From the President

My message to you—our supportive friends, trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni—is thank you. You will see in this issue of the FindlayMag examples of dedication, talent, generosity, grace, and grit that will see us through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. I hope you enjoy the stories of professors, staff, and students conducting research, teaching, learning, and serving our community—while adapting to circumstances beyond our control. My UF colleagues are inspiring. In fact, the University of Findlay’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a beautiful resolution of appreciation for faculty and staff during its October meeting. One passage describes attributes trustees have seen demonstrated through these difficult months: “encouragement, positive outlook, innovative and inspirational ideas, dedication, pride, kindness, and respect that have prevailed and united the campus under the shared goal of a better tomorrow.” In the pages that follow, you will also see an impressive list of donors who have given generously to support this mission to equip students for meaningful lives and productive careers—for a better tomorrow. Donors at all levels of giving bridge the gap between what students can pay and the actual costs of a great education. Donors make possible the programs, facilities, and hands-on learning experiences featured here as well as many others throughout campus. Such selfless support inspires us to do our best work. Onward,

Katherine Fell, Ph.D. President

Alumni Achievements Eve Gray ‘06: Alumna Discovered Passion for the Environmental, Health and Safety Field at UF by Andrea Blankemeyer As a freshman at UF, Eve (Burnett) Gray ’06 said that she didn’t really know what she wanted to do with her young life. “I knew that I loved science enough,” she said, “and there was science all over the place in the environmental program, so I gave it a try. And now, I’ve been in it ever since.” Through her journey as a student in what was then known as the Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health Management program at the University, Gray, with the helpful guidance of her professors, was able to work four different internships at Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC). During her first internship as an industrial hygienist, she recalled discovering a deeper meaning to her work, one that included a duty beyond simple science. “I was exposed to a lot of the people that I would be helping and I saw that the safety and industrial hygiene side of things was much more directly associated to helping people; that’s when I knew what I wanted to do. I found where I could fit in and be value added to help other people,” she said. As much as the classrooms and coursework are important to a UF education, these “people skills” that Gray discovered early into her academic career are, in the least, of equal importance to the pursuit of a meaningful life and productive career. That was reflected at the University as well, both with her potential career path and with fellow classmates. “As an environmental student at Findlay, we didn’t just get the coursework in the classrooms and the labs, but we had the opportunity to participate in actual workplace training that is given to full-time professionals at UF’s All Hazards Training Center,” Gray explained. “And I felt that within the student body of my program there was a sense of togetherness. It felt kind of like we were a second family.” After her time at UF as an ESOH major with an emphasis in Industrial Hygiene, Gray became a Safety Supervisor in the Logistics and Storage Terminals Organization at MPC, hired full-time in 2007. In her position at MPC, Gray leads a team of five full-time field safety professionals who are located both north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River. MPC’s footprint in terminals, she said, is pretty spread out. “We have terminals that range from New York all the way down to Florida, across to the west coast out in California, and even all the way up to Alaska,” she said. With Gray, who resides in Findlay with her husband, also an employee of MPC, and two young sons, now being an experienced leader in the field, she knows even more about what it takes to be a successful professional. “That balance between education and work experience is so incredibly important,” she said. “I love seeing a strong educational background, but it’s so important for students to balance that with as much work experience as they can get in the field.” And, as Gray’s story points out, the University of Findlay is a perfect place to start.

