and to provide a place where didactic teachings could be applied directly to patients throughout the nation. The center, which contracts with pharmacies, uses video conferencing, telephone and online interactions to assist patients. Student interns and graduate assistants, working alongside pharmacists, provide one-on-one care that encompasses the assessment and evaluation of a patient’s complete medical status, including medication therapy regimen and disease state management. By talking directly with patients, caregivers and providers, students gain valuable experience while positively impacting patients’ lives. Students identify possible side-effects or problems with medication regimens, troubleshoot existing problems, recommend different drug regimens if necessary, provide guidelines for preventing future medication issues, and offer tips for taking medication. Students are also able to aid the patients in understanding health care goals and how to achieve them. Since the program was launched, disease-specific chronic care management and medication reconciliation were added as additional clinical programs. University of Findlay Telehealth Center supervisors include Director Sothea Phon, Pharm.D. '11, Assistant Director Kathleen (Brown) Alt, Pharm.D.' 16, and Megan Conaway, Pharm.D. Students can apply to work at the Telehealth Center beginning their freshman year. Assignments and responsibilities vary according to year, experience and classwork completed. “So many patients don’t understand their medication. Sometimes, for one or more of their medications, they don’t know when they’re supposed to take it or what it’s even for,” said Libby Stabler, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Payne, Ohio who recently ranked fourth in the country out of thousands of competitors in a Rite Aid Corporation telehealth competition. “In reviewing their telehealth cases, we look at each patient in a full health overview, not just their medication,” explained Stephani Busick, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Liberty Center, Ohio. “With that, we can educate them on why it’s important to follow the medication instructions and help them figure out why they may be having side effects.”

The facility is enabling enhanced digital storytelling experiences, and serves as UF’s offcampus home for the Center for Digital Storytelling and Participatory Media. Fridays at Findlay breakfast lecture series has featured intriguing speakers, such as U.S. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden in March 2018. This fall’s lineup also packed a punch by featuring Kevin Sauder, President/CEO of Sauder Woodworking Co., a panel of professionals who spoke about Cincinnati Zoo’s Fiona the hippo, and UF basketball coach Ron Niekamp and panelists.
The University has recently had stellar national rankings. U.S. News & World Report ranked UF as one of the best regional universities in the Midwest, at No. 37 out of 172 schools on the list, and named it a “Best Value School” for affordability for 2019. The Princeton Review also ranked UF as one of the best four-year institutions in the Midwest
EQUESTRIAN EXCELLENCE UF’s western equestrian team won its sixth Intercollegiate Horse Show Association national championship in May, 2018. Also at the competition, Morgan Kerr placed first in open reining, Julia Roshello was the best in advanced horsemanship, and Brandon Morin won gold in novice horsemanship.
On Aug. 1, UF became entirely tobacco free. The use of all products that contain nicotine is prohibited throughout campus. Policy updates and marketing efforts are being funded with a $15,500 grant from the American Cancer Society’s TobaccoFree Generation Campus Initiative.

he Hainleys' story of love and compassion began decades ago on campus, and continues to inspire others nearly 300 miles away. When Twila Jean Beery Hainley ’59 looks back on her childhood, her heart is filled with memories of moving about from the boiler room to the third floor of then Findlay College’s Old Main building. Her father, Elza Logan Beery, was the very first graduate of Winebrenner Theological Seminary, established in 1942 as a graduate school of theology of Findlay College. Beery was an ordained minister for the Churches

of God Mission congregations, was an integral Findlay College fundraiser during World War II, and served on the college’s Board of Directors in the 1960s. “I can just see my Dad's office near the stairs of the second floor (of Old Main) and the chapel nearby,” Twila Jean said. “I was so privileged to roam around back then!” From the front window of her former house on Main Street—a house long replaced by a commercial building—she could see the Griffith Memorial Arch. “We’ve been tied to this school for as long as I can remember,” she added. Twila Jean and her husband Kermit Hainley ’63, are members of a family that boasts many graduates of Findlay College. The couple met at an Oilers football game, and have been virtually inseparable ever since. That connection, they said, the one that led them to meet and move through their education at Findlay College, is the same connection that guided them to start and eventually flourish with Eagle Village, the haven they founded some 50 years ago. They were able to take what they learned at college, build upon it and successfully create meaningful lives for numerous troubled children over the decades.

