LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

To whom it may concern, I have known the architect Irene Trompouki since 2014 when she was a student in the Atelier of Architectural Design which I teach at our School of Architecture “Collective Housing in Thessaloniki”, with the very good grade of 8 out of 10. She has also worked with Professor Kyriaki Tsoukala and me under our supervision for the preparation of her design Diploma Project between 2014 and 2015 “Residential Housing in sequence”, with the excellent grade of 10 out of 10. In both cases she has evidenced competitive capacities and skills as an architecture designer. intelligence, firm willingness, creative personality and a very good capacity to work in a group. Moreover, the architect Irene Trompouki, despite her age, is a very serious and mature person. Considering all these reasons, I strongly especially for the employment she applies for.

Residential Housing in Sequence year: 2014-2015

place: Veroia, Greece supervisors: Conenna Claudio, Tsoukala Kyriaki The study area of this project is the hill “Villa Vikela”, which extends on the outskirts of the city of Veria in Greece, offering spectacular view to visitors. The area is 11208.56 m2 and at the highest point of the hill there is a preservable building, which is surrounded by coniferous trees. Object of this thesis is the design of eight residential buildings and the exploitation of the land in such a way as to protect the natural environment and also to highlight the existing preservable building, which today is not easily accessible to public.

The residential buildings are composed of two different types of housing. Placing them “in-sequence” is done every two quartets by following the slope of the natural ground. In between the two horizontal rows of houses a shared space with vertical bridges, staging areas, sunshades and green zones is formed. The idea is to create a space that encourages people’s interaction and integrates the existing with the new. In addition, an underground road network is designed, in order to functionally support tenants’ parking needs and to minimize the presence of vehicles on the area. The materials that dominate are wood, exposed concrete (different colors) and glass and their selection is based on the harmonization of the buildings with the environment.

The landscape design of the plot is approached in such a way as to: a)ensure the functionality of the buildings (catering, parking lots, and pedestrian traffic) b)minimize the interference of the construction with the natural environment, and c)highlight the preservable building Thus, the architectural intervention is restricted and is limited to the design of a path, which leads to a spacious “balcony” that hovers above the ground, offering visitors the opportunity to walk into the nature and enjoy the view. Moreover, apart from the existing conifers that surround the building -which remain as they are-, an additional tree planting program is proposed, along with the planning of green spaces accessible to visitors for rest and recreation.

Collective House year: 2014 place: Thessaloniki, Greece supervisors: Conenna Claudio, Tsoukala Kyriaki The purpose of this project is the design of a seven-storey apartment building in the city of Thessaloniki, in Greece. The aim is to resolve problems related to the integration of the building to the urban environment, the organization of functions and the structure materiality. The idea is based on the design of three different apartment types, which will correspond to different needs, and their embodiment to the building will be accomplished in a way that accessibility, view and orientation will be exploited. The number of the apartments is a total of 35 and they are divided according to their size: • 60m2 one-bedroom apartment • 90m2 two-bedroom apartment • 120m2 three-bedroom apartment The ground floor plan contains the main entrance of the building, which includes the hall, the elevator and the staircase. Next to the entrance there is a cafeteria/bar with all the necessary services. The design of the structure is based on the idea of a building that “floats” above the ground. This is accomplished with the use of support elements instead of columns, which are placed in a great distance from one another. As for the exterior design of the building, each balcony of every apartment has the ability to move horizontally, offering a variety of alternative configurations of the facade.

Small Hotel Complex

year: 2013

place: Thessaloniki, Greece supervisors: Antoniou Kwnstantinos, Katsanos Dimitris The task of this project is the design of a small hotel by the sea with thermal bath activities and marina. The final result is mainly devoted to the detail plans, sections, facades and materialization that complete the initial concept. The basic goal of this project is the exploitation if the sea- view in such a way that all of the hotel rooms will be facing the sea. So, the main building consists of two levels and is organized in a “v shape. The ground floor plan is divided in three sections each one offering different facilities. The first section is the main entrance containing all the public services like a reception, a mixed use hall, a lounge, a bar and a breakfast room. The second section contains the thermal bath activities and more specifically the pool, the spa and the changing rooms. Finally, the third section includes the rooms which continue to the upper floor of the building. The structure is based on simple lines and the materials include exposed concrete surfaces, glass openings, wooden floors and aluminum shutters on the exterior facade of the rooms.

“Nomadic Residence Year: 2011 Supervisor: Alexopoulou Aleandra The task of this project is the design of a housing complex for temporary use only. What needed to be taken onto consideration was the fact that the proposed houses should be able to adjust based on the different needs of the users. In addition, all buildings should be designed on a vertical wall of 18 meters height and each one should be less than 25m2. The idea is that the residence buildings are addressed to pilots or flight attendants visiting the city for a few days before the next flight and so they are located near the airport site. The plot is configured in such a way that it offers peace but yet is close to main road to facilitate movement. The houses are a total of five and they are placed on the vertical wall of the plot which has two ladders for access to the level of each house. In every house there is the possibility of moving a part, on the horizontal axis, creating an overhang that can reach up to 2 meters long.

Urban Residence Year: 2011 Supervisor: Alexopoulou Aleksandra The task of this project is the design of a residence building for a parent with a kid. According to the script of the project the parent is a painter and the house should be designed in such a way as to provide a room for the father to work. The main restriction that should be taken into consideration is that the side walls of the house should not have any openings. The house is a two-floor building and has a total height of 8.78 meters. The ground floor plan contains the main entrance, the kitchen, the living-room and a small wc. In addition, a small garden is formed on the back of the house next to the living-room area. The internal staircase leads to the private areas of the house (two bedrooms and a shared bathroom). Father’s room serves as a small studio because it is completely autonomous and has its own bathroom. Finally, the access to the workshop is done through his own room, via an internal staircase leading to the attic. The workshop has view of the street and offers sufficient natural light that is necessary for the work of the painter.
