A mighty flame followeth a tiny spark. ............................- Dante Alighieri I quote a poem from Dante Alighieri to interpret my design concept. About design, from magnificent architectures, elegant products or furniture, to delicate posters and books, all the design objects derive from an initial concept: the moment of inspiration. I describe it as “a tiny spark”. The sparks glitter in designers’ mind, as beautiful as immense starry night. However, only the moment of inspiration cannot constitute the entity, so the following concept development and research are the more essential factors to realize design. This is a process which needs designers to perform their perseverance, elementary skill and comprehensive knowledge. Furthermore, over hundreds of concepts, only one may become realized. The situation seems like a picture that a myriad of stars surround the moon. For me, romantic inspiration and rational research are both fascinating. Therefore, I develop the visual presentation of my portfolio from the concept of starry night. In the portfolio, I explain my design process because each work has their tiny sparks. On the road I pursue advanced studies, these works will follow me to become refined. Eventually, I hope those who reading the portfolio may join my journey. Keep going.

01 The Emperor’s Tea Cup The Emperor’s Teacup is a tea set which concept derives from an ancient king in China, Emperor Qianlong. We transform the historical story into novel product design. The product is chosen to be sold at National Palace Museum from 2012.
4
Long time ago, the Emperor Qianlong of Chin Destiny was fond of tea, and there was a humorous dialogue between the emperor and the courtier in their daily lives. One day, the loyal courtier said “Country won’t exist without the king.” , then the emperor smiled at him, and replied “But, the king won’t exist without tea!” Nowadays, we designed a series of teacups by the name of “The Emperor’s Teacup” which its design concept came from the emperor hat. Furthermore, we hope that everyone drinking tea may feel good, as the ancient emperor, while using the product. Emperor Qianlong liked drinking tea, collecting treasures, so these paintings and calligraphies he collected were usually with royal stamp. Therefore, we designed a stamp pattern on The Emperor’s Teacup and then told a story to all the users: “You’ll feel that you have the treasure contentedly when you hold these teacups. The left third photo is the product preparing to be sold in National Palace Museum.

02 Wishes The vase Wishes derives the concept that I hope my family and friends well and world peace. In the past, Chinese people preferred to apply “Ruyi patterns to daily objects, including of architectures, furniture and cloths.

PROCESS To fit the initial design concept, I prefer to create the surface of Wishes which is smooth as jade. I tried different materials on the process of making the model. At first, I chose to apply glasses but it faced some problem. Therefore, I changed to use a material which is like porcelain to show the classical beauty of the vase Wishes.
Nowadays I design a vase by the form of Ruyi. Because the Chinese letter of vase sounds as the same as “peace, it represents our wishes for peace that people put flowers in the vase Wishes. The design process comes from the research for traditional Chinese pattern, such as Ruyi and Lucky Cloud. I want to interpret ancient form in a modern light. The reason I choose vase for my design object is its beauty and usage both in the past and nowadays. I try to create a fusion of old culture and new life style.