Hersey, Michigan is located in the northwest portion of the state’s “mitten” formation, near Cadillac. Eagle Village is set back off of the main road, and covers more than 600 acres of sprawling, thicklywooded ground. There’s little to no cell phone service, and upon first glance, the facility looks much like every other camp; there are cabins tucked back among the red pines, and crystal-clear swimming pools behind a small grassy hill. Red canoes dot the landscape around the lake. But there’s something different about this place. Something, the Hainleys said, that starts with the heart. “We used to work mainly with delinquent children,” Twila explained. “Today we have hurting children. Kids who have been neglected, abused, rejected. A lot of trauma. The situation has changed, but the way we handle it overall has not.” “We handle it with more heart than head,” Kermit added. Eagle Village serves children with behavioral issues and their families. It began with a call from God to start a small
group home for four boys in 1968, and has developed into a 75-bed residential facility. The Hainleys retired from their fulltime positions in 1994, but remain involved by assisting other family members who operate Eagle Village, which serves those in need in many ways. Along with being a temporary home, the location also offers intervention camps for hurting families and children, a charter school that provides job skills and other necessary training, and an adoption program. Programs that teach resiliency are also offered to schools, organizations and athletic teams. Ultimately, Eagle Village offers help and hope for the kids and families who find themselves desperate for both. One of the primary philosophies promoted is: their past does not have to determine their future. Having just celebrated its 50th anniversary in early summer of 2018, the facility has much to be proud of. If there is one thing that is immediately noticeable about the Hainleys, it’s that their excitement and eagerness to tell their story bubbles over at a nearly constant pace. A pride for both their alma mater and the life that came after is always right under the surface. “We teach these kids that they reap what they sow,” said Twila, touching upon what the two call the “Seed Planting Principles.” Developed by Kermit and based on Bible verses following “spiritual principles for relationships, family and friendships,” the principles, they say, are the foundation of all programs at Eagle Village. “These are the kids, who, if they clean up their act, will actually be the outcast of their family,” Kermit explained. “The pattern continues until they come here.” But many happy stories can be told as a result of the care families receive from Eagle Village. “At our 50th anniversary celebration, a man who was one of the first Village
residents, and at the time, had extreme issues, surprised us with a visit to help us celebrate,” Twila said. “He’s now a millionaire entrepreneur.” Another Eagle Village graduate “is now at college studying social work because she wants to help people like we helped her. Lots of success,” continued Twila. Along with serving families in need, the Michigan endeavor is a multigenerational family affair too. From Twila’s parents volunteering early in the facility’s life, to Twila and Kermit’s children and now grandchildren—of which there are currently three on staff—the family continues to have a heart for families and children with behavioral issues.
Family Ties
The phenomenon of Hainley generations moving through their lives together, and their collective dedication to serving many of the community’s most vulnerable members, are attributes that started and were nurtured at Findlay College. “Since I lived right there when I was young,” Twila explained, "the college was an anchor and active part of my life for 25 years.” The span of roots and family members runs deep and long for the Hainleys at Findlay College. Family graduates of the institution date back to 1927. Twila’s mother graduated from Findlay in 1931. Both her and Kermit’s brothers studied and played football on the same team at the College. Twila’s father was honored by Findlay in 1981 as a Distinguished Alumnus, and the Hainleys themselves were both awarded the honor in 1986. As Findlay College has become the University of Findlay and Eagle Village moves forward from its 50th year, meaningful lives continue to be guided

between the two institutions; the comparison is not lost on Twila. “Our lives have certainly been meaningful to youth, staff and families as related to Eagle Village, and we are proud of today’s UF students,” she said. “They pursue a career path, but are still challenged to be an active part of their own community, blessing people who live there. To me, that all says meaningful living. Lots of folks who come through here say their lives began at Eagle Village. Ours together began at Findlay College.” Eagle Village welcomes all contact and support, and continues to be committed to serving and equipping children and their families for success. Mazza Museum’s Curator is a Master Storyteller By Joy Brown

he disembodied head hung in a dark hallway. It was covered in jet-black fur and topped with tusks. Dan Chudzinski and his cousins, carrying flashlights, cautiously approached it. Shining the beams at the fierce monster, they screamed and ran. Uncle Mike was right – “The eyes will follow you!” Chudzinski, the University of Findlay Mazza Museum curator, was raised on vivid tales such as “The Haunted Boar,” a treasured childhood memory from his visits to family in northern Michigan that still looms large. He now brings his own narratives to life with imaginative wit and artistic two- and three-dimensional masterpieces. Influenced by folklore, fantasy and the natural world, Chudzinski, who has deservedly earned a reputation as the consummate storyteller on campus, uses these talents to inspire a love of learning and curiosity about the unknown. For Chudzinski, Uncle Mike’s scary stories were just the start of lifelong adventures. He has worked with animals at the Toledo Zoo and learned taxidermy, which was partly inspired by his uncle’s boar head. He studied marble carving in the same Italian valley where Michelangelo honed his craftsmanship. He has worked in Los Angeles, California for a special effects studio. For the past three summers, he has lived with the Tlingit clan in southeastern Alaska, learning their rich oral traditions and apprenticing under their master carvers.
The polar bear sculpture was commissioned by renowned illustrator Greg Manchess and the Norman Rockwell Museum for an exhibition featuring works for Manchess' novel, "Above the Timberline." Dan Chudzinski's work, comprised of foam, epoxy, steel, mounting hardware and acrylic paint, is a life-sized rendering of "Grim," the lead polar bear in the story. Chudzinski's artistic interpretation was partly inspired by Marty, the Toledo Zoo's enormous male polar bear, whom Chudzinski felt "provoked the same imposing presence as Grim does in the book." The exhibition, taking place at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, will run through Feb. 24, 2019.