n an oft-repeated compliment directed toward University of Findlay, students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni alike say that being at UF is like being with family. While there are many reasons for this frequent sentiment, ranging from the helpful attitude of those on campus to the “small University with the big feeling” adage, among countless others, in some cases, that family feeling is a product of being around what is literally family. In the case of UF’s Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS) Program, Seth Ebersviller, Ph.D. and Kim Lichtveld, Ph.D., both assistant professors of EHSS, and UF’s own husband and wife dynamic duo, the word family means both a particular approach to life and a philosophy of kindness toward others. While being brought up in their respective households as kids, Ebersviller and Lichtveld say they had similar family dynamics leading to the significant personality traits they share today. “A very open household, welcome to anybody,” Ebersviller said. “All of my and my brothers’ friends called my parents Mom and Dad. They’d even come over when I wasn’t there to talk to my mom about problems.” “It was the same for me,” Lichtveld explained. “My parents were always willing to have friends of mine and my siblings over as much as it was needed. I saw it growing up so much. They had a soft heart for helping.” With a newborn baby added in late August to the other two children the couple have had in less than four years, along with Ebersviller’s son from a previous relationship, one would think that their plates – and hearts – would be completely full. But, we’re not talking about “everyday people” here. We’re talking about the type of folks who, as a part of the UF family, are different. They’re educators. They’re givers. They’re people helping people. And that’s why these two extraordinary UF professors have, in their own words, “unofficially adopted” several college-aged kids going back to their

days in North Carolina and continuing here at UF. Regardless of what is needed – advice, help with classes, a place to stay – Ebersviller and Lichtveld regularly extend their hands and hearts to include young people in need. So, when the pair ended up in the same program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for their graduate work, Ebersviller, by way of Tennessee Tech, and Lichtveld coming via Agnes Scott College in Georgia, they unknowingly had hearts in common before they even met. But, as it turned out, it wasn’t their outlook toward a helpful attitude that started the ball rolling. When they found themselves in close proximity for their first research lab at UNC, they “were sort of the ‘new kids’ in the lab,” Ebersviller said, “so they put us together. And when Kim told me she’d gone to Agnes Scott, I sang a particular song to her that only alumni from there would know.” “I was like, ‘wait a minute…you know Agnes Scott?’ It’s not like it’s a well-known college,” Lichtveld remembered. As it turned out, Seth’s mentor at Tennessee Tech went to the school and taught him the song. It was a perfect way to break the ice, and the two became friends almost immediately, eventually, Lichtveld said, “trying to start dating, and hopefully not messing it up.” Not only did they not mess it up, Ebersviller and Lichtveld soon realized that they needed each other, in love

and in life, and the pair became virtually inseparable, leading lives that often mirrored one another. They both got postdoctoral positions with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in North Carolina, and when it came time for a career change, the couple similarly stayed connected, albeit with a bit of luck. “I was working for the EPA during the day, and tutoring/teaching at night,” Lichtveld said, “and it wasn’t long before I realized that I liked my night job a lot more than my day one.” She wanted to teach, and it just so happened that a position was opening up at University of Findlay. Never having lived north of the Mason/Dixon line, and, in fact, having been born in South America, Lichtveld was a bit hesitant at first, but was hardly convinced that she’d get the position anyway. “I figured I’d practice what it was like to interview and all that,” she said, “and UF looked similar to Agnes Scott, so I thought maybe it could be the place for us.” During the interviewing process, she found out that there were actually two positions opening up, and that seemed like an omen of sorts to the couple, who were, by that time, married. “The joke is that, because they hired Kim,” Ebersviller said, “they had to take me.” And what was lucky for them was even more so for UF, as now, nearly six years after being hired on in the EHSS program, the pair are still inseparable; but, instead of researching as students, comparing notes for their desk jobs at

FindlayMag | 15

the EPA, and planning for potential careers, they’re up for tenure, comparing preps and tests for the classes they teach, and planning for their future as a family. With newborn Grace, Lichtveld continues to teach courses online, while Ebersviller regularly comes to campus to teach his live classes. They bounce ideas off each other, ask each other to look through their assignments to check for clarity, and she has him check her exams to make sure they’re not too long or too hard. And, as they’re both up for tenure and promotion, they’ve taken to researching together once again. And they’re mutually thrilled to be able to live their lives and traverse their academic paths in the EHSS program at University of Findlay. Their passion for both environmental progress and for the students they educate is well-supported and nurtured by the University, they said, and their excitement for the program continuing to make strides toward future success is easy to understand. New developments like an indoor research enclosure, built on campus nearly two years ago, and the impending construction of the Outdoor Enclosure lab at UF’s All Hazards Training Center – one of only six in the world – have created what the pair call an opportunity for “unifying science,” by bringing students from different disciplines together, and by calling on businesses to improve their environmental impact. “EHSS students will be a part of the research, obviously, but so will biology, chemistry, and others,” Lichtveld said. “And, we have the potential to create really good relationships with local industries also. We’ll inevitably be able to help anybody who’s interested in what they’re outputting from their industry and how they might reduce that.” After all of the research; after all of the many conferences presented together; after all of the air quality tested and exams presided over, the two are still side-by-side, their families and their love for them and each other tightly in tow. And one doesn’t have to use science, environmental or otherwise, to figure out why. In fact, Lichtveld will tell you. “A lot of people need their own space,” she said, “but for us it’s just the opposite. We truly enjoy working and researching together.”