03 Ripple Light Ripple Light is the union of the tea table and the light source furniture, suitable for use next to the sofa, bed side, or any corner in the home. The design concept derives ripples on water surface glittering and reflecting sunlight.
8
DEVELOPMENT After the observation, we defined the problem and conducted research about furniture design, then trying to figure out the best design solution. We made sketches to combine different styles and forms in order to advocate the advantages of Ming dynasty furniture and modern environments. We wanted to design a product that can express “changing times”, so at last we decided on “the ripples” subject concept, taking the image of ripples spreading as an analogy of relationship between light and time. Using observation of people reading, drinking tea, or resting, often need light and a space to put things, we combined the two needs, and using classical Ming dynasty furniture to improve it into a modern product.
9
DETAILS The cambered surface on the wood lamp cover is like the mark of water droplets, from top to bottom, showing the flow of fiber optics. Just use the feet to step on the switch to turn on the fiber optics, the bottom of the wood table expresses a retro atmosphere. The round wood table was a reincarnation of the Ming dynasty fragrance table, from a place to put an incense burner to the modern city life. Ripple Light lights up a space, and also arouses you and I to think of the ancient exquisite feeling.
10
PROCESS The manufacture of Ripple Light has two parts, one is the portion of light, another is the portion of table. The underneath wood table follow the classically artistic skill, tenon, which was used to produce furniture in the past. One of the advantages of tenon is the uselessness of nails. Ripple Light was exhibited in YODEX (Young Designers' Exhibition) and Eslite Bookstore, the work attracted some business men’s interests at that time. It also won the prize in Taiwan Qualia Product Design Competition in 2011.
04 Pumpkin Design The conce pt of Pumpk in D e sig n i s bringing pleasure and expectation to all the users in every moment in daily lives. Also, Pumpkin Design is a teamwork project. In the scenario, we found a studio and design a series of home appliances for our proprietor.
11
What’s Pumpkin Design? The idea comes from “trick or treat” and we reinterpret it by the point of view of designers. In other words, all the members in this design studio must to have a curious and lots of ideas about mischief. Our service items include product design, CIS design, and graphic design and so on. The advantages of Pumpkin Design are not only comprehensive market research and project planning, but also talented designers. In Pumpkin Design, I’m a design planner be responsible for planning and proposal. RESEARCH We found a brand by the name of YOPO and design a set of coffee machine and toaster after the following market research, as STP analysis: segment, market targeting, and positioning. We focus a young group of middle class and design products as medium priced but classic flavor.
12
BRAND STORY The concept of YOPO derives from early birds. Let’s start your own urban life in a pleasurable morning with early bird sounds. YOPO Design provides a series of stylish home appliances to accompany all the users in daily lives. We observe user experiences and decide not to change original use process. Therefore, YOPO design comes from providing users better experiences while not functional innovation. We hope that these products we designed will be suitable different kinds of home environments and keep in style.
DEVELOPMENT The contrasting colors of YOPO Design products are the characteristics which we are inspired by birds in Taiwan. Meanwhile, we want to encourage users in the beginning of a day by bright colors.

06 Brand Collection Brand Collection is a project which we design products that may be produced and sold in the future for a famous brand, Hermes. Besides, our design concept is the fusion of ancient oriental style and romantic Paris style.
16
We understand this famous and fabulous brand, Hermes through analyzing its product line and history. Then, we find that there are full of delicate and elegant elements in Hermes style. The investigation shows the color of Hermes products over the past four years.
We made some images for the charming brand, Hermes, including of posters, slogans, image board and mind mapping. The previous researches are helpful for us because we clearly knew what color and symbols we should choose by analyzing the brand.
Therefore, we design a series of tableware, and the theme is “Wandering China. The concept comes from promotion marketing of Hermes in China in recent years, and then we adopt Chinese Zodiac animals of 2011 to design patterns.
17
07 Paper Age The name of Paper Age comes from cramming life style in Asian countries. Some happy memories in childhood are replaced by testes and papers nowadays. The purpose of the exhibition is providing a chance to rethink.
18
SOCIAL ISSUE We planned the exhibition to advocate a different education. We visited the cram school, collecting used test papers and academic books, and then we reproduced these materials by the method of shredding and gluing. After the process, we present a new toy, a cockhorse familiar to all of us, with a different perspective and explanation. On the surface of the cockhorse, you may see questions and formula clearly, which imply that our childhood has been stressed with endless tests and exams. Therefore, we named the exhibition project “Pager Age”.
PROCESS We made draw ing s to ensure for m, s c ale and proportion. As to the exhibition design, we collected many stereotypical questions of true-false testes, some of which were quoted from the real database of elementary school in Taiwan, and we printed them on the wall.
EXHIBITION
We hope that people will wonder if these questions have correct answers indeed when visiting the exhibition. In addition, we provide several areas arranged with frames in order to let visitors touch the materials made of used papers.
It is the exhibition in Taipei World Design Expo in 2011. The main idea of the project is “Search”. We are a team composed of eight young designers. While developing the design concept, we tried to search for the same images of childhood. Astonishingly, we found that these images about childhood we thought of before had no longer existed such as playing in the park, wandering in countryside and so on. What replace those imaginary memories are "real memories", like undone test papers, all kinds of academic books, and cram schools day after day...... That’s the initial concept of Paper Age.