“I travel the world looking for good stories,” Chudzinski said, particularly those tinged with imagination, and harboring magic. He emphasized he is “interested in that gray area, right between what we know for certain and what we don’t, and the possibilities that exist there." “It’s OK that mythology and legend blend with the truth, because that’s heritage. History is the stone cold facts, but also the legends become part of the history too, and the folklore, and the tradition,” he said. Lately, Chudzinski’s home studio has been housing proprietary work he is creating for Hollywood studios. He is developing a name for himself in the film industry, thanks in part to his earning the Stan Winston School of Character Arts’ 2018 Monster Making Contest grand prize. His mixedmedia sculpture, “The Ripper,” has hints of all of Chudzinski’s favorite movie creatures that the studio, under the direction of his idol, the late Stan Winston, developed, ranging from the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” to the Terminator. At Mazza, some of Chudzinski’s creations are there too, hanging high overhead as “Bessie” the mythical Lake Erie monster, and throughout his backroom office adjacent to the Museum’s art vault, via the conjured “Vifflegriffe” and real crocodile hide, the latter of which is used to entice younger visitors to read “Peter Pan,” a classic tale that features a crocodile as Captain Hook’s nemesis. It’s the stories behind the artistic renderings, and the historical facts, that breathe life into an otherwise antiseptic informational encounter, says Chudzinski.
“Good art is storytelling,” Chudzinski pointed out. “It’s a form of visual communication that transcends language and cultural barriers.” Therefore, the Mazza Museum, he said, “is all about celebrating storytellers historically and continuing that tradition.” With children, he hopes to draw the attention of the ambivalent student who otherwise doesn’t care. With adults, he’d like to remind them that their childhood dreams are always still percolating, and that it’s OK, if not fundamental, to be inquisitive. At the Mazza Museum, Chudzinski seeks to inspire curiosity and creativity in people of all ages. “The literal translation in Latin for ‘curator’ means ‘to care for.’ I take that a step farther than just looking after the art that’s in the collection. It’s my goal to give you a reason to care for it,” he said, and to “be an advocate for other artists and other storytellers.”

What, according to Chudzinski, makes a really good story? The following are what he believes are the necessary elements: • Proper Timing. It contributes to the ambiance and the mood, sets aside everyday attributes, and removes the audience from the familiar for fuller immersion. • Resonance. There must be something that most people can relate to and see a part of themselves in. That’s why people travel to historic places, Chudzinski said – “Because you’re there. It’s sacred ground. You have a reliquary of the event and that makes it even more poignant.” • Credibility. “In order for the audience to accept it, there has to be elements of the familiar,” he said.

“My mission is not to convince everyone around me to be a Catholic,” said Ahrns. “My mission is simply to journey with people, respect their views and opinions, listen and talk with them, and serve as a witness to love.”

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Ahrns received the University’s Founders’ Daughter Award in 2017, which recognizes students who exemplify ideals of superior scholarship, leadership, service to others and personal integrity. In Australia, she and four other missionaries visit three primary schools and one high school, where they assist with religious education classes, plan and lead youth groups, host community events, minister at daily and weekly masses, speak at school assemblies and remain as a constant presence to build relationships. “We are ‘storytellers’ in the way we get to share our personal experiences with young people,” Ahrns said of her missionary work and that of others’. Ahrns believes she is “meant to be a missionary” her entire life, “not as someone who tries to force others to know Jesus, but as someone who is a living witness of authentic love every day to everyone I encounter,” she said. “I’ve experienced something beyond extraordinary, and I want to share it. I hope that I get to have many more encounters with people around the world to testify to love.” “The word ‘Catholic’ is derived from ‘Kata Holis,’ which means that all are welcome,” said Ahrns. “My Catholic faith has allowed me to find purpose in life and meaning behind all things, often a greater meaning than what I can initially understand,” she continued. Storytelling is also an inherent teaching method. Naturally, Ahrns said she would one day like to occupy a teaching role. “After a time of learning and gaining experience, it is quite possible that I will return to school within the next few years. But for now, my heart is happy serving the world and learning and growing from the experiences I’m living as a volunteer,” said Ahrns. As a missionary and volunteer, Ahrns is responsible for reaching a minimum fundraising goal. The sponsorship contributes to the cost of initial training, living, and serving. New Endowed Funds 2017-18 The following funds became fully endowed during the 2017-18 fiscal year. Stefan Psychology Scholarship It is with deep respect, gratitude and friendship that Tena Madison Kirk ’75 established the Stefan Psychology Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Findlay to honor Dr. Edwin S. Stefan, psychology professor at Findlay College/University of Findlay from 1969-1995. It is because of Dr. Stefan that Ms. Kirk remained at Findlay College and completed her degree. This scholarship is awarded to psychology majors in their sophomore, junior or senior year of study and who have at least a 2.7 G.P.A. Christin Kay "Chrissie" Kausrud Memorial English Equestrian Scholarship Friends and family of Chrissie Kausrud established the Christin Kay “Chrissie” Kausrud Memorial English Equestrian Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Findlay. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Chrissie graduated from the University of Findlay in the spring of 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Equestrian Studies and Finance with a minor in Business Administration. Chrissie was working as an assistant horse trainer when she passed away in 2013. This scholarship is awarded to equestrian students with preference given to an English hunter/ jumper emphasis students. Preference shall also be given to a student seeking a second major within the College of Business. The recipient must be in their junior or senior year of study and have a 3.2 GPA or better. Duane and Kathy Jebbett Leadership Scholarship Duane and Kathy Jebbett hereby establish the Duane and Kathy Jebbett Leadership Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Findlay. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time business student who has demonstrated a willingness and ability to participate in extracurricular and enrichment activities in addition to maintaining a 2.75 GPA. Broadway Concert Series Endowment Carol Reno established the Broadway Concert Series Endowment Fund to provide operational support to the Thomas and Kathleen Donnell Broadway Concert Series. Funds may be spent on artist fees, venue costs, travel costs and promotion of the performances. Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Computer Science Scholarship Endowment The Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Computer Science Scholarship Endowment Fund was made possible by a grant from the

Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee. This scholarship was establish to encourage female participation and representation in the field of computer science through the University of Findlay’s Computer Science Program. Myrtle Deming Mazza Museum Endowment Patricia A. Bookwalter established the Myrtle Deming Mazza Museum Endowment Fund in 2015 to honor Miss Deming’s many contributions and lifelong commitment to Findlay College/ University of Findlay. The annual distributions provide support for a variety of needs for the paper engineering gallery at the Mazza Museum. Bob and Marcia Sloan Latta Scholarship Established by U.S. Rep. Bob Latta and Dr. Marcia Sloan Latta, the Bob and Marcia Sloan Latta Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Findlay is available to students residing in the Ohio 5th Congressional District who will participate in a service abroad program. Richard and Patricia Dudley Award for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Science Research Endowment In conjunction with the Give Voice to Your Values campaign, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Dudley established the Richard and Patricia Dudley Award for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Science Research at the University of Findlay. Dr. Richard Dudley and Patricia Dudley have a strong commitment to the education of student-pharmacists and are passionate about preparing the next generation of clinician-scientists. To assist in this preparation, they established this award which will support Doctor of Pharmacy students in any year of the program. Recipients shall have a 3.5 GPA or better and display excellence in pharmaceutical science research. Rich and Phyllis Smith Endowment for the Humanities Endowment Fund In conjunction with University of Findlay’s Give Voice to Your Values campaign, Dr. Richard A. Smith and his wife, Phyllis C. Smith, established the Rich and Phyllis Smith Endowment Fund for the Humanities. This fund will provide support to the College of Liberal Arts and in particular the humanities disciplines of philosophy, English and religious studies, with priority given to philosophy. Dr. Smith was a professor of philosophy from 1979 until 2013, serving as director of the Philosophy Program for 33
years. In his classes he stressed the relevance of philosophy and the humanities for everyday life. He believed that the best college education involves an adequate grounding in the liberal arts. He considered it important for students to grapple with questions about ethics, the nature of reality and the meaning of life. A strong proponent of interdisciplinary studies, he challenged his students to approach problems with an open mind and to think critically and creatively. Mrs. Smith was a teacher in the Findlay City School system for over 20 years. With a master’s degree in consumer and health sciences, she taught students practical skills and knowledge for job preparation, parenting, nutrition, hygiene and time management. Her father was also a teacher, and all her life she advocated the importance of a well-rounded education for young people as they transition into adulthood. Together Rich and Phyllis supported the University of Findlay financially and through regular attendance at various University functions,
including sports events, musical and theatrical performances, and other campus activities. Phyllis participated in Senior Forum for many years and served for a time on the Senior Forum advisory committee. They both are proud to be a part of the University of Findlay’s heritage and to contribute to its bright future. Tony and Joanne Fuller Basketball Endowment In conjunction with the Give Voice to Your Values Campaign, Dr. Tony and Joanne Fuller hereby establish the Tony and Joanne Fuller Basketball Endowment Fund. This fund will be used to support the varsity basketball programs at the University of Findlay. Dr. and Mrs. Fuller own Blanchard Valley Veterinary Clinic and are strong supporters of UF athletics.