Big plans. Big hearts.

With two people as committed to each other and to University of Findlay as they are, it’s a big blessing to have Seth Ebersviller and Kim Lichtveld in our EHSS family and as a part of an evergrowing program.

M W A U R A

Although still early in his college career, Fletcher Cook, a sophomore in the Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) program, is excited about the range of possibilities his major offers. Fletcher followed in his father’s footsteps, both in attending the University of Findlay and with his chosen field of study. While his expected graduation date is over 20 years after his father’s, their experiences at UF share common threads of opportunity, support, and feelings of home. POSITIVE IMPACT “What I think is so great about the major is the endless amount of opportunity,” Fletcher said. “With the major being so broad, there are a variety of different routes you can choose for a career path.” While his current preference leans to the environmental side of the major, Fletcher looks forward to exploring these different routes by participating in internships and experiential learning in his classes. Whatever path he decides to take, Fletcher looks forward to making a positive impact on the world, whether it be keeping people safe or protecting the environment. “I was very excited to see Fletch join such a meaningful profession that can help protect the environment, other humans, and to help sustain the future for many generations to come," Fletcher’s father, Al Cook, said. FOLLOWING FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS Fletcher credits both his father and his campus visit for the reason he chose to major in EHSS at UF. “When I made my first campus visit, I really felt at home and the professors and students on campus are the ones to give credit for that,” he said. His father shared similar feelings about his own

experiences. “I consider the faculty, staff, campus, and family environment to be second to none,” he said. “It's such a safe setting filled with staff that care about each and every student. This was an experience I lived back in the 90s and it was apparent that the same atmosphere existed when we visited campus as Fletch entertained going to UF.” COLLEGE LIFE Fletcher’s typical day at UF is college personified. He showers and eats breakfast prior to attending classes, normally meets up with friends and grabs some lunch at “Hendo” (Henderson Dining Hall), then goes back to his dorm to relax. In between, he often either takes a nap or gets some studying and homework done. Then it’s back to “Hendo” for dinner with friends. “Nothing crazy,” he said. MAKE CONNECTIONS AND USE THEM Fletcher’s advice for new or incoming students is simple: make connections and use them. Whether it be asking a professor with help on an assignment, taking advice from upperclassmen, or simply connecting with your fellow dorm mates, Fletcher said networking is key to a positive college experience.

RYAN JOHNSON By Hannah Mwaura

After hearing about the University of Findlay by chance while playing high school baseball, Ryan Johnson’s athletic and career path began to unfold. Now a senior Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) major on UF’s baseball team, he is thankful for the UF family he has in the team and is excited about his future in the EHSS field.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Johnson attended Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw, North Carolina. While at a baseball tournament in Georgia, he met a coach from Ohio who offered to help him find a college team. After sending the coach some film of himself playing, Johnson heard back from a coach at UF. The next week Johnson flew to Findlay, attended a workout with the team, and toured campus. “A big part of why I fell in love with UF is because of the southern comfort atmosphere,” Johnson said. “When I toured campus, there were a great amount of people who greeted me and made me feel as if I was at home. Coming from North Carolina and not being close to any family, there was a sense of peace that came about when touring Findlay.” The feeling of home has only grown stronger throughout his time at UF, especially during his time with the team. Johnson says he would have felt lost without the team, calling them family. “Baseball can be a grind of a sport with its peaks and valleys,” he said. “If it wasn’t for the team, it would be extremely hard to show up every day and compete. It really makes it worthwhile to give all your effort to the sport when you are playing, not just for yourself, but for the brothers that put on the same uniform as you.”

A TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW COVID-19 put the team’s supportive family mentality to the test, when the season was cancelled last spring. The hardest part for Johnson was not getting to play with his senior “brothers” one last time. “It was a very tough pill to swallow,” he said. “The junior and senior classes from last year’s team might be the tightest knit classes Findlay has ever had. We still talk all the time to this day; it was almost like a shot in the heart hearing that I wouldn’t be able to put on the uniform with them.” Going into the fall season, Johnson is pleasantly surprised with how things are going. For the first couple of weeks back, the team had to practice with only 10 or less athletes at one time. Then they slowly transitioned to a full team practice, where Johnson said the team is looking good for the spring. “Though I know there are uncertainties with the amount of games, who we will be able to play, and what the COVID-19 guidelines will look like at that point, I can say that our focus as a team right now is to just keep getting better and not worry about what we can’t control,” he said. “I believe we will have a spring season and am ready to get on the field with my teammates for one last go around.”

Annual Report

Whether it is through a planned gift, the creation of an endowed scholarship, a matching gift or a corporate one, we are always extremely grateful to our friends across the globe who make a gift to the University of Findlay. As this issue of FindlayMag shines a light on the people, places, and things that make up the Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability program at UF, it shines a light, as well, on the opportunities to give to that program, so that our faculty, students, and alumni can continue making a difference in the health of our world as a whole. Those who have giving hearts for UF, regardless of the area or method in which they open them, are an essential part of making the University of Findlay a success year after year; without the people who lift up UF with their generosity, it would be much more difficult for our students to get through challenging years such as this one, and with that in mind, we are particularly thankful. The full Annual Report, which has the audited financial statements and recognizes and lists all of our generous donors for the year, will be available online beginning January 15 at findlay.edu/offices/advancement/annual-report. Once again, thank you to one and all who gave to and supported our UF students over this past fiscal year with financial gifts. In Oiler Spirit,

Alumni Spotlight

You see it all over the University of Findlay campus, and it almost appears to happen organically. People helping people. People coming together to actively work to assist those who need it, whether it’s the innate quality of the students, faculty, and staff at UF, or the attitude of support and encouragement that just seems to naturally happen. My name is Nicole Burgy. I graduated from UF in 1999 with a dual major degree in Business Administration and Accounting, and I am the new President of the Alumni Association Board of Governors. I am a longtime member of the local community, having been raised in Arcadia, Ohio, right outside of Findlay, and now working at Marathon Petroleum Company as the Tax Director - Indirect Tax Compliance and Planning. UF’s mission is to equip students for meaningful lives and productive careers. My life and career and that of so many other UF alumni that I know and have had the opportunity to meet throughout the years since I graduated reflect this mission. Supporting UF ensures that our future generations have the same opportunities we had while at UF. Findlay is my home and UF is a key part of Findlay, and we need to make it certain that others have the same opportunity that I did to earn a degree from UF. I am thrilled to be in a position to make a difference at UF, and I encourage you to lend a helping hand and to make a difference whenever you see that it’s needed. It’s the Oiler Nation way. Nicole (Hauenstein) Burgy ’99, President Alumni Association Board of Governors

In our current time, it was clear that we would need to put on a Homecoming Weekend in a way that had never been done. So, for our Celebration of Oiler Nation, we created a host of virtual ways to participate all Homecoming Weekend long. This year's Virtual Homecoming Weekend was all about celebrating what it means to be an Oiler. And through lots of social media fun, spirited decorating of campus, a super fun Oiler Nation drive-thru, virtual college updates highlighting our successes throughout the year, a virtual 5K, celebrating our alumni with the Alumni Association Annual Awards, and a whole lot more, whether together or apart, we felt the bond that links us all as Oilers to be forever strong!