Donor Impact Receiving and Giving: My Scholarship Story
Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Computer Science Scholarship for Women Established
Reflecting on my college career results in a mixture of memories and emotions. But mostly, it makes me smile. My parents hadn’t received a college education and strongly encouraged us kids – there were six of us – to seek one. But that’s easier said than done, particularly on a small family farm. In addition to funds saved through 4-H livestock project sales and our summer produce market, I had the good fortune to receive some privately funded scholarships that helped to make college a reality for me. Decades later, I still remember the joy and awe of opening those envelopes and learning that someone I had never met was helping to invest in my future. At college, I was amazed at the variety of classes offered, and I truly loved learning most of the general education curriculum. Many of the classes explored topics previously unknown to me, and introduced me to a wealth of information about philosophy, debate, world history and cultures, and so many other subjects. While the deadlines for research papers weren’t always cherished, the subjects explored and in-depth knowledge acquired have shaped my life in multiple ways. Even geology – my least favorite undergraduate class – has come in handy during trips out west, having a very basic knowledge of the beautiful mountains and unusual rock formations. A trip to England was planned around exploring favorite authors from an English literature class. I got involved in the campus scene right away, and I loved the activities and the leadership development skills that come from extracurricular activities. Working with other students to get a daily newspaper out on time, and rehearsing with others to take a very difficult piece of music and ultimately perform on stage singing beautiful 4-part harmony together prepares one well for working with others in any workplace. When I reflect on my college experience, it really is no surprise that I ultimately chose a career in the field of advancement, where I have the opportunity to encourage people who love education and helping others to provide future students with an opportunity to open their minds, learn from and with others, and explore their dreams. It allows me to keep learning, too.
The demand for digital technology professionals is skyrocketing. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections, there will be a 13 percent growth increase projection in this field, leading to 557,000 more well-paying jobs through 2026. Yet women in the United States are increasingly forsaking computer science careers. ComputerScience.org. predicts “the vast majority of computer science jobs will be pursued and filled by men.” Moreover, this trend has only increased since the 1990s, the website reported, noting, “There is a clear disconnect between the computer science industry and the message girls receive about their ability to succeed in tech organizations.” These statistics are also reflected within the University of Findlay’s classrooms. During the 2017-2018 school year, only 13 percent of students enrolled in UF’s Computer Science Program at the undergraduate level were women, while 35 percent accounted for enrollment in the Master of Science in Applied Security and Analytics Program. In response to the gender gap, the University applied for and received $150,000 to provide three $2,500 endowed scholarships annually to women pursuing computer science degrees. Funding is provided by the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund through Fifth Third Bank. The fund was established in 1908 in Cincinnati, Ohio by Jacob G. Schmidlapp in honor of his daughter who died in a car accident. Schmidlapp founded Union Savings and Trust, which later merged into what is now Fifth Third Bancorp, Philanthropy Ohio. He instructed the fund’s trustees to make grants that would aid women to establish themselves in life. Today, the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund is the largest fund in the country dedicated exclusively to the needs of women and girls. The first three University of Findlay Schmidlapp Computer Science Scholarship recipients are Jacqueline Nobora, a senior from Eastlake, Ohio; Morgen Long, a junior from Findlay, Ohio; and Lillian Siefker, a freshman from Ottawa, Ohio. Nobora, Long and Siefker will also benefit beyond the much-needed funding that will help them pay tuition. They will also interact with Choose Ohio First (COF) Scholars, who are state scholarship recipients pursuing science, technology, engineering, math and medicine degrees. These collaborations “will keep them engaged with professionals through mentoring,

professional meetings and guest speaker opportunities,” said Mary Jo Geise, Ph.D., computer science professor and cochair of the Computer Science Program. “As their major project, they will work with the COF Scholars to develop an Hour of Code program for the Marathon IT Explorer group in April, and present on their preparation experience at UF’s annual Symposium for Scholarship and Creativity.” Scholarship winners will also become involved in the Association for Computing Machinery – Women, a group established between industry professionals and faculty at UF, Bowling Green State University and University of Toledo; and will attend the Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing 2019 conference, a biannual event that gives young women the opportunity to explore internet technology careers, network with others, and meet potential mentors thanks to women leaders from business, industry and academia. Geise said the University of Findlay is excited to offer women such substantial computer science scholarships that will enable them to land valuable, lucrative jobs in this dynamic, fast-paced professional field. Findlay’s computer science courses offer lessons in objectoriented programming languages, client-server applications development and data communication.

100% Oilers Campaign Nets Nearly $200,000
Without exceptionally generous outside donors, University of Findlay students would have a much more difficult time being able to afford degrees that allow them to pursue lives and careers of service and fulfillment, and the University itself would have a harder time providing the top-notch education that distinguishes this institution. Contributing to that generosity are faculty and staff contributions that also make a big difference in students’ academic lives. Each year, the 100% Oilers employee giving campaign asks University of Findlay faculty and staff to pitch in with financial assistance, of any amount they choose, for whatever UF-related area they feel merits their money. Faculty and staff, like anyone else, can therefore donate to a scholarship fund, student organization, the Mazza Museum Fund, the Business Affiliates Scholarship program, and so much more. The campaign is meant to encourage employees to pause and consider the impact that their time, expertise and financial resources have on students and on the campus’ day-

2 017 - 1 8 to-day operations. It’s also an opportunity for the campus community to cohesively reaffirm and uphold the university’s educational mission. The fiscal year 2018 100% Oilers campaign ended up being a particularly successful one. According to Kelly M. Warner, director of annual giving for UF’s Advancement Office, faculty and staff gave back a whopping $196,000. Out of the University’s 15 departments, eight had 100 percent campaign participation. Overall, the campaign “secured 86.7 percent participation from employees, which is an all-time record,” said Warner. Two years ago, the effort had an 80.5 percent participation rate.
Graduate Giving Program Showcases Student Philanthropy
Starting with first-year students taking part in orientation service projects, the value of lifelong giving is emphasized right from the start at the University of Findlay. That focus now extends to the award-winning and increasingly popular Graduating Class Philanthropy Honor Cord Program. Beginning with the Class of 2016, it was created to enhance the annual graduating class gift effort. The program includes financial, educational and service components that engage students in selfless service and set the stage for future philanthropic endeavors. To earn a green cord for donning at commencement, each student must make a donation in the amount of their class year ($20.18 for this year) or greater. The money is used to create a Findlay Forward Scholarship; this year, a basketball 3-point shooting contest among members of the University’s six colleges determined an incoming freshman in the College of Pharmacy was to be the scholarship recipient. Other program requirements are determined by each graduating class. For instance, attendance at educational events that focus on philanthropic community impact, and volunteering for various organizations on and off campus have been required. When the program was launched, the Independent College Advancement Association conferred upon UF its
Program of Excellence Award, which celebrates “people or teams that have developed innovative programs, tools and systems,” and recognizes best practices in the higher education advancement field. On Nov. 14, Taylor Brubaker ’18 received the Outstanding Young Philanthropy Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Northwest Ohio Chapter. She earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy while leading the Graduating Class Philanthropy Honor Cord Program committee. The program’s growing success is evidenced by this year’s statistics. According to Kelly Anderson, director of annual giving, 202 financial gifts were received as of spring 2018 commencement, up from 147 in 2017 and 106 in 2016. Overall senior contributions for undergraduates and graduate students totaled just over $4,200. Those who proudly wore philanthropy cords at the May commencement ceremony totaled 186. Other University of Findlay giving efforts geared toward student participation, such as Oilers Serving Abroad, Dance Marathon and Habitat for Humanity campus chapter provide continuous ways for students to help others throughout their academic career.

Shafer Library As a Matter of Fact: Shafer Library’s 50th Anniversary Celebration is Cause for Contemplation Shafer Library’s story has been shared within the line of volunteers who transported books from their previous home in Old Main, within its stacks featuring tomes about subjects ranging from women’s suffrage to organic chemistry, and between workers who make it possible for others to shape narratives and convey knowledge. And yet, as digital communication increases, many of us now tend to take the library for granted. After all, there is not as frequent of a physiological connection forged between person and paper as there used to be when, say, the library’s card catalog in multiple narrow drawers and books arranged by the Dewey Decimal System were the only ways to find sources. Contrasted with today, scholarly information can be accessed with a phone from any location in the world via Shafer’s website. Books and articles are electronically read,

or books not in Shafer’s stacks are borrowed from other institutions in the state and delivered to campus in three days or less. Then what, you may wonder, does the present and future look like for Shafer Library? According to University Librarian Andrew Whitis, the library may be more important to us now than it has ever been.
Here’s why: First, as digital theory scholars will attest, accessibility is a key component to meaning making. For the UF community involved in studies, research and general knowledge acquisition, Shafer provides the information-finding means, both online and in person. Need to find out about the
prevalence of mental disorders among those within the juvenile justice system? Want to better understand the affect that Alex Jones’ Sandy Hook conspiracy theories have on the families of the deceased? Shafer Library will help you find what you need in those regards. Second, (speaking of conspiracy theories), Whitis added that another essential duty of librarians is to help people separate fact from fiction, to effectively evaluate sources, and to critically consider the information they’re receiving. Shafer Library staffers can help you determine how to “validate if information is correct or incorrect,” and how to understand the difference between fact and truth. Digital dissemination has served to improve open access to information, which has also provided a much larger portal for opinions that pose as facts. Within UF’s “Principles of Speech” introductory course, the library orientation curriculum is changing to focus more on source evaluating, Whitis said. And, of course, Shafer Library still has operational costs, which people also tend to forget about. “Access to information
has changed a lot, but it’s never free,” Whitis pointed out. From a tangible standpoint, Whitis maintains Shafer Library will always occupy physical space, regardless of digital discourse proliferation. It will house infrastructure to support digital access, and workers to manage and provide information; it isn’t called “library science” for nothing. Today, Shafer also has many services that require physical presence, such as its One Button Studios that enable people to record video and audio, and 3-D printers that students and instructors use for hands-on learning with the help of Information Technology Services staff. In a past-meets-present moment, Class of 1968 members, whose commencement ceremony was held at Shafer, learned of these amenities during a 2018 Homecoming and Family Weekend tour. Despite the passage of time, however, the library is, and always will be, “the common area where people across disciplines can work and share knowledge,” Whitis said.

Paul Baransy ’76 recently completed a band composition titled “We Stick Together." The piece, for narrator and band, recounts the story of the five Sullivan brothers who all perished when their ship, the Juneau, was struck by a torpedo during World War II. The composition debuted on June 7, 2018 with a performance by the Waterloo, Iowa Municipal Band.

Dan Huss ’83, a former UF instructor, competed with Ms. Dreamy at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) held in North Carolina in September 2018, one of the premiere world equestrian competitions. He won a silver medal in individual competition and contributed to Team USA’s gold medal.

Class Notes
The following passages were shared with the University of Findlay for publication A. Gail Dunn ’52 died on May 10, 2018 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Findlay College with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and History, and from Winebrenner Theological Seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1955. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1983, and was named a distinguished alumnus in 1995. Dr. Dunn served the Sugar Ridge, Ohio, Anthony Wayne, Indiana, and Mendon, Ohio churches before being transferred to Harrisburg First Church of God in 1967. He served Harrisburg First until being named the Conference Superintendent in 1984. Dr. Dunn retired from active ministry in 1994. Rev. Dr. Dunn served as a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Winebrenner Theological Seminary from 1971-1995 and held numerous leadership roles in the Churches of God including President of the Denomination, President of
the Ohio Conference, Chairman of the Commission on Publications, and Chairman of the Board of the Carlisle Church of God Home. Rev. Dr. Dunn is survived by his sons, Rev. Dr. Stephen L. (Dianne) Dunn and Mark L. (Beth) Dunn, all of Chambersburg, and, daughters, Gaye Lynn (Scott) Hicks and Karen L. Anthony, all of Harrisburg, and 10 grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn (Reames) Dunn ’65.

He spent the majority of his career teaching and coaching wresting at the collegiate level, and enjoyed officiating sporting events, organizing OHSAA tournaments, and selling Reslite mats. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Steiner) Baum; daughters, Linda (Dan) Lukac, Lillian (Todd) Zimmerman, Lenore (David) Morton, Lisa (Tom) Leedy, and Laura (Clark) Taylor; a son, Loren (Caroline) Baum; and 18 grandchildren.
Lester C. Baum ’53 died on Sept. 22, 2018 at his home in Urbana, Ohio. He graduated from Findlay College with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and earned a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran who won the title of All-Navy and Marine Wrestling Champion in 1948 and was
Frederick J. Crates ’54 died on May 11, 2018 in Findlay, Ohio. He graduated from Findlay College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and from Northern Michigan University with a master’s degree in biological sciences. He was married to Dr. Kathleen (Child ’69) Crates ’69, University of Findlay Trustee Emeritus, assistant professor of education and former alumni advisory board member, who survives him. He served an intensive externship at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and joined two biological field expeditions to Mexico with Richard "Doc" Phillips. Fred became a biology teacher at Arcadia, then taught at Glenwood Middle School; ultimately, he professionally settled at Findlay High School where he taught biology. He later worked as the director of research and development at Hancor, Inc., the family business, and became an independent wastewater and groundwater consultant. He retired in 1995. Fred is survived by children James Crates (Stephanie) and Krista Crates ’92 Miller (Mark), and five grandchildren.
Ivan E. Frick ’49, former Findlay College president, died on Aug. 25, 2018. Dr. Frick graduated from Findlay, College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. He held theological degrees from Lancaster Theological Seminary (1952) and from the Graduate School of Theology at Oberlin College (1955). In 1959 he earned his Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Religion from Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary. Ordained as a minister in 1951, he pastored churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, then taught theology, religion and philosophy at Findlay College. After being appointed assistant to the president in 1963, he served as Findlay’s president from 1964-1971. His tenure saw the restoration of the college’s accreditation, an improvement in its financial health, and an expansion of its physical plant through the construction of four buildings. Among numerous awards and degrees from Findlay, he received a Doctor of Humane Letters in 1976. In November 1971, Dr. Frick assumed the presidency of Elmhurst College. He and his wife Ruth ‘50, the college’s first lady, faithfully served in their roles until retirement on July 1, 1994. He is survived by two sons, David Frick, Albany, California, and Daniel Frick, husband of Tamara Goeglein, Lancaster; and a daughter, Susan, wife of Ronald Searl, Westmont, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth.

Harriet A. (Varano) Sanders ’57 died on Aug. 23, 2018. She graduated from Findlay College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Physical Science. She is survived by her husband, Russel Sanders ’56 of Rocky River, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her son, Dwight Sanders. Graduate of Findlay College. Mrs. Sanders taught in the Findlay and Lakewood public secondary schools, and was a Cleveland Sight Center volunteer.
Michael John Zegarelli ’77 died April 27, 2018. He attended Findlay College where he played Division II football with his lifelong friend and fellow roommate, Al Niswander of Ohio, and graduated with a degree in sociology. He went on to graduate from the College of Saint Rose with a master’s degree in special education. Mike became a special education teacher in the Utica City School District where he worked for over 25 years until his retirement in 2012. He also held a position in the Utica School District for over 20 years as a coach for many sports including wrestling, baseball, softball, and most important to him, football. He joined the Utica College Football staff in the summer of 2002 where he coached for 13 years until he retired from coaching in the summer of 2015. He is survived by his wife, Antoinette of Utica; mother, Thelma; and his son, Michael J. Zegarelli II. William Kuhlman ’81 died on August 10, 2018. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Findlay with a degree in speech. Bill was a real estate agent. He was a longtime member of the National Association of Realtors and a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS). He served on the Ethics, Forms, and Arbitration Hearing Committees of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board, and on the Quality of Life Presidential Advisory Group and Technology Committee of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors (MAR), and was a trained mediator for both organizations. In 2005, he was one of 12 realtors selected from the 22,000 members of MAR to participate in its first-ever Leadership Development Academy. He served as president of the board of directors for the Massachusetts Association of Buyer Agents in 2007, 2008, and 2010, was voted Massachusetts CRS of the Year in 2010, and then became president of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Council of Residential Specialists (now known as the Residential Real Estate Council (RRC)) for 2012. In 2018, he was awarded the Profile in Courage Award by the New England Region RRC. He is survived by his wife, Jodine (Vick ‘81) Kuhlman, and daughter, Elizabeth
Kuhlman. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard Kuhlman and John Kuhlman, and by his sisters, Mary Harshfield, Maggie Kuhlman Meyer, and Kathy Kuhlman Klingler. Terence M. Garrison ’95 died May 5, 2018 in Urbana, Ohio. He was a member of the first class to earn a Master of Science in Environmental Management from the University of Findlay, and earned a degree in agriculture from The Ohio State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Vandenberg AFB, California for four years. He completed a one-year internship in environmental management at a federal training center in Battle Creek, Michigan and was hired at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where he spent his 30-year career with the Air Force Research Laboratories. The high point of his career was leading a team that won the Ohio Governor’s Award for Pollution Prevention by being the first to create a bar code system to inventory and manage hazardous materials used in research. His office coffee mug said, “If it blows or glows call us.” Mr. Garrison is survived by his wife, Patricia “Trish” (Wright) Garrison; three children, Emily Garrison of Phoenix, Arizona, Nathan (Tina) Garrison of Marysville, Ohio, and Seth Garrison of Phoenix, Arizona; and two grandchildren Clarence Lee DeTray, ’99 died in Oak Harbor, Ohio on Aug. 18, 2018. He would later receive his Bachelor of Science from the University of Findlay in 1999. Clancy was employed by First Energy and worked at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant in Oak Harbor where he had 40 years of service. He spent his first 20 years in security and the last 20 years in quality assurance. Along with his employment at Davis-Besse, he became a Certified Peace Officer in 1975 and was hired by the Village of Oak Harbor in 1976 as a part-time police officer until his retirement in 2016. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kay DeTray of Oak Harbor; children, Chris (Heather) DeTray of Oak Harbor, Scott (Melissa) DeTray of Brecksville, Ohio, and Valerie (Derek) Buckley of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Celia, Lily, Ella,
Hayley, and Clifford DeTray; and three step-grandchildren, Derek, Dylan, and Makena Gottron. Mackenzie A. Guilford ’18 died on July 1, 2018 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Findlay in spring 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in health sciences and pre-occupational therapy, and had begun her graduate studies. She had been a member of several honor societies on campus, such as the Graduating Class Philanthropy Honor Cord Program, and was a member of the Newman Club of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. She is survived by her parents, Eric and Jodi (Wood) Guilford of Defiance, Ohio; and brothers, Scott and Rickie Guilford of Defiance. Jane Wobser, a former University of Findlay diving coach, died on Sept. 23, 2018. While leading the dive program from 2001-2003, and from 2006-2014, her team made its first NCAA Division II national championship qualifier, and developed a number of athletes who won accolades. She was an accomplished swimmer and coach herself, earning spots in both her high school and college’s halls of fame, state titles in high school, and was a fourtime All American at the University of Tennessee. She also qualified for the Olympic Trials in 1988. She is survived by her husband, Jeff Wobser, and mother, Helen Phoebe Anthony.

Archives Dear Alumni and Friends,
As I look back on my college experience at the University of Findlay, I have many fond memories. Athletics occupied a large part of my college years, but that wasn’t the only aspect that made the University of Findlay special. The transition from Hollywood, Florida to Findlay, Ohio was a real shock. The region is sandwiched between the spring break capital of Ft. Lauderdale to the north and trendy Miami to the south, which meant there was plenty of action, adventure, as well as trouble all around, especially during the 1980s. The fast living, money and women depicted by the hit show “Miami Vice” was accurate about South Florida. Thankfully, I had a great family who kept me in line, particularly my aunts, mother and grandmother. I generally have a balanced, but reserved demeanor. Therefore, at times when I struggled with homesickness or other issues while at UF, I never shared them too often. Yet people still cared. What made Findlay special was not so much our success in athletics but the people with whom I forged lasting personal connections. Yes, everyone knows I had a great coach, coaching staff and team, all of whom I still keep in touch with. But the individuals who really made a difference were former UF Trustee Jerry Howard and his wife, Dona; Don Collins, my academic coach; and Coach Curtis Davidson. It is true that institutions need to have interactive programming and activities that develop students and get them involved, but what is most often overlooked is the establishing of personal connections. Spending time with the Howards in their home after games was invaluable as I could not go home on the weekends like most of my teammates and their families could. Watching Jerry, an exemplary husband and father, and his wonderful wife Dona, whom I viewed as a mother figure, gave me the vision for what I wanted my family to be like later in life. Coach Davidson checked in constantly to ask about me and my family. Don Collins got on me constantly about my grades and the importance of my education. For much of what I do today, personally and professionally, the foundation was laid at Findlay, which ensures that students always feel like they matter. That is exactly what each person that I mentioned did for me, and what made my time at Findlay special. Go Oilers!
